  • 70 MILLION AT RISK FROM MASSIVE Storms & Tornedos...


A dangerous outbreak of severe weather is developing across the Midwest and Ohio Valley, capable of producing dangerous thunderstorms and widespread wind damage similar to that of a derecho.

Some of the cities and towns most at risk for severe weather into Wednesday night include Chicago, Columbus, Ohio, Fort Wayne, Ind., Aurora, Ill., Dayton, Ohio, and Louisville, Ky.

The storms can be rapidly moving and generate wind gusts over 80 or even 100 mph. The vast majority of observed wind reports with this type of system, however, are usually between 60 and 70 mph.

Though unconfirmed, tornadoes had already been reported in multiple states across the Midwest by Wednesday evening.

1:16 a.m. EDT Thursday:
A thunderstorm just north of Marysville, Ohio is showing signs of rotation and the potential for tornado development.

12:50 a.m. EDT Thursday: A line of storms moving through western Ohio brought wind gusts up to 70 mph.

12:11 a.m. EDT Thursday: Possible tornado reported by a trained spotter along Route 281 in Custar, Ohio.

12:04 a.m. EDT Thursday: A wall cloud was reported by a trained spotter 3 miles north of Kilda, Ohio, but it was too dark to see rotation.

10:20 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Rotating thunderstorm over Lake Erie is moving towards the city of Cleveland, Ohio.

10:10 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Tornado-capable thunderstorm threatening eastern Indiana near the cities of Bluffton and Berne.

9:28 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado is moving from northern Knox County, south of Mansfield, Ohio towards the Danville area.

9:05 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Radar velocities have indicated that storms moving through Pulaski County, IN are producing winds up to 90 mph.

8:45 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Trained spotters and Fire Department reporting many trees and power lines down north and east of Mason City, IA

7:50 p.m. CDT Wednesday: The park service for Shabbona Lake State Park reports that boats were tossed onto other boats by strong thunderstorm winds earlier this evening. Large trees in the park are snapped at the trunk or uprooted and power poles have been downed near the state park office.

7:41 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Delayed report of a tornado from trained spotters in Prospect, Ohio in Marion County at 7:30 p.m. CDT.

7:30 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Trained spotters report a funnel cloud and golfball-sized hail (1.75 inches) and tennis ball-sized hail (2.5 inches) in Marion County, Ohio.

7:10 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Delayed report of a tornado seen on the ground by trained spotters 5 miles south of Massbach, Ill. moving southeast at 45 miles per hour at 6:58 p.m.

7:00 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Wall cloud reported 6 miles west of Rochester in Fulton County, Ind.

6:50 p.m. CDT Wednesday: 1.22 inches of rain recorded in only 45 minutes this evening near South Beaver Dam in Dodge County, Wis.

6:24 p.m. CDT Wednesday: A train spotter reports a funnel cloud 4 miles northwest of Dumont in Franklin County, Iowa.

6:22 p.m. CDT Wednesday: An emergency manager in Belmond in Wright County, Iowa reported damage on the north side of town with several businesses damaged or destroyed. In a residential area north of town, several homes suffered severe damage with one destroyed.

6:17 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Funnel cloud reported by law enforcement in St. Donatus, Iowa in Jackson County.

6:08 p.m. CDT Wednesday: As severe weather unleashes over Chicago, more than 350 arriving and departing flights have been cancelled from Chicago O'Hare International Airport, according to flightstats.com.

5:48 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Funnel cloud observed by an emergency manager in Key West, Iowa near Highway 151.

5:31 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Funnel cloud sighted by a trained spotter in South Elgin, Ill. at Route 31 and Stearns Road.

5:29 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Winds were estimated to be gusting to 70 miles per hour betweenYorkville and Plano, Ill. A trained spotter reported trees bent over and 1 inch hail falling.

5:08 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Street flooding reported by a trained spotter in Boscobel, Wis.

4:57 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Trained spotter reports two tornadoes west of Hampton, IA (Franklin County) heading east.

4:56 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Damage reported in Wright County, Iowa from a potential tornado, NWS Des Moines reports. Power lines are downed near Belmond and a possible gas leak has been identified.

4:53 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Funnel cloud sighted by trained spotter in Somonauk, Ill. by Chicago Road and Somonauk Road at 4:44 p.m. CDT.

4:42 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Trained spotter reports seeing a tornado on the ground 5 miles northwest of Latimer, Iowa in Franklin County. Spotter reports that the debris cloud is visible.

4:36 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Delayed report of a tornado on the ground in Wright County, Iowa, 1 mile north of Belmond at 4:24 pm CDT, law enforcement reports.

4:32 p.m. CDT Wednesday: At 4:00 p.m. CDT, the SPC issued a Particularly Dangerous Situationfor northeast Illinois, northern Indiana, southern lower Michigan, northwest Ohio, southeast Wisconsin, Lake Erie and Lake Michigan.

4:15 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Funnel cloud sighted by law enforcement in Guttenberg, Iowa in Clayton County.

4:10 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Funnel cloud sighted by trained spotter in Paw Paw, Ill., by Route 251 and Interstate 39.

4:10 p.m. CDT Wednesday: Possible tornado bearing down on Winnebago, Ill., 95 miles northwest of Chicago. May also affect Rockford, Ill.

4:03 p.m. CDT Wednesday: A storm located northeast of Amboy, Ill., nearly 100 miles west of Chicago, is capable of producing a tornado.

3:29 p.m. CDT Wednesday: A trained spotted reported a funnel cloud which dropped nearly halfway to the ground before dissipating in Franklin County, Iowa, 5 miles from Alexander.

2:34 p.m. CDT Wednesday: "Thunderstorms developing across eastern Iowa, northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin will quickly turn severe," AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Brian Edwards said. "Conditions are ripe across this zone stretching from Mason City, Iowa, through Dubuque, Iowa, over to Chicago for a few long-lived, long-track tornadoes. These initial thunderstorms will have the greatest potential to produce tornadoes before they transition into an organized complex later this evening and overnight as a widespread damaging wind threat shifts farther east into the Ohio Valley."

1:50 p.m. CDT Wednesday: The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has issued a Particularly Dangerous Situation for northeastern Iowa, northern Illinois, extreme southeastern Minnesota and southwestern Wisconsin through 9:00 p.m. CDT. Primary threats include several intense tornadoes, possible wind gusts to 80 mph and very large hail.
