Demonoid Faces Prolonged Downtime After DDoS Attack

C & P Ernesto, TorrentFreak
27 July, 2012

A severe DDoS attack has brought down one of the most famous BitTorrent trackers. Demonoid has been inaccessible to its millions of users for more than a day and is expected to remain offline for quite some time.

The tech admin of the troubled BitTorrent tracker told TorrentFreak that the issues at hand are not easy to fix, and suggests that aside from the DDoS there might have been an attack from another angle.

Demonoid is one of the biggest torrent sites around, and has been for more than half a decade.
Over the years the site has had its fair share of downtime, sometimes disappearing for months on end.

Yesterday, a million plus Demonoid users noticed that they could no longer access the site. Instead of the usual welcome screen users were confronted with a “server busy” message, suggesting that the BitTorrent tracker is facing technical difficulties.

TorrentFreak got in touch with the tech admin of the site who informed us that they are in serious trouble. Demonoid was overloaded by a DDoS attack which hit the server hard, resulting in a series of problems that may take a while to address.

“It started as a DDoS but then it caused a series of problems. These problems need to be fixed before the site can go back up, and it’s a complicated fix this time,” the Demonoid admin told TorrentFreak.

Aside from the DDoS assault, Demonoid’s server may also have been compromised by another attack.

“There might have been an attack from another angle, an exploit of sorts, but it’s hard to tell right now without a full check of everything,” the admin says.

While Demonoid is determined to return to its full glory, it might take a while before the site is up and running again. After an exodus of staff earlier this year there is only one person available to work on server issues, so progress is slow.

“Our human resources became limited in the last few months. All tech issues are handled just by me now and there is no one else to take the job,” the admin told us, adding that his time is also limited by real life issues that take priority.

“I’ll fix the site as soon as possible, but it might be a while this time,” the admin says.

In recent years Demonoid has been in the cross-hairs of several anti-piracy outfits. It was pressured to move out of Canada by the CRIA and most recently the MPAA and RIAA reported Demonoid as a “rogue site” to the U.S. Government. However, there is no indication that the current attacks at Demonoid are anti-piracy related.

For the millions of Demonoid users there’s no other option than to wait, once again.

END

Well folks they are not the only ones being hit, we and our server were hit also, so was Google,,,, but thanks to the great teamwork, from our Senior Admin, itisjust4fun & BRONZ, our Webmaster and our server owner, we solved it quickly and were back up very fast.

However these attacks are continuing all around the web......

Demonoid Starts Redirecting to Ads and Malware

* enigmax
* 4 August, 2012

It’s been nearly a week since Demonoid went down following a huge DDoS attack and still there is no sign that the site will return. If anything, the situation has worsened somewhat. The site’s main domain is now redirecting straight to an ad network serving up malware to unsuspecting visitors.

Demonoid is one of the world’s largest and longest standing sites that not only indexes torrents, but also operates its own tracker.
Although the site has a reasonable uptime record, there have been a few occasions where it has not only gone down, but has disappeared completely. We are currently in one of those periods.

Last week the latest of Demonoid’s difficulties turned out to be caused by a massive DDoS attack which initially crippled the site and then took it completely offine. But while DDoS attacks usually stop after a point has been made or the attackers get bored, the Demonoid admin explained that he had more on his mind.

“There might have been an attack from another angle, an exploit of sorts, but it’s hard to tell right now without a full check of everything,” he told TorrentFreak.

What that attack is, or was, remains unclear, but today even more problems are becoming apparent. On July 1 and then again today Aug 2, the domain entries for Demonoid.me were updated and now the URL is redirecting to straight to adverts. Unfortunately – and we presume this is something Demonoid’s admin would be completely against – some of those adverts contain a virus and other malware.

This particular one is redirecting to a variation of the 52664.bestfastget.com domain, a site with a particularly low trust rating.

Today, TorrentFreak contacted Demonoid’s admin to ask about the current situation but we are yet to receive a response. That said, we are not overly optimistic about the site’s health and future prospects.
To begin, while Demonoid’s admin told us that he would eventually bring the site back online, he clearly has other things on his mind. A really important family event puts a torrent site nowhere near the top of his priorities.

Also, the site redirecting to ads, without so much as a “Demonoid is down for maintenance” homepage, is not a good sign either – particularly when those ads serve up malware.

Next, Demonoid has been experiencing staffing issues this year. As we mentioned in an earlier article, there were rumors that one or maybe more Demonoid staffers had been questioned by authorities about their involvement in the site. Details are scarce, but according to sources pressure may have been mounting for some time.

Readers of my earlier article detailing IFPI’s anti-piracy strategy will recall that the music industry group said it had taken “strategic action” against Demonoid.

Although its exact nature is unknown (and presumably wouldn’t extend to a DDoS), legal and/or political pressure is almost guaranteed.

For now we’ll just have to wait, but it wouldn’t come as a shock if Demonoid remained down for months. Equally, and this is a distinct possibility given all the variables, don’t be surprised if its doors stay closed for good.

Update 1: Demonoid’s admin just told us that the redirection was put in place to avoid mounting bandwidth bills caused by the DDoS.

Update 2 : Demonoid no longer appears to be redirecting.
END

Now just be warned folks do NOT go onto Demonoid`s site if it does come back up. This has all the signs that the site has been compromised (taken over by the FBI).

Believe me, I and some of the staff on this site are experienced in this and know the signs.

Trust us and this site. Your info and this site are well protected - Ladybbird....

Demonoid Busted As A Gift To The United States Government
by enigmax

The nightmare week for Demonoid has just reached a huge crescendo, with news coming out of Ukraine that following a massive DDoS attack the site has now been busted by local authorities. Those looking for a U.S. connection to the raid won’t be disappointed – a source in the country’s Interior Ministry says that the action was scheduled to coincide with Deputy Prime Minister Valery Khoroshkovsky’s trip to the United States.

Last week thousands of Demonoid users feared the worst when their beloved site disappeared from the Internet. Many thought that the site had been busted, but were eventually relieved to hear that it was ‘only’ a massive DDoS attack.

But today the roller-coaster ride plummeted to new depths, with confirmation coming out of Ukraine that the DDoS was just the beginning – the site has been busted by the authorities.

ColoCall is the largest datacenter in Ukraine and a place that has been Demonoid’s home in recent years. But in the middle of last week, in the wake of the DDoS attack, government investigators arrived at ColoCall to shut Demonoid down.

“Investigators have copied all the information from the servers Demonoid and sealed them,” an anonymous ColoCall source confirmed. “Some equipment was not seized, but now it does not work, and we were forced to terminate the agreement with the site.”

As reported on TorrentFreak following our discussions with Demonoid’s admin last week, there were suspicions that the site may have been subjected to some kind of exploit or hack in addition to the DDoS. That version of events is now confirmed by the ColoCall source.

“Shortly after [the DDoS] a hacker break-in occurred, and a few days later came the investigators,” the source added.

But aside from the busting of the site, which is the biggest BitTorrent-related raid in recent memory and one that has taken out the world’s largest torrent site/tracker combo, there is a rather large international sting in the tail.

Despite general opinion that Demonoid did not contravene Ukranian law, especially since it blocked all Ukranian IP addresses to avoid upsetting the locals, the site still attracted the attention of the authorities there. That, according to a source in the country’s government, is all down to the United States getting involved.

A source inside the Interior Ministry has informed Kommersant that the raid on Demonoid was timed to coincide with the very first trip of Deputy Prime Minister Valery Khoroshkovsky‘s trip to the United States. On the agenda: copyright infringement.

Ukraine had promised the United States that it would improve its attitude and efforts towards enforcing copyright and no doubt its Western partner will be very pleased indeed that Demonoid’s head has been presented on a platter.

But while Demonoid’s servers are in custody, the site’s admin does not appear to be. The ColoCall source would not say who is behind the site, only that its management is located in Mexico. The devil may yet be back….

If there wasn't enough insanity in the file sharing world this news just sends it over the top.

Now personally, it's been many a year since I torrented. After it became evident that torrenting was not very secure with man-in-middle harvesting of IPs, I left it. Never was one for public trackers though. Still some think that's the way to file share. The funny thing is, both torrenting and file sharing through cyberlockers is a way to get files around among those that do. In both methods, it seems the groups are almost reluctant to try the other. If they do, they go back to the one they prefer.

So maybe I'm an odd ball in this as it seemed to me that file sharing was more secure through the cyberlockers than with torrenting and I jumped ship. Never went back to torrenting afterwards. This particular tracker, while famous is one I've never been to. I think once or twice back before the bust of The Pirate Bay, I went there to read original responces written by Sunday to the various take-down requests made to them. But again, didn't look for any files there.

More so today, if you must torrent, find a private tracker. They're a bit harder to do man-in-middle IP harvesting.

Again, it can be believed that lots of diplomatic pressure has been put on the Ukraine to kill off this tracker. Most of these have later been revealed to be exactly that. Some, such as the bust of The Pirate Bay, really stink as to the set up of how they were dealt with.

Demonoid Operators Face Criminal Investigation in Mexico

Ernesto - 8 Aug 2012

Confirmation came out of Ukraine yesterday that not only had Demonoid suffered a DDoS and hacker attack, it had also been raided by the authorities.

In the middle of last week government investigators arrived at ColoCall, Demonoid’s webhost, to shut Demonoid down.

“Investigators have copied all the information from the servers Demonoid and sealed them,” an anonymous ColoCall source confirmed to local news site Kommersant.

With the dust settling today, the sequence of events is becoming a little more clear.

ColoCall Commercial Director Peter Vlasenko has now confirmed that his company had repeatedly warned Demonoid of complaints being made against it. He added that the company had also cautioned Demonoid’s operators that problems could lead to the ISP severing its relationship with the site. Last week, that’s exactly what happened.

“The Division of Economic Crimes [DEC] received an international request from Interpol to send a request to the company ColoCall. DEC sent the request to the provider, after which the ISP decided to stop working with Demonoid,” said Sergei Burlakov of Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs.

But the bad news for Demonoid doesn’t end there. The Interpol request that finally forced the closure of the site was the result of call from thousands of miles away in North America.

“In Mexico a criminal case against the owners of Demonoid has been initiated and the tracker is charged with intellectual property rights violations,” Burlakov confirmed.

Demonoid’s links to Mexico have been rumored for some time, but it was action taken last year that finally gave them credibility.

TorrentFreak learned that in October 2011, Mexican authorities carried out a raid in Monterrey, the capital city of the northeastern Mexican state of Nuevo León. The prime target was one of Demonoid’s staff. Following the action the authorities completely blocked access to the site in Mexico.

Movie industry sources confirmed that the raids had indeed resulted in the arrest of one of Demonoid’s administrators. It remains unclear whether the current investigation centers around the same individual.
END

This is not over & I hope that none of our members were members of that site.

Demonoid were just too big, like Megaupload & The Pirate Bay. The FBI always go after the "Big Boys", that go too far and earn $$ millions from their members...

I can think of a couple at minimum scenarios for who would DDoS them and why.

My first guess would be the RIAA/MPAA. They've been known to be involved in such in the past, along with other nastys. Not directly doing it themselves but hiring third party to do it so the trail doesn't lead back to their doorstep. Back in the days of Gnutella, the RIAA hired an outfit called, Loudeye. Loudeye came out with a trojan right after Microsoft setup the license tab on songs. One where no valid license would mean no play. During those days it was usually on WMA files. Microsoft also set it up where when the player didn't find a valid license it took you to a purchase site. Since this was fairly new, Microsoft didn't include much security for where you went. Loudeye set up servers that would take you to the fake licensing site giving away free trojans instead. It got so bad no one would accept a WMA song because it was libel to be needing a license. Microsoft quickly found out if they wanted the WMA format to survive they were going to have to put some sort of control on it, which they did.

The MPAA got involved with a torrent tracker hack. They hired an outfit that I can not think of the name right off the bat. It would crack a site, slip in the back, setup a legal tracker, charging money, but use the pirate site's bandwidth to do it. If and when the torrent site discovered they were compromised, that legal site would then attempt to DDoS them off line once it was discovered they were cut off from the b/w.

Where this became public knowledge was during a holiday, when another site which was legally selling torrents, lost connection to many of their customers over the holiday and it was the following Monday when they figured out what had been done. Shortly after they disconnected the hack they began to see DDoS attack. This company had thought they were in for their first major income only to find out they didn't get any money. So they turned it over to the FBI. The FBI not only found the source of the DDoS attack but when they investigated they found out the MPAA had hired him to do what he was doing.

The US Military has been beating the drum of Cyberattack. Despite there never really being one...yet. But the US has released several cyberattacks on Iran and then admitted it publicly, which is the real reason they are worried. I don't have to be a fly on the wall to know that the US Military is looking for any reason to test their new play toys. Any excuse to test them will work. Be sure the *IAAs would be quite willing to provide that excuse.

Are Demonoid Users at Risk?

Posted: 08 Aug 2012 by Ernesto, TorrentFreak

Earlier this week the news broke that after the popular BitTorrent tracker Demonoid suffered a DDoS and hacker attack, it had also been raided by the Ukrainian authorities.

Roughly a week ago government investigators arrived at Demonoid’s hosting provider ColoCall to pull the site offline. According to Sergei Burlakov of Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs the authorities acted on a request from Interpol.

“The Division of Economic Crimes [DEC] received an international request from Interpol to send a request to the company ColoCall. DEC sent the request to the provider, after which the ISP decided to stop working with Demonoid,” he said.

The request related to a criminal investigation in Mexico, where one person was arrested for his connection to the BitTorrent tracker last fall.

The raids have caused some of Demonoid’s users considerable panic, probably due to them having shared copyrighted material via the site. Now that the Ukrainian police have access to Demonoid’s data, they are naturally wondering to what extent they are exposed.

TorrentFreak posed this question to the sole tech admin of the site, but since the raids we haven’t had a response. This means that we can’t report whether some, all, or none of the user data was encrypted. What we do know is that Demonoid was prone to collecting erroneous stats, often counting uploads and downloads against users who never carried them out.

However, looking at similar raids in the past it seems highly unlikely that the authorities will go after large groups of individual users. Even if they do plan to target members (there is no indication at the moment) the most likely scenario is that they would single out a few of the top uploaders, or those who were the first to upload prominent movies, particularly if they did so in bulk.

The only thing we know for certain at this point is that there’s an investigation against Demonoid in Mexico. A source inside ColoCall (Demonoid’s former host) confirmed the Mexican connection when speaking to reporter Maria Popova of Ukrainian news site Kommersant.ua on August 6. Then working back, the MPAA reported the arrest of the site’s admin to the USTR October 26, 2011 , and the IFPI congratulated the Mexican Attorney General’s office on the raid in this official government document from October 6, 2011.

While we always strive to publish sincere and detailed articles on cases like these, it appears that one alleged and presumably now ex-moderator of Demonoid felt the need to tell Vice our reporting is “as reliable as Fox News” and that “anything from TorrentFreak should be taken with a kilo of salt.”

This attack appears to be based on one single mention where we quoted the ColoCall source who said that the site’s administration was based in Mexico. While we never gave any credence to the quote, in light of the previous documented arrest in Mexico, the MPAA’s statement to the USTR and IFPI’s congratulations to the Mexican government, we thought it was worth mentioning.

Of course this is not the first time that Demonoid “staff” have lashed out against TorrentFreak. In 2007 we were called out as liars by Demonoid’s IRC and forum moderators when we reported that the CRIA was behind’s Demonoid’s downtime. A week later Demonoid confirmed our report.

But back to the key point in hand – if we hear anything at all about the fate of user data on Demonoid, who has access to it and/or to what level it was encrypted, we’ll be sure to report back.

For the Mexican authorities, it's a matter of setting priorities.

Stopping the drug wars doesn’t seem too urgent but we have to stop these Demonoid people now.

The Mexican diplomat signed the intent to agreement over ACTA in Japan. His superiors are not happy with him at all, nor are the politicians that had already decided ACTA was dead as far as the country of Mexico was concerned.

Mexico is another country that is not happy with the US. There's been too much sneaky stuff the US has pulled. Like agreeing to NAFTA but not allowing Mexican trucking into the US until recently, which it wanted to do to reach Canada with their goods. Then there is the issue of the US being gun smugglers through Fast and Furious, arming their mortal enemies, the Drug traffickers in secret, which any where else would be considered an act of war. Then there is the ACTA which Mexico doesn't really get anything out of. Plus the War on Drugs is being fought on their home ground, causing 50,000 estimated deaths last year. They are seriously considering dropping out of the War on Drugs because it has become a civil war and politicians can't stay in power if they fail to obey the will of the people long enough. They've already enough troubles with corruption.

I would not be too surprised to see the Mexican authorities consider this a less than #1 priority unless the US forks up some sort of deal.

Update re: Demonoid CLOSED & Sale BANNED-Criminal Prosecution

Demonoid Raid Credited To IFPI, Multiple Arrests In Mexico Reported

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 , Ernesto

Earlier this week it became evident that after the popular BitTorrent tracker Demonoid had suffered a DDoS and hacker attack, it ultimately had bigger things to worry about.

Sergei Burlakov of Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said that following a request from Interpol, Ukrainian government investigators had arrived at Demonoid’s hosting provider ColoCall and had the site taken offline. ColoCall said that ultimately the decision to remove the site had been theirs.
Until now, information on the raid has only come from Ukraine, prompting some to question why the music and movie industries have remained silent on such a prominent takedown. The wait for that is now over. The IFPI said their complaints have finally delivered results.

“Demonoid was a leading global player in digital music piracy which acted as unfair competition to the more than 500 licensed digital music services that offer great value music to consumers while respecting the rights of artists, songwriters and record companies,” the IFPI’s anti-piracy director Jeremy Banks said in a statement.
“The operation to close Demonoid was a great example of international cooperation to tackle a service that was facilitating the illegal distribution of music on a vast scale. I would like to thank all those officers involved in this operation to close a business that was built on the abuse of other people’s rights.”

There have been clear links to Mexico at several stages of the operation to take down Demonoid. Today those links have only been further underlined.
We already knew that Mexican authorities had launched a criminal investigation into the owners of Demonoid and that the Attorney General of Mexico had become involved in the case last year, but today it was confirmed that there have been a number of arrests and asset seizures in the country.

John Newton head of INTERPOL’s Trafficking in Illicit Goods Sub-Directorate said that international cooperation is key to ensuring that “organized criminals” are stopped.
“In this instance police forces on different sides of the world worked together with INTERPOL and the music industry to successfully disrupt the distribution chain for illicit digital music products,” he said.

Since many Demonoid members are worried that they may be at risk TorrentFreak asked IFPI whether any users are or will be targeted. However, the group told us that they can’t comment any further on an ongoing investigation.

In the meantime and in retaliation for the raids on Demonoid, elements of the Anonymous collective have launched a number of DDoS attacks on websites operated by the Ukrainian authorities. But a member of the group said that they may go much further, if they can get their hands on the site’s code.

“By getting the .torrent files and website [we would be able to reinforce] Demonoid’s mark on history with a permanent mirror arrangement,” he said

I'm going to remain a bit skeptical until all the winds from what appears to be a tropic storm coming out of the news. It's like a hot wind that sort of smells like BS.

Reason I say that, is that the typical operation goes like we got bodies to arrest. Then they are tried in the court of public opinion through the news, long before it ever reaches court and you find out the real facts. Look at Megaupload. They are still hollering thieves and bandits, despite it looking more and more like the legal side were the real bandits.

Once it's been milked for all the propaganda they can get out of it, then you might stand a chance of finding out the real facts.

Demonoid Domains Go Up FOR SALE
  • enigmax, August 13, 2012
While it’s undoubtedly been a turbulent couple of weeks for Demonoid, its loyal users still had hope that one day the site might return. However, today the chances of that happening appear to have been cut from an optimistic 50/50 to much, much less. All key Demonoid domains are now up for sale to the highest bidder, signaling what could be the start of the end of an era

With an army of passionate fans, Demonoid was spoken about fondly by many in the torrent community. Just two weeks ago it was one of the world’s largest and most thriving torrent sites but a DDoS and hacker attack followed by a police raid brought it to its knees.
After days of silence, last Thursday the IFPI took credit for the complaint behind the takedown.

Quote:
“The operation to close Demonoid was a great example of international cooperation to tackle a service that was facilitating the illegal distribution of music on a vast scale. I would like to thank all those officers involved in this operation to close a business that was built on the abuse of other people’s rights,” said the IFPI’s anti-piracy director Jeremy Banks.
Last week a source at ColoCall, Demonoid’s former webhost, said he believed that the site’s management was based in Mexico. It was later confirmed that a criminal investigation is underway in the country and that a number of arrests and asset seizures had already taken place.
However, in the middle of all the chaos and arrests TorrentFreak maintained contact with the site’s technical admin who still has control of the site’s domains. Due to his presumed position of freedom hope remained that one day the site would return, but today that seems more unlikely than ever.

The three key Demonoid domains – Demonoid.me, Demonoid.com and Demonoid.ph – are now all up for sale on Sedo, a popular domain name and website marketplace.

Selling the domains now while traffic to Demonoid remains high should ensure a good price for the vendor, but it seems unlikely that any buyer would look to relaunch as a torrent site.
Of course, “up for sale” doesn’t mean “sold”, but at this stage hopes that the site might one day return appear to be dwindling faster than ever.
Later we hope to obtain a comment from Demonoid on this latest development and will update this post accordingly.
END

Personally I dont think anyone in their right mind should buy one of those Domain names.....if they do they are asking for trouble.

Demonoid Domain Sale Banned Over Legal Issues
Ernesto 20 Aug 2012

After being pulled offline by a DDoS and suspected hacker attack, nearly two weeks ago news broke that Demonoid’s servers had been shutdown in the Ukraine.

The action followed a request from Interpol, with the music group IFPI later taking credit for the takedown. While some of Demonoid’s users still expect the site to reopen with a new hosting provider, a comeback appeared less likely when the three main Demonoid domains were listed for sale last week.

Demonoid.me, Demonoid.com and Demonoid.ph were put up for sale at the popular domain name and website marketplace Sedo, but as it turned out, not for long. Two of the three domain names have now been de-listed due to legal issues.

Anyone wishing to buy the .PH or .COM domain now see the following message;

Quote:
“Due to possible legal issues associated with this domain, Sedo is not able to offer services for the domain. Please consider selecting an alternative domain.”

Interestingly, the .ME domain which acted as the primary Demonoid address for more than a year, has not been de-listed by Sedo.

Banned over “legal issues”

We contacted Sedo who informed us that while they take a neutral position in copyright issues, the company has an obligation to protect its users.
“In addition to processing notice-takedown complaints from third-party rights holders, Sedo also employs an internal listing suspension policy when we’re made materially aware of a domain that is either subject to ownership dispute or under investigation by relevant law enforcement,” a Sedo spokesperson told TorrentFreak.
“This is done to protect potential buyers from purchasing a domain where its use and ownership could be threatened after the purchase for unforeseen circumstances. In such situations, the listing user is informed and once they can provide documentation demonstrating the domain’s clear title, the listing will be reinstated.”
While Sedo said it “can’t go into specifics”, the company suggested that no third-party or law enforcement group had ordered the de-listing of the domains. Sedo did not respond to our question why the main .ME domain is still for sale.

At the moment TorrentFreak hasn’t heard from Demonoid as to why the domains are being sold, or what this means for the site’s future. If there is any.

I find it sad that an icon of file sharing, no matter how that sharing is done, is gone. While Demonoid may not be back, it's faithful are still around. Just as Napster created whack-a-mole, so has the IFPI created something they have no clue of as they celebrate their supposed success.

As a mark of future activity, it's been noted in some of the news channels that deal with copyright, that there is some good and bad news on the horizon. The good news is the membership that makes up those that donate dues to the RIAA have halved their donations due to hard times. Even the CEO and senior management have taken a hit on their annual income. The bad part is that while everything in the business is running on leaner incomes, the lobbying part is still unchanged. This tells me the plan now is to get the government to do what they can't afford to do.

None of that would be necessary other than these lawyers and accountants don't understand the market and don't want to. This follows the senior management overvaluing their product. Between high costs, stupid demands for licensing, and fear of piracy rather than seeking a more profitable business model, has driven them just in the direction I like to see them go...towards bankruptcy. It is my sincere hope that what rises from the ashes to be better than what exists now.
