Default The Great Falling Away has Begun in Earnest!

Let no one in any way deceive you, for it (the day of the Lord) will not come unless the apostasy (great falling away) comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction (the anti-Christ). 2 Thess 2:3

The “Great Falling Away” (apostasy) is not a falling away by believers from professing Christ or falling away from church activities or falling away from doing things in the name of Christ, but it is a falling away from faith!!! Faith? What kind of faith? The faith that is evidenced by being renewed day by day to become more like Christ. This is what faithfully following Christ produces. There are many who pay lip service to this, and claim that that is what their church teaches but if you examine their doctrine and life closely you will find what they have is house of cards and will surely fall.

Falling away from faith is falling away from living a crucified life, falling away from continually reckoning the members of our bodies dead to sin. It is the same thing Paul wrote to Timothy about saying that there would come a time when believers would have a form of godliness, but not actually be living godly lives because they would not be walking in the Spirit and overcoming sin by the power of the Holy Spirit. These fallen away believers would still however, outwardly appear very spiritual and to men, they would have the “form” but no life…no Spirit and inwardly, they would be ruled by sin, living defeated, hollow lives. (2 Tim 3)

Jesus told his disciples in a parable that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart…and finished it by saying, “however, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18) The answer is that question is yes and no. There will be many who will stop seeking God and many will lose heart and thus many will fall away and become unfaithful.

In the Jewish marriage custom, the bride groom writes out a marriage covenant with the bride, setting a price that he will pay for her. Then he gives her gifts, then leaves her for a season to get their house ready. In his absence, her responsibility is wait expectantly for him, to purify herself and to make herself ready for his return. And so it is that Christ wrote a new “marriage” covenant with His blood, then gave us the gift of the Holy Spirit and has gone to prepare a place for us. Soon He will be returning for His pure bride, who has been watching and praying and making herself ready by “purifying herself from all filthiness of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of the Lord” (2 Cor 7:1-2)

We can see then that those who fall way become the unfaithful bride – these are the foolish virgins who no longer have the oil of the Holy Spirit to live a godly life and are therefore not a part of His true bride!

We have been saved by faith in Christ, and the evidence of this is saving faith is the “obedience of faith” that Paul speaks of in Rom 1 & 16. James also mentions this faith, that it is dead faith if there is no evidence of “works”, the works being – obedience to Christ…or living a godly life!

These “works”are works of obedience – NOT – “works of the law”. Many preachers don’t understand this and in so doing lead their flock into error. God has commanded us to obey Him but He has also given us the power (Spirit) to do so as well, this is something that was never possible under the law. So if God commands me to follow Him (obey) then this is not “works based salvation” otherwise He would be contradicting Himself.

As an illustration, consider the children of Israel in captivity in Egypt. God through Moses tells them of God’s wrath coming upon Egypt but gives them hope that they will be saved if they put their trust in God AND(!!!) obey His word to them. That word was a commandment for the Israelites to eat the sacrificial lamb and take the blood in order to be saved from the coming wrath of the death angel. Who saved the Israelites, God or themselves? God of course, but they had believing faith to be saved! In this instance their believing faith was is evidenced by works of obedience. The household had to take that lamb, kill it, cook it, eat it and smear its blood on the door posts. Yet, suppose their next door neighbor also believed the word from Moses that they would be saved that night, but they did not obey the word? They would have had dead faith. And they would have perished and not escaped the wrath that was coming. Do you get it?

So it is with dead faith and living faith. The one who has saving faith is the one who believes and obeys! Jesus said that the one who hears and obeys His word is the one who has saving faith to withstand the storms, and the greatest storm of all is yet to come…the coming wrath of God! The other hearer, who does not obey is likened to those who build a house on the sand…and when that great day comes…great shall be their fall!!!

This is why God tells us to “work out our salvation with fear and trembling”. Living a Godly life is by faith, and this faith is an overcoming faith. Salvation is not by works of the law, but neither does it come automatically, we must repent and believe – but this living faith is worked out! If you are not overcoming sin and being conformed to the image of Christ on a daily basis, then it is time to check up on whether your faith is dead or alive! God has given us all a measure of faith to “renounce the things hidden because of shame, not walking in craftiness or adulterating the word of God…”

May the God of all peace strengthen you and quicken you by His Spirit to live a life obedient to Him, a Godly life as a pure testimony for Christ, with the faith that believes that God by His Spirit is able to strengthen you daily to overcome sin and to remain faithful to Christ until the end!!! Blessings
