Right you are.

Hearth Toaster circa. 1800. Bread was placed between the arches; when one side was browned, the toaster was rotated to brown the other side.

But the threads on the end would make me think it's a sctatch awl from an old measuring tool... Many had them attached so you could make a mark where needed...
