Cop Guilty of Justine Damond's Murder - Justine's Father Says He is Satisfied With The Guilty Verdict Handed Down to The Former Minneapolis Police Officer Who Fatally Shot Her.

Minneapolis police officer Mohamed Noor faces a long stint behind bars after a jury swiftly found him guilty of third-degree murder for shooting dead Australian life coach Justine Ruszczyk Damond in an alley.

Ms Damond, a trained veterinarian from Sydney who dedicated her life to helping others, followed that path on a warm Minneapolis night in 2017.

The 40-year-old heard a woman's screams near an alley behind her home, feared it was a sexual assault and called police.

Ms Damond was barefoot and dressed in pyjama pants and a pink t-shirt featuring drawings of a koala mum and baby when she approached Noor's police vehicle and was shot by him.

"Ironically the Minneapolis Police Department emblem on the squad door reads 'To Protect with Courage and To Serve With Compassion'," Ms Damond's American fiance, Don Damond, told reporters after the verdict.

"Where were these values that night?

"Justine tried to help."

When Ms Damond appeared at Noor's police Ford Explorer Noor, sitting in the front passenger seat, shot across his partner Matthew Harrity and out the window.

The bullet struck her in the stomach, severed a major artery and she died soon after in the alley.

Noor, a police officer less than two years, and Officer Harrity, testified Ms Damond startled them.

Noor feared they were being ambushed and said he shot in self-defence.

Ms Damond, who was holding a gold glittery cell phone, was unarmed and without alcohol or drugs in her system.

The jury of 10 men and two women deliberated for 11 hours over two days after more than three weeks of testimony.

The third-degree murder carries a maximum 12.5-year prison sentence.

He was also found guilty of second-degree manslaughter, which has a four-year maximum.

Noor, 33, was found not guilty of the most serious count, second-degree murder. It has a maximum sentence of 40 years.

He was taken into custody immediately after the verdict despite his lawyer's request he be free on bond pending sentencing June 7.

Ms Damond's father, John Ruszczyk, who lives in Sydney and attended the trial, said their grieving family was satisfied with the verdicts but slammed police and investigators from Minnesota's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

The Damond family has also filed a $US50 million ($A71 million) civil lawsuit against Noor, Officer Harrity, the city of Minneapolis and its current and former police chiefs.

The jury watched how police on scene after the shooting turned their body cameras on and off.

They also heard how the squad car was washed before testing was completed and there was criticism over how long Ms Damond's body was left in the alley.

Noor also refused to talk to investigators.

"We would like to note we believe the conviction was reached despite the active resistance of a number of Minneapolis officers, including the head of their union and either active resistance or gross incompetence of the BCA, particularly at the beginning of the investigation," Mr Ruszczyk said.

Ms Damond was murdered weeks before her wedding in Hawaii.

"This case is about Justine and Justine lived to teach us about love," Mr Damond told reporters.

"She lived to teach us about our own human potential.

"She taught us to live joyfully.

"She taught us to laugh and she demonstrated what it mean to live from the heart."
