Red Arrow Second Deadly Earthquake Hits Northern Italy-PHOTOS

Deadly Northern Italy Earthquake 6.0 Magnitude, hits Heritage Sites

People were jolted out of their beds to seek the relative safety of streets

Deadly earthquake rocks northern Italy
At least seven people killed and many historical buildings damaged in 6.0-magnitude quake near city of Bologna.

At least seven people have been killed and up to 50 others injured in a 6.0-magnitude earthquake near the northern Italian city of Bologna, according to the Italian news agency ANSA.
The strong quake struck at 4:04am local time (02:04 GMT) on Sunday in the country's industrial heartland while most people were sleeping, prompting thousands to run into the streets in panic.
Hospitals were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Al Jazeera's Sabina Castelfranco, reporting from the worst affected town of Finale Emilia, said: "Scared people are out on the street and have refused to go back to their homes."
"There are apparently 13,000 people that have been displaced, and it is unclear whether there is going to be more victims found," she said.
"Authorities in the area have schools closed down until the situation stabilises," said Castelfranco.
"The new buildings are intact but mediaeval buildings, some of the bell towers and churches, have completely collapsed. You can see huge mountains of rubble in front of these beautiful buildings."

One person, believed to be a Moroccan man working a night shift in a polyester factory, died when he was hit by falling debris.
Two men, also working a night shift, were killed when part of a modern ceramics factory made of steel collapsed in the town of Sant'Agostino.
"He wasn't supposed to be there. He changed shifts with a friend who wanted to go to the beach," the mother of one of the victims told state television.

A woman was reported to have died after suffering a heart attack because of the quake, and several dozen people suffered minor injuries.
Rescue officials were checking reports that other people were buried under rubble and were preparing to house people whose dwellings had been damaged or destroyed.
In the town of Finale Emilia, firefighters rescued a five-year-old girl who was trapped in the rubble of her house after a rapid series of phone calls between a local woman and emergency services.
"We were very afraid, all the village went out into the street after the first shock, after the second many took shelter in their cars, but fortunately the damage was fairly limited, above all affecting churches," Umberto Mazza, the mayor of Ostiglia, near Mantua, told the Italian news agency ANSA.

Heaps of Rubble

First television footage showed half-collapsed houses with heaps of rubble on the roads and serious damage to historic buildings and churches in the province of Modena.
One badly damaged building was the 14th century Estes Castle in the town of San Felipe Sul Pan, near the quake's epicentre.
There were fears that one of the towers of the famous mediaeval castle, the town's biggest attraction, could collapse. The town's main church was also severely damaged.
The quake also shook the major cities and towns of Bologna, Modena, Ferrara, Rovigo, Verona and Mantua, though none reported serious damage.
A series of strong aftershocks hit the area, the strongest measuring 5.1, and local mayors ordered residents to stay out of doors.
The quake was centred 35km north-northwest of Bologna at a relatively shallow depth of 10km, the US Geological Survey said.
The epicentre of the quake, the strongest to hit Italy in three years, was in the plains near Modena in the Emilia-Romagna region of the Po River Valley, and the tremor was felt in nearby regions of Lombardy and Veneto.
The last major earthquake to hit Italy was a 6.3-magnitude quake in the central Italian city of L'Aquila in 2009, killing nearly 300 people.
In January, a 5.3-magnitude quake in northern Italy was felt in Genoa, Bologna, Turin and Milan.

  • A magnitude-6.0 earthquake has rocked a swathe of northern Italy, causing considerable damage.
  • The quake struck in the early hours of the morning, about 35km (22 miles) north of the city of Bologna.
  • Many historic buildings across Emilia Romagna were destroyed, with the government describing the damage to the region's cultural heritage as "significant".
  • The tremor caused thousands of people to flee into the streets. In Finale Emilia, an old clock tower was left standing precariously...
  • ...but a new aftershock completely brought it crashing down later.
  • Among the dead were overnight workers at a ceramic factory that collapsed in Sant'Agostino, near Ferrara.
  • There are fears that a number of people may still be buried under the rubble.
  • More than 3,000 residents in Finale Emilia and other towns have been evacuated to shelters.
  • Police and emergency workers are on the scene, in a country used to earthquakes.
  • Terrified residents tried to salvage whatever they could.
  • Many later said they would be spending the night on the streets, fearing more tremors.
END

The Earthquakes around the world have increased a lot in the last year, later I will post an example of just how many & in which countries, have occurred in the past 7 days alone

Second Deadly Quake Hits Italy
Region among most productive

By: Alberto Arsie and Colleen Barry, 30 May 2012

SAN FELICE SUL PANARO, Italy -- Workers at the small machinery company had just returned for their first shift following Italy's powerful and deadly earthquake earlier this month when another one struck Tuesday morning, collapsing the roof.

At least three employees at the factory -- two immigrants and an Italian engineer checking the building's stability -- were among those killed in the second deadly quake in nine days to strike a region of Italy that hadn't considered itself particularly quake prone.

By late Tuesday, the death toll stood at 17, with several people still missing, including a worker at the machinery factory in the small town of San Felice Sul Panoro. Some 200 people also were injured in the 5.8-magnitude quake north of Bologna in Emilia Romagna, one of Italy's more productive regions, agriculturally and industrially.

Factories, barns and churches fell, dealing a second blow to a region where thousands remained homeless from the May 20 temblor, much stronger in intensity, at 6.0 magnitude.

The two quakes struck one of the most productive regions in Italy at a particularly crucial moment, as the country faces enormous pressure to grow its economy to stave off the continent's debt crisis. Italy's economic growth has been stagnant for at least a decade, and the national economy is forecast to contract by 1.2 per cent this year.

The area encompassing the cities of Modena, Mantua and Bologna is prized for its super-car production, churning out Ferraris, Maseratis and Lamborghinis; its world-famous Parmesan cheese and less well-known but critical to the economy: machinery companies.

Like the May 20 quake, many of the dead in Tuesday's temblor were workers inside huge warehouses, many of them prefabricated, that house factories. Inspectors have been determining which are safe to re-enter, but economic pressure has sped up renewed production -- perhaps prematurely.

Seven people were killed in the May 20 quake. In both, the dead were largely and disproportionately workers killed by collapsing factories and warehouses.

Co-workers of Mohamed Azeris, a Moroccan immigrant and father of two who died in the just-reopened factory, claim he was forced back to work as a shift supervisor or faced losing his job. A local union representative had demanded an investigation.

"Another earthquake -- unfortunately during the day -- that means people were inside working, so I think that an investigation will need to be opened here to check who cleared as safe these companies to understand who's responsible for this," Erminio Veronesi told The Associated Press.

At another factory closer to the epicentre in in the city of Medolla, rescue crews searched for three workers who did not turn up at roll call after the quake and were presumed dead.

Premier Mario Monti, tapped to steer the country from financial ruin in November, pledged the government would quickly provide help to the area "that is so special, so important and so productive for Italy."

The Coldiretti farm lobby said damage to the agricultural industry, including Parmesan makers whose aging wheels of cheese already suffered in the first quake, had risen to 500 million euros ($626 million) with the second hit. The Modena Chamber of Commerce estimated the first quake alone had cost businesses 1.5 million euros, with no fresh estimates immediately available.

Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini, all centred around Modena, reported no damage and said workers were evacuated and then allowed to go home to check on their homes and families. Lamborghini planned to keep production halted today.
