Is This Where Nessie's Been Hiding All These Years? Fisherman Discovers 900-Foot-Deep Trench That Would Be Big Enough For The Legendary Monster and Her Whole Family

  • Keith Stewart, 43, found the crevice using state of the art sonar equipment
  • Loch Ness was previously mapped as being 813ft deep
  • Monster hunters says discovery could show where mythical beast is living
Daily Mail UK, 19 January 2016

A former fisherman has discovered a trench in the bottom of Loch Ness that makes it 900 feet deep, that would be big enough for the mythical monster to live in.

Tourist sightseeing boat skipper Keith Stewart, 43, found the crevice in the loch, around nine miles east of Inverness, using state of the art sonar equipment.

His discovery raises questions as to how deep the world-famous loch really is, and given hope to monster fans that Nessie could be lurking down there with her whole family.

Former fisherman Keith Stewart, 43, has discovered this trench in the bottom of Loch Ness, that makes the water 900ft deep and would be big enough for the mythical monster to live in

The most famous picture apparently of the Loch Ness Monster was taken in 1934 (above). However, it was later said to have been faked using a toy

Britain's deepest loch is Loch Morar, allegedly home to another elusive 'water kelpie' Morag at 1017 feet, while Loch Ness, the second largest, was measured at 813 feet deep.

Mr Stewart's sonar mapping of the trench however revealed that it could be 889 feet deep.

Mr Stewart's colleagues at Jacobite Cruises, which operates sight seeing tours down Loch Ness from Inverness, have christened the trench 'Keith's Abyss', and he says it has whetted his appetite to look for more mysteries the huge water expanse may harbour.

'I wasn't really a believer of the monster beforehand,' he said. 'But two weeks ago, I got a sonar image of what looked like a long object with a hump lying at the bottom. It wasn't there when I scanned the loch bed later.

Mr Stewart on board his boat. His colleagues at Jacobite Cruises, which operates sight seeing tours down Loch Ness from Inverness, have christened the trench 'Keith's Abyss'

'That intrigued me and then I found this dark shape about half way between the Clansman Hotel and Drumnadrochit which transpired to be a crevice or trench. I measured it with our state of the art 3d equipment at 889 feet, which is 77 feet deeper than the previous recorded deepest point called Edwards' Deep.

'I don't yet know how long it is. But I have gone back several times over the abyss and I have verified my measurements. It gets deeper from 825 feet to the recorded depth.'

Mr Stewart says he found the crevice just a few hundred yards offshore whereas previous sonar searches have concentrated on the middle of the loch.

Mr Stewart (pictured) says he found the crevice just a few hundred yards offshore whereas previous sonar searches have concentrated on the middle of the loch

'Searches of the monster have also been in those areas as well as Urquhart Bay so maybe the local legends of underwater caves connecting Loch Ness to other lochs and perhaps even the waters of the east and west coast are true,' he said.

'Obviously it will need more research. But it is an intriguing prospect. It is possible that an underwater earthquake has opened this up in recent times because the Great Glen lies in a well known fault in the earth's crust and tremors have been felt along it.'

Mr Stewart had previously used sonar equipment to map the depths of the world's seas, but started working at Loch Ness in March.

'I quit the open sea having been round the world and back using sonar equipment for years and decided to look for something more sedate,' he said. 'Being captain of the Jacobite vessel was something different and appealed to me.
'I started the job in March but now this discovery has made my job even more interesting.'

Gary Campbell, president of Loch Ness Monster Fan Club and Registrar of Sightings said Mr Stewart's discovery could provide clues as to the whereabouts of the Loch's monster.

'This just adds another dimension,' he said. 'We thought the loch was 810 feet deep and just had a 20 foot diameter hole at the bottom. Now we've discovered a whole trench that makes the loch nearly 900 feet deep which is twice the depth of the North Sea.

'There could be more trenches which make it deeper. This looks like where Nessie and her whole family could really hide out and explain why they are rarely seen.

'Remember, Loch Ness is part of a huge earthquake fault line that runs from Canada to Norway, where similar sightings have been seen.

In 2013, there was a 2.4 magnitude quake in the loch - this was when Nessie disappeared for a whole year for the first time since 1925. It could be that this massive tremor opened up the trench giving the monster a new hiding place

'This now needs real research. No-one has done any real at the Loch for over 10 years. Lets get a submarine down to properly investigate the new monster trench.

'This summer we hope someone will come to the loch with the best detection sonar in the world down to the depths just to see what is really at the bottom of the loch.'

A DISTURBING BEAST, OR JUST A CATFISH? FAMOUS NESSIE SIGHTINGS

The legend of the Loch Ness Monster has been around since the sixth century, when Irish monk Saint Columba witnessed locals burying a man who had been attacked by a 'water beast.'

Sightings were scarce until the first modern newspaper report of a monster in the Northern Chronicle of in 1930 which told of fishermen in a boat on Loch Ness being 'disturbed' by a 18 feet long creature.

But it was a sighting in 1933, when George Spicer and his wife claimed they saw 'a most extraordinary form of animal' which was 4ft high and 25ft long crossing the road near the loch, that started Nessie mania.

In 2001 semi-retired photographer James Gray and friend Peter Levings took this while they were out fishing

This picture, said to show the loch's famous monster, was taken by Hugh Gray in 1933

Among the most famous claimed sightings is a photograph taken in 1934 by Colonel Robert Kenneth Wilson. However, it was later exposed as a hoax by one of the participants, Chris Spurling, who, on his deathbed, revealed that the pictures were staged.

And in 1935, renowned big game hunter Marmaduke Wetherell found a footprint he said was the monster's.
It was later revealed to have been made by him using a dried hippo's foot of the type used as umbrella stands at the time.

In December last year, it was revealed that sightings of the Monster are at their highest in more than a decade, with five people claiming to have spotted the creature in the last year.

But in July 2015, a famous 'monster' hunter Steve Feltham, who spent 24 years watching the Loch, made global headlines, by declaring that the creature - or creatures - in the loch was probably a Wels Catfish, native to waters near the Baltic and Caspian seas in Europe.

The Loch Ness Monster tourism industry is believed to be worth around £25million-a-year to the local area.

Oh Crap! Loch Ness Video Shows 30ft Humped Creature Lurking in The Water

Ireland’s Loch Ness Monster Surfaces From The Depths After 144 Years

Irish Central 18 October 2016

The mystery of the sea serpent of County Clare has never been solved.
A clipping from a September, 1871 edition of The Day's Doings. Mary Evans Picture Library

The sea serpent, often referred to as Ireland’s Loch Ness monster, was sighted numerous times in the late 1850s off the coast of Ireland along County Clare.

The mystery of its nature has never been solved and is up for debate again now that an illustrated newspaper sketch of the creature has been found in the archives of the Mary Evans Picture Library in London, after the library set about digitizing its Victorian illustrated newspaper collection.

One of the earliest sightings of the monster was recorded in 1850, when it was described as “sunning itself near the Clare coast off Kilkee.”

Then, in September 1871, the Limerick Chronicle ran an article about a “large and frightening sea monster” encountered by a group of people, all of whom “had their nerves considerably upset by the dreadful appearance of this extraordinary creature.”

The story made its way to London, and then the following month an even more elaborate account was reported by an illustrated newspaper – The Day’s Doings.
The artist’s rendering, pictured above, was paired with a dramatic account of the sighting.

The paper described the day’s events, a “group staying at Kilkee, composed of several ladies and some gentlemen – one of whom is a well-known clergyman in the north of Ireland” had been out walking, at a place known as the Diamond Rocks.

“All of a sudden, their attention was arrested by the appearance of an extraordinary monster, who rose from the surface of the water about seventy yards from the place where they were standing.

“It had an enormous head, shaped somewhat like a horse, while behind the head and on the neck was a huge mane of seaweed-looking water; the eyes were large and glaring, and, by the appearance of the water behind, a vast body seemed to be beneath the waves.”

An arresting sight indeed!

Ireland had its very own sea serpent and the mystery of County Clare was recently, once again, in the limelight after almost 150 years.

The sea serpent often referred to as Ireland’s Loch Ness monster was sighted numerous times in the late 1850s off the coast of Ireland along County Clare.

The mystery of its nature has never been solved and it was up for debate again in 2015 when an illustrated newspaper sketch of the creature was found in the archives of the Mary Evans Picture Library in London, after the library set about digitizing its Victorian illustrated newspaper collection.

One of the earliest sightings of the monster was recorded in 1850, the Irish Times reports. It was described as “sunning itself near the Clare coast off Kilkee.”

Then, in September 1871, the Limerick Chronicle ran an article about a “large and frightening sea monster” encountered by a group of people, all of whom “had their nerves considerably upset by the dreadful appearance of this extraordinary creature.”

Travel Channel Announces ‘Loch Ness Monster: New Evidence’ Premiere Date

JOIN THE THRILL RIDE TO THE DEPTHS OF THE WORLD’S GREATEST MYSTERY IN THE TWO-HOUR GLOBAL PREMIERE OF “LOCH NESS MONSTER: NEW EVIDENCE”.

PREMIERING SUNDAY, 15 SEPTEMBER AT 8 P.M. ET/PT ON TRAVEL CHANNEL IN THE US AND SEPTEMBER 15 AT 7 P.M. ON DISCOVERY CHANNEL IN THE UK

6 Sep 2019.

LOCH NESS, SCOTLAND/NEW YORK (September 5, 2019) – Tales of a monster lurking beneath the waves of Loch Ness have terrified people in the Scottish Highlands for centuries. Now, Dr. Neil Gemmell of the University of Otago in New Zealand, uses a cutting-edge scientific technique called environmental DNA (eDNA) to unravel this centuries-old mystery.

Travel Channel has the exclusive first look at Gemmell’s high-tech monster hunt, as he carries out experiments, talks to eyewitnesses and investigates the incredible history of the Loch Ness monster.

The global premiere of the two-hour special, “Loch Ness Monster: New Evidence,” premieres in the United States on Travel Channel on Sunday, September 15 at 8 p.m. ET/PT and in the United Kingdom on Discovery Channel on Sunday, September 15 at 7 p.m.

Gemmell and his team collected water samples from all over the loch, which were filtered for DNA fragments. If there’s monster DNA in the loch, Gemmell will find it. He’ll put the leading theories to the ultimate scientific test. Is Nessie a giant sturgeon or catfish as many contend?

Could it be a new, undiscovered species of large eel? Is it a lost relic of the dinosaur era that captured the world’s imagination in the infamous, black and white “Surgeon’s Photo,” taken in 1934? Gemmell’s stunning evidence is sure to launch a new chapter in the search for the Loch Ness monster. On 5 September, 2019, Dr. Gemmell and his team announce the results of their astonishing study.

“Our cameras have been behind the scenes capturing all of the drama and finally revealing that several leading theories can be scientifically dismissed. Now, the most thorough eDNA study of the loch in history will have its day in the spotlight,” said Matthew Butler, general manager, Travel Channel.

The scientific community has long been fascinated with the secrets of Loch Ness: from photographic studies in the 1930s to the formation of the Loch Ness Investigation Bureau.

Throughout most of the 1960s, the bureau had over 1000 active members surveilling the loch around the clock in search of the monster. In the 1970s, the search incorporated the widespread use of submersibles and submarines and then advanced to sonar searches in the 1980s. Each expedition utilized the best technology of that time to find evidence of the monster.

The special spotlights the multiple expeditions of naturalist Adrian Shine. Shine first captured the public imagination with his 1973 expedition using a homemade submersible to explore the depths of Loch Ness in hopes of finding evidence of the monster. Spectacular archival footage of this expedition survives to this day.

In 1987, Shine conducted an even more ambitious expedition – Operation Deepscan – a complete sonar mapping of Loch Ness. Something mysterious was detected at a depth of nearly 600 feet … though no one could say precisely what it was.

Throughout the special, Dr. Shine provides historical context for Nessie research throughout the years and also joins Dr. Gemmell to collect samples in this new eDNA undertaking.

The documentary explores over-the-top hoaxes that fooled the world and for the first time, casts doubt on the claim that the world-famous Surgeon’s Photo was a hoax.

There is new, compelling information, presented by world-famous cryptozoologist Loren Coleman, suggesting the claim the Surgeon’s Photo is a hoax was itself a complete con – and an act of revenge contrived by the family of a dishonored Nessie Hunter.

The film also presents new video evidence provided by eyewitnesses who spotted something inexplicable in the water. The one-of-a-kind location is the ideal backdrop to look back on the science of what has been discovered over time and the incredible cast of local characters who will go to the grave claiming they’ve seen a great beast.

Professor Gemmell made it clear from the start that the monster myth was always, “the bait on a very large science hook.”

“Perhaps the most lasting legacy of this adventure will be that millions of people now know about the power of eDNA to understand, monitor and protect our environment.” Gemmell adds he hopes his recent foray to Loch Ness may inspire others to explore the world in this new way.

Loch Ness Monster Debate Sparked After Mystery Creature Photographed by Tourist

Steve Challice, from Southampton UK, took the picture of what he describes as a "big fish" while on holiday in Scotland - but when he posted it online people began commenting that it could be Nessie

Daily Mirror UK, 26 JUN 2020

A "photograph" of a mystery creature taken by a tourist has sparked a debate over whether it's the Loch Ness Monster.

Steve Challice, from Southampton, claims he took the picture of what he describes as a "big fish" while on holiday in Scotland.

He estimated that it was 30 feet away.

After sharing the image of the large creature emerging from the water online, people began commenting that it might be Nessie while others speculated whether the picture was real.

But even Steve is sceptical, the Daily Record reports.

He says he believes it to be something more mundane like a big fish or a seal.

"Personally I know there has been some interest and some people are saying it's the monster but I don't believe that," he admitted.

Steve was on holiday with his brother in September when they decided to visit Urquhart Castle on the banks of the famous loch.

Spotting the chance to get away from the majority of the other tourists who had just arrived in a couple of coaches, Steve explained that he was initially photographing the opposite shore when he saw a "sort of ripple in the water".

He said: "I started taking a couple of shots and then this big fish came to the surface and then went back down again.

"It only appeared in one shot and to be honest that was something of a fluke. I watched for a while as you can see from the last picture but didn't see it again."

He said it was only during lockdown that he has had time to look through the photos he had taken from his two week trip, stating that he had "hundreds" to go through as he's a keen photographer.

Steve added he initially thought it was a catfish and only posted it online so people could try and identify it for him.

Author Roland Watson, who runs the Loch Ness Mystery blog, has been in discussion with Steve since finding the pictures on Facebook.

The writer and Loch Ness monster expert is dubious about the authenticity of the photos, he said: "Up until now this year we only had distant webcam blobs due to the lockdown at Loch Ness, then this image turned up.

"If this is a genuine picture of a creature in Loch Ness, it would easily rank in the top three of all time.

"At this point, I am in an ongoing conversation with Steve as to the objections and concerns I have about this being a photoshop picture. So we will see where that takes us."

A digital photography expert has also cast doubts on the picture, stating that it is likely photoshop may have been used due to the colour saturation and indistinct lining of the supposed animal in the main picture.

Steve has defended the images though stating that they are genuine.

He said: "There are pics on Google showing large monsters with lots of loops like a snake or something and my image is nothing like that.

"I genuinely think, to this day, it's just a big fish."

Robert Kenneth Wilson, a London physician, captured arguably the most famous image of the Loch Ness Monster, the surgeon’s photograph was published in the Daily Mail on April 21, 1934

Loch Ness Monster Caught on Camera as Officials Report Flurry of New Sightings

Karen Scott snapped a few photos of a mysterious beast swimming in Loch Ness while visiting from Aberdeen with her partner

Daily Mirror UK, 26 DEC 2020.

The mysterious presence above the water was the size of a large seal, Karen estimated (Image: Credit: Pen News/Karen Scott)

"I was just looking over the loch from the castle when I spotted something in the water.

"I initially thought it was a bird sitting on the water but my partner said it definitely wasn't.

"By the time I got my phone camera on it had slowly dipped under the water and then appeared again a short distance further away.

"That's when I took the photos. It then did the same thing again a couple of more times until it was much further away."

Karen's partner estimated that the creature was the size of a very large seal.

"But when we spoke to the guides at the castle they said it was very rare for a seal to be this far up Loch Ness so I don't know what it was," she added.

"I was quite excited, especially when I went onto the sightings website and found that there were similar pictures to mine."

Gary Campbell, who keeps the Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register, said that 2020 had been an unexpectedly strong year for fresh Nessie reports.

He said: "As with everyone else across the planet, 2020 has been a very different year at Loch Ness.

"The primary tourist attraction, Urquhart Castle, would normally welcome in excess of 500,000 visitors but, as you would imagine, numbers have been severely curtailed by the Covid crisis.

"However, there have still been a significant number of Nessie sightings throughout 2020."

Urquhart Castle at Loch Ness hasn't had as many visitors this year (Image: Credit: Pen News/Tyler Brenot)

Mr Campbell added that some sightings had been made by visitors using a live camera online.

He said: "We are lucky that many folk can join in the hunt from around the world via the Loch Ness Webcam and a number of the sightings have been reported via that medium.

"Nessie has, however, been seen in person throughout 2020 by some of the few visitors like Karen that made it to the loch and has also been spotted by local residents who live nearby.

One of the most famous photos of the 'Loch Ness Monster' (Image: Getty Images)

"It's great to see that, notwithstanding a global crisis, Nessie still pops up from time to time, allowing us to be sure that when more people come back to visit, she'll still be there to welcome them."

Miss Scott is unsure quite what she saw on November 24, but says if it was a seal, it certainly didn't move like one.

She said: "It didn't dive under the water but slowly went down under.

"It didn't bob about like a seal would do."

And she believes that, in any case, the Loch Ness Monster is out there somewhere.

"I do believe it exists but I'm not sure it's the same 'monster' from years ago," she said.

"Still, there is definitely something there that can't easily be explained."

'Inexplicable' Loch Ness Video Shows 30ft Humped Creature Lurking in The Water

A husband and wife captured the incredible moment the mysterious creature surfaced the water at Loch Ness in Scotland with something swimming and turning below

BBC News 3 MAY 2022.

Witnesses have claimed the creature was between 20 and 30ft long

A video has emerged which appears to show a 30ft creature moving through the water at Loch Ness, reigniting monster rumours.

The two-and-a-half minute clip seems to show humps emerge above the surface of the water with something swimming and turning below.

Experts have described it as the most compelling footage from the past two decades years spent looking for the Loch Ness Monster.

Gary Campbell, who celebrated 25 years of recording Nessie sightings, acknowledged the footage and said it was the best he has seen in 22 years.

"In terms of video evidence, there’s been two or three really good videos in the past but this is certainly up there with the best of them," he told Mail Online.

"When something like this comes along which is genuinely inexplicable then it is great."

A couple in their 50s filmed the apparent sighting while on holiday in the Scottish Highlands and hope it will be analysed in efforts to help solve rumours about the monster.

The clip shows a mysterious creature swimming just below the surface of the water around 150 yards from the shore, with a strong wake of water behind it.

"I really don’t know what it was in the water. It was something large... It was propelling itself with something. It wasn’t how a fish would do it," the woman said.

She captured the eerie moment on the loch after waking up early on Monday and heading out with her camera as the water was so still, when she spotted a large creature moving.

"What on Earth is that?" she is heard saying as she captures the moment on her iPhone.

Pictures were also taken from the couple's holiday cottage less than half a mile from the loch and opposite Urquhart Castle.

The husband and wife claim the creature was between 20 and 30ft long and had at least one fin or limb which moved "like an oar" beneath the surface.

They described seeing something weird under the water which "rushed forward and turned around."

A local expert in video and photography said what the couple had captured was "clearly animate" and came out of the water before going back in, and was "definitely larger than a bird."

Another possible sighting of the Loch Ness Monster pictured in 2002

It is one of four sightings so far this year which have been approved on the Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register which is run by Mr Campbell.

The first was logged on March 30 when documentary maker Jamie Huntley visited the loch at around 11.15am with his colleague Warren Speed.

Mr Huntley, from Tyne and Wear, told how they were driving past Boleskine Cemetery when he saw a "large object or creature" in the loch which he mistook for a big boulder.

He recalled saying "what's that it's huge" after seeing movement in the water and said the beast's skin was wet and comparable to whale skin.

Five days later, another sighting was reported by Tom Ingram onboard the Spirit Of Loch Ness cruise.

Mr Ingram, who was visiting from Portsmouth, took a picture of a large mass in the water after contact was made on the boat's sonar near Invermoriston at around 1.30pm.

On April 15, a third sighting occurred near Aldourie Castle at around 9.30am

Some witnesses have likened the creature to a whale while others have compared it to a large serpent

Local Glenn Blevins was working on the banks of the loch when he saw "a large animate object in the water."

He told the register: "It was dark in colour and stayed there for around 20 seconds before sinking into the water.

"It was difficult to estimate the size but it was definitely larger than a seal and given the angle, there may have been two, one behind the other.”

Loch Ness Monster Spotted in 2023 With Wave That's Too big For a Fish

Spooky footage has shown “the first Nessie sighting of 2023” after something "too big" to be a fish was spotted in the murky depths of Loch Ness.

BBC 1 MAR 2023

Under the gently lapping freshwater waves of Loch Ness is one of Scotland's most famous fairytales and the hunt for Nessie is decades old.

Veteran Nessie hunter Eoin O’Faodhagain "couldn't believe" what he saw when he was monitoring a webcam video of the loch from his home.

Two clips from the lake captured something stirring in the mysterious depths close to Shoreland Lodges, near Fort Augustus on the loch’s southern shore.

Eoin, 58, said: "My reaction was I couldn't believe what I was viewing, and it all happened so fast

"In the first video clip, something moves on the surface for a couple of seconds then you see two shadowy wakes moving in two lines under the surface.

“It probably moves left like this for about 15 feet then it is gone."

Eoin, from County Donegal in Northern Ireland, believed the water was "too agitated" for the disturbance to have been caused by a fish.

He continued: "The second unusual occurrence happened slightly further out in the loch – you see a large white round disturbance on the surface.

"You would think it is just a fish jumping, but it is not like that at all. It is too big and the water is too agitated."

He added: "You may not see a body, but there’s definite movement in the water that cannot be explained by natural occurrences."

Eoin estimated the wake was six to eight feet long.

“But nobody will ever know what the true size is hidden under the water, to cause such a wake in the first place,” he said.

“Something is causing these wakes, that we are not seeing.

Eoin O’Faodhagain
Eoin said he hadn't seen anything for months until this footage emerged

Meet The Monster Hunters Convinced Nessie is Lurking in The Loch

Hundreds Join Search For The Loch Ness Monster.... Most Exciting Photos EVER

The quest to find Nessie at Loch Ness brings in an estimated £41 million annually

BBC 1 SEP 2023

The monster hunting mob has become quite hi-tech, employing cameras, microphones, night-vision goggles and more

How do you find the world’s most famous beastie these days? No really, it’s a serious question. Do you look for a periscope-kinked neck poking out of the water? Or dark humps that roll like a slinky before fading to black?

Last weekend, a chat with obsessive Loch Ness Monster hunter Alan McKenna revealed he uses a high-tech acoustic hydrophone to identify strange underwater calls and bubbling water. Bubbling water? He pointed to his submersible. “There’s a large creature down there,” he said, patrolling the bank like a ringmaster. “We just have to prove it.”

We were standing on the harbour overlooking Urquhart Bay near Drumnadrochit in melancholy rain. Out on Loch Ness, the dark gloom had bathed the swollen surface in a wash of thunder grey and the sinking clouds only gave away a smudge of hills.

The water clawed at the loch’s edge and any onlookers who’d arrived on the off-chance would have seen a mob of boat skippers and volunteers armed with cameras, microphones, night-vision goggles and thermal and infrared drones, then quickly realised they’d stumbled upon the biggest monster hunt for 50 years.

Don’t judge, but I took my place among them and joined the pursuit.
