PhOtOs-Val Kilmer on Tracheostomy Tube>Throat Cancer?

PICTURED: Fears for Val Kilmer as He is Seen Wearing a Tracheostomy Tube After Reassuring Fans He is not battling Throat Cancer

  • Val has been wearing bandanas around his neck for a couple of months
  • Previously said he had received treatment for a 'complication'
  • Had a 'swelling' from a procedure which was 'not an operation on this area'
  • Assured fans in late October he is not battling throat cancer
Daily Mail UK, 4 December 2015

Movie star Val Kilmer was pictured with what appeared to be a breathing aid around his neck last week as he visited a grocery store in Malibu, California.

The 55-year-old actor was seen wearing the medical device - thought to be a tracheostomy tube - as he visited a local Trader Joe’s grocery store, where he did some shopping.
The outing follows Val's denial in October that he is battling throat cancer after rumours of ill health, although he did admit an undisclosed procedure had left him with a 'swelling'.

Health issue? Movie star Val Kilmer was pictured with a breathing aid around his neck last week as he visited a grocery store in Malibu

WHAT IS A TRACHEOSTOMY?

According to the UK's National Health Service website, a tracheostomy is a surgical opening in the wall of the trachea (windpipe) to facilitate ventilation.
The opening is usually maintained by use of a tracheostomy tube.

A tracheostomy may be created for a number of reasons - including to deliver oxygen to the lungs when a person is unable to breathe normally after an injury or accident.
Or it can be created because their muscles are very weak.

It can also allow a person to breathe if their throat is blocked - this can be caused by a swelling, a tumour, or something stuck in their throat and to reduce the risk of food or fluid going into the lungs.

The actor has been wearing a series of different coloured bandanas around his neck of late.
MailOnline has contacted a spokesperson for Val Kilmer for further comment.

Val, a father-of-two, cut a healthy looking figure as he headed out wearing casual clothing after taking to social media two months ago to deny reports that he is gravely ill in hospital.

Out and about: The 55-year-old actor was seen wearing the medical device as he visited a local Trader Joe’s grocery store

The post came following reports on Radar that he was admitted to UCLA's intensive care unit and could 'barely speak'.

He wrote: 'Thank you all for your love and support. There's a rumor I'm unwell again and in hospital which is totally untrue.
'I was in to verify I have no tumor or infection of any kind which was verified by the very caring experts at UCLA.'

This was the third time this year that Kilmer - a Christian Scientist - has denied he is suffering from cancer.

However, his most statement does concede that he has been undergoing tests for a tumor - something he initially denied when he was admitted to hospital coughing up blood back in January.
Back in January, his rep released a statement saying he was undergoing tests for a 'possible tumor' - but Kilmer insisted it was merely for a 'complication'.

The statement in January from his rep Liz Rosenberg read: 'Film actor Val Kilmer is currently undergoing tests at a Los Angeles Hospital for a possible tumor.

'The 55-year-old Kilmer is being cared for by his two children, Mercedes, 23, and son Jack, who is 19, both L.A. residents.

'According to a family friend and spokesperson, the doctors are encouraged by his progress and are hopeful that Mr. Kilmer will make a full recovery.'

Later, in a Facebook post, Kilmer clarified: 'I have not had a tumor, or a tumor operations, or any operation … I had a complication where the best way to receive care was to stay under the watchful eye of the UCLA ICU.'

He went on: 'Friends have assisted who know my spiritual convictions and have been most sensitive and kind for the extra effort in making sure there’s minimum gossip and silly talk.'

He is a Christian Scientist, and the faith advocates prayer for healing over surgery.

Denial: The star took to Facebook in October to tell his side of the story, saying he was in hospital to 'verify I have no tumor... which was verified by the very caring experts at UCLA'

Kilmer's family was 'upset' because they felt the actor had ignored health problems for a long time and 'allowed it to get worse'.

In June, Kilmer told fans he was 'perfectly well' after being pictured out covering his neck with a scarf and looking frail.

He wrote on Facebook: 'I am having a grand time. And I should mention I do not have cancer or a tumor.
'There has been a swelling that I have covered during this period of recovery from a procedure I had done which was not an operation on this area.'
