FireFox Help (Thread Moved)

odd problem i cant seem to find a solution to.

if im downloading a movie or any large file, and surfing the internet, everything runs perfectly fine.

If i close the internet browser which just leaves the download window open, when i reopen firefox to surf the net, it takes forever just to get the default home page, its impossible to do anything untill the download is complete or you cancel it, close firefox and reopen it.

any help would be mucho appreciated

Please tell me what add ons you have currently installed for firefox? it might help solve the problem.. also as a precaution.. delete your cookies and run a malware program..

Are you using Vista?

sorry i posted a msg and it said it had to be approved by a mod first.

and im running windows 7, and cable modem for the modem

bobo 19-04-11 22:41

Re: FireFox Help

I have seen a few others where Vista has this problem, so it would make sense that 7 has the same issues. If you press alt control and delete and enter task manager when this happens you might see that the computer still thinks FF is running. If you manually click on the FF line and pick close it should allow you to open FF again. This may or may not be the issue but it is something you can try.

Slimm 19-04-11 23:04

Re: FireFox Help

but if i manually close it, wont it close the download also which has to start over again from the beginning

bobo 19-04-11 23:07

Re: FireFox Help

You should see a separate line for the download. I'm guessing that this will solve the issue, best thing to do is try it just after you start the download and see if it works if it doesn't then stopping it early wont hurt much.

Slimm 19-04-11 23:18

Re: FireFox Help

ok just put a download on, closed firefox, opened firefox back up and its taking forever to load the homepage. goto task manager, its showing under Applications: firefox and firefox downloads

so i click the processes tab and theres only 1 firefox running, i click to end task and it closed both the browser and the downloads

so that didnt work but we know now

bobo 19-04-11 23:23

Re: FireFox Help

Thanks for the reply. I know a few people who dumped FF because of this similar type of issue.

Re: FireFox Help

i have no other complaints besides this ...wait i have 1 other complaint. when im downloading something. if the computer goes to screensaver, theres a 50/50 chance that the download fails

DigitalVoid 20-04-11 01:46

Re: FireFox Help

very common problem. you can ether down load a file manager like IDM or Set you screen saver to off or a higher time limit. I do know that with the updates on some of the add ons that there not compatible with firefox 4 and some even with firefox 3.
try this. with fire fox open click on tools-Addons-and try to uninstall the add ons or disable them also look in each one of the other tabs for any thing and do the same. Scripts also.. then restart and see how firefox runs.
firefox is a great browser but you have to be careful with what you install since most of the good stuff is unverified lol.

Re: FireFox Help

Like DigitalVoid says...... I use IDM and set it to download 50 or 100 links then shut down firefox and let it do its thing...... as for my screen saver, I do not have one but let the monitor go black and have never had an issue with the downloads..... always come out complete and working..

Good Luck

Re: FireFox Help

When I updated to FF 4 I also noticed delay and it is caused by a combination of factors some have been mentioned already about the add-ons and plugins.

One that has not been mentioned as yet is browser history, this along with many things such as bookmarks are stored in a sql database and I found that with FF 4 this needs a clean out or optimization to prevent file size becoming large, so I have my settings set for not keeping browser history and minimum cookies along with minimum offline cache

i couldnt think what to call it but its not a screensaver, more of the sleep mode what your talking about the goes black. thats how it is with mine. like i said 50/50 shot that the download will fail when the screen goes off.

I run vista and had the same thing as you and FF kept on crashing all the time as well, so I deleted the current FF I was using and reinstalled it and deleted some of those add ons that were suggested and everything is fine again, unless I don't clear my cache and cookies, Like I should to everyday.

If you try ccleaner its amazing how much XXXX ff keeps, so I wipe the whole things(clean it)

Great advice, as most problems are caused by issues with addons and also not having removed the leftover crap - I agree; ccleaner is an excellent cleaner.

Read this about the addons for FFox that will cause problems or slow your PC down.

FFox Addons

Mind you I accidently recently updated my FFox and Ive had nothing but probs with it since. Might be something to do with that
Also I have moved your thread into the Computer Help Section so the replies will help other members with the same problem ;) PM sent to confirm.

Re: FireFox Help (Thread Moved)

Since upgrading to version 4, there are a lot of similar problems posted all over the net.

One in particular is that the addon for Adobe Flash keeps crashing which is extremely common at the moment.

I hope all these new bugs will be sorted out with the next FF update so I suggest that we all keep checking for any updates for FF, but just as important, any updates for the addons which will make them more compatible and stable with the version 4.

I really hope they sort it soon as alot of my own addons have been disabled and are not compatible with version 4.

Good luck everyone.

Re: FireFox Help (Thread Moved)

I too have problems now with FFox. I dont have the 4 but the last update before downloaded onto my laptop whilst I was away and I normally cancel them. Now FFox wont remember my last tabs when it first starts in the day. I had this problem before and had to go back to an older version.
They are a damn pain, all competing with each other trying to outdo the other browsers and get their updates downloaded first and then never getting it or the older ones faults right first. Theres always problems!!

Do a test for me please have about 6 tabs open and close it down and then restart it and see if it saves your tabs, because I havent downloaded the latest update today that they offer for the 3.6.17, but the last update caused the problems with not saving tabs and doesnt give the normal message, Do you want to save tabs.

Thanks

Well last night it saved but didnt ask if I wanted to, then today I closed it and again no question to save and when I opened it again it hadnt saved, so FFox has yet another problem.

Hiya Ladybbird,

This is one of the really annoying problems I also have.

I found a Reason/solution why mine does this, maybe it also applies to you.

I went into:

Tools
Options
Tabs
click on button "Tab Mix Plus Option"...Version dependant, yours might be called something similar.- Tabs options maybe.
Put a tick in box labelled "use firefox built in session restore feature".
When it is ticked, it then reveals below it; a heading" when browser starts"
Underneath it, use the down arrow to choose " show my windows and tabs from last time "
Then click apply and then ok.
My setting was previously changed back to just show home page, I think an ff update removed all my personalized settings instead of remembering them.

I hope this works for you, and look forward to speaking with you soon. :)

Solved forgot to tell you guys thanks for reminding me Warlock.

Thanks for the help.

Re: FireFox Help (Thread Moved)

any idea how to get rid of the transparent top of firefox 4

Slimm 27-06-11 03:10

Re: FireFox Help (Thread Moved)

UPDATE. when you closed firefox with a download open and then tried to reopen firefox. it went terribly slow...well since they released firefox 5.0 upgraded to that and all problems fixed

Re: FireFox Help (Thread Moved)

FF 4.0 did suck ass and I have not upgraded past 3.6.16 yet... Its good to see you've had good results with the latest Firefox upgrade and will now read up on it and consider..

Cheers

Slimm 27-06-11 17:03

re: FireFox Help (Thread Moved)

yea, i havent had any problems so far, only thing i hate is the transparent border at the top of the browser

Ladybbird 27-06-11 21:28

re: FireFox Help (Thread Moved)

Im sticking with the same as you itisjust, any of the 3.6 range seem to be good. The 4 was full of probs

Slimm 27-06-11 22:27

re: FireFox Help (Thread Moved)

ok I found my first problem with FF5.0 i dont know if fileserve changed there page or its FF but say im going to download a movie from this site, i right click the link and choose "open link in new tab" when i click on slower download for non members, type the captcha in. it brings up a 30 sec countdown clock. usually i would go finish looking around and come back 30 seconds later to save the file. if you dont wait for the clock to countdown it stops till you come back. then starts counting down again

itisjust4fun 27-06-11 22:38

re: FireFox Help (Thread Moved)

I can't stand countdown clocks or the time limits/file restrictions for downloading and is why I have multiple premium accounts to the popular hosts...

This was the easiest solution for me, as I am very impatient :hissy:
