Daily Mail UK, 20 July 2014

All eyes will be on The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's son Prince George next Tuesday, 22nd July, as the future king celebrates his first birthday.
To commemorate the date, this beautiful set of pictures has been released, depicting Royal babies over the past 87 years.

The oldest photograph from the set dates all the way back to 27th June 1927, and portrays the Duke and Duchess of York with King George V and Queen Mary and the then Princess Elizabeth, now Queen Elizabeth II, on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

Birthday Cake re: Historical Royal Pics + Prince George's 1st Birthday

A Guest List Fit for a Prince!
The Queen joins Harry, Zara and Kate at Kensington Palace
-(and Granny Middleton is there too)

Daily Mail UK, 22 July 2014

  • The Queen was among the guests at Kensington Palace for Prince George's first birthday party
  • She was joined by Prince Harry, Zara and Mike Tindall, the Middleton clan and Kate's childhood friend Emilia d'Erlanger
  • The latter joined the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince George on a trip to Buckingham Palace this morning
  • George's first birthday party has been organised by Carole Middleton and has a Peter Rabbit theme
  • During the party, guests will tuck into a special cake made by George's Spanish nanny, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo
  • Grandparents Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall were notable absentees but did get George a present

The cake was iced, the sandwiches made and the balloons blown up and hanging from the ceiling. All that was needed was the guests and with Prince George the birthday boy, they were never going to be ordinary.

The most important guest was his great-grandmother, the Queen, who could be seen perched in the back seat of her car as she was driven through the gates of Kensington Palace in London, and spent 50 minutes with her great-grandson.

Looking summery in a floral patterned dress and her trademark pearls with bright red lipsick, the Queen looked delighted to be attending - and even got her car to slow down as it drove past the cheering crowds that lined the route to the palace.

Earlier in the day Kate, accompanied by her nanny, Maria Borallo, and a police protection officer, drove George to Buckingham Palace so the little prince could see his great-grandfather, Prince Philip, who was unable to attend the party due to work commitments.
Arriving at around 11am, they spent an hour at the Queen’s official residence and as they were inside the band of the Irish Guards played a tuneful rendition of Happy Birthday in honour of George’s big day.
The little prince’s doting grandfather Prince Charles, who also missed Prince William’s first birthday as he and his then wife, Princess Diana, were on tour in Canada, was also away, this time in Scotland on official duties.
But he looked delighted after being given a large cuddly toy red squirrel to take home to his grandson as he visited a Perthshire estate.
The first guests to arrive were Kate’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, who drove in through the palace gates shortly after 3pm in matching Range Rovers.

Doting: The Queen might have been left with a nanny on her first birthday but she made sure she saw her great-grandson not once but twice on his big day

Favourite cousin: The Middletons were followed by Zara Phillips, reportedly William and Harry's favourite cousin, who arrived with her husband Mike and daughter Mia

Family: Zara was driven through the gates of Kensington Palace by her husband Mike Tindall and represented a rare day off from her stellar eventing career

Party time: As well as his uncle Prince Harry, George's first birthday guest list also included his maternal uncle, James Middleton, who arrived wearing a pair of Ray Bans

It's Aunty Pippa! Pippa Middleton, herself a fan of a themed birthday bash, also arrived at Kensington Palace for Prince George's first birthday party

Despite being thought to have organised the party, there was no hint as to whether Carole had brought along a few bits and bobs from Party Pieces, her online partyware store, to make the afternoon go with a swing.
Shortly afterwards another of the godparents, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, arrived on foot clutching a large rectangular-shaped present, wrapped in brightly coloured paper.

Jamie LP, as he is known in royal circles, is one of William’s most trusted and long-serving aides. Although he recently retired from his role as Principal Private Secretary to William, Kate and Harry, the former army officer was immediately re-appointed as William’s ‘Extra Equerry’, so trusted is his counsel.
Other godparents to arrive included Emilia d’Erlanger, one of Kate’s closest friends from her days at Marlborough College, and William van Cutsem, a childhood friend of the prince.
Julia Samuel, a confidante of William’s late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, and another of George’s god-parents, was also driven in by car.

The brains of the operation: Carole Middleton, wearing a typically elegant polka dot tea dress, drives into the palace for the party she organised

Grandpa's here: Michael Middleton arrived in a separate car from his wife. Prince George spent his first few months at the Middleton home in Bucklebury

Heads turned as Kate’s heavily-bearded brother, James Middleton, zipped in driving a £60,000 convertible F-type Jaguar, while Aunty Pippa was dropped off in a black taxi.

The Queen’s grand-daughter and William’s cousin, Zara Philips, fresh from competing in an equestrian event on the continent, was among the last to arrive and drove in with her husband, Mike Tindall.
Godmother Zara laughed and smiled at the waiting crowds as they roared past. Although she could not be seen, it is believed the couple’s own baby daughter, Mia, was in the back of their car.

According to palace sources, Uncle Prince Harry – sure to be the life and soul of even a children’s tea party – strolled over from his cottage in the palace grounds to join in the fun.

Birthday visit: The Duchess of Cambridge was photographed driving Prince George to Buckingham Palace to visit the Queen this morning

Birthday: Prince George has spent his first birthday with his parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and his great-grandmother, the Queen

Well-wishers left flags and balloons at the gates to Kensington Palace. Inside Prince George, his parents,
aunt and uncles were celebrating along with his Middleton grandparents and his great-grandmother, the Queen.

In one of two new photographs issued, Prince George can be seen pointing and gazing intently at the delicate creature which has landed on his father's hand

Present for George: Although George's grandparents Prince Charles and the
Duchess of Cornwall were in Scotland, Charles did pick up a toy squirrel for his grandson

Update re: Historical Royal Pics + Prince George's 1st Birthday

The Little Girl the Queen Chose to be her Best Friend:
How 'Lilibet' Found a Lifelong Kindred Spirit During a Chance Garden Encounter

DailyMail, Saturday, Jul 26th 2014

Eight-year-old Princess Elizabeth dedicated an unfinished novel to her 'dear little friend' Sonia. But who was Sonia, and how did they meet? It all began in 1930 when, aged just four, Princess Elizabeth of York bumped into Sonia Graham-Hodgson while out playing in Hamilton Gardens, behind the Yorks' London home. The meeting was significant because, as Elizabeth's governess Marion Crawford recorded, 'Sonia was the one friend whom the Queen chose for herself.'

After playing for an hour in Hamilton Gardens, they left to have their tea and the princess said, 'Goodbye. See you tomorrow.'

They would go on to see each other nearly every day after that, apart from family holidays, until Elizabeth moved to Buckingham Palace seven years later.

Looking back, Sonia recalled the princess as 'a thoughtful and sensitive child, and naturally well-behaved. She never seemed aware of her position and paid no attention to the people who stood by the railings to watch her play.'

'The Duke of York relished a game of Sardines'

The girls were usually accompanied by their nannies, and occasionally left the seclusion of their private garden to play in the other London parks.

A charming press photo of the time shows the girls walking hand in hand through Hyde Park, with Sonia a good five or six inches taller than the princess despite being only eight months her senior.

The two learned to skip, played hopscotch, and took dancing lessons together. 'I suppose I was the bossy one,' Sonia admitted in 2006.

'I think it was usually me who decided what games we should play.' Sometimes Elizabeth's father joined in, particularly relishing the hide-and- seek game of Sardines. 'I remember my starchy nanny saying she found it very undignified having to hide in a bush with him.'

At first Sonia had no idea her friend was a princess, although it was soon made clear. 'I had to curtsey to the Duke and Duchess of York and to Queen Mary,' though she was allowed to call Elizabeth by her pet name of Lilibet.

The Queen's handwritten novel that she dedicated to Sonia

This changed in 1936 when, with the abdication of Edward VIII, Elizabeth's parents became king and queen and Sonia's ten-year-old friend became Heiress Presumptive.

'And so things became more formal,' Sonia remembered. 'We called her Princess and curtsied to her. She grew up a lot and became, well, more serious.'

The Royal Family moved out of their home at 145 Piccadilly and into first floor apartments at Buckingham Palace. Elizabeth's 30 toy horses went with her, apart from a favourite one called Ben, which she was concerned 'would not like being packed away in a removal van and put in storage. So she asked me to look after him,' recalled Sonia.

A couple of weeks later Elizabeth wrote and asked Sonia to come round to the palace and to bring Ben with her.

During the war Elizabeth was sent firstly to Balmoral and then to Windsor and the two girls didn't see each other for the duration.

In October 1940, at the height of the Blitz, 145 Piccadilly - which was unoccupied at the time - suffered a direct hit, destroying most of the house's back and interior. The elegant façade remained intact until the 1960s when it was pulled down to make way for a road-widening project around Hyde Park Corner and the construction of the Intercontinental Hotel between 1968 and 1975.

Today the hotel's Wellington Lounge occupies the former site of No 145 and honours its former occupants by offering traditional afternoon teas 'for an experience fit for Royalty'.

The friends were reunited when Elizabeth took her fiancé, Lt Philip Mountbatten, with her to Sonia's 21st birthday.

'He was very good-looking and I could tell the Queen was very fond of him,' Sonia remembered. 'I was there at their wedding in Westminster Abbey and had a marvellous seat up near the front. It was all terribly impressive; and the Queen looked so happy.'

The two friends continued to meet from time to time at Sonia's house for tea or dinner parties even after Elizabeth became Queen in 1952.

The girls riding their tricycles in the park in 1953 accompanied by their nannies

'She used to say how nice it was to get out of Buckingham Palace,' and 'once she had arrived here, she was completely at ease.'

In October 1953 Sonia married Anthony Berry, who had proposed to her outside the palace on Coronation Day. With the newly crowned Elizabeth's permission, the ceremony took place at the Queen's Chapel, St James's Palace, and the Dean of Windsor officiated.

Berry was a director of the prestigious London wine firm, Berry Bros & Rudd, based at 3 St James's Street, which has supplied the British Royal Family since the reign of George III.

He and Sonia had two children, a daughter Victoria and a son Simon. The latter is now chairman of the family firm and in 2007, to the delight of his parents, became Clerk of the Royal Cellars, responsible for drawing up the royal wine list and selecting wines and spirits for the Queen's cellar at Buckingham Palace and other official residences.

The Berrys retired to a spacious apartment in a Georgian crescent in Bath, where signed photos of the young Elizabeth were a reminder of her special royal friendship.

'She used to say how nice it was to get out of Buckingham Palace, once she had arrived at my house, she was completely at ease'

Sonia was occasionally invited to royal parties and in March 2004 was at the Ritz Hotel when the Queen hosted a gathering for friends and family. The two also exchanged letters and cards and in 2006 Sonia sent the Queen an 80th birthday greeting and a silk scarf as a present.

In a rare public comment that year she paid tribute to her friend and monarch. 'She has taken the job tremendously seriously and made a great success of it. The Queen was determined that she would work hard; not just enjoy the privileges.

'She has wonderful dedication. She is absolutely steadfast and sets an example to other people. Perhaps at one point she was a little too remote - out of shyness - but that has changed too. I feel terribly privileged to have been her friend for so long. I am very lucky.'

Sonia Berry died peacefully at home on 16 March, 2012, at the age of 86, two years after the death of her husband.

They left their two children, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She also left many memories for the Queen of a special relationship that began on a summer's day over eight decades earlier when a four-year-old princess, isolated in that rarefied world of pre-war royalty, just needed someone to play with.
