Unhappy PHOTOS-Dad Hacks 2 Sons Throats & Burns Them To Death

'I'm sorry. Goodbye,' Josh Powell says in email before killing himself, 2 sons

By Chelsea J. Carter, CNN
Updated 5:15 AM EST, Mon February 6, 2012

Explosion kills father, sons.---------------------------------------------------------Josh Powell's wife, Susan Powell-Cox, has been missing for more than two years.

Shortly before he set fire to his Puyallup, Washington, house and killed himself and his two sons, Josh Powell -- a suspect in the 2009 disappearance of his wife -- apparently sent a three-word email to his attorney.

It said simply: "I'm sorry. Goodbye."

It was a tragic end to a puzzling case that began two years earlier in West Valley City, Utah, with the disappearance of 28-year-old Susan Cox-Powell and devolved into a bitter custody dispute between Powell and his wife's parents.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer accused Powell of committing murder-suicide, saying Sunday's fire "was done intentionally."

"This was all on him," Troyer said. "He set this up. He did it." The sheriff's department has copies of the e-mail Powell sent to his attorney as well as family and friends that said "he couldn't live with what was going on," Troyer said.

While a medical examiner had yet to definitively identify the bodies, the sheriff's spokesman said "we believe it is the three of them." "This was something that was done deliberately and intentionally, and the plan was carried out very quickly," he said.

The events appeared to have been set in motion days earlier when a judge refused Powell's petition to regain custody of his children and instead ordered he undergo a number of psychological evaluations -- an order that came after authorities turned up child pornography in the home he shared with his father.

As part of the investigation into Cox-Powell's disappearance, Utah authorities searched a Washington house where Powell, his two sons and his father, Steven Powell, were living last year. During the search, investigators "discovered numerous images and recordings of adult and juvenile females," according to a statement released by the Pierce County sheriff's department.

Powell's father, Steven, was subsequently charged with 14 counts of voyeurism and one count of possessing images of children engaged in sexually explicit conduct, according to court documents. Following the arrest of Powell's father, custody of his sons was given to his wife's parents, Judith and Charles Cox, according to Washington state court records.

On Sunday, shortly after noon, Powell was standing outside his home in a quiet, tree-lined cul-de-sac waiting for a social worker to bring his two boys -- 5-year-old Braden and 7-year-old Charlie -- for a supervised visit, authorities said.

As the children got to the door, Powell pushed the social worker back, quickly brought the two boys inside and locked the door. The social worker, who later reported smelling something similar to gas at the time, tried "pounding the doors, trying to get in," said Gary Franz, a deputy chief with Graham Fire and Rescue. About two minutes later, as she was calling her supervisor, the house exploded, Franz said.

The powerful explosion shook houses and rattled windows, with debris landing on lawns blocks away. "All the walls in the house were on fire, almost immediately," neighbor Ryan Mickle told CNN affiliate KIRO.
"I didn't hear anybody inside."

Jennifer Bleakley, who lived near the Powell home, was in the kitchen making coffee when the explosion violently rattled windows and doors in her home. "It really hurts my heart. My heart ached for those boys anyway," she told CNN affiliate KOMO, wiping away tears.

News of the explosion and deaths quickly made it to Utah, sending shock waves through the Powell-Cox family. "I think this is his admission of guilt, and he just couldn't handle it anymore," Kirk Graves, Powell's brother-in-law, told CNN affiliate KUTV.

Powell was the sole suspect, according to West Valley City Police Chief Buzz Nielsen, in the disappearance of his wife, who went missing on a cold December night in 2009. "We always kept Josh as a target," Nielsen told CNN affiliate KSTU.

According to investigators, Powell had said the last time he saw his wife was the night he and his two sons -- then ages 2 and 4 -- left to go camping. Powell told authorities he left the house sometime after midnight in below-freezing weather for a desert area in Utah's Tooele County.

Cox-Powell's sister eventually reported her missing. A month later, Powell and his children moved from Utah to Washington. As late as last month, Utah authorities were still working to connect Powell to the disappearance of his wife, who authorities believe is dead.

"We just needed a little bit more. Everywhere we looked, it always came back to Josh," Nielsen said. It was that belief that appears to have driven Powell to attempt to cast off suspicion in an affidavit filed as part of last week's custody hearing.

"If anyone wants to be honest with themselves and the situation, the real story is not that anyone is a bad person, including me," he said. "The story is one of overcoming and rising above what many people think are insurmountable challenges."

Desperate 911 calls made outside the home of Josh Powell reveal how a social worker made frantic attempts to alert authorities that the father of two had locked himself and his two young sons in his home.Moments later, Elizabeth Grifin-Hall makes a second call - revealing that Powell has set the house on fire, killing everyone inside.

The release of the dispatch case just one of the new folds in the case, as Josh Powell's father has been formally named a person-of-interest in the disappearance of Susan Powell as Utah police believe he may know something about her location.

The chilling dispatch call brings listeners to the scene of the cruel murder, as Ms Griffin-Hall can be heard saying that she was in the process of dropping the boys off for their visit when Powell grabbed them, slammed the door and refused to let her in.

Butchered: Josh Powell pictured with his sons who were were coming for a visit when he took a hatchet to both of them and blew up the house

Killed: Charlie (left) and Braden (right, shown in a toy car) Powell were hacked nearly to death by their father with a hatchet, but the investigators say that they didn't die until the fire took over the house

A presence: Braden (left) and Charlie (right) stand in front of a memorial picture of their mother Susan, who disappeared in December 2009, while staying at their grandparents house

The recordings, released by the Pierce County Sheriff's office, reveal that Ms Griffn-Hall screamed 'He exploded the house!' after the blaze began.
At first, Ms Griffin-Hall is concerned by Powell's behaviour, telling the 911 dispatcher: 'Nothing like this has ever happened before - one of these supervised visits. I'm really shocked.'

She adds: 'I can hear the kids crying but he still wouldn't let me in.'
Ms Griffin-Hall can be heard telling the 911 operator that she wanted to move her car out of the driveway because she smelled gas coming from the house.

When she pleads for police to be sent to the home, the 911 dispatcher says officers only get sent to life-threatening situations.

SOCIAL WORKER'S FIRST 911 CALL

Elizabeth Griffin-Hall: I’m on a supervised visitation for a court-ordered visit and something, really weird has happened. The kids went in the house and the biological parent, Josh Powell, will not let me in the door. What should I do?
Dispatcher: What’s the address?
Griffin-Hall: 8119 and I think it’s 89th, I don’t know what the address is, let me get in the car nothing like this has happened like this before. I’m really shocked, and I could hear one of the kids crying, and he still won’t let me in... You can’t find me by GPS?
Dispatcher: No.
Griffin-Hall: OK, it is... I still can’t find it. He’s on a very short leash with DHSH, he looked right at me and closed the door. It’s 8119 189th Street Court East Puyallup. I’d like to pull out of the driveway because I smell gasoline, and he won’t let me in.
Dispatcher: He won’t let you out of the driveway?
Griffin-Hall: He won’t let me in the house.
Dispatcher: Whose house is it?
Griffin-Hall: Josh Powell.
Dispatcher: You don’t live there?
Griffin-Hall: No, I’m contracted by the state to provide supervised visitation... He’s the husband of Susan Powell, this is a high-profile case. I was one step in back of them.
Dispatcher: So they went in the house and locked you out?
Griffin-Hall: Yes, he shut the door in my face.
Dispatcher: What is your name?
Griffin-Hall: My name is Elizabeth Griffin-Hall.
Dispatcher: What agency are you with?
Griffin-Hall: Foster Care Resource Network, and the kids have been in there by now approximately ten minutes, and he knows it’s a supervised visit.

Dispatcher: And the dad’s last name?
Griffin-Hall: Powell.
Dispatcher: And his first name?
Griffin-Hall: His first name is Josh.

Dispatcher: Is he alone, or was anyone with him?
Griffin-Hall: I don’t know, I couldn’t get in the house.
Dispatcher: Are you in a vehicle now?
Griffin-Hall: I’m in a 2010 Prius... He won’t let me in. I rang the doorbell and everything. I begged him to let me in.
Dispatcher: Elizabeth, please listen to my questions. What colour is the Toyota Prius?
Griffin-Hall: Gray, dark gray.
Dispatcher: OK, we’ll have someone look for you there.
Griffin-Hall: Do you know how long it will be?
Dispatcher: They have to respond to emergencies, life-threatening situations first.

Griffin-Hall: This could be life-threatening. He was in court on Wednesday and he didn’t get his kids back and this is really... I’m afraid for their lives.
Dispatcher: Has he threatened the lives of the children previously?
Griffin-Hall: I have no idea.
Dispatcher: OK we’ll have the first available deputy contact you.
Griffin-Hall: Thank you.

THE SECOND 911 CALL

Dispatcher: Hello. Were you calling about the fire on 189th street?
Griffin-Hall: Yes, he exploded the house. He exploded the house.
Dispatcher: Ma’am, do you know the exact address?
Griffin-Hall: It’s 8119 189th Court East in Puyallup.
Dispatcher: What are you calling about?
Griffin-Hall: It exploded, the house.
Dispatcher: Do you know where you are?
Griffin-Hall: 8119 189th Street Court East in Puyallup.
Dispatcher: Do you know if there’s anyone in the house?
Griffin-Hall: Yes, there was a man and two children. I just dropped off the children and he wouldn’t let me in the door.
Dispatcher: Stay on the line with me. I’m going to get the fire department. Hang on. Don’t hang up. Stay on the phone here with me ma’am. Fire this is Rose. I’m transferring the lady who has the exact address.
Griffin-Hall: I can hear the fire trucks, but they’re not here yet. It’s 8119.
Dispatcher: We have an engine there.
Griffin-Hall: People are saying there is not somebody here, but there’s a couple of boys, 5 and 7, he has supervised visitation and he blew up the house and the kids.
Dispatcher: The kids and the father were in the house?
Griffin-Hall: Yes, he slammed the door in my face so I kept knocking. I thought it was a mistake, I kept knocking and then I called 911.
Dispatcher: You saw him go back in the house?
Griffin-Hall: He didn’t ever leave the house, he just opened the door, the kids were one step ahead of me, they are 5 and 7, they were one step ahead of me and he slammed the door in my face.
Dispatcher: Do you think he might have done this intentionally?
Griffin-Hall: Yes.
Dispatcher: County, go ahead with what you need.
Dispatcher: What is your name, ma’am?
Griffin-Hall: I’m Elizabeth Griffin-Hall, I’m the supervisor visitation (incoherent noises and crying).
Dispatcher: What is your last name?
Griffin-Hall calmly spells it.
Dispatcher: Where are you at right now?
Griffin-Hall: I’m at 8112 on the same court.
Dispatcher: So you are at 8112 189th Street Court East.
Griffin-Hall: Yes.
Dispatcher: Are you in the car?
Griffin-Hall: I was in it I’m standing outside it right now.
Dispatcher: Is that your home address?
Griffin-Hall: No, I’m the supervised visitation coordinator.
Dispatcher: What is the person’s name?
Griffin-Hall: His name is Josh Powell. Just a minute the sheriff is here.
Dispatcher: Go ahead and talk to the officer, ma’am.

Ms Grifin-Hall replies: 'This could be life-threatening. He went to court on Wednesday and he didn't get his kids back. I'm afraid for their lives.'

Moments later, with Powell's house on fire, Ms Griffin-Hall calls back and tells the dispatcher that she believed he intentionally blew up the house, killing himself and his children.
On the same day, Powell's sister Alina called 911 to say she was receiving 'weird' messages from her brother via email and voicemail that made her too 'terrified to drive over there' herself.

Susan Powell went missing in 2009, and recently her son was saying that she was in the trunk of the car on the night before she disappeared

'I'm not afraid of him,' she says. 'He's never hurt me. I'm afraid of seeing something I don't want to see.'

A voice message left by Powell to his family - just 20 minutes before the fire that killed him and his children - said: 'Hello, this is Josh and I'm calling to say goodbye. I'm not able to live without my sons, and I'm not able to go on anymore. I'm sorry to everyone I've hurt. Goodbye.'

The recordings have been released as new details are emerging about how the Powell boys had started talking about the whereabouts of their missing mother in the months before their death.

Chuck and Cindy Cox - the grandparents of seven-year-old Charlie and five-year-old Braden - are saying that the younger son had drawn a picture of their mother Susan in the trunk of the family car, with their father Josh Powell in the driver seat.

Susan Powell went missing in December 2009 and Josh was the sole person-of-interest in the case, which is still on-going as her body has never been found. Just today police added Steven as a person-of-interest because they feel he might know something from his years of living with Josh.

Josh Powell ushered his boys in the house and blocked the social worker from entering. She then called her supervisor saying she smelled gas, and moments later the house went up in a fiery blaze

Unexpected: The children were at the home for a court-ordered supervised visit with their father, and there had been a number of visits before that had happened without incident

Next step: Multiple investigations are underway and an autopsy provided some grim details about the way the boys died, which involved being brutally hacked by their father and smoke expatiation

'Over the Christmas holidays, Chuck (Cox) sent me an email saying something like "Real important- one of the boys says if we go to the mine we will find mummy,"' Ann Bremner, one of the Cox's lawyers who was focusing on the disappearance of Susan, told MailOnline exclusively.

Grandfather in jail: Steve Powell was arrested on child porn charges in September and remains in jail on bond. Since then the children had lived with the Coxes, Susan Powell's parents

Ms Bremner said that Mr Cox immediately told police about the boy's admission, but nothing was done.

In the days since the explosion, the grandparents' other lawyer Steven Downing has said that Charlie, the elder son, had 'talked about that they went camping and that Mummy was in the trunk. Mum and Dad got out of the car and Mom disappeared.'

'They were beginning to verbalise more,' said Mr Downing.

The news of the picture adds to the theory put forth by members of Susan's family that Josh was desperate to silence the boys as they began linking him directly to her disappearance.

Susan’s sister Denise Cox also spoke about the unthinkable tragedy. She told CNN’s Nancy Grace today that the boys were forbidden by their father to talk about their mother or even mention her name.
Ms Cox said over the last few months, Charlie and Braden had started to talk about her to her parents, who would then relay the information to Denise.
She speculated that Josh drugged Susan preceding her death ‘so it didn’t seem unnatural for the boys when he took her.’
Ms Cox added: ‘I believe he told them they were going to go look for mines and I believe he buried her somewhere out wherever he went.’

That sentiment was echoed by Josh's brother-in-law Kirk Graves, who thinks that Charlie's discussion of the details played into Josh's decision to kill his children.

Killer: Josh Powell plays with his son Braden last year. He was being investigated in the disappearance of his wife, Susan Powell

Grieving: Chuck and Judy Cox speak with reporters at their home in Puyallup, Washington. Chuck puts his arm around his wife as they fight back tears

'They were becoming more fun, more vocal. They were acting like little boys again, which we hadn't seen in a while. … I imagine that part of Josh's motivation was, what could he do to hide that story?'
As the investigation continues into the Sunday afternoon gas explosion that killed Josh, Charlie and Braden, authorities are learning the true extent of Powell's planning of the murder.

A voicemail left by Powell to his brother and family- thought to be the unhinged father's last words- was released Tuesday.

'Hello this is Josh, and I am calling to say goodbye,' he said in the recording. 'I am not able to live without my sons, and I'm not able to go on anymore. I'm sorry to everyone I've hurt. Goodbye.'

Police are still trying to understand the extent of his planned murder, as the details show that he was determined to kill.

Loving grandfather: Chuck Cox plays with his grandsons, Charlie, right, and Braden, left, giving Charlie a piggy-back ride

Though smoke inhalation was listed as the primary cause of death for Charles and Braden, wounds were found on the brothers' bodies showing what the medical examiner described as ‘chop marks’.
Investigators found a hatchet in the ruins of the house and said Charles was struck on his neck, and his brother had injuries to both his skull and his neck. Authorities guess that Powell tried to kill his sons first with the hatchet before he set his home ablaze with the three of them inside it.
The bodies were discovered in the centre of the house, with a large gasoline canister next to their charred remains.

'We stated our fear many times, that if he was feeling desperate, that he would possibly kill himself and the boys, that this kind of thing could happen.'
-Grandmother Cindy Cox

Powell's death was listed as a suicide, while his sons' deaths were classified as homicides, according to the medical examiner's report. The boys' grandparents will be holding their funeral on Saturday at the local Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-Day Saints Stake Center in Puyallup, Washington.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Sergeant Ed Troyer said Josh Powell sent long emails to some people, including his cousin and pastor, with instructions such as where to find his money and how to shut off his utilities.
He also dropped off his sons' toys and books to charities throughout the area.

Investigators from the Salt Lake City suburb where Susan Powell lived with her family before disappearing had travelled to the site of the blast to continue what remained an active investigation into Susan Powell's disappearance, a police spokesman said.

'We had hoped many times for the arrest of Josh Powell,' Anne Bremner, a lawyer representing Susan's parents, told Reuters. She called the boys' deaths 'beyond horrific.'

Happier times: Grandparents Chuck and Judy Cox are seen in pictures with their grandsons Charlie and Braden (who are on the left and right of each picture, respectively)

Distraught: The boys had been living with their grandparents Chuck Cox (pictured) and his wife Judy since the court appointed them custody in September due to the ongoing investigation into Josh

None of the emails, however, said anything about what happened to his wife, and were sent just before the huge fire.
'They do show that he was intending on doing this before it occurred,' Sgt Troyer said. 'We believe he planned this event out and had taken certain steps. This is definitely a deliberate, planned out event.'
He said that authorities found two, five-gallon gasoline cans inside the home. A five-gallon can was spread throughout the house and used as an accelerant in the huge blaze.
Another can was found by the bodies, he said.

‘There had been previous visits and they had gone fine. People need to understand that in Washington state, the courts make the decisions on visitation. We were following their ruling’
-social services spokesman Thomas Shapley told MailOnline.

Josh Powell was under investigation for both the disappearance of Susan and to see if he was involved at all with his father, Steven Powell’s, arrest for voyeurism and child pornography.

Josh Powell's sister Alina Powell released a statement Tuesday and while she did not excuse his maddening, murderous action, she did attempt to place the blame on pressure he had been under due to the speculation about Susan's disappearance.

'Josh and his boys spent more than two years being crushed alive by hate, harassment, and abuse,' she said in a statement.

'None of us could have anticipated the devastating tragedy that took place Sunday, but what this unimaginable loss shows is that hate will never end well. Hate kills.'

The boys' grandparents slammed authorities Monday for allowing them to be sent on a court-ordered visit to their crazed father’s house.
They revealed today that their grandsons did not want to go to the home of their father, who they suspected of killing the boys’ mother Susan who disappeared two years ago.

In a decision that is bound to haunt her for the rest of her life, Mrs Cox admitted that she encouraged her young grandsons to go to the house where they would be murdered.

Ruins: The case worker smelled gas when she was standing in front of the house and she immediately called 911

Searching for answers: There are now three investigations looking into the fatal incident

Theory: Susan Powell's sister Denise Cox, pictured last September, told Nancy Grace today that she thinks Powell drugged her sister and hid her in a mine

Mr Cox said that Powell’s attitude in recent months scared them into thinking that he may do something to harm the children- a premonition that tragically came to fruition.
‘We stated our fear many times, that if he was feeling desperate, that he would possibly kill himself and the boys, that this kind of thing could happen,’ Mr Cox told People magazine.
‘They were all aware of our fears - that he would take a cowardly way out,’ he told the magazine.

‘If he felt there was no way out, that he wouldn't let anyone else have them. They were possessions to him.’
‘Look what happened,’ Mrs Cox said through tears on Monday.

The Coxes said that on Sunday, before the court-ordered case worker arrived to bring the boys to their father’s rented home in Tacoma, they were playing happily in the grandparents home.

Grandparents: Chuck Cox, pictured, and his wife Judy with whom the children were living, are said to be devastated

Under investigation: Most recently, Josh Powell was ordered to undergo psycho sexual evaluation

‘But I knew that they're supposed to be able to see their dad.’
It was not the first time that Charlie and Braden had been accompanied by a case worker to their supervised visits with their father.
‘There had been previous visits and they had gone fine,’ social services spokesman Thomas Shapley told MailOnline.

He said Ms Griffin-Hall arrived at the house with the boys and was separated from them by Powell, who slammed the door and would not let her in.

She banged on the door and windows but he would not respond.
Mr Shapley added: ‘She went back to the car and called her supervisor and 911. It’s fortunate that she went back to the car because that’s when the house exploded. If she hadn’t she would have probably lost her life as well.'

According to Reuters, she is now 'suffering from grave emotional trauma,' after witnessing the horrific events unfold.

Sad reflections: Kirk Graves, brother-in-law to Josh and Susan Powell, says he takes Josh's suicide-murder as an 'admission' he was involved in his wife's disappearance

While more attention is now being paid to the on-going search for Susan, the most pressing matter is Sunday's fatal blast. There will be at least three investigations into the incident: law enforcement officials will conduct a criminal inquiry; the department of social and health services will do an internal ‘staffing’ investigation; and then they will also have a formal child fatality review.

The child fatality review is mandated by Washington state law and will involve external investigators.
Mr Shapley said Ms Griffin-Hall was not a Child Protective Services employee but a contract worker with a private agency, called Foster Care Resources Network.

He said it was very common for case workers to be contracted from other companies.

Powell's brother-in law Kirk Graves, 39, said the family was stunned by the news.
'We never contemplated the idea he would do something like this. You just don't expect it from a father,' he said.

'I think this was a last-ditch effort on his part to hurt everyone around him and escape all of the problems,’ Mr Graves told People magazine.

He told the Salt Lake Tribune that he takes the explosion as an admission of guilt in Susan's case.
'In my personal opinion this is Josh's admission, that he did it. I know others won't interpret it that way.'

Steve Downing, a lawyer for Susan Powell's parents Chuck and Judy Cox said: 'It's the most horrifying thing you can imagine happening.'
'They are beyond devastated. They always feared Josh would do something like this.'
END

This is absolutely dreadful and I think serious actions should be taken against whomever allowed this crazy murder suspect access to his children, whether supervised or not. The little children did not want to go to see him, the Grandparents did their best to stop it.....and nobody listened

Action should be taken against those stupid 911 opertors who asked the same questions again and again and wasted time. That poor Social Worker did her best and it was fantastic she remained calm on those 911 calls.

If some of the know-it-nothing authorities had listened and that nutjob arrested after the children told what happened to their Mummy, they would still be alive today.

Its just horrific, they died by a terrible death and my sympathies go out to those poor Grandparents

I can't imagine what those poor little boys saw and heard or what was going through their young minds while with their father.
It is a horror that no child should ever have to go through.
