Update Stephen Hawking-AI/Robots>WILL Eventually Kill us All/Destroy Our Earth

Elon Musk Claims Robots Could Kill us All in FIVE YEARS in his Latest Internet Post… Then deleted it Shortly After

  • SpaceX and Tesla CEO has again warned of the dangers of AI robots
  • In a comment he said he feared something 'dangerous happening'
  • Musk says the rise of AI will be exponential and could spell disaster
  • He cites a London-based company called Deepmind as an example of how rapidly artificial intelligence is improving
  • Musk made the comment on futurology website Edge but then deleted it
  • It follows numerous other such comments from the entrepreneur recently
Daily Mail UK, 18 November 2014

He may run some of the world's leading technology companies such as SpaceX and Tesla Motors, but in recent months Elon Musk has become increasingly wary of the growth of technology.
In particular, he has repeatedly expressed his concern at the rise in artificial intelligence, and he thinks it could pose a serious threat to the future of humanity.
In his latest comment he fears that the risk of ‘something seriously dangerous happening’ could be in as few as five years.

SpaceX and Tesla CEO has again warned of the dangers of AI robots. In a comment he said he feared something 'dangerous happening'. Musk (pictured) says the rise of AI will be exponential could spell disaster. He cites a London-based company called Deepmind as an example of how rapidly AI is improving

Although he doesn’t go into detail, he alludes to ‘digital superintelligences’ and internet bots as being among the potential problems facing humanity.
Musk made the comment on futurology site Edge, but deleted it soon after.

The reason for him deleting it is not known, although some suggest it may be because he feared being mocked for his ‘outlandish predictions’.

Quote:
WHAT IS DEEPMIND?

DeepMind Technologies is a British artificial intelligence company based in London.
It was acquired by Google for £400m ($625m) in January 2014.
The company says its exact goal is to ‘solve intelligence’, one of its recent achievements being the creation of a neural network that learns how to play video games.
The team is building algorithms that can learn in an attempt to create artificial intelligence.
Otherwise, though, the goals and methods of the company are not well-known - but it was apparently enough to convince Google to fork out a fairly sizable chunk of cash.
He continues:

‘Unless you have direct exposure to groups like Deepmind, you have no idea how fast - it is growing a pace close to exponential.’

He goes on to say that the risk of something dangerous happening is in the ‘five year timeframe’ or ten years at most.
But he adds that he is normally ‘super pro technology’ and has not raised this issue until recent months.
‘This is not a case of crying wolf about something I don’t understand,’ he writes.
‘I am not alone in thinking we should be worried.
‘The leading AI companies have taken great steps to ensure safety.
‘They recognise the danger, but believe that they can shape and control the digital superintelligences and prevent bad ones from escaping into the internet. That remains to be seen…’

Musk’s latest comments follow similar opinions posited by the entrepreneur in recent weeks.

In August in a tweet he said AI could be potentially more dangerous than nuclear weapons.
Then in early October Musk, talking at the Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit, said that AI could delete humans akin to ‘spam’ in an email inbox.
Later in October, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology AeroAstro Centennial Symposium he said:

‘I think we should be very careful about artificial intelligence. If I had to guess at what our biggest existential threat is, it’s probably that. So we need to be very careful with artificial intelligence.’
He continued: 'I’m increasingly inclined to think that there should be some regulatory oversight, maybe at the national and international level, just to make sure that we don’t do something very foolish.
‘With artificial intelligence we’re summoning the demon. You know those stories where there’s the guy with the pentagram, and the holy water, and … he’s sure he can control the demon? Doesn’t work out.’

He is not alone in his viewpoint, though.

Others, such as Stephen Hawkling, have also expressed concern at the rapid rise of AI.
‘Success in creating AI would be the biggest event in human history,’ Hawking said earlier this year
‘Unfortunately, it might also be the last.’

Update re: PhOtOs-Stephen Hawking >End of Human Race' +'Robots Could Kill us All in 5 Yrs'

'Artificial Intelligence Could Spell the End of the Human Race': Stephen Hawking Warns a Robotic Uprising will Spiral Out of Our Control

  • Professor Stephen Hawking has warned that humanity faces an uncertain future as technology learns to think for itself and adapt to its environment
  • At a London event, physicist said: 'AI may spell the end of the human race'
  • Professor Hawking was at an event to unveil a communication platform
  • The platform has doubled Professor Hawking's typing speed and improved his productivity ten-fold
Daily Mail UK, 2 December 2014

Our desire to create helpful digital assistants and self-driving vehicles could bring about our demise.
Professor Stephen Hawking has again warned that humanity faces an uncertain future as technology learns to think for itself and adapt to its environment.

Speaking at event in London, the physicist told the BBC that:

'The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.'

Professor Stephen Hawking (pictured) has again warned that humanity faces an uncertain future as technology learns to think for itself and adapt to its environment.Speaking at event in London, the physicist told the BBC that: 'The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race'

This echoes claims he made earlier in the year when he said success in creating AI 'would be the biggest event in human history, [but] unfortunately, it might also be the last.'

He argues that developments in digital personal assistants Siri, Google Now and Cortana are merely symptoms of an IT arms race which 'pale against what the coming decades will bring.'

But Professor Hawking noted that other potential benefits of this technology could also be significant, with the potential to eradicate, war, disease and poverty.

STEPHEN HAWKING'S NEW COMMUNICATION PLATFORM
Professor Stephen Hawking made today's claims at an event in London, during which he unveiled a new communications platform, designed by Intel.
The platform, called Assistive Context Aware Toolkit (ACAT) uses Professor Hawking's existing cheek sensor, which is detected by an infrared switch mounted onto his glasses.
This helps him select a character on a computer.
Software is then used to learn from Professor Hawking and predict his next words.
As a result, he types less than 20 per cent of the characters he would previously have had to type, making communication faster.
This information is sent to his existing speech synthesizer so he can communicate to others.
For example, to conduct a web search, Professor Hawking previously would have had to exit from his communication window, navigate a mouse to run the browser, navigate the mouse again to the search bar, and finally type the search text.
This new system automates these steps.
'Looking further ahead, there are no fundamental limits to what can be achieved,' continued Professor Hawking.
'There is no physical law precluding particles from being organised in ways that perform even more advanced computations than the arrangements of particles in human brains.'

Professor Hawking made today's claims at an event, during which he unveiled a new communications platform, designed by Intel, that will replace his current system.

This means he can type 20 per cent fewer characters he would previously have had to type, making communication faster.

This new system automates all of these steps.

According to Intel, Professor Hawking's typing speed is twice as fast and his improvement in common tasks, such as easier, more accurate and faster browsing, editing, managing and navigating the web, emails and documents has increased ten-fold.

This echoes claims he made earlier in the year when he said AI 'would be the biggest event in human history, [but] unfortunately, it might also be the last.' Professor Hawking has a Motor Neurone Disease related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) - a condition that has progressed over the years. This leaves him almost entirely paralysed.

'Medicine has not been able to cure me, so I rely on technology to help me communicate and live,' said Professor Hawking.
'The development of this system has the potential to improve the lives of disabled people around the world and is leading the way in terms of human interaction and the ability to overcome communication boundaries that once stood in the way.'

The platform has been three years in the making.

Earlier this year, Elon Musk likened artificial intelligence to 'summoning the demon'.
The Tesla and Space X founder previously warned that the technology could someday be more harmful than nuclear weapons.
And speaking at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) AeroAstro Centennial Symposium in October, Musk described artificial intelligence as our 'biggest existential threat'.

He said: 'I think we should be very careful about artificial intelligence. If I had to guess at what our biggest existential threat is, it's probably that. So we need to be very careful with artificial intelligence.
'I'm increasingly inclined to think that there should be some regulatory oversight, maybe at the national and international level, just to make sure that we don't do something very foolish.
'With artificial intelligence we're summoning the demon. You know those stories where there's the guy with the pentagram, and the holy water, and … he's sure he can control the demon? Doesn't work out.'

In August, he warned that AI could to do more harm than nuclear weapons.
Tweeting a recommendation for a book by Nick Bostrom called Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies that looks at a robot uprising, he wrote:

'We need to be super careful with AI. Potentially more dangerous than nukes.'
In a later tweet, Musk wrote: 'Hope we're not just the biological boot loader for digital superintelligence. Unfortunately, that is increasingly probable.'
Mr Musk has previously claimed that a horrific 'Terminator-like' scenario could be created from research into artificial intelligence.

The 42-year-old is so worried, he is investing in AI companies, not to make money, but to keep an eye on the technology in case it gets out of hand.
In March, Mr Musk made an investment San Francisco-based AI group Vicarious, along with Mark Zuckerberg and actor Ashton Kutcher.
In October 2013, the company announced it had developed an algorithm that 'reliably' solves modern Captchas - the world's most widely used test of a machine's ability to act human.

Who/what is Terminator...+ Skynet? are they something that came from Hollywood/the US?....

Stephen Hawking was mocked nearly 5 decades ago, before he had his accident.. about many of his theories...rather like Einstein, etc - (don't ya think Tarfoot?), many have been proven CORRECT

I do believe, and have done for years, that both Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk have the right ideas/clues, but like most geniuses are always misunderstood by mis-reports in the Media- for them to sell their outlets

A.I. + Robots, WILL eventually destroy the earth and most of the people within..

Those A.I. + eventually more powerful Robots , created from those in power, like the US, Russia, & China, etc. by their darn 'secret testing, on our Earth, by various nuclear testing, have already weakened our Earth's axil = hence the increase in EARTHQUAKES, and crazy weather in our world today

Global Warning?...

Mankind, (and those in power), in one way or another, has/and continues to destroy our earth

Interesting discussion... & thank you for posting your thoughts Tarfoot ..

Ohhhhh Ladybbird you've gotta catch these movies. It's amazing how science fiction movies of the past have become reality.
The Terminator (1984)
107 min - Action | Sci-Fi - 26 October 1984 (USA)

A human-looking indestructible cyborg is sent from 2029 to 1984 to assassinate a waitress, whose unborn son will lead humanity in a war against the machines, while a soldier from that war is sent to protect her at all costs.

Director:
James Cameron
Writers:
James Cameron, Gale Anne Hurd, 1 more credit »
Stars:
Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Michael Biehn

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
137 min - Action | Sci-Fi - 3 July 1991 (USA)

A cyborg, identical to the one who failed to kill Sarah Connor, must now protect her ten-year-old son, John, from a more advanced cyborg, made out of liquid metal.

Terminator Salvation (2009)
115 min - Action | Drama | Sci-Fi - 21 May 2009 (USA)

In 2018, a mysterious new weapon in the war against the machines, half-human and half-machine, comes to John Connor on the eve of a resistance attack on Skynet. But whose side is he on, and can he be trusted?

Ohhhh I agree with you all so much as to how all the governments have ruined and continue to ruin this world. I'm a firm believer in Chemtrails and weather modification, not believing it is good but that they the governments are doing it. I see these chemtrails all the time, big difference in chemtrails and contrails.
