Movies Moors Murders: Search For Childs' Body ENDS-NO Remains Found

Ian Brady's Two Locked Briefcases 'Could Reveal Victim's Burial Site' - But May Never Be Opened

Police have tried and failed to get a search warrant to go through the late serial killer’s possessions

Mirror UK, 14 FEB 2019.

Two briefcases Moors murderer Ian Brady had locked away on his deathbed may never be opened despite claims the contents could reveal where his victim Keith Bennett was buried.

Brady demanded his locked briefcases be taken from his room at Ashworth Hospital on Merseyside and put into storage in the hours before he died in May 2017.

Police have tried and failed to get a search warrant to go through the serial killer’s possessions.

Keith’s brother Alan has said there is a ‘desperate’ need to examine the killer’s s paperwork because he took the secret of the 12-year-old’s final resting place on Saddleworth Moor with him to the grave.

But a district judge at Manchester Magistrates’ Court turned down a police application to search them after he died of cancer because the killer and Myra Hindley are dead there is no chance of a prosecution.

Detectives had argued they only learned about them when Brady passed away - but the court defeat and further legal advice persuaded them not to go to the High Court.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said “The application [for a search warrant] was heard by a district judge on May 16, 2017. Based on legal advice the force did not proceed to the High Court.”

Officers also asked Robin Makin, Brady’s solicitor of 25 years who also controls his will, to let them inspect the briefcases and paperwork but he also refused.

Brady was jailed for life in 1965 and spent the next 50 years taunting his victims’ families, telling police he was ‘puzzled’ they never found Keith’s remains and in 1987 even took officers on to the moor.

Myra Hindley was also taken back to Saddleworth in the 1980s (Image: PA)

His accomplice Myra Hindley was also taken back to Saddleworth in the 1980s when they discovered the remains of Pauline Reade - but never any trace of Keith.

His brother Alan Bennett said: “There is a desperate need to look for anything that may help in the recovery of Keith’s body and there may be something in those cases.

“My brother’s body still remains on the moor while all the other victims have been returned to their loved ones for a proper burial. There seems to be no compassion or thought for Keith or his family.”

He added that he had correspondence with Brady while he was alive and the serial killer told him there were ‘instructions’ for him in his will.

He has made a ‘personal plea’ to Mr Makin by email and letter but claims he has heard nothing.

Brady died, aged 79, from cancer and emphysema in Ashworth Hospital.
Greater Manchester Police have said they will never close the case despite Brady’s death.

Keith Bennett disappeared on the way to his grandmother’s house on June 16 1964.
Hindley had lured him into her car and driven him to the Moors where he was murdered.

The schoolboy’s mother, Winnie Johnson, died in 2012 after battling cancer and fought tirelessly for decades to find her son and provide a Christian burial.

Brady and Hindley’s Victims Were:

Pauline Reade, 16, was Brady and Hindley’s first victim.
She was on her way to a local dance when Hindley persuaded her to get in her car.
They drove Pauline to Saddleworth Moor where she was raped, beaten and stabbed.

John Kilbride, 12, was snatched from Ashton market on Saturday November 23, 1963. He was strangled and buried in a shallow grave. He was the second of Brady and Hindley’s five victims.

Keith Bennett, 12, disappeared on the way to his grandmother’s house.
Hindley had lured him into her car and driven him to the Moors where he was murdered. The method of killing has never been made clear. The pair buried his body which has never been found.

Lesley Ann Downey, 10, disappeared on Boxing Day.
She had been snatched from the fair and taken back to Hindley’s house.
She was brutally assaulted with the ordeal captured on tape.

Edward Evans, 17, was the sick duo’s final victim.
He had just been to see Manchester United play when Brady lured in Edward. Brady repeatedly bludgeoned Evans with an axe.

Movies re: Sadistic Child Killers Myra Hindley & Ian Brady-Black Widow Claims-She Slapped Myra

New Law Could Solve Moors Murder Mystery of Where Ian Brady Buried Keith Bennett

Along with his twisted accomplice, Myra Hindley, Moors Murderer Ian Brady tortured, sexually assaulted and murdered five children between 1963 and 1965 - but one victim's body was never found

A change in the law could finally solve the mystery of where Moors Murderer Ian Brady buried his final victim.

BBC News, 19 FEB, 2021.

Keith Bennett's body has never been found (Image: PA)

Home Secretary Priti Patel is reportedly planning to give police warrants to seize material that could locate murder victims' remains.

The new law could be used to search two briefcases belonging to Brady that have so far remain sealed since his death four years ago.

The family of Keith Bennett, 12, the third victim of Brady and twisted accomplice Myra Hindley, believe those briefcases could solve the mystery of where his body is buried.

Along with Hindley, Brady tortured, sexually assaulted and murdered five children between 1963 and 1965.

The evil pair then buried their victims' broken bodies on the edge of the windy open spaces close to Saddleworth, near Greater Manchester.

But the remains of Keith have never been found and his mother Winnie died in 2012 without knowing fully what had happened to her son.

Before he died on May 15, 2017, Brady ordered that two locked Samsonite briefcases should be taken from his bedside and handed to his solicitor.

He had insisted they should not be opened until after his death.

Now, the Daily Mail reports that a new law brought by Home Secretary Priti Patel could lead to the opening of those briefcases and yielding more clues that would point to where the child victim was buried.

The forthcoming Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, if passed, would introduce measures allowing investigators warrants for material that could reveal the location of a murder victim’s remains.

Brady murdered five children alongside twisted accomplice Myra Hindley

Detectives on the case have so far been unable to examine documents contained in two combination-locked briefcases left by Brady after he died in 2017.

Miss Patel met Keith’s younger brother Alan, now 64, this week to discuss the plans.

He has long believed Brady’s paperwork may contain vital clues about where his brother was buried on Saddleworth Moor.

"Keith’s story will be known to many, but what may not be known is the struggle which our family has gone through to try to seek closure,’ Mr Bennett told the Mail.

"The Bill is large and wide ranging and will change the laws in a major way regarding police investigations."

Brady took his evil secrets to the grave as he died in “distress” gasping for air, and an inquest in September 2017 gave hope of new clues to locate the body of Keith Bennett, with the revelation of the briefcases.

Terry Kilbride, 62, whose brother John was another of Brady’s five victims, previously said: “There must be something in those briefcases for him to go to those lengths to hide them away.

“It’s all the hope we have for finding Keith.”

And Terry West, 66, brother of victim Lesley Ann Downey, added: “I would like to know what’s in those briefcases.

“Fingers crossed there might be *something that would finally help us to find Keith’s body.”

Update re: Moors Murderers Ian Brady & Myra Hindley: Search For Childs' Body Restarts

Black Widow Who Killed Her Lover Recalls Moment She Slapped Myra Hindley

Now a 72-year-old great-grandmother living a quiet life, Linda Calvey, who started off as a getaway driver before taking part in armed robberies, says looking back on her former life is 'surreal'

Daily Mirror UK, 18 MAR 2021.

Linda Calvey in January 1979 (Image: Mirrorpix)

“I was scared about going to prison, but I still did it. We saw getting caught as being part of the job.”

Linda was drawn into crime after her first husband, Mickey Calvey, was shot in the back by a policeman during a botched robbery in 1978.

And she says taking over his role in the gang was easy. “I always got on more with the men than the women,” she said.

“After Mickey died, it was a natural progression that I stepped up and took his place, and I was treated with respect.”

In 1985, Linda was sentenced to seven years in prison for armed robbery, serving three and a half.

Then, in December 1990, 18 months after she had left jail, Cook was fatally shot.

The jury found Linda guilty on the basis that she had paid hitman Danny Reece £10,000 to kill Cook, then fired the final shot when he lost his nerve.

But Linda says she was simply a witness to Cook’s murder by Reece, and says serving 18 years in prison for a crime she didn’t commit was “very hard”.

She adds: “I didn’t commit that crime. I was the second case in British legal history where a judge referred me straight to the Court of Appeal.

“His recommendation was seven years, but I ended up doing nearly 18 because I wouldn’t say I committed the murder. Being in prison for such a long time, not only did I lose so much, but my children lost so much too. I wasn’t there for big events such as my daughter’s wedding and my grandchildren being born.”

Linda was inside with notorious lag Myra Hindley, who she said “oozed evil”.

“The very first time I came face to face with Myra I walked up to her and gave her a slap,” recalls Linda.

“I got worried about what I’d done, but I was glad I did it. She was a really horrible person.”

Linda was always respected by the other inmates.

“My reputation as the Black Widow stood me in good stead,” she says.

“In some weird way I was looked up to, like a mother figure. The women in jail wanted me to be their friend.

“I never experienced bullying personally, and I would step in and stop people doing it to others.”

While in jail, Linda was romanced from afar by gangland boss Reggie Kray, who proposed twice over the phone, and Charles Bronson, who said he didn’t like Linda’s Black Widow nickname and called her “my black rose”.

She also married – and then divorced – Reece while in HMP Durham.

In 2008 Linda left prison, moved to the outskirts of east London and found love again with her third husband, retired businessman George Caeser.

And she “regrets” getting involved in the criminal underworld. She says: “I’ve always really regretted it. I would say to anybody, ‘Don’t go for a life of crime.’

“Rarely does it pay, and there’s a lot of heartache with it.”

One of London's most notorious gangsters says looking back on her former life, which saw her slap Myra Hindley in prison, is 'surreal.'

Linda Calvey was given the moniker 'Black Widow' because every man she was involved with ended up dead.

And after she was found guilty of killing her lover Ronnie Cook, she was jailed for 18 years and became the UK’s longest-serving female prisoner.

Now a 72-year-old great-grandmother living a quiet life, Linda, who started off as a getaway driver before taking part in armed robberies, says looking back on her former life is 'surreal.'

According to the Daily Star she said: "I look back and think, ‘Was that really me?’

“It’s surreal. It’s like looking back on the life of somebody else, because I can’t imagine how I did do the things I did.

Moors Murders: Search For Keith Bennetts' Body Restarts

Ian Brady & Myra Hindley Were The MOST EVIL Sadistic Child Killers in History

The search for the body of one of the Moors murderers' victims has restarted after "potential human remains" were found on moorland, police have said.

BBC News 1 OCT 2022

Keith Bennett was killed in 1964 and is the only victim of the pair whose remains have never been found

A wider view of the remote area on Saddleworth Moor

Keith Bennett, 12, was one of five children tortured and killed by Ian Brady and Myra Hindley in the 1960s, but his body has never been recovered.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said it had received information about a "site of interest" on Saddleworth Moor.

Keith's brother had been told about the "potential development", it added.

Keith disappeared on 16 June 1964 while on his way to see his grandmother in Chorlton-on-Medlock, Manchester.

Police searched Saddleworth Moor in 1986 following reports Hindley and Brady had confessed to his murder.

His mother Winnie Johnson, who died in 2012, spent her life trying to locate her son, even taking to the moor herself, armed with a spade.

A plaque in her and Keith's memory was placed on the moor, with the inscription: "To Winnie and Keith. May you both RIP. Keith will come home."

GMP's Force Review Officer Martin Bottomley said police had been contacted on Thursday by the representative of an author who has been researching the murders.

He said after "direct contact with the author, we were informed that he had discovered what he believes are potential human remains in a remote location on the moors".

Mr Bottomley said the author had agreed to meet officers "to elaborate on his find and direct us to a site of interest".

He said after a site assessment, specialist officers had "begun initial exploration activity".

"We are in the very early stages of assessing the information which has been brought to our attention, but have made the decision to act on it in line with a normal response to a report of this kind," he said.

"It is far too early to be certain whether human remains have been discovered and this is expected to take some time."

Brady, who was born in Glasgow but later moved to Manchester, was jailed in 1966 for the murders of John Kilbride, aged 12, Lesley Ann Downey, 10, and Edward Evans, 17.

In 1985, after being moved to a secure hospital, Brady also admitted murdering Keith and 16-year-old Pauline Reade.

The children had been abducted by Brady and his partner Hindley, who died in prison in 2002, between 1963 and 1965.

The pair were caught after Hindley's brother-in-law witnessed the murder of Edward and reported it to police, who found his body at Brady and Hindley's shared home in Hyde, Greater Manchester.

Lesley Ann was the first victim to be found on Saddleworth Moor, after police received a tip-off from one of Brady's neighbours, and subsequent searches of the area unearthed the remains of Pauline and John.

Keith's body was never found and Brady, who died in 2017, never revealed where it was buried, despite being taken to the moor to join a police search in 1987.

In 2009, police said a covert search operation, which used a wealth of scientific experts, had also failed to discover any trace of the boy.

Police have conducted numerous searches for Keith's remains, including in 1987 when they were joined by Brady

Following Brady's death, his lawyer Robin Makin told BBC Radio 4's Today programme he was with his client less than two hours before he died but the whereabouts of the remains of Keith Bennett did not come up in conversation.

"I would be very surprised if he really had information that was useful," he said.

"He did go to the moors a long time ago and I suspect that if there had been information for him that he could have provided, he would have provided it then."

The Five Victims of The Moors Murderers

UPDATE
Police could have a major breakthrough in the infamous Moors murders, as a skull has been found on Saddleworth Moor. The “potential human remains” could be those of 12-year-old Keith Bennett - the only victim never to be found.

Unhappy Re: Moors Murders: Search For Childs' Body ENDS-NO Remains Found

Police End Search for Moors Murder Victim Keith Bennett as NO Remains Found

Police were exploring a patch of Saddleworth Moor after reports a skull had been found, prompting fresh hope that the body of Keith Bennett had finally been discovered

Daily Mirror UK 8 OCT 2022

Keith Bennett was snatched and murdered in the 1960s, but his remains have never been found

The family of Moors murder victim Keith Bennett face fresh heartache as police confirmed no human remains have been found in a new search for the murdered schoolboy.

The 12-year-old was on his way to his grandmother's house when he was snatched in June 1964 by murderers Myra Hindley and Ian Brady - the third child killed by the couple.

Cruelly, the evil pair refused to reveal where Keith’s body was buried before their deaths, leaving the family devastated.

But their hopes were raised last week when amateur detective and author, Russell Edwards, claimed to have found a partial skull on the site, which he believed to be Keith's remains.

Police confirmed they had launched a new search in a bid to find these "potential human remains" on Thursday evening last week.

But cops have now ended the search as it was confirmed no evidence to indicate human remains was found, despite a complete excavation by accredited forensic experts.

The search concluded there was no evidence to indicate the presence of human remains, Greater Manchester Police said.

The officers in white hazmat suits spent days in fierce downpours and heavy winds combing the area with the help of a drone.

The original development had come after author Russell Edwards - who has been researching the murders for a book - contacted police when he and his team found a skull.

Mr Edwards believed he had located the youngster's remains following "extensive soil analysis" by independent experts who are reported to have concluded the skull as human.

Forensic officers examining the "remains", believed to be of Keith Bennett

Forensic anthropologists had been examining potential samples of body tissue taken from the area in the hope they were of the youngster

Keith was last seen by his mother in the early evening of June 16, 1964 after he left home in Eston Street, Longsight, Manchester, on his way to his grandmother's house nearby.

Brady and Hindley murdered five people in total, and three were later found buried on Saddleworth Moor.

The victims were: Pauline Reade, 16, who disappeared on her way to a disco on July 12, 1963; John Kilbride, 12, who was snatched in November the same year; Lesley Ann Downey, 10, who was lured away from a funfair on Boxing Day 1964; and Edward Evans, 17, who was axed to death in October 1965.

A memorial to Keith Bennett and his mother, Winnie Johnson

Brady and Hindley were caught after Edward's murder and Lesley and John's bodies were recovered from the moor.

They were taken to Saddleworth Moor to help police find the remains of the other victims, but only Pauline's body was recovered.

Brady claimed he could not remember where he had buried Keith.

Brady was jailed for life at Chester Assizes in 1966 for the murders of John, Lesley Ann and Edward.

Hindley was convicted of killing Lesley Ann and Edward and shielding Brady after John's murder, and jailed for life.

In 1987 the pair finally admitted killing Keith and Pauline.
