John Lennon, the Beatle to be tried on drug charges, is convicted of possesion of cannabis and fined $360 in London. The court accepts his explanation that he no longer uses marijuana and that the amount found in his possession was an old, forgetten stash. Jerry Lee Lewis shoots his bass player, Norman "Butch" Owens, twice in the chest while trying to hit a soda bottle. Lewis is charged with shooting a firearm within the city limits. (1976)

Kansas, riding the crest of popularity forged by the 1976 hit "Carry on Wayward Son," enjoys their biggest album to date, "Point of Know Return," which goes platinum. (1977)

Guitarist George Harrison passed away at age 58 while resting at a friend's home in Los Angeles. The news came as somewhat of a shock to the world, despite Harrison's much-chronicled cancer treatments throughout the year. Harrison left this world peacefully, according to those close to him and it's safe to bet he viewed death with the same zen-like perspective he carried throughout his life. (2001).
