Breaking news-Tropical Cyclone bears down on Lord Howe Island

RESIDENTS and holidaymakers on Lord Howe Island are being warned to bunker down as tropical cyclone Sandra approaches.

A Bureau of Meteorology cyclone watch has been issued for the Pacific island as Sandra tracks south off the NSW coast.

"The cyclone is currently weakening, however it still may reintensify as it moves further south towards the Lord Howe Island region," the Bureau said on Wednesday.

The NSW State Emergency Service said the island's 350-odd locals should start preparing now for gusts of up to 110km/h and possible flash flooding on Thursday and Friday.

Winds may increase further during Friday, the bureau said, and Storm Force Winds with destructive gusts to about 130km/h could occur.

Very rough seas, heavy swells and abnormally high tides may also impact on the island from Thursday.
