Singer Chubby Checker is born. (1941)

A ten year old Elvis Presley makes his first public appearance in a talent show at the Mississippi-Alabama Dairy Show singing "Old Shep." He won 2nd place and 5 dollars. (1945)

Lindsay Buckingham, guitarist and vocalist for Fleetwood Mac, is born. (1947)

Guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughn is born. (1954)

Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee is born. (1961)

The Supremes' "Baby Love" enters the Hot 100. It stays on the charts for thirteen week becoming their second Number One release in a row. (1964)

The Animals' self-titled album enters the LP chart. It contains their #1 hit, "House Of The Rising Sun." (1964)

Folk singer/songwriter Woody Guthrie dies in New York at the age of 55. Guthrie had spent the last decade of his life in the hospital, suffering from Huntington's disease. (1967)

Former Cream bassist Jack Bruce joins ex-Miles Davis sidemen John McLaughlin, Larry Young and Tony Williams to form one of the first jazz-rock fusion groups, Lifetime. (1970)

Van Halen told David Lee Roth to go ahead and jump, again!!! The band and Roth had gotten back together in June after an 11 year separation...Roth recorded a couple of songs for the groups greatest hits package, and then was given his walking papers...Roth was the second lead singer to depart the band this year...Sammy Hagar was booted in June. Roth faxes an open letter to the press saying his appearance on MTV with the band was a publicity stunt orchestrated by the band and that the other members had no intentions of letting him back in.
