If you ask most mixed martial arts fans, they find the striking aspect of MMA to be perhaps the most aesthetically pleasing part of the sport.

When two touted strikers step into the ring or cage and live up to the billed hype of the match, there's perhaps no greater reward for the fans.

Of course, you'll have your notables such as Maurice Smith, Marco Ruas and Anderson Silva—though those men have rarely faced a fellow striker with the ability to truly test them on the feet.

So, which fights in MMA history have pitted two lauded striking aficionados against one another, while yielding some memorable moments?

Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar

It's always nice to pay homage to these two men.

Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar both met in 2005, hoping to become the inaugural 205-pound The Ultimate Fighter champion. What they did instead was help mold the mixed martial arts world into what it is today.

In a slugfest for three full rounds, both Bonnar and Griffin abandoned all technique in favor of a good old-fashioned barn burner.

In the end, Griffin was declared the winner by decision, though both men earned the respect of the MMA community while simultaneously becoming fixtures within the organization, where they both still compete today.

15. Pedro Rizzo vs. Andrei Arlovski

It was definitely a case of "too much too soon," but 23-year-old Andrei Arlovski proved his meddle.
The Belorussian met with the prolific Pedro Rizzo back in March of 2002, only sporting a 4-2 record at the time.
While his stature in the sport was still unproven, Arlovski showed promise early on in his career, previously TKOing future PRIDE fixture Roman Zentsov in 78 seconds and cinching the M-1 heavyweight title in the process.
Arlovski held his own against the dangerous Brazilian, who was known as one the most devastating strikers in the sport at the time. Eventually Rizzo continued to utilize low kicks to set up his hands, connecting on a devastating right hand that sent Arlovski crashing to the canvas early in the third and final round.

14. Bas Rutten vs. Tsuyoshi Kohsaka

It was Bas Rutten's foray into the Octagon, and he passed with flying colors.

Tsuyoshi Kohsaka's biggest claim to fame is perhaps his TKO (cut) victory over future PRIDE champion Fedor Emelianenko, though he has long been regarded as one of the toughest men to ever enter MMA.

A heavy-handed striker in his own right, Tsuyoshi became wary of standing too long with the dangerous Rutten, who came from a traditional Dutch kickboxing background.

Eventually, Rutten forced Kohsaka to stand with him after nullifying his grappling skills, and though the Japanese star had his moments, Rutten eventually secured the TKO victory after 14-plus minutes of action.

13. Benji Radach vs. Murilo Rua

A Chute Boxe protege with impressive muay thai skills pitted against a heavy-hitting boxer, the bout was destined for an impressive finish.
Murilo "Ninja" Rua, the older brother of PRIDE legend Mauricio Rua, met with the notorious Benji Radach under the now-defunct EliteXC banner.
The two middleweights tagged one another in the early goings, infamously rocking each other both at the same time. Radach awoke from the daze first, eventually dropping the Brazilian and finishing him midway through the second round.

12. Thiago Alves vs. Chris Lytle

While Chris Lytle has a professional background as a boxer, he has shown little of his technical prowess inside the cage.
Against Thiago Alves at UFC 78, his style was no different. The Brazilian utilized his chopping low kicks, coupled with his powerful hooks, against Lytle's spitfire style.
The two had each other on shaky legs on several occasions and had already secured their spot as the evening's "Fight of the Night," however a significant laceration opened up above Lytle's eye, which eventually robbed fans of a third and final round between these two welterweight standouts.

11. B.J. Penn vs. Sean Sherk

It was billed as the "greatest lightweight fight" in mixed martial arts history.
Former champion Sean Sherk took on the manic Hawaiian B.J. Penn, who reigned as the organization's 155-pound titleholder.
The two met at UFC 84, headlining the prolific pay-per-view event which also featured a light heavyweight showdown pitting Lyoto Machida against "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Tito Ortiz.
Sherk abandoned his impressive wrestling repertoire and decided to trade blows with Penn, who has long been considered to be arguably the best boxer in mixed martial arts.
"The Muscle Shark" utilized a tight boxing regimen, using a shell defense while blitz with short hooks on the inside.
Penn chipped Sherk away with the jab for three rounds, eventually rocking the Minnesota native in the waning moments of the third-round, leaving Sherk unable to continue and calling a conclusion to the prolific fight.

10. Mark Hunt vs. Mirko Cro Cop

It was rematch of sorts as former K-1 kickboxers Mirko Cro Cop and Mark Hunt were pitted against one another once again, though this time the bout took place under the PRIDE banner.
No matter—the bout might as well have been a K-1-regulated match.
In their original outing, Cro Cop edged Hunt over the course of five rounds, dropping "The Super Samoan" midway through the match with his infamous high kick.
However, when the two met one another some three years later, Hunt managed to stifle Cro Cop's attack with aggressive, forward movement of his own.
Eventually, the hotly contested match was declared a split decision, where the New Zealand native exacted revenge and was awarded the win.

9. Chuck Liddell vs. Vitor Belfort

In 2002, both Vitor Belfort and Chuck Liddell were regarded as two of the best light heavyweight fighters in their class.
Belfort, then 24, already made waves inside the UFC as the proverbial "Phenom," starching competition with his incredible boxing prowess, while Liddell made a career of impressively knocking out tough opposition, thanks to his kickboxing background.
The two heavy hitters went to war, engaging in a three-round battle that served as the main event for the awkward titled "UFC 37.5," which served as a last-ditch effort for the organization to be aired live on Fox Sports Net's The Best Damn Sports Show Period.
The action was even throughout, the Liddell seemed to gain the upper hand when he managed to drop the Brazilian later in the bout with one of his infamous winging right hooks. Liddell was declared the winner by decision and both men would later claim the 205-pound title.

8. Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva vs. Guy Mezger

Guy Mezger, though he has never worn UFC or PRIDE gold, has long been regarded as one of the best light heavyweight fighters to ever lace up.
The former karate specialist participated in many memorable battles throughout his career, but perhaps his most prolific battles to date have been against legends in Wanderlei Silva and Chuck Liddell.
In both bouts, Mezger showed why he was a feared striker, rocking both Liddell and Silva in the early goings of the match.
His heavy, low kicks were on display as well, though Mezger eventually succumbed to decisive finishes against both Silva and Liddell, who managed to give the Texan a taste of his own medicine, finishing him off on strikes before the final bell.

It's been dubbed as one of the most important fights in mixed martial arts history and is arguably the biggest heavyweight showdown of all time.
Two-time K-1 World Grand Prix runner-up Mirko Cro Cop made his way up the ranks of the mixed martial arts circuit in Japan, eventually taking on PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko for his title in 2005.
While the consensus believed the longer the fight stayed on the feet, the more likely Cro Cop could soon find the knockout finish opposite of the famed Russian fighter.
Emelianenko engaged Cro Cop blow for blow for three rounds, attacking with fast hooks inside the pocket.
Cro Cop had his moments, attacking with powerful jabs, straights and kicks to the body that damaged the heavyweight stalwart, though Emelianenko was able to keep the Croatian on his heels for the entire match, walking away with the well-deserved decision win.

6. Nick Diaz vs. Marius Zaromskis

Though Nick Diaz's foundation remains his world class Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills, his budding boxing skills are rapidly becoming perhaps his most dangerous skill set.
Both Diaz and Marius Zaromskis, the DREAM 168-pound champion, met in January of last year in order to determine the first Strikeforce welterweight champion.
Zaromskis, who hails from Lithuania, derives from a heavy kickboxing background. Of his 15 career victories, 11 come by some form of knockout.
In their welterweight clash, the action was early dictated by Diaz and his unorthodox boxing skills, which kept Marius at the end of his reach. Zaromskis eventually waded in the fire, dropped Diaz with a powerful right hook, though failed to put him away.
Diaz recovered and began to unload shots to the head and body of his opponent, wearing him down en route to an impressive and emphatic first-round TKO win.

5. Melvin Manhoef vs. Robbie Lawler

As far as middleweights go, Robbie Lawler and Melvin Manhoef are perhaps the single most devastating strikers in the class.
Both possess true one-punch knockout power, which Melvin has translated all the way up the heavyweight division, infamously KO'ing former K-1 World Grand Prix Champion Mark Hunt in just 18 seconds in December of 2008.
Both Lawler and Manhoef, another veteran of the K-1 circuit, met in January of last year under the Strikeforce banner.
Manhoef attacked early and often on the lead leg with chopping low kicks. Lawler was visibly hurt in the early going, and just as the Dutchman waded in for the finish, the American caught him with a devastating right hook, sealing the deal in what was one of the biggest comeback's in recent memory.

4. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

In a battle of bitter rivals in opposing camps, Chute Boxe and Brazilian Top Team were well represented as former PRIDE stars Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira engaged in a memorable battle.

The two light heavyweight standouts were pitted against one another in June of 2005, taking part in the illustrious PRIDE Middleweight Grand Prix tournament, which featured a bevy of talent, including Wanderlei Silva, Quinton Jackson and Ricardo Arona, among others.

The two bangers dropped one another in the opening round and went blow for blow over the course of the next two rounds, both going tit for tat with punches and kicks.

The fresher "Shogun" was eventually awarded the decision win, though both men put a stamp on their spot in mixed martial arts history in one single bout, which has been described as one of the biggest matchups to come to fruition under the PRIDE banner.

3. Nick Diaz vs. KJ Noons II

It's perhaps Nick Diaz's proudest victory, but he wouldn't tell you that.
The former Strikeforce welterweight champion was pitted against rival KJ Noons in his first title defense in October of last year.
It was a rematch from nearly three years prior, where the two met in a 160-pound championship bout, where Noons' sharp boxing prowess was on display, dropping Diaz in the early going of their match while opening up several cuts along the face of the Stockton native.
The bout was eventually called at the end of the first round under the advice of the doctor, due to the multiple lacerations.
In their second outing, Diaz had come into the bout with less scar tissue and a better understanding of his stand-up arsenal, dropping Noons in the first round with a counter right hook.
Throughout the course of the next four rounds, Diaz peppered Noons with shots to the head and body, eventually out-landing the former pro boxer by more than 40 strikes.
In the end, Diaz exacted revenge when he settled for the decision win in a bout that was dubbed "Fight of the Year" at Strikeforce's Best of 2010 Awards.

2. Jose Aldo vs. Mark Hominick

In his first foray into the UFC, featherweight champion Jose Aldo made a memorable debut.
The devastating striker met with the equally dangerous Mark Hominick, where the two men served as the co-headliner for UFC 129, which took place at the 55,000-plus capacity crowd at the Rogers Centre in Montreal.
Aldo managed to drop Hominick on several occasions throughout the bout, though the Canadian hung tough and tagged the Brazilian with some shots of his own.
It was a great introduction of the 145-pound class in the UFC, where eventually both men secured "Fight of the Night" honors for their efforts, though Aldo was ultimately declared the winner by decision, despite fading in the later rounds.

It was a bout that, for a long time, was only "wishful thinking."
However, after the PRIDE organization folded, a flood of talent was brought into the UFC, and one of the most prized possessions of the defunct promotion was none other than Wanderlei Silva.
"The Axe Murderer" has flirted with the idea of fighting fellow striker Chuck Liddell for a long time, though the stars aligned and the two finally met at UFC 79 in a blockbuster, light heavyweight showdown.
The fight did not fail to live up to its expectations, as the two went toe to toe for three rounds, both tagging each other back and forth, though Liddell eventually walked away the winner by decision due to his tied in takedowns throughout.
Liddell may have recorded the win, however both men took away moral victories, cementing their legacies as fan favorites who never fail to deliver.
Both earned the evenings "Fight of the Night" award for their efforts, and the bout was later recognized as the "Fight of the Year" at the World MMA Awards in 2008, hosted by Fighters Only Magazine.
