Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden dead: U.S. officials

WASHINGTON | Mon May 2, 2011 3:55am BST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Osama bin Laden is dead and his body has been recovered by U.S. authorities, U.S. officials said on Sunday night.

U.S. President Barack Obama was to make the announcement shortly that after searching in vain for bin Laden since he disappeared in Afghanistan in late 2001, the Saudi-born extremist is dead.
It is a major accomplishment for Obama and his national security team, having fulfilled the goal once voiced by Obama's predecessor, George W. Bush, to bring to justice the mastermind of the September 11, 2001, attacks.
End

There are many different conflicting reports on this.

The majority, outside the US, seem to be reporting that it was Pakistani Authorities that shot the man, that may be Bin Laden, at a luxurious house outside Islamabad and those authorities have the body awaiting identification.

One thing seems to be repeated in reports by media outside the US , is that it was Pakistani Intelligence that had been working on leads for a long time and traced him to the house near Islamabad.

It has not been confirmed if the post mortem has been completed and whether there is positive confirmation that it is actually Bin Laden.

Others say the death was caused by a Drone.

President Obama is shortly going to make a press announcement

Osama bin Laden is dead, President Barack Obama announced tonight.

In a nine-minute, late-night address from the White House, Obama said the suspected architect of the 9/11 terror attacks had been killed earlier Sunday by U.S. forces in Pakistan.

"His demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity," Obama said.

RECAP: White House Correspondents' Dinner

Bin Laden, who was 54, and the leader of the terror group Al-Qaeda, had been on the FBI's most-wanted list since the late 1990s.

"Justice has been done," said Obama.

Osama Bin Laden Dead: A Look At The Abbottabad Mansion Where The Al Qaeda Leader Was Killed (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

http://i.huffpost.com/gen/272724/thu...D-large570.jpg

Osama bin Laden was killed in his "mansion," according to the New York Times. Where did America's most wanted terrorist call home?

The compound was located in the city of Abbottabad, Pakistan, about two hours outside of Islamabad. According to the Times, while comfortable in some respects, the residents did take security seriously:

It was hardly the spartan cave in the mountains where many had envisioned Bin Laden to be hiding. Rather, it was a mansion on the outskirts of the town's center, set on an imposing hilltop and ringed by 12-foot-high concrete walls topped with barbed wire.

The property was valued at $1 million, but it had neither a telephone nor an Internet connection. Its residents were so concerned about security that they burned their trash rather putting it on the street for collection like their neighbors.

The Times reports that the mansion was constructed in 2005. As Ogle Earth reports, there is construction noticeable in 2005 on Google Earth shots of a site that fits with descriptions of the area in 2005:

This would seem to be the location of the compound.

Osama Bin Laden Dead: World Leaders Hail Al Qaeda Leader's Death But Fear Revenge

View world leaders' reactions to the death of Osama bin Laden below:

World leaders expressed relief over the killing of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, though their praise was tempered by fears of the international terrorist group's retaliation.

"Retribution inevitably reaches all terrorists," noted Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, before saying that Russia was "ready" to step up its cooperation with the U.S. in the fight against international terror networks. "Only a joint and united fight against global terrorism can achieve substantial results. Russia is ready to step up this type of cooperation," he said. French President Nicolas Sarkozy, British Prime Minister David Cameron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel echoed those sentiments. Meanwhile, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh condemned the killing. "We regard this as a continuation of the American policy based on oppression and the shedding of Muslim and Arab blood," he was quoted by Reuters as saying.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas

"Getting rid of bin Laden is good for the cause of peace worldwide but what counts is to overcome the discourse and the methods -- the violent methods -- that were created and encouraged by bin Laden and others in the world," Palestinian Authority (PA) spokesman Ghassan Khatib is Reuters quoted by Reuters as saying.

'We Should Not Lower Our Guard': World Leaders React to Osama bin Laden's Death

The news has broken and the statements are out. The world's political leaders have quickly reacted to the death of the world's most wanted man, Osama bin Laden. NewsFeed has collected their words so you can see how they've (mainly) welcomed the historic events.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai:
"We hope that the terrorists' activities will be stopped after Osama Bin Laden's death which was his punishment. The war against terrorism is not in the houses of innocent Afghan civilians. The fight against terrorism is not in bombing children and women in Afghanistan. The war against terrorism should be carried out in his safe haven, sanctuary and his training camp, not in Afghanistan, and today this has been proved right."

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard:
"We will continue our support for the counterterrorism efforts of the United States and our partners, and we will continue our efforts in Afghanistan to ensure that the country never again becomes a safe haven for terrorism."

British Prime Minister David Cameron:

"The news that Osama Bin Laden is dead will bring great relief to people across the world. Osama Bin Laden was responsible for the worst terrorist atrocities the world has seen - for 9/11 and for so many attacks, which have cost thousands of lives, many of them British. It is a great success that he has been found and will no longer be able to pursue his campaign of global terror."

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair:

"My heartfelt gratitude to President Obama and to all of those who so brilliantly undertook and executed this operation. We should never forget 9/11 was also the worst ever terrorist attack against U.K. civilians, and our thoughts are with all those - American, British and from nations across the world - who lost their lives and with their loved ones who remain and who live with their loss."

French President Nicolas Sarkozy:
"Osama Bin Laden was a promoter of the ideology of hatred and was the chief of a terrorist organization responsible for the deaths of thousands of victims, especially in Muslim countries."

German Chancellor Angela Merkel:
"Osama Bin Laden was responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent people. Terror was brought to many countries on his direct orders and in his name, against men, women and children, Christians and Muslims. Osama Bin Laden claimed to be acting in the name of Islam, but in reality he made a mockery of the basic values of his and all other religions."

Indian foreign ministry:
"The world must not let down its united effort to overcome terrorism and eliminate the safe havens and sanctuaries that have been provided to terrorists in our own neighbourhood. The struggle must continue unabated."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu:
"Israel joins in the joy of the American people on this historic day in which Osama bin Laden was killed ... This is a resounding victory for justice, freedom and for the joint values of all the countries that fight side by side determinedly against terror."

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi:
"This is a great result for the United States but also for all democracies. I think that we should not lower our guard because this could provoke reactions in the world of terrorism."

Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan:
"We welcome this significant progress in counter-terrorism measures, and I pay respect to the efforts by the officials concerned, including those in the United States and Pakistan."

Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki:
"The killing of Osama has taken place nearly 13 years after the terrorist bombings in Nairobi that led to the death of over 200 people, in an act believed to have been masterminded by Osama. His killing is an act of justice to those Kenyans who lost their lives and the many more who suffered injuries."

NATO:
"This is a significant success for the security of NATO allies and all the nations which have joined us in our efforts to combat the scourge of global terrorism to make the world a safer place for all of us. NATO made clear that it considered the September 11 attacks on the United States an attack against all allies. We remember the thousands of innocent lives lost to terrorist atrocities in so many of our nations, in Afghanistan, and around the world."

Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani:
"We will not allow our soil to be used against any other country for terrorism and therefore I think it's a great victory, it's a success and I congratulate the success of this operation."

Palestinian Authority spokesman Ghassan Khatib:
"Getting rid of Bin Laden is good for the cause of peace worldwide but what counts is to overcome the discourse and the methods - the violent methods - that were created and encouraged by Bin Laden and others in the world."

Russia:
"Russia was among the first countries to face the dangers inherent in global terrorism, and unfortunately knows what al-Qaeda is not from hearsay. Retribution will inevitably reach all terrorists."

Spain's ruling Socialist Party:
"The government considers the death of Osama Bin Laden ... to be a decisive step in the fight against international terrorism. The government reiterates its commitment to co-operating with the United States and other nations in the fight against terrorism wherever it is developed or carried out."

Turkish President Abdullah Gul:
"Terrorists and leaders of terrorists are captured alive or dead sooner or later. It should teach a lesson that the leader of the world's most dangerous and sophisticated terrorist organization is captured this way."

The Vatican spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi:
"Osama bin Laden, as we all know, had the very grave responsibility of spreading division and hatred amongst the people, causing the death of countless of people, and of instrumentalizing religion for this end.In front of the death of man, a Christian never rejoices but rather reflects on the grave responsibility of each one in front of God and men, and hopes and commits himself so that every moment not be an occasion for hatred to grow but for peace."

Yemeni government official:
"A truly historic moment ... We welcome the news ... millions of people will sleep in peace tonight.

Embassy of the Republic of Yemen:
"The government of the Republic of Yemen welcomes the elimination of Osama Bin Laden, the founding father of the al-Qaeda terrorist network. The successful operation, spearheaded by U.S. forces, marks a monumental milestone in the ongoing global war against terrorism."

The VEILED WARNING

Ismail Haniyeh, head of Hamas administration in Gaza Strip:

"We condemn the assassination and the killing of an Arab holy warrior. We regard this as a continuation of the American policy based on oppression and the shedding of Muslim and Arab blood."

May Day: Both Hitler and bin Laden Announced Dead on May 1

http://timenewsfeed.files.wordpress....r_03.jpg?w=455 Hulton / Getty

Despite the jubilation (mostly) worldwide over the death of Osama bin Laden, the biggest enemy so far this century, it's easy to forget the historic coincidence of the death of the biggest mass murderer of the previous century.

On May 1, 1945, Germany announced that Adolf Hitler was dead, leading to the end of the allied campaign in Europe during World War II. That same date 64 years later, President Obama announced the death of the al-Qaeda leader and international terrorist.

At about 10:30 that night a Hamburg Radio announcer broadcast that Hitler had "fallen at his command post in the Reich Chancery fighting to the last breath against Bolshevism and for Germany," according to the BBC's website. Around 11:30 on May 1, 2011, Obama interrupted nighttime television broadcasts to announce bin Laden had been killed in a military operation.

Hitler and his wife Eva Braun had actually committed suicide the evening before. A bodyguard who had escaped to British-occupied territory confirmed seeing their burned bodies to allies. Germany surrendered on May 7.

Official: Bin Laden Buried at Sea

After bin Laden was killed in a raid by U.S. forces in Pakistan, senior administration officials said the body would be handled according to Islamic practice and tradition. That practice calls for the body to be buried within 24 hours, the official said. Finding a country willing to accept the remains of the world's most wanted terrorist would have been difficult, the official said. So the U.S. decided to bury him at sea.
The official, who spoke Monday on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive national security matters, did not immediately say where that occurred.

Why Was Bin Laden Buried At Sea So Quickly?

http://timenewsfeed.files.wordpress....-027.jpg?w=455 Maher Attar/Sygma/Corbis

After spending many years hunting down the world's most wanted man, why did the U.S. bury Osama bin Laden at sea within 24 hours of killing him?
The reason is bound up within Islamic practice and tradition. And that practice calls for the body of the deceased to be buried within 24 hours, according to a U.S. official, who spoke Monday on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive national security matters.

"We are ensuring that it is handled in accordance with Islamic practice and tradition," confirmed the official. "This is something that we take very seriously. And so therefore this is being handled in an appropriate manner."
But the lingering question is why at sea? The official said that finding a country willing to accept the remains of the world's most wanted terrorist would have been difficult, so the decision was made to bury bin Laden at sea. Furthermore, one suspects that the U.S. would not have wanted there to be a physical grave site for fear of it turning into a place of worship for bin Laden's followers. There are rumors, however, that the U.S. asked Saudi Arabia to take the body (bin Laden was born in Saudi) but they allegedly refused.

It's also believed that DNA testing would have been carried out beforehand (though CNN is reporting that DNA matching is under way on samples from the slain terrorist leader) to verify that the body was that of bin Laden, as well as being proof against any conspiracy claims that could emanate to suggest that his death didn't take place. The exact location of the burial was not revealed.

It is reported on Aljazeera that Bin Laden was given a religious funeral ceremony on board the USS Cole before he was thrown into the sea.

Roots

Bin Laden was born in 1957, reportedly the 17th of the 57 children of Mohammed bin Laden, the owner of the largest construction company in Saudi Arabia. He was raised under conservative Wahhabi tenets, and, while enrolled at King Abdel Aziz University in Jidda, developed a belief in pan-Islamicism, a philosophy that stresses a united, Islamic world. This photo was taken in 1988.

Jihad

In the late 1970s, after Afghanistan was invaded by the Soviet Union, bin Laden traveled to the country to raise money for the Mujaheddin. Through his family connections he was able to deliver heavy equipment — used to build roads, tunnels and training camps — to the Mujahaddin. Exiled from his native country for criticizing the Saudi King — for allowing US troops to stay in the Kingdom — bin Laden remained in Afghanistan, where he created his own training camp and, with the help of his former college professor Abdullah Azzam, founded al-Qaeda, meaning "solid base", to offer religious training to the Mujaheddin. Ready to Die

It is estimated that bin Laden's camps trained between 3,000 and 5,000 guerillas prior to 2001. Here, fighters in an undated Al Qaeda video raise their weapons.

Study

Shortly after the embassy bombings bin Laden said, "If the instigation for jihad against the Jews and the Americans in order to liberate al-Aksa Mosque and the Holy Ka'aba is considered a crime, then let history be a witness that I am a criminal."

Dead or Alive

As a result of the events of September 11, 2001, bin Laden overnight became the most wanted criminal in the world. Within a month, American troops were on the ground in Afghanistan, committed to capturing him and his Taliban allies.

More Threats for Revenge

Aljazeera

President Obama;

"We must also reaffirm that United states is not and will never be at war against Islam. Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader, in fact, he slaughtered many Muslims," Obama said.

Four people, including a woman and one of bin Laden's sons, were also killed in the operation.

According to New York Times, bin Laden's body was taken to Afghanistan and later buried at sea.

Afghanistan - I do not believe this is Bin Laden's body

Hours after Obama made the announcement, a top al-Qaeda ideologue promised revenge for bin Laden's death. The commentator, going by the online name Assad al-Jihad2 posted on websites a long eulogy for the al-Qaeda leader and promised to "avenge the killing of the Sheik of Islam".
The Pakistani Taliban also threatened attacks against government leaders, including President Asif Ali Zardari, the Pakistan army and the United States.
"Now Pakistani rulers, President Zardari and the army will be our first targets. America will be our second target," Ehsanullah Ehsan, a spokesman for Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), or Taliban Movement of Pakistan, told Reuters by telephone from an undisclosed location.

Did you know that the news of Bin Laden's death was broken to the world ,,,,,,,, on Twitter. By a man that was in his home in Pakistan and heard the helicopter above and all the gun fire and went to watch the events. At first he didnt realise what was happening and who they were after, then later realised when he could hear all the shouting. So he went onto his computer to break the news.

The US found Bin Laden because of a tip from a detainee in Guantanamo, he informed them of who Osama's couriers were and especially his favourite. The US put a watch on this guy for a while, who eventually led them to that house. Osama had only been living there for 5 days, according to one Pakistani Official. He also objected to all the news reports saying Pakistan did not help the US, he said they had worked with them to find Bin Laden and knew about the raid and the subsequent death of the terrorist.

Some photos were shown on the Spanish speaking news channels here tonight. I have to say they were pretty awful. The pics were very gory and his face bloodied and looked as if he had been shot in the face, one eye was gone and it had a few blows to the face also.

I dont know if these are genuine, but its quite normal in the press here that they post explicate detailed photos of dead people, no matter how they died.

Some are saying they are false

Judge for yourself and post what you think.

They have been removed from some latino websites/blogs

A continuación se muestra cómo fue posible realizar un montaje de la foto del cadáver de Bin Laden y como la misma fue hecha hace 2 años atrás. Por lo tanto no queda duda de que la foto de Bin Laden muerto es falsa

False?...Maybe.

I want to believe it, but I´m not sure what evidence I would need to see that could convince me 100%.

Photos don't mean much these days as they can be altered easily as they are now digital.

I agree it looks like the original photo was doctored.

However lets not get confused here. The Bin Laden family were very respected and owned a huge contruction business in Saudi. They disowned Osama many years ago and when he started trying to oust the Saudi Royal Family, he then also lost his Saudi nationality and was banned from the country. Hence he became a nomad.

I dont know what went wrong with this guy, he used to be such a hard working kind nice man and was very popular.

I used to live and work in Saudi many years ago. When their father died in a plane crash many years before that, the eldest son Salem took over the family business. I met him in London with another brother, Thabet and travelled with friends and them to Germany.

Salem, changed his name to Simon (French pronunication) and he later died in a plane crash in Texas.

Thabet died in 2009, no reason was given.

Whatever or whomever changed Osama will probably never be known, but whatever it was, it was responsible for the terrible deaths and destruction he caused.
However he was not the operational head of Al Quaida, as many think,,,,,,, so the problems will continue for America and us all.

Just another JFK moment. The chances are we will never know how he was killed or where he was killed. When you have a government that classified 30 million documents in 2010, its going to be pretty difficult to find out the truth about anything. Welcome to facism, its going to be here for a while.
