Default Power to Cope With Criticism

This is from our Pastor's sermon yesterday. I told him after the service that I had to go home and soak my feet. I sure his sermon stepped on a great many toes....

Ephesians 4:25-32
New International Version (NIV)

25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26 “In your anger do not sin”[a]: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. 28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.

29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

A Prayer for Power to Cope with Criticism

Heavenly Father, help me to understand the power that is resident in my mouth. Help me to grasp the fact that I have the ability to give life or death through my choice of words. Remind me each day that kind words cost nothing, but harsh words can devastate people.

Give me the wisdom needed to better comprehend criticism when it comes my way. If it is needed, help me to heed correction. If it is unjustified, provide me with the proper words to defuse an uncomfortable and tense confrontation.
In Jesus' name I pray. Amen
.

Power Principles

I can cope with criticism through and honest evaluation of the remarks, especially as I ask God for cool headed wisdom.

I can release the stinging hurt of such criticisms by trusting in God's guidance and forgiveness, and by forgiving those who have slandered me.

I must rely on God to help me cope with both justified and unjustified criticisms, always realizing He is more interested in my growth than in my comfort.

I can strengthen my power to cope with criticism by sharing good words (not just desiring kind accolades) and by reaching out to others who are in the midst of the hurt that caused them to criticize.

A Power Promise

Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.
(Proverbs 16:24)
