Gallo: If You’re Campaigning Against ACTA, You’re A Terrorist

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 05:51 AM PDT

Copyright Monopoly: In a remarkable statement, the copyright monopoly fundamentalist Marielle Gallo – of the Gallo Report infamy – says that the citizens of Europe who have been campaigning against ACTA are terrorists.

In a just-published interview (in French), Marielle Gallo – a Member of the European Parliament, no less – calls the anti-ACTA campaigns “A soft form of terrorism” (une forme douce de terrorisme). Yes, she really does say that the citizens of Europe, her constituency, who contact her colleagues in Parliament regarding a concerning political matter should be regarded as terrorists.

Screenshot from PCInpact with the Gallo interview (in French)

This shows a couple of things.

1. The monopoly maximalists have completely gone bonkers, off the deep end, and fishing. Calling your own constituents terrorists in media when they express political opinions that differ from your own is more than political suicide, it’s straitjacket material.
2. The monopoly maximalists are scared beyond their wits of getting their dogma questioned, their facade scratched at, and losing their control of the monopoly-maximizing discourse. Apart from the obvious proof of having lost their wits, they are now acting in desperation and are at a loss for stronger words to denounce their opponents. (“Pirate” has kind of lost its denouncing effect when people get elected on the pirate banner.)
3. Accordingly, the pendulum is starting to swing back in the right direction. The reason for the dogmatic maximalists’ obvious discomfort to this level of ridiculous statements – on the record, no less – can be no other than a feeling of situational control slipping through their fingers.

Overall, this is an excellent sign. Let’s continue with this form of “terrorism”. Myself, I just call it democracy at work.

Beyond a win on ACTA, we should take the opportunity to reverse the trend and express our opinion that the monopolies should begin to dismantle.

UPDATE: Several people have pointed out that Gallo also states in this interview that the Members of European Parliament should be doing the thinking, and not citizens.

Default Re: If You’re Campaigning Against ACTA, You’re A Terrorist

More times than I can count, the copywrong gang seeks any method that sounds like it has some realism to it (whether it does or not) as an explanation why they need more laws. Doesn't have to have facts behind it, just has to sound reasonable. Something like downloading is a lost sale is one as an example.

For what seems to be the last decade, the copywrong gang has been trying to get government to spend the money fighting file sharing instead of them. So how do you do that? Obviously the point is to show the Justice Department that something illegal is going on. After all, if the other guy is making lots of money, or if they are taking your business away; there must be something about it illegal. This is a very common viewpoint to those industries when they are threatened by technological upsets.

So how do you get the Justice Department sicced on file sharers? Why claim it's illegal of course. What's more illegal than terrorism? This has been tried with criminal gangs are making money, it's been tried with terrorism is selling counterfeit movies to finance their 'war', it's been tried with music and someone is profiting because we aren't; no where can they actually produce the evidence showing money transfer is happening to support this wild idea. It was done with Limewire but that fell flat on it's face for lack of evidence. It was tried early on with cyberlockers. No creditable proof was ever turned up on that. Merely the accusation and nothing else.

It's all about the money and control to be the gatekeepers. In a choice between those two, they will always pick control as the most important, even if it costs them money.

ACTA is mainly about IP protection. You know what? None of that would be necessary if the music and movie houses would license file sharing sites. Doing so would take away their control and they will hang on to that thought till their dying breath.
