Missing Madeleine McCann's Parents Receive Online Death Threats

LONDON — A dossier of online abuse and death threats aimed at the family of missing British girl Madeleine McCann is being investigated, officials said Thursday. The messages include graphic tweets and Facebook posts calling for violence against the girl’s parents, London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed to NBC News.

The three-year-old vanished from her hotel room in Portugal in 2007 while mother Kate and father Gerry dined nearby with friends.They were initially named as suspects by Portuguese police but that status was lifted in July 2008. The McCanns sued Britain's Daily Express, Sunday Express, Daily Star and Star on Sunday newspapers over their coverage of the case.
They later printed front-page apologies for suggesting the parents were to blame for her death and paid the McCanns £550,000 ($891,000) in damages.

The 80-page document was submitted by members of the public on September 9, police said.

The messages included calls for the McCanns to be tortured and killed, with one saying they should "burn in hell." Another said: "I hope that the McCanns are living in total misery."
The content of the messages was first reported by Britain's Sky News. The Met said it was working with the McCanns and the U.K.’s Crown Prosecution Service "to find the best way to take this forward."

New Tests over McCann 'Troll' Death

Police are awaiting the result of post-mortem tests carried out on the body of a housewife who was accused of directing online abuse at Madeleine McCann's parents.

An inquest at Leicester Coroner's Court UK, was told a post-mortem examination conducted yesterday had failed to establish the cause of Brenda Leyland's death.
The body of Mrs Leyland, 63, was discovered in a Leicester hotel room last Saturday, two days after she featured in a Sky News report exposing internet "trolling" of Kate and Gerry McCann.

Opening the inquest, Leicester Coroner Catherine Mason was told there was no evidence of foul play or third party involvement in the death.
Police Sergeant Kevin Taylor told the coroner he was informed that Mrs Leyland was dead after being sent to the Marriott Hotel in Enderby.

The officer said: "At the scene I was joined by another officer and a county ambulance first responder unit.
"I was then informed by the paramedic and the other officer that there was a deceased female within the room."

Sgt Taylor added that officers were awaiting the results of additional post-mortem tests and were still undertaking inquiries into the death.
Adjourning the inquest until December 18, Mrs Mason said:

"It's quite clear from the evidence before me that I am not in a position to conclude (the inquest) today.
"The cause of death is still not known and police inquiries are rightly ongoing.
"Therefore, with the sergeant still tasked to complete the police inquiries and the pathologist still to provide a cause of death, I am adjourning the inquest."

Mrs Leyland, from Burton Overy, Leicestershire, is reported to have posted thousands of messages on Twitter attacking the McCanns, whose daughter Madeleine disappeared in Portugal in 2007.
Officers from Leicestershire Police, who are not treating the death as suspicious, were alerted to the discovery of Ms Leyland's body at 1.42pm on Saturday.

A convicted paedophile thought to be part of a child sex ring linked to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann is being extradited to Britain.
Roderick MacDonald, 77, was arrested on the Maltese island of Gozo after he fled the UK while he was on licence following his conviction for molesting two girls, five and seven, in Brighton in 2012. He was also previously convicted in Australia for molesting children.

The former oil worker was reportedly living in the Algarve when Madeleine disappeared from the McCanns' holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in May 2007, shortly before her fourth birthday.

The serial sex offender appeared in court in Malta on Monday after Britain secured a European Arrest Warrant and did not oppose immediate extradition to the UK.

Arrest: Briton Roderick MacDonald, pictured when he was arrested in Pattaya, Thailand, is being extradited back to the UK and was reportedly in Praia da Luz at the the time of Madeleine's disappearance


MacDonald was first arrested at a campsite in the Algarve in 2010 and extradited to Australia - where he was wanted for the 1998 rape of an eight-year-old.

He received six months in prison after accepting a plea deal for indecently assaulting the child in Australia and fled to Thailand after he was released, but Thai authorities deported him back to Britain when they found out about his past.

He then settled in Brighton, East Sussex, but, despite being made to sign the Sex Offenders Register, was convicted of molesting two girls, five and seven in 2012.
He received a year-long sentence but it was suspended for two years. He changed his surname from Robinson to MacDonald and fled to the Far East soon after.
He was arrested in Malta on Monday and his extradition to Britain - to which he consented - was approved in court yesterday.

Madeleine was aged three when she went missing on May 3, 2007, from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, as her parents Kate and Gerry dined at a nearby tapas restaurant.
The toddler, who lived in Rothley with her family, had been left in the rented apartment at the seaside Ocean Club resort, along with her siblings, twins Sean and Amelie.

This week a new Portuguese prosecutor was charged with solving the disappearance of Madeleine, seven years after she vanished.
Ines Sequeira will lead the investigation into the case as Scotland Yard prepares to return to Praia da Luz to 're-interview' three suspects.
Ms Sequeira is said to be 'utterly determined' to solve the case, bringing fresh hope to the child's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann.

'Ines is still trying to get her feet under the table and is having to be briefed on scores of cases including Madeleine’s,' a source close to the investigation said.
'But she has been appointed as the new prosecutor and the Scotland Yard team has been given renewed hope of being able to start work again in Portugal before the end of the month.
'Ms Sequeira is one of the sharpest and most ambitious prosecutors in Portugal.
'She is utterly determined to get a result on the Madeleine inquiry.'
It comes after British police sent a fifth letter to Portuguese officers requesting access to the investigation.

'They’re banking on this new meeting with Portuguese police being their chance to argue their case face-to-face,' the source added.
'Ines will obviously take the final decision on the letter but she’ll consult the police chiefs on the Algarve before making her mind up.'

Scotland Yard officers are due to fly to Portugal later this month to re-interview three of seven suspects previously questioned in Faro police stations.
Among them are Jose Carlos Fernandes da Silva, an ex-worker at the Ocean Club resort, Paulo Ribeiro, who looks like a man seen near the apartment, and charity collector Ricardo Rodrigues.

Police to Quiz 11 in Madeleine Hunt

Detectives investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann are expected to begin questioning 11 people today.

British police working on the hunt for the missing girl are thought to have arrived in the Algarve to take part in interviews with individuals who it is thought may have information relating to the case.


They will spend three days working on the case alongside their Portuguese counterparts, according to reports.

Scotland Yard UK has declined to comment, saying it will not provide a "running commentary" on the inquiry.

The delegation in Portugal is believed to include the incoming head of the British side of the investigation after it emerged last week that the officer who has led Operation Grange since it was launched in 2011 is to step down before Christmas.

Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Wall will officially replace Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood, who is to retire, on December 22.

Scotland Yard said a handover was currently taking place and Kate and Gerry McCann, Madeleine's parents, had been informed of the change.

British officers spent eight days searching three areas of land in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz in June, close to where Madeleine disappeared more than seven years ago, but found no new evidence.

Madeleine, then aged three, disappeared from her holiday apartment on May 3 2007 as her parents dined at a nearby tapas restaurant with friends, and it became one of the most famous missing persons cases of all time.

Portuguese police closed down their investigation in 2008 but the Metropolitan Police launched their own operation three years later.
