Music Today`s History in Rock (April 20)

Featuring “Rope” and “Walk,” “Wasting Light,” the Foo Fighters’ seventh album, is their first #1 album in the U.S. 2011

1940's

Organist Craig Frost is born in Flint, MI. A late arrival to Grand Funk Railroad (well after they were famous and basically added to augment their sound), Frost later joins Bob Seger's Silver Bullet Band. 1948

1950's

Elvis Presley’s "All Shook Up," written by Otis Blackwell (who also composed "Don’t Be Cruel"), starts an eight week run at #1. 1957

1960's

The long decline begins as Elvis, out of the Army, returns to Hollywood to film “G.I. Blues." 1960

Deep Purple plays their first concert in Tastrump, Denmark. Deep Purple (Mark I) features the core group of Ian Paice (drums), John Lord (organ) and Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), along with Rod Evans (vocals) and Nicky Simper (bass). 1968

1970's

The Rolling Stones release their “Black and Blue” album. The most interesting and controversial thing about the album is the cover that features a “battered and bruised” model in bondage. 1976

1990's

Small Faces and Humble Pie guitarist Steve Marriott dies in a house fire. He is 44. 1991

A Concert For Life, celebrating the life of Queen’s Freddie Mercury, is held in London. Metallica, Def Leppard and Guns N’ Roses perform. Also, Queen’s surviving members back David Bowie, Robert Plant and Roger Daltrey for a set of Queen songs. 1992

Drummer Tony McCaroll gets into a serious fracas with the Gallagher Brothers (that would be Noel and Liam). He is fired from Oasis six days later. 1995

2000's

Drowning Pool release their sophomore LP "Desensitized." It`s their first album with vocalist Jason "Gong" Jones who replaced late singer Dave Williams. 2004

Queens Of The Stone Age issues a special limited edition EP “Stone Age Complication” featuring B-sides and two QOTSA originals. Only 25,000 copies are available at select retail outlets. 2004

It`s an election year. The 26-track “Rock Against Bush Vol. 1 CD/DVD” compilation is released. The Offspring and Ministry are among the bands contributing songs. Meanwhile, U2 frontman Bono makes “Time” magazine`s 2004 list of the 100 most influential people. He also praises Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin for showing ``real political guts`` in the global war on AIDS. 2004

Early AC/DC bassist Mark Evans is hospitalized for a day with neck injuries following a car accident in Sydney, Australia. 2004

Scott Putesky, a.k.a. Daisy Berkowitz, releases "Lunch Boxes & Choklit Cows," a collection of recordings made in the early `90s when Marilyn Manson was known as The Spooky Kids. Putesky left the band in `96. 2004

Former Pink Floyd guitarist, David Gilmour, performs the title track from his solo release "On An Island" on NBC's Tonight Show With Jay Leno. 2006

Bob Dylan wins the DVD of the Year trophy for the Martin Scorsese-directed No Direction Home documentary at the sixth annual Jammy Awards in New York. 2006

Bob Seger cleans up at the 2007 Detroit Music Awards (how could he not?). "Face The Promise" takes home the Outstanding National Major Label Recording prize, while the song "Wait for Me" and its accompanying video also earn honors. 2007

Guitars played by Eric Clapton's (including his famous "Blackie"), Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana are displayed at the Holy Grail Guitar Exhibition in Dallas. It's part of the 30th annual Dallas International Guitar Festival. 2007

Fuel says Toryn Green, former frontman of the Los Angeles band Something To Burn, is their lead singer. He replaces Brett Scallions, who departed the previous year. 1,000 audition tapes were sent to the band by singers vying for the spot. Also, former Godsmack drummer Tommy Stewart joins Fuel's lineup for the band's spring/summer tour. 2007

"Know Your Enemy" the first single from Green Day's "21st Century Breakdown" album goes to radio. Rolling Stone describes the track as "a straight-ahead Rock song with a chanty 'oh-way-oh-way' refrain." 2009

Saliva bails once again on the SnoCore Tour. Vocalist Josey Scott, recovering from a ulcer operation, was temporarily replaced by Silvertide’s Scott Lafty. But after only a couple shows, the band throws in the towel. "After much thought and consideration . . . the decision not to appear was made in the interest of the fans," Saliva announces in a MySpace post. 2009

2010's

First there was an 8-week debut in Berkeley (Berkeley Rep) and then preview performances in New York. Finally, the stage musical version of Green Day’s American Idiot opens on Broadway at the St. James Theatre. 2010

After surviving the Dead of Winter Tour with Motley Crue and the Joe Perry Project, Airbourne issue their sophomore album, “No Guts, No Glory,” on Roadrunner Records. 2010

Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins releases “Red Light Fever,” the second release from his side project, Taylor Hawkins And The Coattail Riders. The set features contributions from The Cars' Elliot Easton, Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen and Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl. 2010

The Revolver Golden Gods Awards show is held at L.A.'s Club Nokia. Avenged Sevenfold take home the Album of the Year trophy (presented by Jerry Cantrell and Mike Inez of Alice In Chains). The band’s M. Shadows earns the Best Vocalist Award. Alice Cooper picks up the Golden God honor. 2011

Judas Priest announces that guitarist K.K. Downing has left the band after 42 years. They name 31-year-old Richie Faulkner as Downing’s replacement for their upcoming Epitaph tour. 2011

Kid Rock makes a surprise visit to Romeo High School, his old stomping ground, and presents the music program with a donation of $5,000. He appears at the end of the Detroit area school's Get Up and Get Moving pep assembly. Rock’s donation is matched by a contribution from Best Buy Mobile and the Grammy Foundation. 2011

The Beastie Boys' Fight For Your Right Revisited premieres on VH1. Directed by Beastie Boy Adam Yauch, the short film is about the group's ’87 Rap/Rock anthem "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)." 2011

Elton John performs during the opening night of the Tribeca Film Festival. There is a screening Cameron Crowe's documentary The Union, which features John and Leon Russell, followed by a live performance. "To have Elton, whose music transcends generations, perform after is an extraordinary gift to our festival," says Jane Rosenthal, the festival's co-founder, in a statement. 2011

The Grateful Dead: The Epic Tour online video game is out. It is based on 10 especially memorable Dead shows staged between ‘70 and ‘90. "What we're doing is creating an adventure by traveling through Grateful Dead history, Grateful Dead time and space…," states Adam Blumenthal of Curious Sense, the digital media company that created The Epic Tour. "The objective is to keep having fun rather than get to the end." 2012

Record Store Day, with Jack White as the ‘13 ambassador, features special items to lure music fans to record stores. David Bowie, Black Keys, Iggy & the Stooges, Linkin Park, Deftones and Avenged Sevenfold offer special releases. 2013

Kings Of Chaos, featuring three Guns N’ Roses vets - drummer Matt Sorum, bassist Duff McKagen and guitarist Gilby Clarke - make their live debut at the Stone Music Festival in Sydney. 2013
