Santo Domingo.- Software piracy means companies lose around US$86.0 million yearly, though the practice has fallen from 77% to 76%, affirmed Microsoft general manager Jorge Cabeza.

He said the country’s technology telecom infrastructure have evolved quickly in the last few years, as evidenced by the social networks’ generation of data and the massive use of tools.

Quoted by news source listin.com.do, Cabeza said Dominican Republic’s 40% Internet penetration rate considerably above Latin America average of 15%, with Argentina’s 60% heading the region.

The company is focused on integrating hardware and software, Cabeza said, by coordinating with the equipment manufacturers on the hardware specifications the users need to take advantage of the best programs. “In Windows 8 we’re being much stricter on the minimum requirements, mainly in the RM (resource management) screens of the new tablets, because we want to guarantee the users the optimal experience with our programs.”

Social investment

The executive added that Microsoft supports the country’s adoption of technology as a tool for education in the last five years, training more than 27,000 teachers, jointly with the Education Ministry, and contributing more than US$2.5 million to install technological facilities for the education system nationwide.
