VIDEOs-American Sniper Killer Found Guilty=LIFE W.O. Parole

EXCLUSIVE: 'He'd Rather Take the Death Penalty Than Sit Behind Those Bars Forever.'
-Father of Veteran Who Killed American Sniper Chris Kyle Tells How he is Already Mourning the Loss of his own Son

  • Ex-Marine Eddie Ray Routh shot and killed Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield at a shooting range where they were trying to help him tackle his PTSD
  • Routh will go on trial in February shortly after full release of American Sniper, the movie tipped for Oscars which tells story of Kyle's life
  • Killer's father has told Dailymail.com how his son was struggling with PTSD and says scandal-plagued Veterans Affairs department let him down
  • Marine had served in Iraq but was traumatized by hurricane relief efforts in Haiti where he put hundreds of bodies into mass graves
  • If found guilty of murders he faces life without parole but has told his father he would rather die than be locked up forever
  • His family have written to Kyle and Littlefield's bereaved relatives to apologize for his actions
  • Marine's father, Raymond, says: 'We lost three people that day.'

Only the posture is the same - rigid back, shoulders squared, eyes front.
One is a young Marine, immaculate in his dress uniform, full of focus and promise. The other is a dead-eyed kid in an orange jumpsuit, posed up for a mugshot.

One is a hero. One is the killer of a hero.

Anguish: Raymond Routh is under no illusion that his son will ever be free again, saying that three families suffered loss when Eddie Ray shot Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield

Raymond Routh is under no illusion which version of his son Eddie Ray holds most prominence in the public conscience. It isn't the one displayed in the front room of his north Texas home.
On 2 February 2013 Eddie Ray Routh, 26, shot dead Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, 38, and Kyle's friend, father-of-one, Chad Littlefield, 35, at a shooting range near Chalk Mountain, Texas.
The SEAL with 160 confirmed kills and his friend were trying to help PTSD sufferer Routh assimilate to civilian life.

Now, shortly before the full release of 'American Sniper,' a movie already tipped for Oscars, Eddie Ray's father has broken his silence.

In an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com Mr Routh, 55, has told of the layers of guilt and grief that torment him and revealed that they have torn apart his marriage of 33 years.
He has shared his anguish for the families of Kyle and Littlefield; his conviction that their deaths could have been prevented had his son received adequate psychiatric from the Department of Veterans Affairs and his fear that the release of 'American Sniper' just three weeks before Eddie Ray stands trial will be his son's 'downfall' and ensure that justice will not be served.
He said:

'I am so sorry for the Kyles and the Littlefields. We wrote them letters of apology after it happened but you can't talk to them because there's anger, there's hurt. They want justice. How do I explain I want justice for my son too?'

Victim: Chad Littlefield, Chris Kyle's neighbor and workout buddy was shot shot and killed by Routh at the shooting range where he and the ex-SEAL were trying to help the veteran with his PTSD

Mentor: Chris Kyle, America's deadliest sniper, was trying to help Eddie Ray Routh with his PTSD after the ex-Marine's mother approached him to ask for help with his PTSD

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/...0049854386.jpg

Crime scene: Kyle and Chad Littlefield were found murdered at the gun range at the Rough Creek Lodge, Glen Rose, Texas. Eddie Ray Routh fled in Kyle's pick-up truck before turning himself in

Because, according to Mr Routh there were no villains on the shooting range that day - only victims.
He said:

'It ain't just their loss. We all lost. We lost three people that day.
'Whatever happens I'm pretty sure I've lost my son forever.'

There is a bleak inevitability in Mr Routh's assertion. Although prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty the only two outcomes are life without parole or life in a psychiatric ward.
Mr Routh knows that, if he had the choice, his son would choose the death penalty. He has told his father as much.
He said:

'When you've grown up like Eddie - in the woods, hunting and fishing, always being outside you don't want to be behind bars, you can't be.
'We don't talk about the trial; we don't talk about much like that. But I know he'd rather take the death penalty than sit behind those bars forever. He has said that.'

Memories: Raymond Routh keeps albums of pictures of a happy family life before his son suffered PTSD and killed Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield. This picture was taken a year after Eddie Ray became a Marine

For his father's part, Mr Routh clings to the hope that his son's sentence might somehow be a salvation of sorts.
He explained,

'I'm hoping for the best. I'm hoping to get him medical help. That's my main concern.'

Eddie Ray's decision to enlist was made the day terrorist planes flew into the Twin Towers in New York.
His father recalled,

'He came to me that day and said: 'I want to be a US Marine will you sign the papers for me?'
He was 16. His father signed him up for Junior Marines and told him if he wanted to progress to the real deal he'd have to graduate High School - a far from certain prospect at the time.
'He just didn't want to do his work and he had girls on his mind,' he said.

But with his military ambition came a newfound focus. Seven days after he graduated in 2006 he was in boot camp in San Diego.

Mr Routh treasures the pictures of the day he, his wife and Eddie Ray's sister, Laura, flew to San Diego to watch him pass out as a private the following summer.
In September 2007 he deployed to Iraq where he served as an armorer fixing weapons as well as guarding prisoners in Balad Air Base, just north of Baghdad.

Childhood: Eddie Ray Routh grew up in Texas, in a happy family

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/...0057753006.jpg

Focus: Eddie Ray Routh went on to join the Junior Marines and focus on his dream of serving in the Corps

An American flag, neatly folded and mounted in a wooden frame, hangs on the wall of Mr Routh's home.
Pointing to it he said:

'Ed flew that in Iraq on my wife's birthday and mine - I'm 31 October she's 30th October. So he flew that for us then he sent it home.'

Eddie's tour lasted two years. Then, at the beginning of 2010, he was dispatched along with thousands of other Marines to Haiti to help in the humanitarian efforts that followed the devastating earthquake that hit on 12 January.
Mr Routh said:

'It wasn't the same Ed who came back from that. He was different.
'He wasn't prepared for what he was doing out there - fishing hundreds of bodies - men, women, children - out of the ocean, piling them up and throwing them into mass graves.

Quote:

He just wouldn't talk, couldn't talk. Sometimes he would look okay then you could see he was back in the zone, in a sort of daze, like a deer in the headlights. He was back seeing whatever he had seen
Raymond Routh

'It was overwhelming. My son asked me "Why did they do this?" I told him it was to help stop disease.

'He had PTSD before he was off the ship. But 24 hours after he got back he was back at home. Just dumped. Just sitting on the porch.
'He just wouldn't talk, couldn't talk. Sometimes he would look okay then you could see he was back in the zone, in a sort of daze, like a deer in the headlights. He was back seeing whatever he had seen.'

Honorably discharged after reaching the rank of corporal, he returned home to Texas. But Eddie struggled to find and hold down jobs and his behavior became increasingly erratic.
Mr Routh said:

'He would be fine for a couple of weeks then he would just lose it.'

On one occasion, Mr Routh said, Eddie Ray and his mother were sitting on the back porch when the 'pop-pop-pop' of a nail gun from a neighbor fixing his roof saw Eddie Ray throw himself to the ground, as if under enemy fire in one of the mortar attacks he had experienced in Iraq.
According to Mr Routh he and his wife sought medical help from Dallas VA and Eddie was put on a plethora of medications - up to 11 at one point Mr Routh said.

'But they would give him drugs then say come back in a couple of weeks. They weren't seeing him, living with him, monitoring him. They didn't know what was going on.'

Outdoors: Eddie Ray Routh grew up with a love of the great outdoors. He has told his father that he would choose death over being in prison for life

Vacation: A family memento of downtime spent near his base at Camp Lejeune when he was serving in the Corps

Career: Eddie Ray Routh was given an honorable discharge from the USMC after serving for seven years. But after that

Memento: Raymond Routh keeps the dog tags which his son cherished as a Marine

The official diagnosis of PTSD didn't come until after a troubling episode that saw Eddie Ray hospitalized for three weeks in Dallas VA.
Mr Routh recalled,

'We were down at the lake. We'd been going down there since he was nine years old, hunting and fishing. We would go there ever weekend if we could get away with it.
'It was all good but I don't know, something triggered him and he was telling me he was Dracula, that he was a vampire and wanted to suck people's blood.

'He was talking just as calm as you and me talking now but he was gone, in his eyes he was gone. I had a .357 pistol and I pulled it away from him three times. He kept going for it and saying he would hurt himself.
'The third time I emptied all the bullets and threw them in the lake.'

Mr Routh took Eddie Ray to hospital and after a two-hour wait his son was admitted.

Mr Routh recalled, 'He asked me,

'Why aren't you scared of me? I'm a Marine?'
'I told him, 'I'm not scared of you because you're my son.'

But he was scared for him and, he said, scared he said for the absence of any support or consistent psychiatric care.
He claimed that on one occasion a doctor simply shut the door on him as he pressed for counseling for his son.

In the recent scandals that plagued the VA, the Dallas VA was singled out for particular criticism. According to the VA Inspector General, the paucity of care 'put lives at risk.'

The week after Eddie Ray shot dead Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield a letter from Dallas VA arrived at the Routh household informing Eddie that, two years after his diagnosis with crippling PTSD, the VA were finally recognizing his disability status. His first benefit check arrived a day later.
Mr Routh points to an official envelope sitting amid the clutter on the coffee table in the living room of the home in which he lives alone save for a terrier - a dog named 'Dog.'
He said:

'That's a check for him there. If he had had that the first year he could have paid for his own doctor. He could have got help.'

Instead, his father reflected, both he and wife Jodi, 57, spent the two years after Eddie Ray's honorable discharge trying to help their son cope with the PTSD, which, according to Mr Routh, was becoming more and more pronounced, and troubling.

Custody: Routh during a court appearance last year. He is still being treated for PTSD in prison and his trial will begin in February

Ultimately it was their efforts to help him that led directly to Chris Kyle.
Kyle himself had struggled to adapt to civilian life. In his autobiography he wrote of how he resented his wife, Taya, for giving him an ultimatum to leave the Forces or lose her and his family.
He began 'pounding back beers,' he became depressed. He was, he wrote, 'going downhill and gathering speed'. As a sniper he had the most kills in American military history. As a civilian who was he?
One way he sought to re-create a role for himself was in helping other veterans facing the same issues. He co-ran FITCO Cares, mentoring veterans, often through physical pursuits like hunts or trips or target training.

Kyle was local and he was well known. Jodi worked on the special-ed program at the Midlothian, Texas school which Kyle's children attended.
On 25 January 2013 she plucked up the courage to approach him in the school parking lot and tell him about her son Eddie Ray.
Mr Routh recalled,

'I was trying to get him into the Amarillo VA at the time. They have a good reputation but we were getting nowhere.
'My wife asked Chris Kyle that morning and asked him to help.

Apology: The Rouths have written a letter of apology to Chris Kyle's bereaved family. He was helping Eddie Ray Routh tackle PTSD after the Marine's mother approached him at his children's school, where she worked

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/...0050897896.jpg

In combat: Kyle and Routh both served in Iraq. Kyle became a wanted man for the Sunni insurgents he was targeting, had a price put on his head and was dubbed the Shaitan - devil - of Ramadi

Sienna Miller and Bradley Cooper star in American Sniper;

'Chris said he had some work to do right then but he would think about it and he would do what he could.
'A week later he called and all that went down.'
Sighing Mr Routh admitted, 'She has blamed herself. She's asked herself was it her fault? All she did was ask but she can't let that go, that question.'
Pausing he added, 'I ask myself, did I let my son down? Did I fail my son?'
Ultimately they could not reconcile their guilt and grief with themselves or each other. Thirty-three years after marrying the woman with whom he fell in love when he saw her across the street Mr Routh and Jodi are in the midst of divorce.
Eddie Ray is currently in jail in Erath County where the shootings took place. He is not in a psychiatric facility. He speaks to his father two or three times a week.
They talk about hunting and fishing. They don't talk about the past. They don't talk about the future. They are locked in a permanent present.
For Mr Routh just hearing his son's voice brings some relief from what he described as a 'Groundhog day' existence of anger, guilt, regret and grief.

Quote:

Every day I wake up, I make my coffee and I go to the window and I pray for some relief from this.If my son would have got killed in Iraq I could have had a closure. But we're living this day after day after day.
Raymond Routh

But he said: 'Every day I wake up, I make my coffee and I go to the window and I pray for some relief from this.
'If my son would have got killed in Iraq I could have had a closure. But we're living this day after day after day.'
Eddie Ray has been baptized in jail and, according to his father finds some solace in religion.
He said: 'I had a real hate for God for a while but I know it ain't God, it's the circumstances we're in.
'But how do you let it go and move forward? It don't ever go away.
'How can you send our people overseas to fight for us and see things nobody is ready to see and then not look after them when they get back?
'My son did a tragic thing. But there's something wrong with him.
'I don't know what the trial will bring. We can't know. But after it's done I don't want any other parent to be going through what we are. Does it have to take at a tragedy, a killing or a suicide for the VA to do something?'

You are welcome, I am here to serve you 'Massa' ..
......

Seriously though, after I watched the movie (posted on our site), I was quite upset to read that Hero Chris had been killed... so I researched it more and found the article I've posted in this thread

I agree with you it is a very sad situ for both families.

I do so hope that Chris's killer, Ex-Marine Eddie, is treated with kindness and compassion and receives the treatment that his family tried so very hard to get for him for so long, before this dreadful event happened.

If they had succeeded, then perhaps Chris and his friend Chad would still be alive

I totally blame the American Govt. for NOT looking after their returning 'Vets' properly.

I used to travel a lot, and travelled across the US for many years, and what I saw there and how the homeless(including ex-Vets), were treated .. appalled and angered me a bit....

i.e. One day, years ago, I was sitting having breakfast with one of my family, in a hotel in Denver, and a 'pushy' American woman and her nice husband, sat down at our table - Her reason? She had heard our accents and wished to talk to us. She asked;

"Are you enjoying your stay in our country?"

We explained we had visited it many times and had travelled across the US for weeks at a time for years, and thought it was very interesting and beautiful, but were shocked at the great poverty in many areas and the amount of homeless - and obviously injured ex-Vets, living either in make-shift tents/old vehicles, and some on the streets in cities....

She replied;

"Oh honey, they all just choose to live that way, they are just too damn lazy to work"

We couldn't finish eating, looked at each other and stood up without saying a word, and I replied to her in my crisp educated eloquent English accent,,, (loud enough, without shouting, so the other diners in the restaurant could hear);

"Please excuse us, but we have lost our appetite and no longer wish to listen to your comments that any family or ex Vet, would ever choose to be hungry and homeless... Good day madam"

As we were leaving the hotel restaurant, many people smiled at us and her husband followed us and apologised for his wife's comments and said her views were not his...
We shook his hand and thanked him, and wished him the best of luck living with a woman like that...But he did look so sad....

The sad story of the death of Chris Kyle and Chad, and circumstances surrounding it, refreshed my memory of that conversation in that hotel many years ago, although I never forgot it, - nor ever will....

Gee I could write a book eh Tarfoot? -wish I could find a good trustworthy 'Ghost Writer" to help me... money from that would certainly help me and some of our staff, that help pay the costs of keeping this site going, instead of the few great donating members like you, having to use your money to help us. :(

As I said Tarfoot, this dreadful story of the death of Chris and Chad, and Eddie and his family, really affected me....

Thank you for your reply, I have put it into my reminder to see/post Eddies' trial date and the outcome.. If I forget, and you have time, please post any updates you see in this thread.

In fact I have made it a sticky which means it will stay close to the top of the list in this section...ready for any updates...:)

+ Thank You Tarfoot for all your interesting threads in various sections. They certainly help me and the staff keep those Forums up to date on our Site > AND, they get more 'Hits' than any section does in any WAREZ section...:dunno:..that says it all, and maybe why this site is unique, what do you think?

Yep the US has a very shameful history of poor treatment of our vets. I have yet to understand how not only our government, but quiet a few of the very people our troops served during the Vietnam War were spat on when returning in the airports. Yes people literally spat on them. I myself did not ever serve in the military but would have if I had been drafted. We had the draft lottery when I was 18 yrs of age and my number was up in the 200's which made me safe from the draft. My daddy didn't raise no fool, so I wasn't about to join up for that war.
Even our Vet Hospitals have been much under the gun the past year for there failure to take care of our vets. Just plum shameful is all I can say and my tax dollars wasted.

Oh yes, but what is shown/reported in the media,,, is soooo different> they are all welcomed 'HOME' and all heros..right? ===
NOPE..

Kudos to your Daddy Tarfoot,,,

It's been nearly 2 decades since I last saw the hospitals that injured Vets were in.. and maybe 3-7 years since I last investigated if things had improved for Vets... they HAD NOT..AND so many were medicated to stop complaining about the mental and physical pain they were enduring..

Even our Vet Hospitals have been much under the gun the past year for there failure to take care of our vets. Just plum shameful is all I can say and my tax dollars wasted.

Well done to the person that FINALLY got the attention of the US media- so many have tried for so many years - BUT, the US media are controlled on what they can report - - even those in Press Conferences in the White House

Veteran was High on Pot and NOT Schizophrenic When he Shot Dead Chris Kyle, -says Prosecution Psychologist who Claims he Copied Insanity Plea from SEINFELD

  • Ex-marine Eddie Ray Routh charged with shooting 'American Sniper' author Chris Kyle and another man was not legally insane, says prosecution expert
  • Prosecution argued that Routh had a paranoid disorder made worse by his use of substances, calling his condition 'cannabis-induced psychosis'
  • Dr. Randall Price, a forensic psychologist, says he believes Routh may have gotten his idea to set the stage for insanity by watching Seinfeld
  • Routh faces mandatory life in prison without parole if convicted of capital murder, since prosecutors have said they are not seeking the death penalty
Daily Mail UK, 22 Feb 2015

An ex-Marine charged with shooting 'American Sniper' author Chris Kyle and another man was not legally insane, a prosecution expert said, suggesting the man may have gotten some of his ideas from the television show Seinfeld.
Prosecutors called rebuttal witnesses Friday in the trial of Eddie Ray Routh, who is charged with killing Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield. Routh's attorneys, who are pursuing an insanity defense, rested their case Thursday.

Dr. Randall Price, a forensic psychologist, testified Friday that Routh had a paranoid disorder made worse by his use of alcohol and marijuana, calling his condition 'cannabis-induced psychosis.'

Accused of murder: Eddie Ray Routh walks to his seat in court after a break during his capital murder trial on Friday in which he is trying to plea insanity

'In my opinion, he did know what he was doing was wrong, and he did it anyway,' Price said.

A defense witness, Dr. Mitchell H. Dunn, testified Thursday that Routh had schizophrenia and showed signs of the illness for as long as two years before the February 2013 shootings.
Dunn said Routh described seeing neighbors and friends as turning into pig-human hybrids.

Price repeatedly accused Routh of 'setting the stage' for an insanity defense.
He suggested Routh may have gotten the idea from 'Seinfeld' or the TV show 'Boss Hog.'
In a 'Seinfeld' episode, one character, Kramer, believes he has discovered a 'pig-man.'

'I don't know for a fact that he saw that episode of "Seinfeld" but I do know that he's watched "Boss Hog,'" Price said.
'For a long time, he's talked a lot about pigs to a lot of people. So it's suspicious.'

The defense: Defense attorney R. Shay Isham, leans in to listen to Eddie Ray Routh during his capital murder trial at the Erath County, Donald R. Jones Justice Center on Friday

He and another prosecution expert, Dr. Michael Arambula, said Routh's actions do not meet the legal definition of insanity under state criminal law.
'Any time intoxication is present, the game is over,' Arambula testified.

The 27-year-old Routh faces mandatory life in prison without parole if convicted of capital murder, since prosecutors have said they are not seeking the death penalty.
The jury can also find Routh not guilty by reason of insanity, in which case the trial judge can begin proceedings to have Routh committed.
Interest in the trial has been driven by the Oscar-nominated film based on Kyle's life. The movie ends with a depiction of Kyle meeting Routh, who he was taking to a gun range after Routh's mother asked Kyle to help her troubled son.

Routh's friends and family have testified that his behavior in the weeks before the shootings was increasingly erratic. They said he acted as if he believed that someone was going to hurt him and that the government was listening to him.

Kyle made more than 300 kills as a sniper for SEAL Team 3, according to his own count. After leaving the military, he volunteered with veterans facing mental health problems, often taking them shooting.

The prosecution is scheduled to continue its rebuttal case Monday, though State District Judge Jason Cashon a winter storm forecast for next week could force a delay.

Daily Mail UK, 26 Feb 2015

The family of Chad Littlefield, who was shot dead alongside famed U.S. Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle, has spoken out about their relief that the killer was found guilty of murder on Tuesday.Eddie Ray Routh, 27, was emotionless as the jury in Stephenville, Texas read their verdict last night: that he had not been insane when he opened fire on the two men in February 2013. They had taken him to a shooting range to help him settle back into society after he left the Marines. After the verdict, Littlefield's brother, Jerry Richardson, turned to Routh and said:

'You took the lives of two heroes, men that tried to be a friend to you. You became an American disgrace.'

As the family also spoke out on Wednesday morning, jurors stepped forward to say they had 'no doubt' that Routh knew what he was doing at the time of the murders.

Relief: The parents of victim Chad Littlefield, Judy and Don Littlefield, pictured right, and his brother-in-law Jerry Richardson, left, said the guilty verdict for his killer 'was an answered prayer'

The verdict came as interest in Kyle's career as the U.S. military's deadliest-ever sniper reached fever pitch thanks to Oscar-nominated film about his life, 'American Sniper'.Ahead of the trial, Routh's lawyers had argued that the popularity of the movie, which grossed $300 million at the box office, would mean he could not get a fair trial.

Speaking on Wednesday, the jurors admitted some of them had seen the movie - but insisted they had put that out of their minds when making their decision.

'It gave me a better outlook on Chris' role as a Marine,' one of the jurors, Barrett Hutchinson, said. 'But as far as the actions that took place on February 2, Chad was still in the picture and Chad was not in that movie.'I took the fact that Chris was a marine out of my mind and looked at him as a person, looked at Chad as a person, looked at Eddie as a person and, you know, tried to make reasonable judgment.'

Also on Wednesday, Chad Littlefield's family spoke out about the verdict.'It was an answered prayer,' Judy Littlefield told the Today show. 'We've waited a long time to hear that. We feel justice has been served.'

Beloved: Chad Littlefield, pictured above, was not a veteran but was committed to helping them when they returned from overseas, his parents said. He was shot dead by Routh in February 2013

Victim: Famed U.S. Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle, pictured with his wife Taya, was also shot dead by Routh. The two men had taken Routh to a shooting range to help him with his PTSD when they were killed

Routh's brother-in-law added that he never once believed Routh had been insane. Routh's attorneys had tried to prove he was in a psychotic state at the time of the killings.'It was all an act,' Jerry Richardson said.

'I taught him in high school and... that's just the way he was. He never grew up. He was still just opposite defiant, and he had nothing wrong in the mind except for the drug use.'

Chad's father Don remembered his son as a 'quiet man' and 'a good listener' who met Kyle at their children's soccer practices. The two men shared an interest in working out and helping veterans, Don said. Chad himself was not a veteran but wanted to help others.

'Chris served overseas and Chad served when they came back,' Mrs Littlefield explained. Mr Littlefield added: 'His motto was pass it forward.' Kyle's widow, Taya Kyle, testified in the trial but has not spoken out since the verdict. She was seen in the courtroom on Tuesday but did not return when the decision was read.

Chris Kyle's brother and parents were seen hugging and crying inside the courtroom after the verdict, but they did not issue a statement.

As prosecutors decided not to pursue the death penalty, the only possible sentence for Routh was life in prison - with no chance of parole.

Kyle and Littlefield had taken Routh to the shooting range at Rough Creek Lodge and Resort on February 2, 2013, after Routh's mother asked Kyle to help her troubled son.Family members say Routh suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder from serving in Iraq and in Haiti after the devastating 2010 earthquake.
Defense attorneys noted that Kyle had described Routh as 'straight-up nuts' in a text message to Littlefield as they drove to the luxury resort and asked Littlefield to watch his back.

While at the shooting range, Routh first opened fire on Littlefield, then turned on Kyle, whom he shot six times. He later said he was 'riled up' because Littlefield wasn't joining in with the shooting, then murdered Kyle too because he knew he would kill him. Psychiatrists for the defense also claimed Routh believed the men were human-pig hybrids who were going to assassinate him.

Families: Deby Kyle, Chris Kyle's mother is seen leaving the courtroom after the verdict, alongside Judy and Don Littlefield, whose son Chris was killed at the same time

After shooting the men dead, he fled in Kyle's pickup truck, drove to see family members and even stopped at Taco Bell. He was eventually arrested after a police chase and later confessed to the crime on video, which was played to the jury.

Among evidence entered by prosecutors was a recorded phone call between Routh and a reporter in which Routh said he was annoyed Littlefield wasn't shooting.

'Are you gonna shoot? Are you gonna shoot? It's a shooting sport. You shoot,' Routh said in the phone call. 'That's what got me all riled up.'

Routh's friends and family testified that his behavior in the weeks before the shootings was increasingly erratic and that 'he did not seem all there' after gunning down the two men.
Routh, who served with the Marines in Iraq and Haiti, had been admitted to Veterans Affairs hospitals on multiple occasions after his service to treat mental illness.

They said he was unable to care for himself, acted as if he believed that someone was going to hurt him and thought that the government was listening to him.

Caught: Routh is pictured in the back of a police car after he fled the scene of the murder in Kyle's truck before he was eventually caught. He claimed he shot the two men because he feared they would kill him

Confession: Routh, pictured hours after the killings, confessed to the shootings almost immediately

'It was clear that he was psychotic,' Mitchell H. Dunn, a forensic psychiatrist for the defense, told the court on Thursday. 'There was no question about that.'

But the jury rejected the claim after prosecutors contended Routh knew what he was doing and acted deliberately when he shot the two and then fled.
They said any bizarre behavior was the result of Routh's reliance on marijuana. He had smoked the drug with his uncle the morning before the shootings.

A prosecution expert, Dr. Michael Arambula, said Routh's actions do not meet the legal definition of insanity under state criminal law.

'Any time intoxication is present, the game is over,' Arambula testified.

THE AMERICAN SNIPER TRIAL'S FORGOTTEN VICTIM: CHAD LITTLEFIELD

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/...4842381639.jpg

Chad Littlefield, then 35, was killed in 2013 along with his more famous friend Chris Kyle

The case of Eddie Ray Routh has been dubbed the 'American Sniper' trial after its most famous victim, author and US Navy SEAL Chris Kyle.
However the other casualty of that February day at a Texas shooting range was Chad Littlefield, Kyle's devout friend who also helped out with the sniper's charitable foundation.
He was trying to help smooth Routh's transition to civilian life when he was shot , age 35.

Born in Dallas in 1977, he graduated from DeSoto High School in 1995.
The father was devoted to his wife LeAnn, daughter Morgan, now nine, and Christianity.
Though he did not serve in the military, he was passionate about helping veterans with Kyle, who he met through their daughters soccer team.
He had visited his parents the day before his death, and spent extra time at their house that day.

'Mom, life is so good it's scary,' he told mother Judy that day

He was working for an oil-services firm in DeSoto as a logistics manager and was known as the peacekeeper in his family, always urging relatives to talk through their conflicts.
The charity volunteer hugged his parents right before he said goodbye to them for the last time.
His parents gave a statement to reporters after Routh was convicted of their son's murder.

'We've waited two years for god to get justice for us on behalf of our son, Chad's mother Judy said.
'We're so thrilled that we have the verdict we have tonight.'

Littlefield's father Don, a high school football coach, confronted Routh, who said he did not remember Chad's name, after the trial.

He said 'You will have the rest of your wasted life, each and every day, to remember his name. Let me remind you. His name was Chad Littlefield.'

Littlefield would have turned 38 on February 11.
