A US self-styled pick-up artist who called for the legalisation of rape has been forced to cancel a controversial series of events in the UK, claiming he could not guarantee the safety of those wanting to attend.

The cancellation has been welcomed by the Government, with a minister branding comments made by Daryush Valizadeh as "absolutely repulsive".

Valizadeh, who calls himself Roosh V, said while there would be no official Return of Kings events there was nothing to stop men gathering in private.

The 36-year-old American has published a number of books on how to "pick up women" and posted tips on his website on how to "bang" women.

In one post, Mr Valizadeh said rape should be legalised "if done on private property".

He wrote:

"Less women will be raped because they won't voluntarily drug themselves with booze and follow a strange man into a bedroom, and less men will be unfairly jailed for what was anything but a maniacal alley rape."

Announcing the cancellation of his UK events, Mr Valizadeh said on his blog:

"I can no longer guarantee the safety or privacy of the men who want to attend on 6 February, especially since most of the meetups cannot be made private in time.

"While I can't stop men who want to continue meeting in private groups, there will be no official Return of Kings meetups.
"The listing page has been scrubbed of all locations. I apologise to all the supporters who are let down by my decision."

There had been calls for the meetings to be banned with a petition gathering more than 600,000 signatures against the events.

Katie Pruszynski, who started the petition on Change.org, said:

"He encourages men to ignore when a woman says 'no', he believes rape inside private property should be legal and he routinely refers to women as 'the enemy'."

Responding to an urgent question tabled by Labour at Westminster, Home Office Minister Karen Bradley told MPs:

"The Government is pleased that the Return of Kings events appear to have been cancelled."

She added: "The comments from this individual and the proposals by this group are absolutely repulsive.
"This has no place in British society."

Ms Bradley also pointed out the Home Secretary had the power to ban individuals from entering the UK.

Shadow Women and Equalities Minister Kate Green:

"There's been widespread ridicule but also revulsion at the antics of the group Return of Kings."

Northumbria Police said they were pleased the event in Newcastle had been cancelled

A statement said:

"The people of Newcastle and the UK made their feelings resoundingly clear that the group were not welcome here and that was a view that the force and the Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird wholeheartedly supported."
