Red Arrow Shark Nos Increase Around The World-Some Beaches Closed

Record Sharks Increase Threaten Spring Break in Florida

Tens of thousands of sharks have been spotted around in the area around Palm Beach County, on Florida’s south-east coast.

The Telegraph UK, 14 March 2013

As Florida prepares for the annual Spring Break, several resorts have had to close their beaches as record numbers of sharks gather offshore.

Tens of thousands of sharks have been spotted around in the area around Palm Beach County, on Florida’s south-east coast.

Craig Pollock, a Palm Beach lifeguard, told Palm Beach Daily News: “They were frenzied and chasing bait all the way up to shore. They were practically right on the sand.”

The sharks, believed to be mostly blacktips and spinners, are heading north to follow their prey, smaller fish such as herring and sardines.

Spinner sharks, which can grow up three metres long, are named for their spinning jumps.

Blacktip sharks are slightly smaller, at two and a half metres long, but have been known to attack humans.

Florida has the highest number of shark attacks of any state in the US, with a total of 633 in the last 110 years, but there have been just 11 fatalities.
Last year there were 53 shark attacks in the US, the most since 2000, with Florida accounting for 26 of those.
Blacktip sharks were responsible for four of the attacks last year in Florida.
Dr Stephen Kajiura, who researches shark migration at Florida Atlantic University, said:

“Coming into March, we’re getting tens of thousands of sharks close to shore.
“In one flight from the Boca Raton Inlet to the Jupiter Inlet, we counted over 15,000 sharks less than 200 yards from shore. That’s 1,000 sharks per square kilometre. If you were a swimmer, you would probably be within 60 feet of a shark.”
He added: “It is surprising to think there may be a shark swimming 60 feet away from us, but they are not out to get us,” he said.

Riviera Beach lifeguard Eddie Green told the Palm Beach Post that the sharks had been there “every day since December”.
Once a shark has been spotted, lifeguards must close the beach until half an hour after the last shark has been spotted.
Shari Tellman, of Florida Atlantic University, told the Guardian that there is little risk of a shark attack.

"The sharks are not predatory, at least as far as humans are concerned, and in clear water are far more likely to just swim away," she said.
“The only real issue would be if the water's murky and there's case of mistaken identity, or a shark just bumps into you, because they have very rough skin
“When they are together in a big group there's always the possibility of larger sharks being nearby, but there's only a small chance of any problem.”

Shark Patrols to Increase off South Australian Beaches

SHARK patrols will increase off the South Australian coast with planes in the air for more than 900 hours.

News.com au

Emergency Services Minister Jennifer Rankine said the patrols would operate for an extra 170 hours this year, running from 11am to 8pm seven days a week from December 1 to March 31.

They will be conducted by the University of South Australia in conjunction with its pilot-training school, giving students valuable flying time.
A fixed-wing aircraft will be used to patrol the coast from Rapid Bay, south of Adelaide, to North Haven in the city's northwestern suburbs.
Patrols will also be conducted on the state's south coast, from Victor Harbor to the Murray mouth, during the school holidays.

"With weekends and school holidays being the busiest times at the beach, this increase in patrol hours will give South Australians peace of mind and ensures, as best we can, their safety in the water," Ms Rankine said.

Aerial shark patrols will increase along the Adelaide coastline.
