New Zealand Creating a DeskTop ShortCut with Custom Icon for a JAR program.

Creating a DeskTop ShortCut with Custom Icon for a JAR program.
JAR program is a Java Runtime Environment Progam. Get It Here.

This Tutorial is based on a Win7 system so some of the directions may be a bit different to that of an XP system
although I don't believe that there will be any issues.
First DownLoad this Program from DTD1 so we are both on the same page:
Word WorkOut 1.2 - Game
Once you have DownLoaded the WordWorkOut.zip file you are ready to start the Tutorial
1. Navigate to the folder that you DownLoaded it into. Mine is "DownLoads\Programs\DTD1 Free Programs\Word WorkOut 1.2\". Yours might just be "DownLoads\Program or Compressed"

2. Right Mouse Click on the WordWorkOut.Zip file and slide the Mouse Pointer across and down to Extract Here then Left Mouse Click.

3. Once the File is Extracted you should see four (4) files. ReadMe.txt, WordWorkout.jar, WordWorkOut.zip and ww.ico.

4. Left Mouse Click on WordWorkout.jar (to select it) then Right Mouse Click on it and slide the Mouse Pointer across and down to Open with, then slide the Mouse Pointer across to your Archiver Program (mine is WinRAR) ...

... and Left Mouse Click on the Archiver Program. NOTE: If you have a look at the about Image again you will noticed that I already have the Java RunTime Platform program installed, so if you don't see this on your computer then you need to install JAR. Do that now and then come back to this point of the tutorial.
4.1. With the WordWorkout.jar file open for viewing you can see that there are many files that we don't really need to know about although there is one (1) file that may be important one day in the future and that is the ww.ico file (high-lighted in below image). If you ever need the ww.ico file and you have deleted the WordWorkOut.zip file and the extracted ww.ico file then you get grab and use this copy from with-in the JAR file by just selecting it and extracting it to the required folder.
5. Time to move the WordWorkout.jar file and the ww.ico file to the c:\Program_Files_(x86)\Word WordOut folder. While holding down the Ctrl key on the Keyboard, Left Mouse Click on the WordWorkout.jar file and then the ww.ico file. Now Release the Ctrl key. Both required files should now be high-lighted.

6. Slide your Mouse Pointer over to the Slide Bar and "Left Mouse Click and Hold" on the Slide Bar and while still Holding down the Left Mouse Button move your mouse so as to drag the Slide Bar down until you can see your Computer Icon.

7. You should notice that there is Little Black Arrow beside the Computer Folder Icon. Move your Mouse Pointer over to the Little Black Arrow and it should turn Blue in colour. Left Mouse Click on the now Blue (not Black) Little Arrow and you will notice two (2) things. Firstly (1st): You will see that the Word WorkOut folder contents are still visible on the screen with your Two files still High-Lighted and Secondly (2nd): You will see a listings of all Hard-Drives that are on your system, you may only have one or many like myself.

8. Slide your Mouse Pointer over to your C:\ Drive, mine is called Main Disc (C: ). When your Mouse Pointer is on top of the C:\ Drive Icon you should see a Little White Arrow. Slightly move your Mouse Pointer over to the Little White Arrow until you see the Arrow change to a Blueish colour.

9. Left Mouse Click on the Little Blue Arrow to expand your C:\ Drive and then slide your Mouse Pointer down to the Program Files (x86) Folder. You will see that the C:\ Drive Little Arrow is now Black and the other Folder Little Arrows are White. Slightly move your Mouse Pointer over to the Little White Arrow of Program Files (x86) until you see the Arrow change to a Blueish colour.

10. With the Little Arrow a Blueish colour, keep the Mouse still and do a Right Mouse Click on it to open an Options Menu. Slide your Mouse Pointer over and Down towards the bottom of the Options until you come across New, then slide across to Folder and Left Mouse Click on the word Folder.

11. Now do not worry about where your Mouse Pointer is, just type in the name Word WorkOut and then press the Enter Key on your KeyBoard.

12. To view the Newly Created Folder slide your Mouse Pointer across to the Slide Bar and once it is Blue in colour Hold Down the Left Mouse Button and Drag your mouse down until you can see the Word WorkOut Folder.

13. Once you can see the Word WorkOut folder move your Mouse Pointer over to the still High Lighted WordWorkout.jar file and WW.ICO file. Place your Mouse Pointer on One of them and then DePress and Hold down the Left Mouse Button and move the Mouse across to the Word WorkOut folder, Dragging the two (2) files with it.

14. When your Mouse Pointer is over the Word WorkOut folder, it will be high-lighted Blue, release the Left Mouse Button and the two (2) selected files will be moved from their older folder into their new folder. You may get an Error Message asking for Admin Permission to move to the new folder, just press Continue and the files should be moved.

15. With the two (2) required files moved into the desired folder it is time to create the ShortCut. Move your Mouse Pointer over to the WordWorkout.jar file and Right Mouse Click on it. Slide your Mouse Pointer down to the Create shortcut option.

16. Left Mouse Click on the Create Shortcut option. You should get an error message asking you if it is ok to place the Short Cut onto your DeskTop, just select Yes.

17. Move your Mouse Pointer to the newly created WordWorkOut - Shortcut icon on the DeskTop. Right Mouse Click on it and slide the Mouse Pointer down to Properities.

18. Left Mouse Click on Properties and then Move your Mouse Pointer to the Change Icon Button and Left Mouse Click on it.

19. Left Mouse Click on the Browse Button in the newly opened Change Icon Menu Box.

20. Move your Mouse Pointer up to your C:\ Drive button in the address box and then Left Mouse Click on it.

21. You should now see the Folder table of your C:\ Drive. Move your Mouse Pointer over to the Program Files (x86) folder and Double Left Mouse Click on it.

22. Use your Mouse to Slide the displayed Folder Table down so that you can see the Word WorkOut Folder. You may like to refer back to Item 12. Re: Slide Bar.

23. The view inside of the Word WorkOut folder will just show the ww.ico file. Left Mouse Button Click on it.

24. With the ww.ico file still Selected (coloured Blue) Move your Mouse Pointer over to the Open Button and Left Mouse Click on it.

25. There is only one (1) icon file there so just Left Mouse Click on the OK Button.

26. All of the opened dialog boxes will close and you should be back to the Shortcut Properties box. Left Mouse Click on the Apply Button.

27. The same Shortcut Properties box should still been seen but this time the Apply Button is Faded Out. Move the Mouse Pointer over to the OK Button and Left Mouse Click on it.

28. The Properties Box should now be closed. Let us change the WordWorkout Shortcut name. Move your Mouse Pointer over to the ww Icon and Left Mouse Click once and then once again. (Do not Double Click on it)

29. With the Shortcuts name high-lighted and regardless of where your Mouse Pointer is, type in Word WorkOut and press the Enter Key.

30. Now all you need to do is Double Left Mouse Click on the Newly Created and Re-Named Word WorkOut shortcut and you should be able to start playing your game :-)

31. If the game does not start up then you may have forgotten to install the Java Runtime Environment Progam. Get It Here.
