Default HBO Sports Presents: Jan Zaveck vs. Andre Berto Saturday, September 3

The Broadcast Will Begin at 7:30 P.M. PT / 10:30 P.M. ET on HBO East

Jan Zaveck vs. Andre Berto

IBF welterweight championship

There will be no rest this Labor Day weekend for two of the best welterweights in the world. On September 3, reigning IBF welterweight champion Jan Zaveck comes to America to put his IBF welterweight title on the line against former WBC champion Andre Berto from the Beau Rivage Theatre at Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi.

HBO Sports highlights a former world champion’s shot at redemption against a current world titleholder when HBO BOXING AFTER DARK: JAN ZAVECK VS. ANDRE BERTO AND GARY RUSSELL, JR. VS. LEONILO MIRANDA is seen SATURDAY, SEPT. 3 (10:30 p.m. ET/PT) from the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, Miss. The HBO Sports team of Bob Papa, Max Kellerman and Roy Jones Jr. will be ringside for the Labor Day weekend event, which will be available in HDTV, closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino.

Former welterweight titleholder Andre Berto (27-1, 21 KOs) returns to the ring for the first time since his tough unanimous decision loss to Victor Ortiz on April 16. Known for his lightning-fast hand speed and quick-burst explosiveness, the 27-year-old Berto, of Winter Haven, Fla., is looking to silence the doubters and take away Jan Zaveck’s hard-earned 147-pound title in this 12-round contest.

Making his American debut, 25-year-old Jan Zaveck (31-1-1, 18 KOs), of Ptuj, Slovenia is the only Slovenian boxer ever to hold a world championship boxing title, and is the reigning Slovenian Sportsman of the Year. Following the first loss of his career in Nov. 2008, the hard-hitting Zaveck has knocked out four of his last five opponents.

Berto (27-1, 21 KOs), 27, of Winter Haven, FL, is coming off the first loss of his career, and the loss of his WBC title, on April 17 when he dropped a razor thin 12-round decision to “Vicious” Victor Ortiz, a classic battle that saw both fighters on the canvas twice and one that is considered the front runner for 2011 Fight of the Year. Prior to that Berto, a 2004 Haitian Olympian, had defended his title five times after winning it in 2008 via seventh round knockout of Miguel Angel Rodriguez.

“I am excited to get back in the ring and get gold back around my waist,” said Berto. “Everyone who knows me knows that it wasn’t the real Andre Berto in the ring in April. I’m focused on returning to reestablishing my dominance in the welterweight division and it starts with Jan Zaveck.”

Zaveck (31-1, 18 KOs), 35, originally from Ptuj, Slovenia, but now living in Germany, captured the IBF title in December, 2009 with a shocking third round stoppage of Issac Hlatshwayo in Hlatshwayo’s native South Africa. Since then, Zaveck has defended the title three times, including a majority decision win in 2010 over Rafal Jackiewicz, the only man to have previously defeated him. His bout versus Berto will mark his first professional appearance in the United States.

“I am coming to the United States to put on a great show,” said Zaveck. “When I get on the plane back to Europe, I will have my title belt.”

“Beau Rivage is happy to be partnering with DiBella Entertainment and HBO Sports to bring world championship boxing back to Biloxi,” said George P. Corchis, Jr., President and Chief Operating Officer of MGM Resorts Regional Operations. “The headliner of Andre Berto vs. Jan Zaveck is a very competitive match with Berto seeking to regain another world title and Zaveck, who hasn’t lost since 2008, fighting his first professional bout in the United States. We look forward to putting on a world-class event.”

Andre Berto who will be taking on Jan Zaveck in what will be a very exciting fight to say the least, Berto is coming into this match on the back of losing out against Victor Ortiz in April and now he will be hoping to get back to track as this was his first defeat in his great career so far. Next up is the fight against Jan Zaveck which will be and should be a good fight.

Andre Berto berto has the career record of 27 wins and just 1 defeat, while 21 of his 27 wins came as the result of knock outs, while Jan Zaveck has an impressive record of 31 wins while 18 of his wins came as the rsesult of KO and he has just 1 defeat in his professional career.

Jan Zaveck holds the IBF title and he has been under severe criticism that he only fight against the weak opponents and he has this great chance of making it to the top by getting a good win agains Andre Berto

The Undercard

In the opening bout, undefeated rising sensation Gary Russell, Jr. (17-0, 10 KOs), from Capitol Heights, Md. makes his HBO debut against hard-hitting Mexican southpaw Leonilo Miranda (32-3, 30 KOs) in a scheduled ten-round featherweight contest.

The night of boxing action on HBO begins at 10:00 p.m. (ET/PT) with the debut of episode two of the four-part all-access reality series “24/7 Mayweather/Ortiz.”
