1. The Hunger Games

In a dystopian future, the totalitarian nation of Panem is divided between 12 districts and the Capitol. Each year two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal retribution for a past rebellion, the televised games are broadcast throughout Panem. The 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors while the citizens of Panem are required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss's young sister, Prim, is selected as District 12's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart Peeta, are pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives.

Weekend Report: Disappointing Debuts for 'Paranormal 4,' 'Alex Cross'

by Ray Subers October 21, 2012

Paranormal Activity 4

Paranormal Activity 4 took first place at the box office this weekend, though its comparatively underwhelming gross suggests audiences are growing tired of the perennial horror franchise. Alex Cross also missed the mark, though overall box office was still up at least 10 percent thanks to impressive holdover business from Argo and Hotel Transylvania.

The fourth installment in the Paranormal Activity scared up an estimated $30.2 million from 3,412 locations this weekend. For any other low-budget horror movie, this would be a fantastic start, but this franchise has established a track record, and with that track record comes expectations. On this same weekend last year, Paranormal Activity 3 set an October opening record with $52.6 million, while Paranormal Activity 2 debuted to $40.7 million the year before.

Of course, Paramount is still going to make truckloads of money on this movie, and a fifth installment is apparently on the way for next year. Still, without a miraculous second weekend hold (unlikely, given the movie's awful "C" CinemaScore) this is destined to be easily the lowest-grossing Paranormal Activity movie yet, which has to be disappointing.

The audience was split evenly between men and women, and skewed a bit younger (60 percent under the age of 25). The 286 IMAX locations only contributed six percent (around $1.8 million), which is a poor result for the large-format exhibitor.

In second place, Argo eased just 15 percent to an estimated $16.63 million. That's the best hold ever for a live-action movie in over 3,000 theaters that's released outside of November and December (when holiday weekends skew results). Also, after opening below Ben Affleck's The Town last weekend, Argo topped The Town in its second outing. Through 10 days, the Iranian hostage crisis thriller has earned $43.2 million, and it should have another great weekend coming up before facing stiff competition from Flight and Skyfall in early November.

Hotel Transylvania also had a great hold: the animated hit dipped 22 percent to an estimated $13.5 million for a new total of $119 million. It's poised to eclipse Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs ($124.9 million) by Friday, and it's still on pace to beat The Smurfs ($142.6 million) to become Sony Picture Animation's highest-grossing movie ever.

After falling hard in its second weekend, Taken 2 bounced back with $13.4 million this weekend, which is off just 39 percent. The action sequel has so far grossed $106 million, and while it's not going to match its predecessor's $145 million, it's still going to come a lot closer than pretty much anyone would have expected a few months ago. Add in impressive overseas grosses ($174 million and counting), and Liam Neesonis surely being courted for Taken 3 right now.

In fifth place, Alex Cross opened to a disappointing $11.75 million from 2,539 locations. That's the worst opening ever for a movie starring Tyler Perry, and second-worst for a movie he's associated with behind Daddy's Little Girls ($11.2 million), which burned off some demand with a Wednesday opening. The debut is also lower than previous Alex Cross movies Kiss the Girls ($13.2 million) and Along Came a Spider ($16.7 million), even though those movies each were released over a decade ago.

The demographics tell a big part of the story here. The audience was 60 percent women, 68 percent over the age of 35, and 74 percent African American, all of which aligns with the typical Tyler Perry crowd. This suggests that Perry fans made up a large portion of moviegoers, while the legions of fans of the character Alex Cross and author James Patterson opted to skip the movie.

Sinister fell 50 percent to an estimated $9.03 million this weekend. That's not a good hold, but it also could have been much worse given the genre and the direct competition from Paranormal Activity 4. Through 10 days, the movie has earned $31.95 million.

Similar to many of the holdovers in the Top 12, Here Comes the Boom and Seven Psychopaths both retained a large portion of their audience. The Kevin James comedy dipped 28 percent to $8.5 million for a new total of $23.2 million, while Seven Psychopaths eased 21 percent to $3.3 million for a 10-day gross of $9.19 million (more than the entire run for In Bruges). Even with these great holds, though, both of these movies are still major disappointments.

Weekend Report: `Argo` Ahead of Four Dreadful Debuts.

Four new nationwide releases all underperformed this weekend, which allowed Argo to move up to first place in its third outing. Overall business was fairly quiet, with the Top 12 off 12 percent from last year with an estimated $82 million.

It's hard to gauge the actual impact of Hurricane Sandy, which is about to bear down on the East Coast. At worst, Sandy may have suppressed business by about 10 percent (for example, that would put Paranormal Activity 4's drop in line with Paranormal Activity 3), though it's impossible to say for sure. One thing that wasn't affected, at least, was the Saturday-to-Sunday drops: studios are estimating that the Top 10 will dip 42 percent from Saturday to Sunday, compared with 47 percent last weekend.

Argo eased 25 percent to an estimated $12.36 million in its third weekend. It's the first movie since True Grit to claim the top spot for the first time on its third frame. That's partly due to the movie's strong word-of-mouth, but incredibly weak competition also played a major role. Through 17 days, Argo has earned $60.8 million, which is off from The Town by just over $3 million.

Hotel Transylvania jumped from fourth place last weekend up to second place this weekend with $9.5 million (down 27 percent). The movie has now grossed $130.4 million, making it Sony Pictures Animation's top animated-only movie ahead of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs ($124.9 million). It will eventually become SPA's top movie overall ahead of The Smurfs ($142.6 million), though it's going to get hit hard by Wreck-It Ralph this coming weekend.

Cloud Atlas had the highest debut among this weekend's newcomers with an estimated $9.4 million from 2,008 theaters. That's the lowest nationwide launch ever for the Wachowski siblings (who co-directed with Tom Tykwer), and it's also the worst nationwide opening for star Tom Hanks since 1996's That Thing You Do! At least the movie nearly matched The Fountain's $10.1 million total, though that's really not a ringing endorsement.

This is a disappointing, but not surprising, opening for Cloud Atlas. With six thinly-connected stories set in different time periods, the marketing was never able to convey an actual story, which is the most fundamental part of selling a movie. The insane runtime (164 minutes) was also likely a deterrent for casual moviegoers, while the middling reviews (62 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) weren't good enough to convince cinephiles to check it out. The movie could save some face overseas, where its strong visuals and internationally recognizable cast will help a lot, but it's still going to be a long road to profitability for this $100 million epic.

Warner Bros. reported that the audience was split about evenly between men (51 percent) and women, and skewed much older (77 percent over 25). They gave the movie a "C+" CinemaScore, which isn't shocking given the more challenging nature of the movie. IMAX contributed $1.13 million (or around 12 percent) from 105 locations.

Paranormal Activity 4 plummeted 70 percent to an estimated $8.68 million in its second weekend. That's the worst drop so far in the franchise behind Paranormal Activity 3's 66 percent. Through 10 days, the horror sequel has only earned $42.6 million, which is $10 million less than Paranormal Activity 3's opening weekend alone.

Fifth place was a tie between Taken 2 and Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, both of which reported earning an estimated $8 million this weekend. For Taken 2, that brings its total to $117.4 million through four weekends, which is ahead of its predecessor by over $22 million.

Silent Hill, on the other hand, doesn't look so good compared to its predecessor, as its $8 million opening was off 60 percent from the first movie's $20.15 million. Blame that on the schlocky feel, the decreased relevance of the franchise (Can anyone recall seeing an ad for a Silent Hill game on TV in the past five years?) and competition from two other interesting horror choices (Paranormal Activity 4 and Sinister) over Halloween weekend. Distributor Open Road Entertainment is reporting that the movie received a "C" CinemaScore, and that 74 percent of revenue came from 3D showings.

In 10th place, Fun Size bombed with just $4.06 million at 3,014 theaters. That's lower than similar movie I Love You Beth Cooper ($4.9 million), and also marks a new low for a Nickelodeon movie behind Hey Arnold! The Movie ($5.7 million). Paramount is reporting that moviegoers were 67 percent female and 73 percent under the age of 25, and they gave the movie a fine "B" CinemaScore.

The worst debut of the weekend belongs to surfing drama Chasing Mavericks, which opened in 13th place with just $2.2 million. That's the ninth-worst debut ever in over 2,000 locations, and it's the second disastrous Fox/Walden Media movie in the past month following Won't Back Down ($2.6 million). The crowd was split evenly between men and women, and skewed a bit older (59 percent above 25). Its "B+" CinemaScore was the best among new releases this weekend, but it still won't get much past $5 million before it disappears from theaters.

Box Office Report: `Wreck-It Ralph`Opens to Record $49 Mil, `Flight` Strong No. 2

New family film Wreck-It Ralph opened to a record-breaking $49.1 million from 3,752 theaters -- the top weekend debut for a Disney Animation Studios title. Disney Animation's Tangled, opening over the Thanksgiving holiday in 2010, posted a weekend gross of $48.8 million (the film, opening on a Wednesday, grossed a total of $68.6 million in its first five days).Wreck-It Ralph did especially well on Friday in the Northeast, where families looked for a distraction from the aftermath of superstorm Sandy. Most of the 300 theaters closed early last week because of Sandy were back in business by the weekend. Moviegoing for the weekend on the East Coast was solid, but not spectacular. Still, box office grosses nationwide were up 23 percent over a year ago, when Puss in Boots debuted to $34.1 million.»

6. Here Comes The Boom

7. Cloud Atlas

8. Pitch Perfect

9. The Man With The Iron Fists

Box Office Report: `Skyfall`Scores Best Bond Debut Ever

After doing tremendous business overseas in the past two weeks, Skyfall
definitely did not disappoint in its domestic debut this weekend. The 23rd James Bond movie scored an outstanding $87.8 million, which is a new opening weekend record for the 50-year-old franchise. This helped push the Top 12 to an estimated $162.6 million, which is up 29 percent over the same period last year.

Skyfall's opening crushed Quantum of Solace's $67.5 million, which was the previous Bond record. It was also double Casino Royale's $40.8 million debut, which was star Daniel Craig`s first outing as the infamous spy. The debut ranks fourth on the year behind The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and The Hunger Games, and it ranks seventh all-time in November behind two Twilight movies and four Harry Potter flicks. Including $2.2 million from Thursday's IMAX/premium-large-format showings, the movie has already earned $90 million total.

Skyfall was always poised to have an impressive debut thanks to the strength of the Bond brand, but the fact that it so handily set the record is due to a number of factors unique to this entry. First, and perhaps most importantly, Daniel Craig is James Bond to most audiences at this point thanks to Casino Royale's ongoing legacy and reinforced by a clever London Olympics opening ceremony cameo seen by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Additionally, the four-year wait in between movies and the buzz surrounding the 50th anniversary of the character helped to make this feel like more of an event than usual. The enthusiastic reviews ("Best Bond Ever" was a popular one) and Adele's popular theme song helped in the final push as well.

The movie earned a very good $13.1 million, or 15 percent of the four-day haul, from IMAX presentations. The audience was 60 percent male and 75 percent were 25 years of age or older; in comparison, only 58 percent of Quantum's audience was over 25, which suggests that long-time Bond fans made it out at abnormally-high rates for Skyfall.

With the audience skewing older and awarding the movie an "A" CinemaScore, Skyfall is on track for a ton of success in the next few weeks. It's guaranteed to earn over $200 million at the domestic box office, and $250 million doesn't really seem like a stretch either.

In second place, last weekend's winner Wreck-It Ralph eased 33 percent to an estimated $33.1 million. That drop is a bit better than 2010's Megamind (37 percent), and the $93.7 million 10-day total is also up on Megamind's $88.8 million.

Flight fell 39 percent to an estimated $15.1 million in its second outing. Its $47.8 million total is noticeably higher than Denzel Washington's 2010 thriller Unstoppable ($41.9 million) through the same point, and that movie wound up earning over $81 million.

In its fifth weekend, Argo had its steepest drop yet. The Ben Affleck-directed thriller fell 35 percent to an estimated $6.7 million, for a new total of $85.7 million. In comparison, The Town was at $80.5 million through a month in theaters.

Taken 2 rounded out the Top Five with an estimated $4 million, which is only off 33 percent from last weekend. That's a remarkable hold given the direct and overwhelming competition from Skyfall. The action sequel has so far earned $131.3 million, and has a legitimate shot at coming very close to its predecessor's $145 million total.

In 15th place, Steven Spielberg's Lincoln debuted to an estimated $900,000 at 11 locations. That translates to an $81,818 per-theater average, which is second-best ever for a movie in more than 10 locations (behind Precious). It's also third-highest in 2012 behind The Master and Moonrise Kingdom. The historical drama's audience skewed male (55 percent) and much older (67 percent over the age of 35), and they awarded the movie a great "A" CinemaScore. The real test, though, comes next weekend when Lincoln attempts to reach mainstream crowds in at least 1,500 theaters.

Box Office Report: 'Breaking Dawn' Ends 'Twilight' Franchise on Strong Note

by Ray Subers
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2

The fifth and final Twilight movie opened to an outstanding $141.3 million this weekend, though that wasn't quite enough to set a new record for the popular franchise. Meanwhile, Skyfall had another strong weekend and Lincoln over-performed in its nationwide debut; as a result, the Top 12 earned around $237 million, which makes this the sixth-highest-grossing weekend ever.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2's estimated $141.3 million ranks eighth all-time and fourth in 2012 behind The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and The Hunger Games. Among Twilight movies, it wound up slightly ahead of predecessor Breaking Dawn Part 1 ($138.1 million), but a tad below New Moon's franchise-best $142.8 million. This makes Twilight the first franchise ever to have three movies earn over $130 million in their first three days.

While this is undeniably a fantastic debut, there's a nagging feeling it should have done slightly better given the movie's finale status; past franchise finales like The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Star Wars: Episode III -Revenge of the Sith easily had the best debuts for their series. At least Twilight didn't see much, if any, audience attrition, which is a rare thing for most franchises.

There are a few indications that Breaking Dawn Part 2 could hang on a bit better than its predecessors. First, its Friday-to-Saturday drop (42 percent) was a slight improvement over Breaking Dawn Part 1 (44 percent). More importantly, it received the best exit polling so far for a Twilight movie, and its "A" CinemaScore ("A+" among those under 25) suggests word-of-mouth will be solid. Ultimately, the movie should earn at least $280 million and could wind up around $300 million.

The audience was 79 female and 21 percent male (highest male share of the franchise so far), and it was split evenly between those above and below 25 years of age.

On Friday, Lionsgate/Summit passed the $1 billion mark for the first time in the company's history, and is now at over $1.1 billion. For 2012, it's going to finish ahead of 20th Century Fox and Paramount, both of which are part of the traditional "Big Six" studios.

In its second outing, Skyfall fell 53 percent to an estimated $41.5 million. In comparison, Quantum of Solace fell 60 percent in its second weekend. Through 10 days, Skyfall has earned $161.3 million, and by Wednesday it will pass Quantum's $168.4 million to become the highest-grossing Bond movie ever. Also, using Quantum's pattern, there's a good chance Skyfall winds up with $250 million by the end of its run.

Steven Spielberg's Lincoln expanded to 1,775 locations this weekend and earned an excellent $21 million. That's easily the best start ever for a narrative feature about a real-life president ahead of Oliver Stone's 2008 movie W. ($10.5 million). It's also noticeably higher than Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter's $16.3 million. With great reviews, plenty of awards buzz, strong word-of-mouth ("A" CinemaScore) and an audience that skews older (67 percent over 35 years of age), Lincoln should be on track for a very healthy run at the box office.

In fourth place, Wreck-It Ralph dropped 45 percent to an estimated $18.3 million. The animated hit has now grossed $121.5 million, and even with direct competition from Rise of the Guardians on Wednesday it's still in line for at least $150 million by the end of its run.

Rounding out the Top Five, Flight fell 42 percent to an estimated $8.6 million. Through 17 days, the Denzel Washington addiction drama has grossed $61.3 million.

Opening at 16 locations, Silver Linings Playbook scored an estimated $458,000. In comparison, writer-director David O. Russell's last movie, The Fighter, earned $300,010 from just four theaters in its first frame. Aside from tough competition for adult audiences from Skyfall and Lincoln, Silver Linings was also likely hurt by The Weinstein Company's last minute decision to add these playdates, which makes it more difficult to properly raise awareness and book the best screens and the most showtimes. The well-reviewed romantic comedy expands to around 420 theaters on Wednesday.

Anna Karenina also debuted at 16 theaters but only earned an estimated $315,000. It's per-theater average was $19,688; director Joe Wright's Atonement had a higher average at twice as many locations when it opened in December 2007.

Box Office Report: 'Twilight,' Bond Dominate Fruitful Thanksgiving

by Ray Subers
November 25, 2012

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2

With a handful of strong holdovers and a few interesting new releases, moviegoers turned out in massive numbers over the Thanksgiving weekend. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, Skyfall and Lincoln held on to their positions in the top three, while newcomers Life of Pi and Red Dawn outperformed. The only disappointment was Rise of the Guardians, which missed the mark for a DreamWorks Animation offering.

For the three-day weekend, the Top 12 earned an estimated $206.7 million, which set a new Thanksgiving record ahead of 2009's $175.2 million.

Breaking Dawn Part 2 earned $43.07 million for the three-day frame ($64.02 million five-day), which is the highest-grossing second weekend ever for a Twilight movie. Through 10 days in theaters, the franchise finale has taken in just under $227 million, and is tracking about $4 million behind New Moon.

In second place, Skyfall added $36 million ($51.1 million five-day) for a new total of $221.7 million. It's already easily the highest-grossing Bond movie ever ahead of Quantum of Solace ($168.4 million), and it's on pace to close with at least $270 million.

While Breaking Dawn and Skyfall ranked first and second, respectively, the real all-star of the weekend was third place finisher Lincoln. In its second nationwide outing, the Steven Spielberg political drama was impressively up 19 percent to an estimated $25.02 million ($34.1 million five-day). The movie has already grossed $62.2 million; it's hard to say exactly how it's going to play over the next few weeks, but it does now appear guaranteed to earn over $100 million.

Rise of the Guardians opened to a poor $24.03 million over the three-day weekend, which added up to a $32.6 million five-day start. That's way less than The Muppets ($41.5 million) last year or Tangled ($68.7 million) two years ago. More importantly, though, the movie's five-day start is lower than any three-day opening for a DreamWorks Animation movie since 2006's Flushed Away.

The movie's audience was 57 percent female and 53 percent under the age of 25. They largely rejected 3D showings, as that format only accounted for 35 percent of the movie's box office.

Combine good word-of-mouth ("A" CinemaScore) and the holiday tie-in, and Guardians is at least likely to perform well over the next few weeks. Still, it's going to have a tough time getting past $100 million, which is terrible for an expensive DreamWorks movie.

Life of Pi was slightly behind Guardians with $22 million for the three-day weekend and $30.15 million for its five-day opening. That's about twice as much as Hugo made over the same period last year, though Pi was playing in more than twice the number of theaters. The movie's audience was 52 percent male and 60 percent were 25 years of age and up, and they gave Pi a solid "A-" CinemaScore. Unlike Guardians, people sought out the 3D version of Pi, and it represented 68 percent of the movie's box office.

Wreck-It Ralph flexed its muscles again with an estimated $16.8 million over the three-day frame ($23.01 million five-day), which was off just 10 percent from last weekend. That hold is surprising given the direct competition from Guardians, and reinforces the fact that Ralph is getting some of the best word-of-mouth for an animated movie in years. The Disney Animation movie has now grossed $149.5 million.

The long-delayed Red Dawn remake opened in seventh place this weekend with an estimated $14.6 million ($22 million five-day start). That's a fine debut, and is even more impressive considering the movie was shot over three years ago. According to distributor FilmDistrict, Red Dawn played best through the South and in military areas, and the movie's demographic breakdown was 62 percent male and 52 percent 25 years of age and older. Audiences awarded it a middling "B" CinemaScore, and odds are it fizzles pretty quickly in the next few weeks.

Silver Linings Playbook expanded to 367 locations this weekend and wound up in ninth place with an estimated $4.6 million ($5.9 million five-day). That would be a great result if the movie was exclusively riding word-of-mouth buzz at this point; however, The Weinstein Company's marketing pitched the movie as a Nov. 21 release, meaning this could essentially be the opening weekend gross (albeit without the full theater count potential). Further expansion plans are unclear right now, though it's easy to imagine the movie getting a nationwide push on Dec. 7 against weak competition from Playing for Keeps.

With tough competition for adult audiences from Skyfall, Lincoln and Silver Linings, two new limited releases failed to break out this weekend. Hitch**** grossed $301,000 at 17 locations for a mediocre $17,706 per-theater average, while Rust and Bone only mustered up $30,200 at two theaters ($15,100 average). Hitch**** will expand in to 45 or 50 locations this coming weekend, while Rust and Bone's expansion plans are currently unknown.

6. Killing Them Softly
7. Wreck-It Ralph

Box Office Report: Holdovers Hang On, 'Killing' 'Soft' in Sixth.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2

With two new nationwide releases—Killing Them Softly and The Collection—failing to make any noise at the box office, the post-Thanksgiving weekend lived up its reputation as a dumping ground. As a result, for the third-straight weekend the top three movies were The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, Skyfall and Lincoln. On the strength of those holdovers, the Top 12 earned an estimated $107.5 million, which is up a whopping 46 percent from the same frame last year.

Breaking Dawn Part 2 three-peated with an estimated $17.4 million (off 60 percent). The fifth and final Twilight movie continues to hang on slightly better than its predecessors, and with a $254.6 million total it's now within $1 million of catching up to New Moon.

This was Lionsgate/Summit's 11th weekend this year with a first place movie (four for Hunger Games, two for The Expendables 2, two for The Possession, three for Twilight). That leads all movie studios for 2012; overall, Lionsgate/Summit has earned $1.22 billion domestically this year, which ranks fourth among all studios.

Skyfall was a close second this weekend with an estimated $17 million, which is down 52 percent from last weekend. So far, the 23rd James Bond adventure has grossed an astounding $246 million, and could wind up as high as $290 million by the end of its run. Skyfall's impressive grosses helped get Sony to over $1.7 billion on the year, which is a new record for the studio.

In third place, Lincoln eased 47 percent to an estimated $13.5 million. It has now earned $83.7 million, which is ahead of director Steven Spielberg's 2011 movies The Adventures of Tintin ($77.6 million) and War Horse ($79.9 million).

With its holiday tie-in, DreamWorks Animation's Rise of the Guardians dipped a light 43 percent this weekend. Unfortunately, it only added $13.5 million for a new total of $48.9 million, and a $100 million total still looks like a long shot.

Life of Pi rounded out the Top Five with an estimated $12 million (down 47 percent). So far, the well-reviewed book adaptation has grossed $48.4 million, and it's likely this movie's ultimate fate will be determined overseas (where it's performing quite well so far).

In sixth place, Killing Them Softly bombed with just $7 million, which is one of Brad Pitt's worst openings ever. Still, it is nearly twice as much as Pitt and director Andrew Dominik's last collaboration, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, made in its entire run ($3.9 million). The movie received a terrible "F" CinemaScore, and should fade from theaters very quickly in the next few weeks.

The Collection took 10th place with an estimated $3.41 million from 1,403 locations. That's a bit less than its predecessor, The Collector, made in its opening weekend in 2009 ($3.57 million).

Silver Linings Playbook remained in fewer than 400 theaters this weekend, but still managed to only dip 24 percent to an estimated $3.3 million. Through 17 days in limited release, the David O. Russell romantic comedy has earned $11 million.

Anna Karenina expanded to 384 locations and grossed $2.23 million. The movie has now earned $4.08 million, and a nationwide expansion would appear to be on the horizon.

In its eighth weekend in theaters, Argo passed $100 million at the domestic box office. That makes it star Ben Affleck's first $100 million movie since 2003's Daredevil. Also, it's the first of the major awards contenders to reach that mark, though Lincoln is on pace to eclipse Argo's tally in the coming weeks.

Believe it or not, considering this spy has been on film since 1962. But Eon Productions/MGM/Sony Pictures’ most successful 007 starrer Skyfall rose to #1 in Week 5 to knock off Summit Entertainment’s Breaking Dawn Part 2 in Week 4 at the domestic box office.

“Nothing demonstrates the powerful word of mouth and outstanding playability on this film better than reclaiming the top spot in such a competitive marketplace,” Sony said today.

The 23rd James Bond actioner even has a shot of outgrossing domestically the Twilight Saga finale. Earlier in the week, it was announced that Skyfall had smashed the all time box office record in the UK, becoming the highest grossing film of all time in that market and overtaking Avatar for the record.

Box Office Report:'The Hobbit' holds number one spot, 'Jack Reacher' and 'This is 40' disappoint.

Despite a record-breaking opening, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey experienced a significant 57% drop off in its second week, bringing in an estimated $36.7 million, with an $8,952 per screen average. This brings The Hobbit’s ten-day gross to $149.9 million, tracking about 8% behind The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’s ten-day gross.

Paramount’s Jack Reacher (Cinema Score: A-) opened this past weekend in second place with a modest $15.6 million. Based on the popular Lee Child-created character, the Tom Cruise action flick has been somewhat of a box office wild card and will have to struggle to maintain momentum to make up the costs for the $60 million production.

The weekend prior to the Christmas holiday isn’t usually the strongest at the box office, but last year Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol opened wide on December 21 at $29.6 million. As many have already mentioned, Jack Reacher fans are perhaps put off by the casting, since the character is supposed to be physically imposing at 6’5″.

Judd Apatow’s comedy This is 40 (Cinema Score: B-) also opened this weekend at $12 million to take third place. Though not abysmal, it doesn’t hold a candle to the $22.7 million, number one opening for Funny People,

Apatow’s last directorial effort. But of course, Funny People starred Adam Sandler, which likely contributed to the strong opening.

A sort of-sequel to Knocked Up (which opened at $30.7 million), This is 40 stars Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, and Albert Brooks, and boasts an impressively large cast including John Lithgow, Jason Segel, Chris O’Dowd, Megan Fox, Michael Ian Black, and Lena Dunham. But the 134-minute run time and Paul Rudd’s relatively low box office draw may have contributed to the low first weekend earnings.

Box Office Report: 'Hobbit' Holds Off 'Django' on Final Weekend of 2012

On the last weekend of 2012, audiences crowded in to theaters to see three very different movies: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey managed to take the top spot for the third weekend in a row, though Django Unchained and Les Miserables also tallied impressive numbers. The Top 12 wound up earning an estimated $167.8 million, which helped push overall 2012 domestic box office to just under $10.8 billion (a new record).

The Hobbit dipped 11 percent to an estimated $32.9 million. The movie has been holding well over the past week (noticeably better than I Am Legend over the same period in 2007), and $300 million seems like it could be in play again. Through 17 days, the first of three Lord of the Rings prequels has grossed $222.7 million, which is in between Fellowship of the Ring ($189.3 million) and The Two Towers ($243.6 million).

In second place, Django Unchained earned an estimated $30.7 million from 3,010 locations in its first weekend. Including its Tuesday-to-Thursday revenues, Django has already grossed $64 million; in comparison, Inglourious Basterds was at $50.6 million at the same point. Assuming it doesn't completely crash in the next few weeks (and with an "A-" CinemaScore, there's no reason to expect it to), Django will pass Basterds ($120.5 million) to become writer-director Quentin Tarantino s highest-grossing movie ever.

After starting stronger than Django on Christmas, Les Miserables has trailed off slightly over the last few days. Still, the musical did great business this weekend with an estimated $28 million from 2,808 theaters. Through six days its earned $67.5 million, and with a handful of Academy Award nominations on the way it should at least double that amount by the end of its run.

Les Miserables's female audience (67 percent) awarded it a rare "A+" CinemaScore, and overall audiences gave it an "A".

In fourth place, family comedy Parental Guidance earned an estimated $14.8 million from 3,367 locations. With $29.6 million since Christmas Day, the Billy Crystal-Bette Midler comedy is clearly the top choice for families with younger children this season ahead of Monsters, Inc.'s 3D re-release ($18.5 million with six more days under its belt). Parental Guidance's audience was 52 percent female and 55 percent under the age of 25, and they gave it a solid "A-" CinemaScore.

Tom Cruise thriller Jack Reacher dipped 10 percent to $14 million, which was good for fifth place this weekend. Through 10 days, the Christopher McQuarrie adaptation has grossed $44.7 million, which is off from Valkyrie's $57.6 million total at the same point.

This Is 40 improved 14 percent to $13.2 million, bringing its 10-day total to $37.1 million. Judd Apatow's latest is going to have no problem out-grossing Funny People ($51.9 million), and should even get to Forgetting Sarah Marshall`s level ($63.2 million).

Lincoln continued to impress in its seventh weekend in nationwide release: Steven Spielberg's biopic of the 16th president was up 36 percent to $7.5 million for a new total of $132 million. With awards attention likely to buoy the movie through at least the month of January, Lincoln still has a lot more box office left to rack up.

Thanks to The Avengers, Brave, Wreck-It Ralph and now Lincoln, 2012 is officially Disney's highest-grossing year ever with over $1.53 billion.

Silver Linings Playbook grossed an estimated $4.1 million in its first weekend in nationwide release. It's still only in 745 theaters, though, and The Weinstein Company will likely expand it much further following Academy Award nominations on January 10. To date, the David O. Russell comedy has earned $27.4 million.

Zero Dark Thirty remained in the same five theaters in New York and Los Angeles this weekend, and as a result it dipped 23 percent to an estimated $315,000. Through 12 days, the controversial CIA thriller has grossed $1.37 million, and will expand to more theaters this weekend ahead of its Jan. 11 nationwide expansion.

Gus Van Sant's Promised Land, which stars Matt Damon and John Krasinski, debuted at 25 locations and earned a very weak $190,000. The movie will expand to around 1,500 screens on Friday, though it's unlikely that it will be able to pull many people away from the various other appealing options in theaters right now.

Box Office Report: 'Texas Chainsaw' Rips Through 'Django,' 'Hobbit,' 'Les Miz' at Box Office

"Texas Chainsaw 3D" pulled a stunner at the domestic box office this weekend, as the blood-drenched monster rehash massacred its rivals, taking in $23.3 million in its first three days of release.

Horror fans -- largely overlooked during the holiday season when awards and family fare rules at the multiplexes -- turned out in force and enabled the tool-wielding Leatherface to slice up “Django Unchained,” “Les Miserables” and “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” which fell from the top spot after three weeks.

The Weinstein Company’s “Django” took in $20 million to finish second and crossed the $100 million mark in the process. Quentin Tarantino’s slave saga has taken in $106.3 million since opening on Christmas Day.

“The Hobbit” was third with $17.5 million and Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth epic raised its domestic total to $263 million for Warner Bros. With more than $561 million from overseas, the first installment of the trilogy has taken in more than $820 million worldwide.

“Les Miserables” was fourth with $16.1 million. The star-studded musical also crossed the century mark and has brought in more than $103 million for Universal since its Christmas Day debut. The film, which stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway, added $14.5 million from 17 foreign markets over the weekend. It has taken in $81 million overseas and now has a worldwide total of $184.6 million.

Fox's Billy Crystal-Bette Midler family comedy "Parental Guidance," another Christmas Day opener, upped its overall domestic total to nearly $53 million, taking in $10.1 million.

The performance of "Texas Chainsaw" is a coup for Lionsgate, which spent $20 million to market and promote the picture, produced by Millennium Pictures for roughly $20 million. It blasted past pre-release expectations, which had it at around $15 million for the weekend.

Pent-up demand from underserved horror fans is becoming a post-holiday tradition. Paramount pulled off a similar shocker last year, when it opened exorcism tale "The Devil Inside" to $33 million in the first week in January. The last horror film in wide release was "Paranormal Activity 4," which opened on Oct. 19.

Opening an R-rated horror film so soon after the holidays “is kind of a calculated risk,’ Lionsgate president of film distribution Richie Fay told TheWrap Sunday, “but this time it paid off. I think the audience -- particularly fans of this genre -- was ready for something other than holiday fare.”

"Texas Chainsaw" defied critics and word-of-mouth. Opening night audiences gave the splatter fest just a "C+" CinemaScore. It got a big boost from its Friday performance, which included a number of midnight Thursday screenings, and totaled $10.2 million. Over the three days in 2,654 theaters, "Chainsaw" averaged $8,785 per location.

The "Chainsaw" audience was largely young women, with 52 percent female and 64 percent under 25.

Box Office Report: 'Zero Dark Thirty' Wins With $24 Mil; 'Haunted House' Beats 'Gangster Squad'

Zero Dark Thirty

Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty killed the competition at the weekend box office, grossing a better-than-expected $24 million as it expanded nationwide after earning an Academy Award nomination for best picture.

Heading into the weekend, tracking had suggested that Zero Dark Thirty would end up in a close race with Warner Bros.' period mob pic Gangster Squad, but in a surprise twist, the star-studded new filmwas beaten both by Zero Dark Thirty and horror spoof A Haunted House.

Zero Dark Thirty's No. 1 finish is a sizable victory for Sony and Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures, which continue to battle criticism that thefilm about the CIA's decade-long hunt for Osama bin Laden overemphasizes the role torture played in tracking him down.

Many believe Zero Dark Thirty, which has earned a total of $29.5 million since opening Dec. 19 in New York and Los Angeles, is benefiting from the controversy.

The critically acclaimed movie scored an A- CinemaScore from audiences. Males made up nearly 60 percent of those buying tickets, while two of the three top-performing theaters were in Washington, D.C., where the film has become a lightning rod.

Zero Dark Thirty, financed and produced by Annapurna, was penned by Mark Boal, who also teamed with Bigelow on the Oscar-winning The Hurt Locker. That 2008 movie, like many other modern-day films about terrorism and war, failed to whip up much interest at the box office, grossing only $17 million.

"Zero Dark Thirty is a big success," said Sony worldwide president of distribution Rory Bruer. "Kathryn did a masterful job of telling this story."
Fueled by African-American and Latino moviegoers, Haunted House outpaced expectations to gross a hearty $18.8 million for Open Road Films, IM Global and Endgame Entertainment. Placing No. 2, the movie starring Marlon Wayans is a parody of the Paranormal Activity franchise and other found-footage pics.

IM Global financed Haunted House through its Octane label, while Jim Sern'sEndgame put up the marketing money. According to exit surveys, 48 percent of those buying tickets were African-Americans, while Latinos made up 30 percent.

Open Road marketing head Jason Cassidy credited much of the film's success to Wayans, who crisscrossed the country doing publicity. "Marlon created a groundswell," he said.

Warner Bros.' Gangster Squad, placing No. 3, grossed a soft $16.7 million while receiving a B+ CinemaScore. Directed by Ruben Fleischer,Gangster Squad revolves around a special task force formed by the Los Angeles Police Department during the late 1940s to fight mobsters. Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Michael Pena and Emma Stone star.

The film was supposed to open in September, but its release was pushed back after the Colorado theater shooting in Julybecause of a scene in Gangster Squad that depicts a theater shooting. That scene was deleted.

Zero Dark Thirty was among a handful of films that enjoyed a boost after landing an Oscar nomination for best picture and is easily on course to become Bigelow's top-grossing film to date, besting the $45 million earned domestically by 1991's Point Break. The film earned a total of five nominations, including a best actress nom for Jessica Chastain.

Receiving the top Academy Award nom greatly can improve a film's fortunes if the timing is right, which is why Sony waited until now to unleash Zero Dark Thirty nationwide.

Among other best picture contenders, the Weinstein Co.'s Silver Linings Playbook, from director David O. Russell, was the big victor. The film was up 38 percent from the previous weekend -- the most of any film -- grossing $5 million for a total $41.3 million. The movie ups its theater count to 2,500 locations next weekend.

Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, from DreamWorks and Disney, fell less than 17 percent, grossing $6.3 million in its 10th weekend for a domestic total of $152.6 million.

Ang Lee's Life of Pi, now only playing in 757 theaters, was down a scant 5 percent after the nominations were announced, grossing $2.7 million domestically for a cume of $94.8 million. Overseas, the 20th Century Fox continued to defy expectations, grossing $33.2 million from 67 markets for an international total of $357.2 and worldwide cume of $452 million.
Best picture candidates Django Unchained and Les Miserables didn't see as much of a bump but already are big grossers.

Also from the Weinstein Co., Django came in No. 4, grossing $11.1 million for a domestic cume of $125.4 million.

Universal's Les Miserables fell 37 percent from the previous weekend, grossing $10.1 million for a total $119.2. Overseas, the musical took in $25.5 million for the weekend from 22 markets for an international cume of $115.1 million and worldwide total of $234.3 million.

Sony Pictures Classics' best picture contender Amour, playing in 15 theaters, scored the second-best location average of the weekend, grossing $270,575 in its fourth weekend for a theater average of $18,038 and cume of $651,852.

New specialty entry Quartet, directed by Dustin Hoffman and starring Maggie Smith, walked away with the best theater average of the frame. Debuting in two theaters in New York and L.A., the Weinstein Co. title grossed $50,333 for an average of $25,166.

Box Office Report: 'Mama's' Jessica Chastain Unleashes One-Two Box Office Punch

Jessica Chastain pulled off an unusual feat this weekend, as her brand new horror film “Mama” took the top spot at the box office just one week after her previous film, “Zero Dark Thirty,” also topped the box office charts.

“Mama,” which features Chastain and “Game of Thrones” star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as a couple who take in some feral children and their evil, invisible guardian, brought in an surprisingly strong $28.1 million. That was more than enough to beat out “Zero Dark Thirty,” which still earned an impressive $17.6 million for a second place finish.

Considering Chastain also just won a Golden Globe last weekend for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama (for “Zero Dark Thirty,” not “Mama,” we should add), it’s safe to say that the Oscar favorite has officially joined the A-list.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, on the other hand, who was once as A-list as they come, fell flat on his muscled face this weekend, as his comeback vehicle, “The Last Stand,” bombed out with a paltry $6.3 million over its debut weekend. That put the film well behind fellow newcomer “Broken City,” which also disappointed with only $9 million despite the presence of both Mark Wahlberg and noted singer Russell Crowe, and “Silver Linings Playbook,” which rose from tenth to third thanks to wider release and a Golden Globes bump.

Our suggestion for Arnold? Next time, have Jessica Chastain co-star.

7. Movie 43

8. Gangster Squad

Box Office Report:
'Hansel and Gretel' Slays Box Office as Other Star Vehicles Sputter.

"Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters,” an R-rated 3D update of the classic Grimm's fairy tale starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, slashed its way to $19 million and the top of the domestic box office on a weekend that saw some stars stumble.

But industry analysts had expected more from the movie considering the premium pricing from the 2,900 3D and Imax locations out of a market-high 3,373 theaters. The 3D locations accounted for 55 percent of the grosses, and Imax brought in 11 percent.

Cold and tough weather across much of the East Coast didn't help “Hansel and Gretel,” or the overall box office, which was down about 15 percent from the comparable weekend last year.

Paramount also opened "Hansel and Gretel" in 19 overseas markets and brought in $25 milliion. A solid overseas performance will be critical for the film to make money, given its $50 million budget.

“We had a strong Saturday,” Paramount's head of distribution Don Harris told TheWrap, “so I think that weather really did hurt us on Friday. The international number was stronger than we expected, so we're about where we wanted to be worldwide.”

The R-rating may have cut into its performance here. Just 43 percent of the "Hansel and Gretel" audience was under 25, while 55 percent was male. That missing young female demographic was the target of the horror thriller “Mama,” which opened No. 1 last week. The Guillermo del Toro-produced horror thriller, starring Jessica Chastain, wound up second this weekend with $12.9 million.

Box Office Report: Warm Bodies Kicks Off With $19.51 Million On Super Bowl Weekend.

On Super Bowl weekend, Warm Bodies showed a bit of life; everything else had much in common with the walking dead. While it is difficult to estimate ticket sales on Super Bowl Sunday,

Lionsgate/Summit Entertainment figured that the zombie movie would earn about $19.51 million over the weekend. Last week’s winner, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters dropped 53 percent to around $9.2 million, placing second.

Remarkably Silver Linings Playbook slipped only 14 percent to remain in third place with about $8.11 million in its 12th — repeat 12th — week. As for Sylvester Stallone’s latest — the poorly reviewed Bullet to the Head — it was shot down as expected winding up with just $4.50 million, to place sixth. And the gangster spoof Stand Up Guys appeared DOA as it opened in 659 theaters with just $1.50 million.

Box Office Report: 'Identity Thief' Cashes Big Check

Identity Thief

n spite of the inclement weather in much of the Northeast, Identity Thief got off to a fantastic start this weekend and is well-positioned to be the first major hit of 2013. Side Effects, on the other hand, was a bit underwhelming in its debut, and will be one of director Steven Soderbergh's more disappointing commercial outings.

The Top 12 wound up earning an estimated $89.6 million this weekend, which is off a whopping 48 percent from last year when The Vow and Safe House both opened to over $40 million.

At 3,141 locations, Identity Thief earned an estimated $36.6 million this weekend. That's one of the best openings ever for an original R-rated comedy, and it's director Seth Gordon's top start ahead of Four Christmases ($31.1 million) and Horrible Bosses ($28.3 million). It's also way up from Melissa McCarthy's Bridesmaids ($26.2 million); all three of the aforementioned titles wound up closing with at least $117 million, which suggests a $100 million finish is within reach for Identity Thief.

Universal is projecting that Winter Storm Nemo knocked around 10 percent off the weekend, which lines up with what competitive studios are estimating as well. This suggests that, without the storm, Identity Thief could have debuted north of $40 million.

Identity Thief had many factors working in its favor, including a dearth of competition: the last R-rated comedy that opened over $20 million was Ted over seven months ago. More importantly, though, credit belongs to Universal's marketing team for delivering a fantastic campaign that established the movie's unique premise while highlighting some broadly-appealing gags as well. That campaign also emphasized that likeable leads Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy (in her first lead role) would go head-to-head, and that interesting match-up surely drove a lot of traffic as well.

Universal is reporting that the audience was 58 percent female (meaning McCarthy's fans showed up alongside date-night audiences) and 57 percent were 30 years of age or older. The movie received a middling "B" CinemaScore, which isn't surprising given the movie's atrocious 24 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

1. Oz The Great & Powerful

2. The Call

3. The Incredible Bert Wonderstone

4. Jack The Giant Slayer

5. Identity Thief

6. Snitch

7. 21 & Over

8. Silver Linings Playbook

9. Safe Haven

10. Escape From Planet Earth

Box Office Report: Oz the Great and Powerful continues to cast its spell over the Us box office.

Sam Raimi's fantasy is still at No 1 while magician caper Burt Wonderstone fails to conjure opening-weekend crowds.

With little out there to challenge its supremacy for a couple of weeks, Sam Raimi's Oz the Great and Powerful sniffed the air and thought to itself: "I'll have a bit more." The resulting $42.2m (£27.9m) weekend haul through Buena Vista pushed the family movie's running total to a highly respectable $145m. Rival studios were wise to steer clear of Oz's $79.1m opening slot last weekend and similarly there were no challenges from likeminded family fare in the second session

Oz did not budge from its No 1 berth and maintained winning ways in the international marketplace too, leading to a $47m haul. Globally, it stands at $282m from a little over one week's business. Also of note is the Imax number. Oz brought in around $4m from 308 of the giant screens in North America, where it has generated $14m. The accompanying Imax release of a Hollywood tentpole is part of the landscape these days and the giant-screen business is booming internationally, where Imaxes have returned around $6.6m.

The strength of the female audience is something Hollywood recognises all too well after the success of early-2013 releases such as Identity Thief, and once again women turned out to good effect at the weekend, driving Halle Berry thriller The Call to an impressive $17.1m No 2 debut. The movie's US distributor TriStar said women accounted for roughly 61% of the opening weekend audience. Alas it seems not too many people from any demographic made the effort to support Warner Bros' new comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. The Steve Carell magician comedy (which features a smaller role for his old Bruce Almighty pal Jim Carrey) arrived in third place on a disappointing $10.3m.

Outside the top 10 there was a notable performance by A24, the new arthouse distributor based in New York that launched last year with the backing of the Guggenheim Fund. A24's publicists were trumpeting a double whammy this weekend. Harmony Korine's cheeky Spring Breakers opened in three venues on $270,000, which results in an extraordinary $90,000 per-site average. Also from A24 was Ginger & Rosa, the Elle Fanning London-set drama that premiered at the Toronto international film festival in 2012. That one grossed $45,000 from three sites for a strong $15,000 average. Later this year A24 will stage the limited release of Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring, starring Emma Watson as she recasts herself as a post-Potter actor of versatility following her decent turn in The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

The USA Weekend Top 10 Box Office Summery (Week of March 22-24, 2013).

1. The Croods

2. Olympus Has Fallen

3. Oz The Great & Powerful

4. The Call

5. Admission

6. Spring Breakers

7. The Incredable Bert Wonderstone

8. Jack The Giant Slayer

9. Identity Thief

10. Snitch

Box Office Report: 'Croods' Crushes, 'Olympus' Surprises This Weekend.

The Croods easily took the top spot on a busy weekend at the box office, though the real surprise was the impressive performance of Olympus Has Fallen. Meanwhile, Spring Breakers did decent business in its nationwide expansion, though it still fell behind Tina Fey-Paul Rudd disappointment Admission.

The Top 12 earned an estimated $131.9 million, which is unfortunately off 35 percent from last year when The Hunger Games alone made over $152 million.
The Croods grossed an estimated $44.7 million from 4,046 locations. Among recent original DreamWorks Animation movies, it's about even with 2010's How to Train Your Dragon ($43.7 million) and Megamind ($46 million), and a vast improvement over November's Rise of the Guardians (which took 11 days to get to $44 million).

This is without a doubt a good start for The Croods, though it was hard to imagine it going much lower. The movie had a competent marketing effort, and benefited from the fact that the only other 2013 animated movie so far was February's modest Escape From Planet Earth. With an "A" CinemaScore and no serious competition until May, The Croods is in a very good position, though it would be shocking if it came close to matching How to Train Your Dragon's $217.6 million.

The audience was 57 percent female, and surprisingly skewed older (55 percent were 25 years of age and up). 3D ticket sales only accounted for 38 percent of the gross, which is an incredibly low number for the format.

In second place, Olympus Has Fallen exceeded even the most generous expectations with an impressive $30.5 million debut. That's the top action movie opening so far in 2013 ahead of A Good Day to Die Hard ($24.8 million); it's also more than the combined debuts of Parker, The Last Stand, Dead Man Down and Bullet to the Head. Finally, Olympus Has Fallen is now director Antoine Fuqua's highest opener ahead of Training Day ($22.6 million), a past hit that was a major selling point in the marketing.

Confident that they had a potential hit on their hands, distributor FilmDistrict went all-in with a strong, aggressive marketing effort. It conveyed the movie's exciting premise (terrorists take over the White House), and highlighted the presence of well-liked actor Morgan Freeman. It also had Gerard Butler back in butt-kicking mode, which is clearly how audiences prefer their Butler.

Olympus Has Fallen is the first White House invasion movie of 2013, but it's not the last: Sony currently has White House Down on the schedule for the end of June. With director Roland Emmerich and stars Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, that movie has a solid blockbuster pedigree, and in the past movie's with similar concepts have both performed well in the same year (Deep Impact and Armageddon is a classic example).

Olympus Has Fallen's audience skewed older (73 percent above 25) and male (53 percent), though its impressive performance is likely due to some extent on the fact that it managed to appeal to women. It received a very good "A-" CinemaScore, though it remains to be seen if it can hold up against G.I. Joe: Retaliation next weekend.

After holding the top spot for the past two weeks, Oz The Great and Powerful slipped to third place with an estimated $22 million (off 47 percent). Through 17 days, the movie has earned a strong $177.6 million, though it remains on pace to close with over $100 million less than Alice in Wonderland.

The Call fell 49 percent to an estimated $8.7 million. Through its second weekend, the Halle Berry thriller has grossed $30.9 million.

Admission rounded out the Top Five with an awful $6.45 million from 2,160 locations. That's the worst live-action start for Tina Fey, and also worse than recent Paul Rudd disappointments Our Idiot Brother ($7 million) and Wanderlust ($6.53 million).

The marketing for Admission focused entirely on Fey and Rudd, with some commercials going as far as having the actors directly pitch the movie to audiences. While both actors are likeable, focusing on them took away from selling the story, which is what really gets people to head to the theaters. The audience that did turn out was overwhelmingly female (68 percent), older (a whopping 47 percent were at least 50 years old) and Caucasian (81 percent). They awarded the movie an unimpressive "B-" CinemaScore, which suggests the movie won't last very long in theaters.

After a great start in three theaters last weekend, Spring Breakers expanded to 1,104 theaters and earned an estimated $5 million. That's a good figure for upstart distributor A24, who utilized word-of-mouth while avoiding traditional (read: expensive) marketing techniques. Still, the movie dropped from Friday to Saturday, which suggests that it's going to be fairly front-loaded, and it would be surprising if it ultimately made it above the mid-teen-millions.

In seventh place, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone plummeted 58 percent to an estimated $4.28 million. The Steve Carell-Jim Carrey magician comedy has made an atrocious $17.4 million so far, and will likely vanish from theaters in the next week or two.
