Another Winter Storm Will Hit The Northeast and Wisconsin Today

National Weather Service:

12-18 Inches Of Snow Expected.

Northern Wisconsin is set to get
walloped by heavy snow and high winds.

12-18 inches of heavy, wet snow with gusts off Lake Superior at 50 miles per hour are expected.

Another April winter storm is taking aim at northwestern Wisconsin on Wednesday, the third snow storm to strike that area in less than three weeks.

The National Weather Service says this storm will bring about a foot of wet, heavy snow, falling at 1 to 2 inches per hour once it ramps up late Wednesday morning.

Travel and visibility will be crippled by northeasterly winds gusting to 50 to 60 miles per hour off Lake Superior.

Duluth National Weather Service Science Officer Dan Miller says the storm has a wide path.

“Our confidence is pretty high that that corridor from extreme east-central Minnesota – so the I-35 corridor between the Twin Cities and Duluth, over into the bulk of northwestern Wisconsin – is going to be dumped on pretty hard,” said Miller.

Ashland County is the bulls-eye for this storm. County Highway Commissioner Emmer Shields said the number of storms is taking a toll on his plows.

“We’ve gone through more fuel and more blades and cutting edges and salt and salt fans than we have in a long, long time,” said Shields.

And Shields says it’s made the hard life of his snow plow operators extra tough this winter. But now that it’s April, he gives them a little pep talk.

“Basically I tell them the same thing every time: This is the last one,” said Shields. “That’s about all we can do: We hope it’s the last one.”

Shields might be right. The National Weather Service extended outlook does call for warm temperatures for the next couple of weeks.

“I think Wisconsin has got a triple whammy coming: Heavy snow, ice, and wind,” said Tod Pritchard, a spokesman for Wisconsin Emergency Management. “And those three in combination is going to make for very difficult driving conditions and the huge potential for downed trees, powerlines, that kind of thing.”

Pritchard says people should make sure they have the supplies they need now, because there may be power outages and travel in some areas will be difficult to impossible.

Spring will come with a vengeance in the coming week up north: The (NWS) is warning about the possibility of flooding.

The ground is anywhere from bare to three feet deep in snow. Throw in sudden warm temperatures, frozen ground and some rain, and you have creeks and rivers that are expected to swell next week. NWS

Officer Dan Miller in Duluth says April set a record for any month any year since 1871 with 50 inches of snow.

Quote:

"We didn't build up all of this snowpack in just a few days. We're certainly not going to melt it all in just a few days either, even with temperatures in the 50s and 60s. So, once you get that water moving, it does take a little while to filter through."

Miller says the wildcard is predicted rain next week. Otherwise, he says the winter pattern is pretty much over.

In its weekly outdoor report, the Department of Natural Resources Brule Ranger Station says 44 inches of snow fell there in just the last two weeks. They also quote a winter-weary six-year-old who said: "I hope winter has its last finger on the cliff and someone stomps on it."
