AP/Daily Mail UK 23 JAN 2019.

The Cardiff City striker is still missing and feared dead after his plane disappeared over the English Channel on Monday night

Emiliano Sala told his former Nantes teammate he 'feared for his safety' before he took off on his doomed flight across the English Channel.

Rescue workers searching for the Premier League footballer have said they are not expecting to find any survivors after his plane vanished on Monday night and Guernsey Police said that the chances of survival were 'slim'.

The Argentine striker completed a £15million move to Cardiff City on Saturday before returning to France to bid farewell to his old squad at Ligue 1 side Nantes, posting a poignant photo alongside the words, 'The last goodbye'.

Sala was making a round trip in the same plane and when he arrived in France, he reportedly told ex-teammate Nicolas Pallois - who drove him back to Nantes-Atlantiqe airport - that the trip out 'had been bumpy and he feared his safety for the journey back.'

The 28-year-old was due to return to Wales in time for training this morning but the Piper Malibu aircraft he was in lost contact near the Casquets lighthouse off Alderney at 8.30pm on Monday night.

Cardiff City chief executive Ken Choo said everyone at the club was 'very distressed' and 'praying for positive news.'

Sala posted this photograph to social media last year, and regularly kept fans updated with his training. Friends said he was 'fulfilling the dream of a lifetime' by moving to the UK, and 'could not wait to start playing in Cardiff'

John Fitzgerald, chief officer of the Channel Islands Air Search, said he was not optimistic about finding Sala and the pilot. Pictured, the search off Alderney

'The Last Goodbye': Emiliano Sala posted this photograph on Instagram yesterday, bidding farewell to his old teammates at Nantes Football Club, after he signed a record £15million contract with Cardiff City FC

Speaking from Argentina, Sala's father Horacio said he was 'desperate' for news, and broke down in tears as he described him as a 'small town humble boy', adding: 'I just can't believe it.'

In an emotional statement the footballer's mother, Mercedes Taffarel, said her son was 'enjoying the best moment of his career so far.'

John Fitzgerald, chief officer of the Channel Islands Air Search, said he was not optimistic about finding Sala and the pilot.

He said: 'I don't think the coastguard are either. We just don't know how it disappeared. It just completely vanished. There was no radio conversation'.

French police, the French civil aviation authority and Nantes Football Club confirmed that Sala was one of the two people on board the Piper Malibu which lost contact near the Casquets lighthouse off Alderney at 8.30pm last night.

The Piper Malibu was flying at some 2,300ft and requested descent as it passed Guernsey but was lost off radar as Jersey air traffic control attempted to make contact.

It went missing as severe weather warnings about snow and ice were issued across France.

The official Nantes FC Twitter account posted a statement and a message to their followers about the missing striker, reading: 'The management and the whole Club are hopeful and it is the whole family of FC Nantes who prays that @EmilianoSala1 and the other passengers of the plane are finally found safe and sound,' read a tweet on the official account.

'FC Nantes joins the call of supporters for the rally tonight from 6.30 pm at the Royal Place in Nantes to drop a yellow tulip at the foot of the fountain,' they added in a second tweet.

The club later changed its profile picture to a photo of Sala.

Sala's former teammate, French Guingamp midfielder Lucas Deaux, tweeted: 'I hope from the bottom of my heart that this is not true.'

So far more than 1,155 square miles have been covered in the search for the missing aircraft.

Mr Fitzgerald said there could be a 'five per cent' chance of finding Sala and the pilot. He said: 'I think with the sea temperatures and the sea conditions the chances of finding anybody alive are reducing all the time.

'The sea temperatures are very, very cold and just sap the core temperature of anybody in the water very, very quickly.'

Sala was 'fulfilling the dream of a lifetime' by moving to the UK, and 'could not wait to start playing in Cardiff', according to a friend in France.

When he left the grounds yesterday to head to Cardiff, Nantes FC tweeted: 'Merci Emi, forever yellow and green.'

After joining Cardiff on Saturday, Sala's sister Romina proudly shared the news story about his signing, saying: 'Big brother '.

His father Horacio told Argentine channel C5N he was made aware of the news by a friend.

He said: 'A friend called me and told me what had happened. I'm in Rosario now, I'm working because I'm a truck driver. I didn't know anything. I just can't believe it. I'm desperate. I don't know what could have happened.'

He said striker Emiliano, from the small town of Progreso in Argentina's northeastern Santa Fe province, had been excited to be moving to Cardiff and playing in the Premier League.

He added: 'To get the chance to play at a big European club was an amazing step for him and for his town back home. He is a humble small town boy. Everybody is watching the TV and waiting. Hopefully some good news arrives.'

His mother, Mercedes Taffarel, told the same TV station: 'We don't have any more news. The only thing I know is that the plane took off and they are searching for it, we don't know anything yet, they haven't found anything.

We are just here waiting, minute after minute. I spoke to him a few hours before he took off. I don't know what else to say, I'm so worried.

'They called me from France to tell me that his plane had gone missing and they were looking for him.

'We are in constant communication and desperate for good news. He was very happy and content with the transfer. He was enjoying the best moment of his career so far.

'He would come over often to visit us, and we would go to visit him there. He was alone, he didn't have any family members with him in France.'

In a statement this evening Guernsey Police said: 'During the course of the 15-hour search, which used multiple air and sea assets from the Channel Islands, UK and France, a number of floating objects have been seen in the water.

'We have been unable to confirm whether any of these are from the missing aircraft. We have found no signs of those on board. If they did land on the water, the chances of survival are at this stage, unfortunately, slim. Two planes and a lifeboat are still searching. A decision about an overnight search will be taken shortly.

The Premier League club had signed Sala on a three-and-a-half-year contact on Saturday.

Nantes have announced their French Cup match due to be staged tonight against L'Entente Sannois Saint-Gratien has been postponed in agreement with the French Football Federation.

Amine Harit, a Moroccan footballer who played with Sala at Nantes before joining German side FC Schalke in 2017, suggested he was praying for the missing player in a tweet.

He wrote simply 'Emi..' followed by a string of praying hands and crying emojis.

Nantes forward Randal Kolo-Muani retweeted Harit's message on his personal account.

Sala is immensely close to his family in Argentina, and spoke to his mother who still lives there 'most days', but still believed his destiny was in Britain.

He's in touch with his family all the time, mainly on WhatsApp,' said the Brittany-based source.

'His mum often visits, along with his brother and sister. He's very loyal to them all, as he is to everybody.

'The English Premiership was his dream, though. Emiliano is also very religious.

'He prays a lot. His Catholic faith is very important to him.'

Speaking on TV channel CNEWS, Nantes President Waldemar Kita said today: 'I think that he came back because he wanted to say goodbye to his friends.

'He was a polite, kind and adorable boy, loved by everyone. He was very respectful, very courteous.

'I am thinking about his family and all his friends. For the rest, we don't know yet.

'I am still hoping that it is not finished, that he is somewhere, that he will be there. I have just found about this.

'I was not even aware that he was at Nantes. He is no longer owned by Nantes, he does what he wants.

'And I say that because I am still hopeful that we will find him.'

Sala was grew up in Progeso, an Argentine town with only 3000 inhabitants in Santa Fe province, in the centre east of the country.

'As a kid, I watched a lot of the English championship on TV,' he said in a recent interview in France.

Referring to two retired French players, Sala said: 'I liked Arsenal, with Thierry Henry and Robert Pires.'

Sala has a younger brother and sister in Argentina. The brother works as an electrician, and the sister works in a care home.

He left home when he was 15 to become a professional footballer, but is immensely loyal to his roots.

Sala could have been set to make his debut at the Emirates against Arsenal on
29 January.

Speaking on Saturday after signing for the Bluebirds, Sala said: 'I can't wait to start training, meet my new team-mates and get down to work.'

Also, speaking at the time of the unveiling, CEO & Executive Director, Ken Choo, added: 'It's obviously been a long process to secure the services of Emiliano, but I'm very pleased that we're now in a position whereby we can confirm his signature and officially announce him as a Cardiff City player.

'We see Emiliano as a significant acquisition and welcome him wholeheartedly to the Capital city of Wales. I'm sure all Cardiff City fans will join me in that and we can look forward to seeing our record signing in a Bluebirds shirt.'

Before switching to Cardiff, Sala was the third highest scorer in Ligue 1 this season with 12 goals, behind only Kylian Mbappe and Nicolas Pepe.

Update re: Search Called Off for Missing Footballer & Crashed Plane

Emiliano Sala's Sister Makes Desperate Plea for Missing Plane Search to Continue

Guernsey Police have called off the search for the £15m Cardiff striker in the English Channel - but Sala's sister Romina has appealed for the authorities not to give up

Romina Sala makes the plea (Image: Sky Sports)

Emiliano Sala's sister has made an emotional plea for the search to continue for her “fighter” brother following the Cardiff City striker’s disappearance.

After completing his club record £15million move to the Premier League on Friday night, Sala was on board a Piper Malibu aircraft which crashed in the Channel Islands on Monday evening.

The 28-year-old and the plane’s pilot – David Ibbotson– were the only men on board the aircraft and despite extensive searches, neither men has been found.

Guernsey Police called off the search on Thursday night with the force rating the chances of survival as “extremely remote”.

Sala’s sister Romina has travelled to Cardiff and in front of the media at the St David’s Hotel in the Welsh capital, appealed for the authorities not to give up.

She said: “We understand the facts and we really appreciate the efforts. We want to say thanks to the two clubs (Cardiff and Nantes) and everyone who is looking for Emiliano, but my message is please, please, please don’t stop with the search. For me, they are still alive.

“It is very difficult to express my feelings at the moment because it is really hard.

“We have had a lot of support from the two clubs and I thank all the fans for their efforts, but deep down in the bottom of my heart I know that Emiliano – who is a fighter – is still alive. I know Emiliano and the pilot are somewhere in the middle of the channel.

“We are not going to give up.”

Sala with his sister and mother

Sala had signed for Cardiff last Friday before the deal was officially confirmed on Saturday. Over the weekend he travelled back to former club Nantes to say goodbye to his team-mates.

His plane back to Cardiff from Nantes on Monday never arrived in the Welsh capital.

The footballer voiced fears about the safety of the missing plane in a WhatsApp audio message he sent to friends. In the message, he said:

“I am here in the plane that seems like it is about to fall to pieces. I'm scared."

Romina Sala added: “The last time I spoke with Emiliano was on Monday before he went to say farewell to the Nantes players. He was really excited to come over to Cardiff and we were in touch all day long sending pictures and messages.

“The comfort and support of the people from around the world with regards to the missing of Emiliano and the pilot has been incredible. Please try to be under the skin of the next of kin to try to understand the suffering of this moment.

"I understand the effort, but the plea is the same – please don’t stop the search. At the bottom of my heart I know Emiliano is still alive and somewhere in the Channel Islands.

“Questions are for another moment. Right now there are two families desperate to know the whereabouts of two people. Questions about how Emiliano went into the plane and what’s happened are for another moment, not right now.

“Without knowing what the next steps are, the next step is to go to the search place to try to push it forwards.

"The only thing I want is to find my brother and see him again.”

Plane Carrying Emiliano Sala 'Could Have Been Brought Down by Deadly Ice on Wings'

The missing aircraft was carrying the Cardiff striker and pilot David Ibbotson when it went missing on Monday night

The plane carrying Cardiff striker Emiliano Sala could have been brought down by deadly ice on the wings, experts have reportedly warned.

Sala, 28, was returning to South Wales having signed for the Bluebirds in a club-record £15million deal.

He had said his goodbyes to Nantes teammates and staff before boarding the light aircraft.

And aviation sources told The Sun that the build-up of ice on the wings could have been the plane's downfall.

One reportedly said: “There are reports that the footballer was texting saying the aircraft is shaking and breaking up.

“These are classic signs of icing on the wings. The pilot is most likely wrestling with a stall at 2,300ft. It is likely, though, that the aircraft hit the water in one piece otherwise debris would have quickly been found.”

Pilot David Ibbotson, 35, had admitted he was "a bit rusty" at the controls of the Papier PA-46 plane prior to the flight and the plane went missing over the English Channel.

Both men are missing presumed dead with rescue chiefs admitting there is "no hope" of finding the duo alive.

Cardiff have confirmed they were not responsible for organising the transport for Sala.
In a haunting audio message sent on WhatsApp before the flight, Sala told pals the plane looked like it was "going to fall apart".

Pilot Dave Ibbotson is also feared dead

Guernsey Police confirmed at sunset on Wednesday they had called off the search for the night, and would take a decision on Thursday morning as to whether it would resume.

"After an intensive search using multiple aircraft and one lifeboat over the last nine hours, we have found no trace of the missing plane," they said. "With the light now fading, the search will shortly be suspended for the night.

"A decision about whether to recommence will be taken early tomorrow morning. There will be no further updates tonight."

The pilot flying the plane has been confirmed as 60-year-old Brit Dave Ibbotson, from North Lincolnshire.

Update re: Missing Footballer Plane Wreckage Found >One Occupant Visible

Emiliano Sala Wreckage Pictured After Plane Cushions Found on Beach

The footballer and pilot Dave Ibbotson are missing, feared dead, after the plane disappeared

Mirror UK, 30 JAN 2019.

This is the first picture of wreckage believed to be from the plane carrying striker Emiliano Sala.

Investigators said earlier on Wednesday that two seat cushions that had washed up were likely to belong to the aircraft.

And Josette Bernard, who lives in Normandy, has taken pictures of a seat she found on the beach four days ago.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) was advised by its French counterparts on Monday that part of a cushion was found on a beach near Surtainville on the Cotentin Peninsula.

A second cushion was found in the same area later that day.

The AAIB said in a statement: "From a preliminary examination we have concluded that it is likely that the cushions are from the missing aircraft."

Josette Bernard's photo of a seat of a plane she found on the beach

It went on: "Since we opened our safety investigation on Tuesday 23 January, we have been gathering evidence such as flight, aircraft and personnel records, and have been analysing radar data and air traffic tapes.

"We have been working closely with other international authorities and have kept the families of those involved updated on our progress."

The AAIB has established a "priority search area" of around four square nautical miles and commissioned a specialist vessel to carry out a survey of the seabed.

It would not confirm the location but said it is where it believes the aircraft entered the sea.

Due to the weather and sea conditions, this is expected to start at the end of this weekend and could take up to three days.

If wreckage is found, a remotely operated vehicle will be used to examine it.

The AAIB said it is aware that a privately-funded search is also being conducted and is "liaising closely with those involved to maximise the chance of locating any wreckage and ensure a safe search operation".

Marine scientist David Mearns is assisting the family of footballer Sala, who had just signed for Cardiff City, with this separate search.

He said on Monday it would focus on an area of 25 square nautical miles on the seabed north of Alderney.

The Piper PA-46 Malibu carrying Sala and pilot David Ibbotson disappeared over the English Channel on January 21 after leaving Nantes in France for Cardiff.

It requested to descend then lost contact with Jersey air traffic control.

Update re: Missing Footballer Plane Wreckage Found >One Occupant Visible

'It's a Dream, a Bad Dream. I'm Desperate': Father of Footballer Emiliano Sala Tells of His Pain After The Plane That was Carrying His Son was Found at The Bottom of The English Channel

'One Occupant' Visible in Wrecked Plane

  • Two boats found the wreckage of Argentinean footballer's plane on Sunday
  • The striker's emotional father Horacio spoke to television channel in Argentina
  • Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson left Nantes for Cardiff on January 21
  • The plane went missing over the English Channel and could not be located
  • Crowdfunded vessel picked up sonar signal before the AAIB boat confirmed find
  • Wreckage of the Piper Malibu will now be probed for clues as to what happened
Daily Mail UK 4 FEB 2019.

Emiliano Sala's father Horacio, speaking after his son's disappearance. Yesterday he told how he was 'desperate' and in a 'bad dream' after the plane's wreckage was found on the sea bed

The specialist FPV Morven ship, pictured in Guernsey, was being used in a privately funded search for the plane of missing footballer Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson...

The specialist search for the missing plane began off the coast of Guernsey yesterday morning and located the wreckage on the seabed just hours later.

Sala and pilot Ibbotson left Nantes in France for Cardiff on January 21 - after the star signed for the Welsh Premier League team, disappearing over the Channel.

The official search was called off after four days but Sala's friends, family and fans clubbed together to pay for a private search to continue with renowned shipwreck hunter David Mearns.

On Sunday morning, their efforts paid off.

Geo Ocean III left Ostend in Belgium at 9am and began combing the area. Within hours it was search vessel FPV Morven which picked up a sonar signal from the depths.

The wreckage of the Piper Malibu was formally identified by officials from the Air Accident Investigation Board.

The AAIB's vessel deployed a remote-controlled submarine to examine the plane and tonight confirmed it was the craft carrying the striker.

Families of both men have been informed of the discovery.

Sala's father said last night he had not had any contact with the rest of his family - who are still in a hotel in Nantes - and found out about the plane's discovery on TV.

'I communicated with them every day, but since I do not have Whatsapp it's hard to call them or call me. They told me that the days passed and there was no news of Emiliano or the plane,' said Horacio.

He said that the family are in the hotel along with 'eight or nine' friends who are believed to have received the news from Argentine embassies in France and England, at 9am.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) Geo Ocean III moved in to assist the Morven when it discovered wreckage. Geo sent an ROV to visually identify the wreck on the seabed

Both the AAIB's Geo Ocean III vessel and a private boat, which includes a side-scan sonar, were used to try and find the aircraft.

Teams from the AAIB have now moved into location at the site to recover the aircraft.
The vessel that made the discovery was lead by marine scientist David Mearns, who confirmed the identity and location of the plane.

He confirmed that it was in the early stages of this morning's search, around 9am, the discovery was made.

'But tonight they have heard devastating news and in respect of the families I won't comment any further about what has happened.'

The recovery vessel picked up something on the sonar 24 miles off Guernsey and made further passes over the area to pinpoint the location before going through various stages of identification.

David Mearns called the news 'devastating' but told Sky News that 'at least we were able to bring some sort of answer to the families.'

A track of the FPV Morven shows it returning to shore after the wreckage was discovered

Mr Mearns told Sky News: 'This is about the best result we could have hoped for the families'

The discovery came just two days after cushions from a plane were found on a beach near Surtainville in Normandy, France, directly east of Guernsey where the plane disappeared from radar.

Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson disappeared when their plane vanished as it passed near Alderney on 21 January during a flight from Nantes to Cardiff.

Angry re: FINAL Report-Emiliano Sala Plane Crash >Pilot Flew Too Fast & Lost Control

Nantes Threaten Legal Action Over £15million Emiliano Sala Transfer to Cardiff City

The striker completed a January move from Nantes to Cardiff before his private plane disappeared

Mirror UK, 6 FEB 2019.

French club Nantes are threatening legal action against Cardiff over the Emiliano Sala transfer - even before his body has been found.

Mirror Sport understands that Nantes sent an e-mail demanding the £15m fee last Thursday and followed up with a legal letter on Tuesday.

They are threatening further action unless they get the first payment - the fee is spread over three years - within ten days despite the ongoing search following the Argentine striker’s tragic disappearance.

Cardiff have held off until they establish the full facts and to see who was to blame for the tragedy after the plane, the Piper Malibu N264DB, went missing with Sala and pilot David Ibbotson on board two weeks ago.

Investigators have discovered the plane in the English Channel with a body inside but have yet to identify who it is because of the poor weather.

They are also trying to establish who owned the plane, insurance issues and other details surrounding the flight which may mean it results in an insurance pay out.

But Cardiff are understood to be willing to meet their full obligations and, while Nantes have done nothing illegal, the timing of the request with the family still distraught with worry has caused upset at the Premier League club.

French club Bordeaux are also entitled to a cut of the fee, thought to be 50 per cent after Sala was on their books from 2012-2015 before joining Nantes.

Air Accidents Investigation Branch confirmed on Tuesday that their mission to recover the body inside the wreckage is underway.

An AAIB spokesperson said: "We are attempting to recovery the body. If we are successful, we will consider the feasibility of recovering the aircraft wreckage.

“Strong tidal conditions mean we can only use the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) for limited periods each day and this will mean that progress is slow.

"Regardless of the results, we will not be making a further statement until the families have been informed."

Emiliano Sala Confirmed Dead in Plane Crash After Cardiff Striker's Body is Pulled From Plane Crash Wreckage

Investigators have confirmed that the body of Emiliano Sala has been recovered from the wreckage of his plane that went missing last month.

Mirror UK, 8 FEB 2019.

A body was pulled from the aircraft, which was found on the bottom of the ocean north of Guernsey, earlier this week.

The plane, which was carrying Sala and pilot David Ibbotson, disappeared off the radar around 8:30pm on January 21, as the Cardiff City striker was travelling from Nantes to the Welsh capital.

The investigation to find the plane was initially called off after three days, but Sala's family raised the funds to keep the search alive, with thanks to donations from the international football community.

Sala’s sister paid an emotional tribute to her tragic brother in the early hours of Friday morning.

Update re: FINAL Report-Emiliano Sala Plane Crash >Pilot Flew Too Fast & Lost Control

Cardiff Call for Action After Revelation Emiliano Sala Pilot 'Was NOT Qualified to Fly at Night'

Cardiff have claimed Emiliano Sala's life was put in danger after rules of flying were 'disregarded'

Daily Mirror UK, 31 MAR 2019.

Cardiff City have released a statement demanding those responsible for organising the doomed flight which killed Emiliano Sala are held "fully accountable".

In their strongest statement yet, the club have expressed their shock at revelations pilot David Ibbotson was not qualified to fly at night.

The BBC claim Mr Ibbotson was colour blind and would therefore not have been able to attain a licence to fly at night.

Sala was found on the seabed of the English Channel after the flight from France, where the Bluebirds' record signing had returned to Nantes to say goodbye to teammates and staff, back to South Wales came down.

Ibbotson is still not accounted for.

In a statement, Cardiff said: "Cardiff City is shocked to hear the pilot, David Ibbotson, may not have been permitted to fly at night.

"The club remains deeply concerned that the pilot, and those who arranged the flight, seemingly completely disregarded the rules of flying and put Mr Sala’s life in such danger.

"We believe those who are responsible should be held fully accountable for their actions.

We reiterate our support for the Air Charter Association's call for more awareness of and better enforcement against illegal flights."

Sala had been signed by Cardiff for £15million from Nantes in January and was set to spearhead the Welsh side's charge for Premier League survival.

It has been reported Cardiff will tell FIFA they will not pay the transfer fee due to the forward's death making the switch "null and void".

Emiliano Sala Morgue Photos Posted Online as Police Hunt Sick Ghoul Who Took Them

EXCLUSIVE: Horrifying stunt at a Dorset UK mortuary led to pictures of Sala's body being shared — now police want justice for his family

Daily Mirror UK, 28 APR 2019.

The Argentinian's death broke his father's heart

Cops are probing how sick photos of plane crash footballer Emiliano Sala’s body were posted online.

The horrifying stunt was revealed just two days after the Argentinian star’s grieving father Horacio, 58, had a heart attack and died.

A detective said last night: “We’re disgusted somebody did this.
“It is a very difficult time for Mr Sala’s family and they should not have to endure additional pain this shameful act will undoubtedly cause.”

Striker Sala, 28, was being flown by private plane from Nantes in France to join his new Premier League club Cardiff City on January 21 when it disappeared over the Channel in poor visibility.

His body was recovered 16 days later on February 6 after search teams finally found wreckage of the Piper PA-46 Malibu light aircraft north of Guernsey.

The player’s remains were taken to the Holly Tree Lodge mortuary in Bournemouth, Dorset, before a post-mortem examination took place.

Police believe the ghoul may have broken in to the morgue.

An inquest on February 11 was told that the footballer had died from injuries to his head and upper body.

The body of pilot David Ibbotson, 59 – a father of four – is still missing and air accident experts continue to probe how the crash happened.

The crash is also thought to have killed the pilot, who's still missing

Yesterday Dorset Police said: “We are aware that a picture reported to be of Mr Sala’s body has been shared on social media channels and are disgusted somebody did this.

“We are investigating this incident and working with a number of *agencies to establish how the picture was taken and who is responsible.”

A source added: “One theory is that someone broke into the mortuary and took these pictures.

“The image went up on Twitter but was very quickly taken down.”

It also follows the arrest of Burnley FC supporter Gary Kay, 36, who is accused of posting sick tweets about Sala’s death.
The estate agent later “apologised unreservedly” over the jibes.

The club banned him from their Turf Moor ground “pending the conclusion of a police investigation”.

The revelation is another terrible blow to Sala’s mum Mercedes, sister Romina and brother Dario.

On Friday his father Horacio suffered a fatal heart attack at the family home in Progreso, Santa Fe.

Update re: FINAL Report-Emiliano Sala Plane Crash >Pilot Flew Too Fast & Lost Control

Man Arrested on Suspicion of Manslaughter Over Emiliano Sala Death in Plane Crash

Police investigating death of player arrest man aged 64 from Yorkshire

Emiliano Sala was killed in a plane crash over the English Channel after signing for Cardiff in a club record deal

The Guardian UK, 19 JUNE 2019.

Sala was a club-record signing from Nantes in a deal worth around £15m

Detectives investigating the death of the Cardiff City footballer Emiliano Sala have arrested a 64-year-old man from North Yorkshire on suspicion of manslaughter by an unlawful act, Dorset police have said.

The Argentinian forward, who had signed for the Welsh club, died in a plane crash in January.

Sala disappeared with David Ibbotson, the pilot of the Piper Malibu aircraft, after it crashed in waters north of Guernsey on 21 January.

Sala’s body was brought to Portland Port in Dorset on 7 February after a private search, but Ibbotson, 59, of Crowle, Lincolnshire, is still missing.

DI Simon Huxter of Dorset police’s major crime investigation team said: “We have carried out a wide-ranging investigation into the circumstances of the death of Mr Sala and continue to work with partner agencies including the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

“As part of this investigation, we have to consider whether there is any evidence of any suspected criminality and, as a result of our inquiries, we have arrested a 64-year-old man from the North Yorkshire area on suspicion of manslaughter by an unlawful act.

“He is assisting with our inquiries and has been released from custody under investigation.

“This matter therefore is still subject to a live investigation and I would ask the media and members of the public to refrain from speculation, as this could cause additional distress to the families involved, as well as potentially hinder the investigation.

“As is standard practice, we will not be releasing any further information as to the identity of the individual who has been arrested unless that person is charged to appear in court, and again would discourage any speculation in relation to this.”

An interim report from the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) said the plane fell thousands of feet in the space of 20 seconds after making a 180-degree turn, four minutes after the pilot requested a descent, apparently to avoid cloud and maintain vision. Investigators have not concluded what caused the plane to crash.

The investigation is also considering the regulations applicable to the operation of the flight including airworthiness requirements, flight crew licensing and the carriage of passengers.

These regulations allowed the aircraft to be flown by private pilots holding an appropriate licence, but it was not allowed to be used for commercial operations without the owner or operator first obtaining permission from the CAA and the Federal Aviation Administration in the US, where the plane was registered.

The owner of the plane has not been named. The AAIB said ownership had been transferred into an American trust allowing it to be registered in the US. This trust had a contract with a UK company that originally bought the plane. The company was responsible for the operation of the aircraft, ensuring it was maintained in accordance with applicable regulations and met all airworthiness requirements. A third party managed the aircraft.

When it published its interim report in February, the basis on which Sala was being carried had not yet been established. It was known that previously the pilot had carried passengers on the basis of “cost sharing”. Cost sharing allows a private pilot to carry passengers and for those passengers to contribute towards the actual cost of the flight.

It is understood there is still a dispute ongoing between Cardiff City and Nantes over the payment of the fee for his transfer to the Bluebirds.

Wednesday’s arrest is not the first in connection with the tragedy. Earlier this month it emerged that two people from Wiltshire will face charges over a photograph showing Sala in a mortuary.

Sherry Bray, 48, and Christopher Ashford, 62, have been summonsed to court after an image was circulated extensively on social media which showed the Argentinian striker’s remains at the Holly Tree Lodge mortuary in Bournemouth.

Wiltshire police said Bray, of Corsham, has been summonsed for three counts of computer misuse, perverting the course of justice and sending an indecent or offensive message.

Ashford, of Calne, has been summonsed in relation to six counts of computer misuse. The pair, who were arrested in February, will appear at Swindon magistrates court on 10 July.

Sala died of head and trunk injuries, a preliminary inquest hearing has been told.

Update re: FINAL Report-Emiliano Sala Plane Crash >Pilot Flew Too Fast & Lost Control

Emiliano Sala & Pilot Poisoned by Toxic Levels of Carbon Monoxide, Before Fatal Plane Crash

Daily Mirror UK, 15 Aug 2019.

Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson were exposed a "potentially fatal" amount of carbon monoxide before the tragic plane crash on 21 January.

Sala lost his life, while Mr Ibbotson's body has never been found, after their Piper Malibu PA-46 aircraft went down while travelling between Nantes and Cardiff earlier this year.

The Air Accident Investigation Branch have said that Cardiff City forward Sala, who had only just signed for the club, had a carbon monoxide level of 58 per cent in his blood.

That amount can cause seizures, unconsciousness or heart attacks. Anything over 50 per cent is considered potentially fatal.

It is suspected that Mr Ibbotson may have also suffered from similar levels.

The report said: "It is clear from the symptoms that exposure to CO can reduce or inhibit a pilot’s ability to fly an aircraft depending on the level of that exposure."

It was also detailed how "poor sealing of the cabin or leaks into the heating or ventilation system from the exhaust" can allow gas into the cabin of the plane.

It is currently unknown whether the pair passed out and died on the plane due to their exposure to the deadly gas, or whether they perished on impact with the English Channel.

However, the findings could explain how Mr Ibbotson lost control of the plane.

The AAIB added: “When our investigation has concluded, we will publish a final report.”

A Cardiff City statement on the report said: "Cardiff City Football Club is concerned at the AAIB's latest report which once again highlights that the aircraft used for Emiliano Sala was not appropriate.

"We continue to believe that those who were instrumental in arranging its usage are held to account for this tragedy."
.

He had returned to former club Nantes to retrieve his belongings and say farewell to staff and teammates.

Guernsey Police launched an immediate search in a bid to find the duo, but the operation was later called off when nothing was found.

UK Air Accident Investigation Branch later launched an official search alongside a second, private underwater search lead by Mearns.

Sala's body was recovered on February 6 after search teams finally found wreckage but the body of Ibbotson was never found.

An inquest on February 11 was told that the footballer had died from injuries to his head and upper body.

A statement released by solicitors on behalf of Sala's family said: "That dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide have been found in Emiliano’s body raises many questions for the family.

"How he died will be determined at the inquest in due course.

“The family believe that a detailed technical examination of the plane is necessary.

“The family and the public need to know how the carbon monoxide was able to enter the cabin. Future air safety rests on knowing as much as possible on this issue.

“Emiliano’s family call on the AAIB to salvage the wreckage of the plane without further delay.”

Responding to calls for the wreckage to be removed from the sea, an AAIB spokesman said: "The reasons for our decision not to recover the aircraft wreckage have been explained in detail to both families concerned.

"In February our underwater search operation successfully located the wreckage, recovered the passenger's body and captured substantial video evidence from the scene using a remotely-operated vehicle.

"It was not possible at the time to recover the wreckage.

"We have carefully considered the feasibility and merits of returning to attempt to recover the wreckage.

"In this case, we consider that it will not add significantly to the investigation and we will identify the correct safety issues through other means.

"In making our decision, we took into account the high cost of underwater recovery, the evidence we collected in February and the risk that, after a violent impact with the sea, the wreckage would not yield definitive evidence."

Meanwhile, A couple are currently facing jail after accessing CCTV footage of Sala's post-mortem.

Sherry Bray, 48, and Christopher Ashford, 62, appeared at Swindon Crown Court on August 9 and were warned they face jail after admitting the charge.

A photo of Sala's body was reportedly posted online with police launching an investigation.

Bray, of Corsham, was summonsed to court for three counts of computer misuse, perverting the course of justice and sending an indecent or offensive message.

Ashford, of Calne, was summonsed in relation to six counts of computer misuse.

Tributes poured in from across football as Cardiff and Nantes mourned the loss of the striker.

His funeral took place on February 16 in his home town of in Progreso, Argentina.

Sala's father Horacio tragically passed away three months later after suffering a heart attack.

Prior to his death, he criticised Cardiff for leaving their son "like a dog" following the transfer.

"With all the money that had been paid for him, why was it so hard for them to find something safe? Why couldn't they?

"But they left him alone. They left him like a dog. They left him, they abandoned him."

Sala is believed to have not been in favour of his transfer to Cardiff.

A WhatApp message sent by Sala to a friend on January 6 and released by the L’Équipe Enquete documentary in May, have shown that the Argentine - despite admitting it was a good offer financially - was not keen on the move to Cardiff.

"Last night, I sent a message to Meïssa [N'diaye, Sala's agent], he called me a few hours later," begins Sala.

"So we had discussions and he told me the last night Franck Kita [son of Nantes owner Waldemar] sent him a message to talk, so he called him. They spoke. And, they want to sell me.

"So, there is the offer from Cardiff today. On their side, they have negotiated to get a lot of money. So they absolutely want me to go there.

"It is true that it is a good contract but from a football perspective it is not interesting for me. So… there you go, they are trying in every way to get me to go there.

"Me I am not scared to go there, because I have battled throughout my career, so to go there and fight, that does not make me scared.

“On the contrary. But also, I say to myself that Meïssa must find me something better between now and the end of the window. Meïssa has said no to Cardiff because he does not want me to go there.

"He thinks that in terms of football, in terms of where we are today, we are in a position of strength in every which way, in terms of on the pitch, the contract, all of that. But I don’t care about that and I do not want that. I don’t give a f*** about being in a position of strength.

"It is true that I would like to find something interesting in terms of contractually and also from a football perspective, but sometimes you can’t have both. On the other hand, I do not want to speak with Kita, because I do not want to get angry. He is someone who disgusts me when I am face to face with him.

Final Report into Emiliano Sala Plane Crash Rules Pilot "Flew Too Fast and Lost Control"

Footballer Emiliano Sala was killed when the plane carrying him crashed into the English Channel while en route to Cardiff after signing for the Welsh side

Daily Mirror UK, 13 MAR 2020

.

The plane crash that killed footballer Emiliano Sala was caused when the pilot flew too fast and lost control while attempting to avoid bad weather, accident investigators said.

A final report by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) concluded that the single-engine Piper Malibu aircraft suffered an in-flight break up while being flown too fast for its design limits.

It added that pilot David Ibbotson, 59, was probably affected by carbon monoxide poisoning.

Investigators found that a contributory factor in the crash was Mr Ibbotson having no training in night flying and a lack of recent practice in relying only on ****pit instruments to control a plane.

Summarising the findings, Geraint Herbert, investigator in charge, said: "Control of the aircraft was lost during a manually flown turn and the aircraft descended rapidly accelerating.

He said the resulting loads on the aircraft were "excessive", which caused it to then "break-up in flight."

"It was likely that the pilot's ability to control the flight was impaired to some extent by carbon monoxide poisoning," he added.

Argentinian striker Sala, 28, signed for Cardiff City from French club Nantes on January 19, 2019, for £15 million.

Mr Ibbotson flew him from Cardiff to Nantes so he could say goodbye to his former teammates later that day, before conducting the fatal return flight two days later when the plane plunged into the Channel.

Sala's body was recovered but Mr Ibbotson has not been found.

Sala had signed for Cardiff from Nantes (Image: AFP/Getty Images)

Neither Mr Ibbotson nor the plane were licensed for the flight to operate commercially but evidence showed he was to be paid a fee, the AAIB said.

Unlicensed charter flight operations - known as grey charters - generally incur lower operating costs.

Former football agent Willie McKay has said he paid for the fatal flight but did not choose the pilot or the plane.

He has explained he was helping his son Mark, who was acting for Nantes, to complete the transfer.

Alison Campbell, senior inspector for operations, said it was a dark night with "little or no" visible horizon.

"There was poor weather in the area, and from his radio calls, it was clear the pilot needed to manoeuvre to avoid it," she explained.

Following a descent of thousands of feet in a matter of seconds, the pilot attempted an "abrupt nose-up" manoeuvre.

This was conducted at a speed far in excess of the design limits of the plane, causing it to break-up.

Investigators concluded that the aircraft entered the Channel upside down, and the impact was "not survivable".

The AAIB also revealed that the pilot informed a number of individuals about four potential problems with the aircraft that had occurred during the outbound flight from Cardiff.

This included a "bang", although its cause is unknown and it could not be determined if it was a factor in the crash.

Emiliano Sala's sister is reportedly in a critical condition after trying to take her own life.

Romina, who has been the spokesperson for the family since Emiliano's disappearance and death in January 2019, is being treated in hospital, according to the Argentine media.

Sala was travelling back to the UK having completed a transfer to Cardiff City from Nantes two and a half years ago when the plane carrying him disappeared over the English channel.

It sparked a huge search operation from authorities and remnants of the aircraft were eventually found on the seabed.

Sala's body was recovered a few days later but that of pilot David Ibbotson was never found.

Romina has continued to post about her late brother on social media following his tragic death.

Sharing an image on his birthday, October 31, two years ago, she wrote: “There are no words that can describe the pain.

"Happy birthday brother! Where ever you are, give us the strength to go on.

"I wish everything were different… I promise you we will not stop until the end. Kisses to heaven."

Sala had previously played for Bordeaux before joining Nantes, and was signed by then-Cardiff boss Neil Warnock to try and keep the Bluebirds in the Premier League.

His death saw an outpouring of emotion both in South Wales and at his old club, as well as around the footballing world.

Investigations into the crash have suggested the incident was caused by complications with the plane involving carbon monoxide.

Update Re: Emiliano Sala: Pilot Said Doomed Plane Was Dodgy

Emiliano Sala: Pilot Said Doomed Plane Was Dodgy

The pilot of Emiliano Sala's plane told friends the aircraft was "dodgy" before the flight that killed the Argentine footballer, it can be revealed.

BBC News 21 SEP 2022.

David Ibbotson is heard in exclusive audio obtained by the BBC saying "I'll be wearing my life jacket" on the journey from France to Wales.

He told a friend he heard a "bang" on a previous flight. The plane crashed into the English Channel in 2019.

A new podcast also reveals footage of the last time the pair were seen alive.

Sala had just become then Premier League side Cardiff City's £15m record signing from French club Nantes when the plane crashed into the English Channel.

Technical Difficulties

He was flown by Mr Ibbotson - a part-time pilot who didn't have a licence to carry paying passengers - back to western France to say his goodbyes and collect some belongings.

He flew to Nantes on Saturday, 19 January, and planned to return on the Monday - the day of the crash.

Audio of a telephone call to a fellow pilot has been exclusively obtained by the BBC, revealing for the first time the technical difficulties Mr Ibbotson had on the journey to France.

In it, he says he heard "a bang" during the flight and complained that he could feel a "very low mist" inside the 35-year-old Piper Malibu plane.

"I'm mid-Channel and 'bang'," Mr Ibbotson told friend, Kevin Jones, about his flight to Nantes.

"I'm flying along and then 'boom'. I thought, 'what's wrong?' So I put everything forward and checked my parameters, everything was good and it was still flying, but it got your attention."

He added: "That Malibu, occasionally you've got like a mist every so often. You can feel it, very, very low throughout the airframe."

Mr Ibbotson, 59, said he also realised the Piper Malibu's left brake pedal wasn't working after landing at Nantes Atlantique Airport. "This aircraft has got to go back in the hangar," he told his friend.

The conversation was accidentally recorded and has since been obtained by the BBC's Transfer: The

Ahead of the flight back to Cardiff, Mr Ibbotson added: "Normally I'd have my life jacket between my seats but tomorrow I'll be wearing my life jacket."

The only two people on the plane were Emiliano Sala and Mr Ibbotson, from Crowle, in North Lincolnshire, whose body has never been found.

'Man, I'm scared'

The footballer had also expressed his fears about the aircraft in a voice note sent to his closest friends as the plane was taxiing on the runway at Nantes Atlantique Airport.

The player told them, "man, I'm scared" and that the plane he was on "looks like it's falling apart". "I don't know if someone will look for me because they won't find me," Mr Sala told his friends about a potential crash.

Cardiff City FC had offered their new signing a commercial flight, via Paris, but he wanted more time to say goodbye to friends and team-mates in Nantes before returning to Wales for his first training session with his new club.

So Willie McKay, the man who helped broker the transfer, chartered a private flight - directly between Nantes and Cardiff - through another pilot, David Henderson.

Because Henderson couldn't undertake the request, he called in Mr Ibbotson.

The Argentine did not know Mr Ibbotson wasn't qualified to fly him on that fateful night. The gas fitter was only an amateur pilot and did not have a licence to carry paying passengers or to legally fly in the dark.

About an hour after take-off from runway three, in Nantes, Piper Malibu N264DB lost radar contact over the English Channel, and air and sea rescues were launched.

The plane had been flying at 5,000ft but the pilot lost control while descending to avoid clouds and ditched into the English Channel, just north of the Channel Islands, at an estimated 270mph (434kph).

Air accident investigators found the footballer would have been "deeply unconscious" from carbon monoxide poisoning and that the pilot would have probably been affected too.

The player's body was recovered from the wreckage when it was discovered 68m (223ft) below the English Channel, two weeks after the crash. Plane N264DB was left on the seabed.

Henderson, who arranged the flight, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for recklessly endangering the safety of an aircraft in the way he organised the trip and using a plane commercially without permission.
