The battle of the Brian Stann victims kicks off the portion of the event streaming live on Facebook. Cantwell is making his middleweight debut against Massenzio, who returns to 185 after a one-off with Krzysztof Soszyński at light heavyweight.
Though young Cantwell is favored and has a higher upside than Massenzio, he has lost three straight. His weight cut doesn’t appear to pose a major challenge on paper, but it’s still new, and any effects of the cut will be unknown until fight night.

Two UFC journeymen compete here for the fight to remain a UFC journeyman.
The 34-year-old Schafer (3-4 in the UFC) returns to the Octagon after about 18 months away from the promotion. The 37-year-old Simpson (5-2 in the UFC) has won two straight there.
Schafer has shown he is vulnerable in the standup, and Simpson has the chops to keep it vertical and close the deal.

It’s the odds-on favorite for Fight of the Night. And you know what? I can’t argue.

Aldo is a good champion, a great fighter and a darling of the hardcore fan set. But he has never gone into the deep water.
Interesting, because that’s Kenny Florian’s specialty.
Florian is too smart to simply stand in front of Aldo and absorb those nasty leg kicks. And let’s not forget that Aldo had some trouble with Mark Hominick in his first UFC bout.
It’s true that the UFC fast-tracked Florian to the featherweight title shot. And it’s true that Florian has shown a certain, ah, sluggishness before under the very brightest lights. But he’s too smart not to learn from his mistakes. Aldo has never found himself in a grinding match—not recently, anyway. He’s a jiu-jitsu black belt so he certainly has the tools, but it’s a different story when you’re fighting for a full house.
I think you see where I’m going here. That’s right: against the grain, baby. Prime the pump. Turn the hand crank. Let me hear those alarms. Let me hear the dogs a-ululating.
Other people may be afraid to bet against the young wrecking machine. But I am not other people.
I could just take the safe route, pick Aldo by TKO and then sit back and absorb the applause.
Or, I could say that this Saturday night, at UFC 136, under that bright blanket of Texas stars, we will crown a new UFC featherweight champion of the world.
Just don’t forget where you heard it.

1. Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard

Finally, the waiting is over.

More than a year after they fought to a draw at UFC 125, Edgar and Maynard will fight for a third time, and hopefully break the logjam that has gummed up the lightweight division works like a kilo of Wisconsin sharp cheddar.
Here’s the thing with this one. Edgar has heart and endurance for miles. He is thelittle engine that could. He has impeccable footwork, almost peerless speed and the sharp hands to carve you up. He’s not the champion for nothing.
And now for the “but."
We all saw the way Maynard manhandled Edgar in the first round. We also saw how Edgar fought back. Nevertheless, that first stanza left no doubt (at least in my mind) of who the better fighter was when all other things were equal. And, of course, none of this is to mention the fact that Maynard defeated Edgar in their first engagement.
To put it another way, I don’t think the undefeated Maynard will let Edgar off the hook again. Maynard probably has a slight edge in grappling. And he has the size and strength advantage. And if you think that doesn’t matter much, ask Demetrious Johnson what he thinks about it.
That’s right. The alarms, they don’t stop coming. Once UFC 136 is all said and done, Dana White will have bestowed the gold on not one but two new recipients. Mark it down.
