Google killing support for Internet Explorer 8 in November

Google has announced this weekend that it will be officially discontinuing support for Internet Explorer 8 for all of its web services starting on November 15th.
"As we announced last year, we support the latest version of Google Chrome (which automatically updates whenever it detects that a new version of the browser is available)
as well as the current and prior major release of Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari on a rolling basis.
Each time a new version of one of these browsers is released, we begin supporting the update and stop supporting the third-oldest version,"
added the search giant.

User with IE8 accessing Google apps, such as Gmail or Drive, will see messages stating they should upgrade if they want to keep full compatibility.

While it won't be an issue for most people to upgrade to the better IE9 (or another browser), anyone running a Windows XP PC will be out of luck given the fact that IE8 is the latest version of IE allowed to run on XP.
Windows XP still accounts for about 29 percent global market share, thanks mainly to corporations slow to upgrade to Windows 7 and pirates in China. Windows 7 controls 51.4 percent market share, notes PCM.

Windows XP will reach the end-of-life status in early 2014, over 13 years after its launch

Google is heading down a slippery slope where Microsoft has been already. The EU took Microsoft to court because of anti-trust violations in not allowing other browsers to be picked by choice, as it came only with IE. It was fined a huge sum of money over it.

Having said that, I see two reasons why Google would do this. One of them supports "Do No Evil" and one goes against it.

The first reason that would support it is that IE has traditionally been one of the most insecure browsers around. Seems every hacker in the world can and wants to hack IE as it is the most used browser but that figure has changed over the last few years with Chrome gaining market share from both IE and FireFox. Since the browser IE is proprietary, no real changes can be made to it by its users. Microsoft has never been a real fan of supporting default methods of net connection to websites, making programming for support of IE a nightmare for webmasters.

The second reason that would go against that motto is that Google by and far makes it's income from advertising. Advertisers want yardsticks saying how effective it's ads are and wants as large a distribution as possible for the money. Do not think for a moment that the Chrome browser is given to the public for free out of the goodness of Googles' heart. All surfing is going to send data back to Google for datamining. That datamining is valuable data for sale or to support sales of ads by Google. It can't be different given Google's income methods.

This is Google's way to steer more users to it's browser for a larger database.
