Red Arrow Robbery Victim Shot By Police

Robbery victim shot by New York police in apparent accident

updated 9:44 PM EDT, Fri September 7, 2012

New York (CNN) -- A New York police officer, in an apparent accident, shot and killed a grocery store clerk early Friday as the man fled a robbery, authorities said.

The case in the Bronx marked another deadly shooting involving police in recent weeks. Other high-profile incidents occurred around Midtown landmarks in broad daylight.

in Friday's incident, police said three suspects entered the corner bodega around 2 a.m. and ordered Reynaldo Cuevas, 20, to lie on the floor as they took cash, lottery tickets, and cigarettes.

One suspect pistol-whipped the night manager, who was there with Cuevas, before retreating to the back of the store after a look-out warned that officers had arrived, police said.

Apparently sensing an opportunity to escape, Cuevas sprinted from the scene and collided at full speed with one of the responding officers, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said at a news conference. "The two became entangled, at which point we believe the officer accidentally discharged his weapon," Kelly said.

Cuevas, who was unarmed and was the nephew of the store's owner, was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital from a gunshot wound to his left shoulder, police said. The officer was not identified. The robbery was captured by surveillance cameras and shown at the news conference.

New York police were involved in two high profile shootings last month. Nine pedestrians suffered bullet or fragment wounds when police shot and killed an armed man outside the Empire State Building on August 24. Jeffrey Johnson had just shot and killed a former coworker, police said.

Police also fatally shot Darrius Kennedy, who they said was brandishing a knife near Times Square on August 11. Police said they ordered Kennedy to drop the weapon and sprayed pepper spray multiple times before using lethal force.

Not to be critical of news posts, as I really enjoy them, I question the newsworthiness of this particular article. Mainly because accidents do happen to all of us. Getting shot by accident as a result of your own actions doesn't seem noteworthy.

Nor does being shot because you refuse to stop threatening someone with a weapon. I know I'm not a kung fo expert and I don't expect anyone else to be. If the individual did not give up with several doses of pepper spray, one can assume he is deadly in his intent. Shooting to wound seems smarter than attempting to deal with it by hand.

I can't fault the police on either of these actions. Both seem reasonable outcomes, given the circumstances.

*edit* After reading what I responded with it sounds sort of harsh. This is not a fault of yours, FreaknDavid. Rather I take it to be a fault of CNN, a national news service, and it's reporting methods. I'm left with the idea that despite all the political foo-fa-raw going on, the idea they could be spend the valuable time the reporters provide with fact checking, exposure of lies and schemes, and investigative reporting; they turn to something like this for a page filler. No wonder CNN is in such dire straights for viewership. Looks to me like they need some serious head chopping and the highest levels to set things right again.

CNN are crap and usually always late on any reports....for example, they have recently just reported that teeth whitening damages teeth...halloooooo the UK has known this for years and dentists there wont use it.

They have just in the last couple of days that the US "discovered" other damaging things to peoples health, like caffinated coffee may be good for the heart after all... what a joke... As a person that has serious heart problems, I discovered that a long time ago,,, it stimulates the heart, NOT damages it..

Check the BBC and The Guardian UK, & the Telegraph UK newspapers on line...... CNN usually report what is in there days/weeks later.... gee you have to laugh dont you? DUH!

I most certainly fault the US cops on many things photostill, cos I read a lot like you do, and to my mind they are way too heavy handed and brutal, especially towards black & hispanic people in the US. They make many mistakes in both their handling of incidents and their investigations thereafter,,,,,,thus many innocent people are in jail because of that. & the pertaining DA's will never admit they are wrong, so some innocent people remain in jail.... Sad.

Freak's report said

Cuevas, who was unarmed and was the nephew of the store's owner.... was the clerk working that day, and probably ran out cos he was scared. The cops did NOT check that before they shot him....Double DUH!

Thanks for the report Freak
