World Unites on the Web to Hunt down Tyrant Joseph Kony

For many the idea of becoming the most talked about person on Facebook and Twitter around the world almost overnight would be fantastic.
For a ruthless African guerilla leader like Joseph Kony, intent on evading justice, it's not so ideal.
But that is what's happened in the last few days as A-list celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Will Smith, Oprah Winfrey and P Diddy have joined an online campaign to make Kony's many crimes known to all and hunt him down.

Previously an virtually unknown figure, Kony's infamy has now spread worldwide, thanks to a film on YouTube, which has now been viewed more than 82 million times.
P Diddy's message of support - 'We will stop you' - has been retweeted more than 57,000 times on Twitter alone.
Joseph Kony recruited up to 66,000 child soldiers in the past two decades. His troops often come into villages and kill the adults then rape the girls and force the boys to fight in his army.
He forced others to kill their own parents to sever ties with their families before being recruited into his Lord's Resistance Army.

The video was launched on Monday by U.S. filmmaker Jason Russell, who first travelled to Uganda eight years ago and met Jacob Acaye, who was abducted at the age of 11 to join Kony's army.
Russell, who is the co-founder of San Diego-based charity Invisible Children, was so shocked at this horrific story he vowed to Acaye he would help to 'stop Kony'.
Once his 30-minute film was made, his plan was to use the fame of as many high-profile figures as possible to bring this matter to light, which would then force governments into action.

Oprah Winfrey is another celebrity to have helped publicise the campaign to 'Stop Kony'
The plan has worked, as all this week the hashtags #Kony2012 and #stopKony have been among the top trending topics online around the world.
Microsoft boss Bill Gates and President Barack Obama have also applauded the campaign.
Kony is the lead name on the International Criminal Court list of the world's criminals, and was indicted in 2005 for crimes against humanity.
He is wanted for 33 charges: 12 counts are crimes against humanity, including murder, enslavement, sexual enslavement, and rape.
And 21 counts of war crimes include murder, cruel treatment of civilians, intentionally directing an attack against a civilian population, pillaging, inducing rape, and forced enlisting of children into the rebel ranks.
Kony's LRA has ordered his young army to carry out acts of mutilation on the faces of other youngsters
His guerilla army has forced at least 1.5 million people to flee their homes across the Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic.
He is currently being hunted by a troop of 100 U.S. special forces as well as local troops in four central African countries.
The campaign, although undoubtedly successful at putting the spotlight on Kony, has come under criticism from some quarters.
The charity Invisible Children has been criticised for favoring direct military intervention in Uganda. It also strongly supports the Ugandan Army, which has been accused of widespread torture and other human rights violations.
The group has been accused of exaggerating and manipulating facts surrounding Kony and the LRA to over-emphasise the scale of the abductions and murders committed.
The campaign has not only brought a light on Joseph Kony's acts of savagery, but has also highlighting the need to track him down and bring him to justice
In 2011 Invisible Children raised about $8.7 million but only 37 per cent -- about $3.3 million went to support programs in central Africa.
Others argue Kony has already been marginalised, his forces -- once thousands strong -- have been so depleted that the Ugandan military no longer considers him a threat to the region.
Because of the intensified hunt for Kony, his forces split into smaller groups that can travel the jungle more easily. Experts estimate that the LRA now has only about 250 fighters.
Others have argued that by focusing so much attention on a fading warlord, the Kony 2012 movement is diverting millions of dollars away from charities working to stamp out starvation in the Horn of Africa, slow the spread of AIDS or battle widespread corruption -- all issues that effect far more Africans than a single warlord.
