The OAS will help the Dominican Government Control Gun Smuggling

Santo Domingo.- The Organization of American States (OAS) will help the Dominican Government’s ability to control gun smuggling, through the program “Promotion of Firearms Marking in Latin America and the Caribbean” announced Friday.

“The traffic of firearms is one of the main current problems because it’s directly associated with organized crime,” said OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza agreement.

The content of the agreement signed Friday afternoon during a ceremony in the OAS offices in Washington DC, will be disclosed.

Insulza said most weapons “are dealt illegally throughout the region, for which it’s very important to combat their illicit traffic and to mark them so that their whereabouts can be traced.”

The agreement forms part of the Convention against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms (CIFTA), the first binding international instrument in the matter.
Via agreement, the OAS will provide the Dominican Republic a machine to mark firearms, which was donated by Washington.

Thank goodness for that! The sale and control of guns in this country (the D.R.) are very strong, but these controls were undermined by some Americans who thought they were smart by bringing in guns and bragging about it on sites here, and how they had overcome the controls at both the US and DR airports. Some had even sold some of those arms to "untrustworthy men here.

This is not clever by any means and the US also needs to look at their security checks to see how this was possible for them to bring those arms out of the US. JMO

It would not surprise me to learn something like the Fast and Furious, a US government arms sting that went bad, was in operation in the DR. Now I admit that is a stretch of imagination and has nothing to it beyond speculation. After all there is not really a huge drug shipment source leaving the DR as far as I know. So a ready source of endless funds is not as likely.

Honey the DR is the gateway to the US for all the drugs coming from South America, Bush`s Government promised`, and announced to the media, they would provide millions of $$$ to help if the President here agreed to increase the airplanes to fight and stop the many small aircraft that come in from S.A. loaded with drugs......... as usual the US all talk `we are the heros`de da de da. The US also announced to the Press that they had supplied very modern radar to the DR to help.
More lies. The Brits provided this many years ago to the DR and the DR`s Intelligent Units, DNCD, Swat & Bike teams are by far more superior than any I have even seen in the world and that includes the US.

The President here Leonel, took credit to purchase more jets to stop the problem from Brazil.....$38 mill. He is still waiting for the money he was promised, but as usual the US always announces in their media that they were responsible for shooting down some small planes over the DR. Again lies, the DR`s superb Air Force shot them down and all drugs were retrieved and destroyed.

None of your evidence storage or appeal deals in this country. You mess with the cops and your are gone...... I have worked with them and am proud to, and I give my services free.

Even the Canadian Mounties that came here to help investigate a murder of one of their citizens, were impressed by the professionalism and the speed with which the crime was solved. Not many crimes go unsolved in this country, they have a superb network of communication throughout the country. I have personally witnessed how fast and good it is. I helped with a kidnapping and saw the speed that the event was circulated around the country. The victim was found safe, the scumbag kidnappers are with the devil.

The US Marshalls and the DEA have offices here as does Interpol. For such a small country the DR has a lot of power and is heard around the world, everyone wants to be friends with them. Nothing to do with all the oil or gold mines we have........of course not.

The biggest and worst criminals here are ex pats on the run from their home countries, but when requested the DR cops usually finds them very quickly.

Just to add something I forgot in my original post in here, we already have detectors at every airport here now, but they were not supplied by the US, perhaps those latest detectors they promise are more advanced. Lets hope....

You are by no means dumb, in fact many of us enjoy reading your very interesting posts, so keep it up, it makes a pleasant change to see a member post instead of jumping in getting their movies etc and then jumping out....
