New York state is offering a $100,000 reward for information that leads to the capture of two convicted murderers who broke out a maximum-security prison.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says Sunday the unusual step is "appropriate" for the situation.

In a conference call with reporters, Cuomo detailed the lengths Richard Matt and David Sweat went to in their escape from the Clinton Correctional Facility near the Canadian border.

He says the men cut through a steel plate, broke through a brick wall, had to shimmy through a steam pipe and cut through a steel lock and chain to open up a manhole cover.

Cuomo says it would have taken days to do what they did.
Authorities say the men could be anywhere in the state, or left it altogether.

An employee at a Dunkin' Donuts across the street from an upstate New York prison where two convicted murders made a daring escape says the situation has been "nerve-wracking."
Beth Nichols says one employee even had a panic attack after being told about Saturday's prisoner breakout. The employee lives walking distance away on the same road, but authorities would not immediately allow her to enter her home. Her mother picked her up instead.

Convicted murderers Richard Matt and David Sweat broke out of the Clinton Correctional Facility. Authorities say they used power tools to cut into steam pipes and shimmy to freedom.
Nichols says two correction officers came to the shop carrying photo IDs of the escaped prisoners and said they were dangerous and shouldn't be approached if seen.

The brother of a man killed by one of two murderers who escaped from a maximum-security prison says the prison break has turned his world "upside-down all over again."
Steven Tarsia tells The Associated Press he couldn't believe it when he found out David Sweat and fellow inmate Richard Matt broke out of an upstate New York prison.

Sweat was convicted of first-degree murder for killing Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Tarsia in 2002.
The inmates used power tools to cut their way to freedom and emerge from a manhole cover blocks from the prison. They were reported missing from their beds at about 5:30 a.m. Saturday.
Authorities are investigating how they could have gotten the tools.

Steven Tarsia says he thinks they must have had help, but can't imagine why anyone would have helped them.

New York's governor says two convicted murderers "had to be heard" as they cut through steel and escaped from a maximum-security prison.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo told ABC's "Good Morning America" that Richard Matt and David Sweat broke out of the Clinton Correctional Facility in "a really elaborate, sophisticated operation" that involved shimmying through a steam pipe.

The men were reported missing from their beds at about 5:30 a.m. Saturday.
Roadblocks were set up in the area of the prison, about 20 miles from the Canadian border. Bloodhounds and helicopters were being used to track down the men.

Cuomo said officials were reaching out to the families of the men's victims.

Hundreds of law enforcement officers have spent the night searching for two convicted murderers who escaped a maximum-security New York state prison.
Officials say Sunday officers from local, state and federal agencies are seeking 48-year-old Richard Matt and 34-year-old David Sweat.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the duo used power tools to cut through steel pipes at the Clinton Correctional Facility near the Canadian border.
They were discovered missing at about 5:30 a.m. Saturday.
Cuomo says their escape was the result of "an elaborate plot."

Sweat was serving a life sentence without parole for killing a sheriff's deputy in 2002. Matt was sentenced to 25-years-to-life for the kidnapping, dismemberment and murder of his former boss in 1997.

The woman at the heart of an internal investigation into possible misdeeds within the Clinton Correctional Facility that allowed the escape of two inmates has been named as 51-year-old wife and mother Joyce Mitchell (center left). Also known as Tillie, Mitchell has worked since 2010 at the prison, where she is a prisoner supervisor. While not a guard, she worked closely with the escapees and knew the killers, including the 'womanizer' double murderer Richard Matt (top), quite well. Mitchell's husband Lyle (center at right with the couple's son) also works at the 3,000-inmate prison.

The female prison worker questioned in connection with the escape of two New York murderers has been named as inmate work assignment supervisor Joyce Mitchell, sources say.
Mitchell, who's worked at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora since 2010, was interviewed by investigators as they try to determine how David Sweat and Richard Matt obtained the power tools they needed to undertake their cunning Shawshank Redemption-style escape.

Mitchell was named just as police released photos of tattoos sported by cop killer Sweat and his 'womanizing' double-murderer cohort Matt in a bid to help the public identify the fugitives.

Convicted killers: David Sweat (top), 34, and Richard Matt, 48, escaped the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York sometime between 10.30pm on Friday and 5.30am on Saturday. Authorities are convinced they must have had help

Mitchell - known as Tillie - was a public official, the town tax collector of Dickinson, New York. She was questioned by prison officials on Sunday.
Dickinson is about an hour from Dannemora, the home of the maximum-security Clinton Correctional Facility, 25 miles from the Canadian border in upstate New York.

Mitchell, a registered Republican, lives in a two-story gray home with a 'Don't Tread on Me' Gadsden Flag - made popular by the Tea Party movement - flying out front.
The Stars and Stripes and a U.S. Air Force flag are also on show.

Mitchell is an industrial training supervisor who is responsible for inmate work assignments at the prison.

She was said to be close to both escapees, two-time killer Richard 'Rick' Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, who gunned down a sheriff's deputy.

According to her Facebook page, Mitchell graduated from North Country Community College in the resort town of Saranac Lake, New York, in 2001.

Also on Monday, it came to light that the escapees were housed on a floor for well-behaved inmates where perks included getting to work as assistants to prison contractors such as plumbers and electricians.

'There's a common misconception that inmates are locked up 23 hours a day,' a veteran corrections officer told the newspaper. 'That's not the case. These guys are coming and going all the time.'

FORMER ACCOMPLICE WHO HELPED JAIL ESCAPEE FEARS REVENGE ATTACK

A convicted murdered who testified against escapee Richard Matt is living in fear of a revenge attack.
Lee Bates, who helped Matt kill businessman William Rickerson, gave evidence against his old accomplice, helping secure his minimum 25-year sentence.
Bates, recently last year after 15 years inside, is now under unspecified protection.
His father told DailyMail.com that his son fears for his lfe
Lee Bates Senior called Matt a 'very dangerous individual' and said: 'We know he is capable of extreme action.'
The NY Post reported that the escapees were housed in the lax 'Honor Block' area at Clinton.
One of their privileges in that wing includes being allowed to wear civilian clothes - which will have given them an undoubted advantage in their escape attempt.

Meanwhile, sources said that Matt and Sweat were known in the prison for spending a lot of time in each other's company, and would regularly take meals together.

A profile for a Joyce Mitchell on Facebook lists her job as industrial training supervisor at Clinton Correctional Facility.
Mitchell's relationship status on the social network is 'married' and her photo is a family portrait of a man and son.

It is not yet known how the two men got the power tools, but authorities have already begun following leads - including speaking with employees.
They are also trawling through the prisoners' phone records and logs of visitors in the hope of finding a clue as to how the escape was planned.

A senior source said she had already been pulled from her post - although what it was remained unclear.

There was speculation she may have fallen for Matt's good looks, with the source saying he 'had a way with the ladies'.

'YOU CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH SECURITY WITH HIM: THE 'WOMANIZING' KILLER WHO'S ESCAPED BEFORE AND NOW ROAMS FREE

Richard Matt's former fiancee, a step-brother and co-defendant took turns at Matt's trial providing details of the 1997 kidnap, torture and hacksaw dismemberment of Matt's 76-year-old former boss, whose body was found in pieces in the Niagara River.

William Rickerson spent 27 hours on a snowy December night in the trunk of a car in pajamas while his killers drove from New York to Ohio and back, angry because he wouldn't tell them the location of the large sums of money Matt was convinced Rickerson kept on hand.

Co-defendant Lee Bates described how Matt at one point opened the trunk and bent the duct tape-bound elderly man's fingers back until they broke. After driving some more, Matt snapped Rickerson's neck with his bare hands.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/...3820450504.jpg

Before the car ride, Matt had beaten Rickerson in his North Tonawanda home, stopping long enough to eat pepperoni and drink wine, Bates testified. He poured the rest of the wine on Rickerson, then pulled off the businessman's hairpiece and put it in his pocket.
After the killing, Matt fled to Mexico, where he killed a man outside a bar in Matamoros. He served nine years in prison there before being returned to the United States in 2007.

Seven of the 12 jurors who in 2008 convicted Matt in Rickerson's murder returned to the courtroom to watch the sentencing. After nearly four weeks of testimony, they'd convicted him in four hours.

'Of all the cases I've tried this would top my list for the death penalty,' prosecutor Joseph Mordino, whose experience at the time included more than 250 homicide cases, would tell a Niagara County judge.
Matt's sentence of 25 years to life in prison was the maximum for second-degree murder.
Retired Detective David Bentley, who was part of the team which jailed Matt in 1997, seemed to confirm the same thing.

He told the Post: 'When [Matt's] cleaned up, he's very handsome and, in all frankness, very well endowed. He gets girlfriends any place he goes.'

The men, who were both serving lengthy sentences, used power tools to cut through a steel wall in their cells, before climbing out of a hole in the wall which led the men to a series of tunnels, taking them to a manhole outside prison walls.
The men even left a note on one of the tunnels reading, 'Have a nice day', accompanied with a smiley face, which authorities discovered after the escape sometime on Friday night or Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo promised justice would be served.
Speaking on Sunday, Cuomo vowed to return the 'Have a nice day!' note to the two notorious killers.

'I'm sure they knew that since it was the first escape it was going to be a big deal,' he said of the men, the first to escape from the maximum-security area of the prison since it was built 170 years ago. 'But we'll get them back and we'll give them the note back.'

The governor offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the men, saying that the 'first order of business is to get these killers back'

'It was a sophisticated plan,' Gov Cuomo said. 'It took a period of time, no doubt, to execute.'

The cunning escape had hundreds of local, state and federal law enforcement officers searching for a police deputy's killer and another man imprisoned for dismembering his boss.

Governor Cuomo said the men, whom authorities believe must have used power tools as part of their prison break, had help in the form of fellow cons in neighboring cells who refused to squeal.
Cuomo said it was impossible to believe nobody heard the noise of the tools.

'They were heard, they had to be heard,' Cuomo told ABC's 'Good Morning America' on Sunday.
'I chatted with a couple of the inmates myself and said, "You must be a very heavy sleeper," Cuomo said.

After the search is over, 'we'll go through the exact details of what they did and how they did it to ensure this never happens again,' Cuomo said later.

Cuomo also conceded that $100,000, or $50,000 per fugitive, was a huge sum for a reward, but said what's important is that these two dangerous men be apprehended before they hurt anyone else.
'This is a crisis situation for the state.' he said. 'They're capable of committing grave crimes again.'

Sweat, 34, is serving a sentence of life without parole after he was convicted of first-degree murder for killing a sheriff's deputy in Broome County, New York, on July 4, 2002.
Steven Tarsia, brother of Deputy Kevin Tarsia, said finding out his brother's killer had escaped 'turns your world upside-down all over again.'

Sweat, 34, is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the murder of a sheriff's deputy. He is 5'11', 165 pounds and has brown hair and tattoos on his left bicep and right fingers.

Steven Tarsia, brother of Deputy Kevin Tarsia, said finding out his brother's killer had escaped 'turns your world upside-down all over again.'

In 2008, Matt was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the ruthless murder and dismemberment of his former boss, 76-year-old William Rickerson.

The 48-year-old's criminal history stretches far beyond that cruel murder as well. After killing Rickerson in 1997, Matt fled to Mexico where in 1998 he got into a bar fight and killed another man.

And on Sunday it was revealed that Matt was even part of an elaborate plot to torture and kill an Hollywood heiress.

Police officer Gabriel Dibernardo said that while Matt was in jail awaiting trial on a rape charge, he agreed to a high-society murder with a criminal acquaintance.

The News reported that Matt met David Telstar, a Californian accused of embezzling more than $1million from his super-rich wife - an heiress to the fortune of movie mogul Harry Warner, one of the four Warner Brothers.

While inside at a holding center, Telstar recruited Matt as a killer-for-hire - paying his $15,000 bail then offering him $100,000 to kill his wife, Desiree Telstar.

He was also told to kill Telstar's stepfather, president of the LAPD's board of commissioners Stanley Sheinbaum, and also her mother, Betty Warner Sheinbaum.
But the plot, presumably designed to send some of the vast Warner fortune towards Telstar, never came to fruition.

Business Insider reporters that Matt turned informant, and revealed the scheme to the authorities in exchanged for a reduced conspiracy to murder charge.

Tarsia said on Sunday he couldn't imagine how the men could have gotten power tools and escaped without help, but 'I don't know why anybody would help them.'

Sweat and another man fired 15 rounds into Deputy Tarsia in 2002 shortly after using a pickup truck to break into a Pennsylvania woman's house, stealing rifles and handguns, authorities have said.

THESE TWO MEN AREN'T THE ONLY ONES: HIGH-PROFILE PRISON ESCAPES IN RECENT US HISTORY

July 2009, from a prison in Michigan City, Indiana: Three inmates left through tunnels under the prison yard. All were captured within days.

August 2008, from the Curry County Adult Detention Center in New Mexico: Eight inmates made it to freedom by climbing prison pipes inside a wall, then using homemade instruments to slice a hole in the roof. All were caught, including one taken into custody four years later.

August 2008, from Rockville Correctional Facility in Indiana: A female inmate escaped with the help of a prison guard who was promised $15,000 in return. She remained on the run for four months.

July 2003, from the Elmira Correctional Facility in New York: Before escaping, two convicted murderers spent a month chiseling a hole through the concrete ceiling of their cell with a sledgehammer head and other shop tools. They made dummies with papier mache heads sporting their own clipped hair, which they left in their bunks that night. Both were later captured.

December 2000, from the John B. Connally Unit, a maximum security prison in Kenedy, Texas, near San Antonio: A group later dubbed The Texas Seven overpowered prison staff, taking their clothes and cash. They drove off in a maintenance truck, committing more crimes while on the run. Six were captured and sentenced to death; one killed himself before authorities closed in.

January 1997, from a maximum security prison in Pittsburgh: Six prisoners escaped from a lockup that was considered 'escape-proof,' tunneling their way out using a jackhammer and other prison-issue power tools, along with blueprints of the building. The men apparently used tools used by inmates working on a steam-pipe installation project. All were later caught.

May 1984, from Mecklenburg Correctional Center in Virginia: Six death-row inmates overpowered inattentive guards and bluffed their way out by saying they had a bomb. All six were caught, returned to prison and executed.

June 1962, from Alcatraz, an island off San Francisco: Four men crawled through holes they'd cut in their cell walls, climbed to the roof and left on a raft fashioned from prison raincoats and rubber cement. They were never found; officials surmised they may have drowned before reaching shore.

April 1941, from what was then called Sing Sing prison, in New York: Three inmates made their getaway after killing a guard and a police officer. One was killed; the other two surrendered after seven hours.

January 1934, from Crown Point County Jail, Indiana: John Dillinger, the most-wanted man in the country, used a wooden prop gun supplied by his attorney to corner two guards who released him. He drove away in a sheriff's car. Dillinger was shot to death outside a Chicago movie theater by federal agents.
Dannemora occupies just more than one square mile within the northern reaches of the Adirondack Forest Preserve and is surrounded by forest and farmland. The stark white perimeter wall of the prison, topped with guard towers, borders a main street in the village's business district.

Cuomo on Saturday called described the two men as extremely dangerous. He asked the public to notify the police should they encounter the men.
Roadblocks were set up in the area around the village of Dannemora, which is about 20 miles from the Canadian border, and bloodhounds and helicopters were being used to track down the men

The two men's adjoining cells were empty during a morning check, said Anthony Annucci, the acting state corrections commissioner.

'A search revealed that there was a hole cut out of the back of the cell through which these inmates escaped,' Annucci said. 'They went onto a catwalk which is about six stories high. We estimate they climbed down and had power tools and were able to get out to this facility through tunnels, cutting away at several spots.'

Investigators were probing how the men acquired the tools - and if any were missing from contractors at the prison.
Officials said it was the first escape from the maximum-security portion of the prison, which was built in 1865.

Canadian broadcaster CTV News reported that officials are concerned the men may attempt to enter Canada through Ontario or Quebec, and safety alerts have been broadcast to police officers in the Greater Toronto Area.

Joyce Mitchell, a 51-year-old grandmother and prison worker, supplied Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, with tools including hacksaw blades, chisels, a punch and a screwdriver bit, according to court records.
She told investigators that she was going to meet the men at the manhole where they emerged outside the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, and be their getaway driver in the scenario eerily similar to the blockbuster movie Shawshank Redemption, but she failed to follow through.

'They were going to meet down by the power plant, drive, I'm not going to say into the sunset, because it was after midnight and it was dark out, but they were going to drive ... potentially to an area that was about seven hours away,' Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie told CNN on Saturday.
Mitchells did not say where the three planned to go after the escape - she was just told by Matt and Sweat that it was about a seven-hour drive away, according to Wylie.

'Joyce Mitchell ditched the plan to pick up the two inmates partly because she loves her husband and she didn't want to do this to him,' Wylie said.
It appears, however, that Mitchell and the prisoners had rehearsed the escape.
'From interviews with other inmates, there is an indication the two convicts had cell phones before they escaped,' he said. 'But we have no proof of these cell phones.'

As Mitchell, who pleaded not guilty on Friday, the escapees continued to elude authorities. Armed police swarm upstate New York in their eighth day of the search.

Mitchell's family members have spoken out to say that they support her.
'We will love and support her no matter what. Not even that situation will bring our family down. That's all we have to say about this,' Paige Mitchell, Mitchell's daughter-in-law, said on Saturday.

'Let's find these two idiots so our community can calm down,' she added. 'That needs to be the focus right now, finding these monsters and locking them back up in a cell so they can live out the remainder of their days, hopefully in solitary confinement.'

As the search for the men continued, squadrons of law enforcement swarmed the area with helicopters sweeping overhead as schools were shut down and residents warned to stay indoors.
The search involves more than 500 law enforcement personnel, along with K-9 and aviation units, according to New York State police.

The search forced the cancellation of a fundraiser for the local volunteer fire department at Cadyville. Organizers of the 50th annual Cadyville Field Day say they chose to cancel Saturday's event in the name of public safety.

By late evening on Saturday, about 30 officers emerged from the woods along Route 3, a few miles south of the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora. More officers lined up on the shoulder waiting to be picked up to take a break before continuing the search before darkness sets in.

New York State Police Maj Charles Guess said that the police force is 'going down every road and following every lead', adding that it's 'getting closer with every step'.

Late on Friday, Mitchell stood with her hands shaking and her lips pressed together to be arraigned at Clinton County Court.

She has now been placed in Rensselaer County Jail - a location strategically picked to ensure none of her former colleagues or associates would be on the premises. Her next court date is on Monday at 8.30am.
Mitchell, a tailor shop instructor at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, was arrested earlier on Friday on charges of aiding the pair in their escape.

At about 11pm, Mitchell was arraigned on counts of promoting prison contraband in the first degree and criminal facilitation in the fourth degree.
Donning a lime green T-shirt and jeans, the bedraggled grandmother trembled and appeared close to tears as she pleaded not guilty to both charges, which carry a maximum prison term of eight years.

She barely looked up as the judge set her bail at a whopping $110,000 cash, or $220,000 bond.
Defense attorney Keith Bruno told the court in Plattsburgh, around a 20-minute drive from the maximum-security prison, that he would address the bail amount at another hearing on Monday.

Mitchell said nothing during her five-minute court appearance, during which she was handcuffed. She nervously clutched a piece of white card in her hands as she denied the counts via Bruno.
The prison staffer is rumored to have had affairs with both Matt and Sweat, before providing them with contraband for their escape, including hacksaw blades, drill bits and goggles fitted with lights.

On Friday night, the court heard that this also included chisels, a punch and a screwdriver bit. She 'knowingly and unlawfully introduced contraband tools and hardware' to the inmates, the court heard.

And she apparently did so 'believing it probable she was rendering aid' to the killers. The hardware was 'brought into the prison on about May 1', so Matt and Sweat would have had it for only weeks.

Mitchell had been questioned for nearly a week at a police station in Malone prior to her arraignment.

The contraband she allegedly gave Matt and Sweat did not include the power tools used by the two men to cut holes in a cell walls and a steam pipe at the prison, before they escaped via a manhole.

Amid the allegations concerning Mitchell, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has said that prison employees found helping inmates to escape will be dealt with severely in court, according to CBS.
This came as Guess delivered a stark message for Matt and Sweat at a press conference: 'We're coming for you and we'll not stop until you are caught.'
Speaking on Friday night, Major Guess also said the prisoners - who remain on the run for a seventh day following their Shawshank Redemption-style breakout - will be 'cold, wet, tired and hungry', having encountered the same 'challenging' weather conditions that police have also had to deal with.
And he said Mitchell's arrest is 'one large piece of the puzzle in our quest to find' Matt and Sweat.

'Our interviews with Joyce Mitchell have been fruitful and productive. We're satisfied and we would not have charged her today if we were not satisfied with the productivity of those interviews,' he said.
If convicted of her charges, Mitchell could face up to seven years in prison for 'providing material assistance' to the murderers, and one year for criminal facilitation - a total of eight years in prison.

Still on the run: Mitchell, an industrial training supervisor at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, reportedly supplied prisoners Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, with prohibited tools

Earlier on Friday, an explosive new report emerged revealing that Mitchell has admitted smuggling the hacksaw blades, drill bits and lights to Matt and Sweat, whom she had befriended inside the prison.
The married staffer also providing the killers with a cell phone

Mitchell's family has said she would not have helped the convicts break out.
On Friday, an extra 300 law enforcement officers were searching for Matt and Sweat, increasing the total number from 500 to over 800, including personnel from state, local and federal agencies.
The added help is needed to give search teams proper rest, officials said. The search for the killers is now focused on an area a few miles south of the village of Dannemora.

Troopers said more than 700 leads have been received since the breakout was discovered by guards.
During Friday night's press conference, Major Guess said that 'hundreds of personnel' are in 'yards of residences conducting grid searches'. 'We will not stop searching until it's done,' he told reporters.

He also gave his 'heartfelt thanks' for the 'outpouring' of support from businesses, universities and schools in the area over the past week, as well as to those who have donated food to searchers.
In relation to Mitchell, he added that the prison worker may be charged with other counts as the manhunt and investigation unfold - but that she 'represents just one fraction of the investigation'

According to Gov Cuomo, investigators are 'talking to several people who may have facilitated in the escape', which came to light during routine prison rounds at around 5.30am last Saturday.

Officials are 'learning more and more information each day from [Mitchell], as far as establishing a timeline on how this process occurred and what her involvement was,' Gov Cuomo said.

Mitchell supplied hacksaw blades, drill bits and goggles with lights for the escapees, both of whom she may have had relationships with. The tools were bought in the last few months.

A police document seen revealed on Friday that Mitchell's husband who works at the prison, Lyle Mitchell, may have also had a role in the escape. He has not been charged.

Extraordinary escape: Corrections officers walk along the road outside the high walls of Clinton Correctional Facility, while a different corrections officer looks out from a guard tower at the prison on Saturday

Sweat and Matt, who has been described by a retired cop as 'well-endowed', used an electric saw and a sledgehammer to make their escape route at the prison, the newspaper reported.
They cut holes in the back of their cells, lowered themselves to a catwalk and hot-wired lighting outlets to power a hand-saw to cut into a 24-inch steam pipe that led to a sewer system.

Matt and Sweat popped out of a manhole outside of the 40ft prison walls on a quiet street in the village of Dannemora and fled. They potentially had up to a seven-hour head start on police.

Despite a week-long search involving hundreds of officers, bloodhounds and marine and helicopter units across three states, the prisoners have not been found.
They have already far outlasted the typical period of 'freedom' for prison escapees - six hours.

On Thursday, it emerged that Mitchell was questioned about an 'inappropriate relationship' with Sweat within the past year. The details of Mitchell and Sweat's alleged relationship are unclear.

The New York State Department of Corrections ultimately found there insufficient evidence to take action against Mitchell

Mitchell supplied hacksaw blades, drill bits and goggles with lights for the escapees, according to one report

It had also emerged that Mitchell, who is married to another prison worker and has an adult son, reportedly told investigators that Matt had 'made her feel special' and she 'thought it was love'.

Mitchell, an instructor at the prison tailor shop, where the two convicts worked, allegedly planned to be the getaway driver for Matt and Sweat, but got cold feet at the last minute.

She reportedly was expected to meet the pair at midnight the night they broke out of the prison and leave with the escapees.

'It's basically, show up down at the powerhouse at around midnight, and pick them up. As we all know now she failed to show up,' Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie said on Saturday. 'Pick them up, leave the area.'
'The three of them were going to move on together. That was the plan,' Wylie said.

Instead, Mitchell checked herself into hospital for nerves on Saturday, the day of the elaborate escape.
Matt, who has a history of escape attempts', wooed Mitchell for months and established a relationship in which she agreed to drive the getaway car, it is alleged.

'She thought it was love,' one official said. The killer was 'very handsome and, in all frankness, very well endowed', retired detective David Bentley told the New York Post this week.
Mitchell also told investigators that Matt made her feel 'special'

Mr Wylie told CNN on Thursday that Mitchell 'comes in and each day has been providing... additional information that's assisted the investigators'.

The Clinton County prosecutor said Mitchell is under surveillance but not in protective custody.
According to officials, Mitchell's statements to police about the escape plan were incriminating enough to result in her being indicted before she was finally charged on Friday evening.
The prison worker's son Tobey Mitchell, who had a baby with his partner earlier this year, told NBC on Wednesday that his mother would not have helped the inmates to escape.

A longtime neighbor also was stunned by the suspicions swirling around Mitchell.
'I just can't believe she'd do something so stupid,' neighbor Sharon Currier said. She said Mitchell is always happy to help people, but she's 'not somebody who's off the wall'.

She said Mitchell is a former town tax collector in Dickinson, a community around one hour's drive from Dannemora.
Quick with a laugh and skilled at sewing, she has worked for five or more years at the prison, where her husband also works, Currier said

Gov Cuomo said that the law will come down hard on any prison system employee who crosses the line. 'If you do it, you will be convicted, and then you'll be on the other side of the prison that you've been policing, and that is not a pleasant place to be,' Cuomo said on Friday.

Mitchell, who is married to another prison worker Lyle Mitchell, earns a salary of $57,700 for the state corrections department job she has held since 2008.

State Police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico said at a press conference on Wednesday: 'She befriended the inmates and may have had some sort of role in assisting them.'

Matt was serving 25 years to life for the 1997 kidnap, torture and hacksaw dismemberment of Matt's 76-year-old former boss, whose body was found in pieces in a river.

Matt and an accomplice stuffed William Rickerson in a car trunk in his pajamas and drove around with him for 27 hours because he wouldn't tell them the location of large sums of money he was believed to have.
According to testimony, Matt bent back the elderly man's fingers until they broke and later snapped Rickerson's neck with his bare hands.

After the killing, Matt fled to Mexico, where he killed a man outside a bar.
Sweat was doing life without parole for his part in the 2002 killing of sheriff's Deputy Kevin Tarsia, who was shot 15 times and run over after discovering Sweat and two accomplices transferring stolen guns between vehicles.

Mitchell's ex-husband had told Daily Mail Online on Wednesday that she was 'serial cheat'.
The besotted prison worker - known as 'Tillie' - had at least two affairs during her five-year first marriage, her then-husband has confirmed to Daily Mail Online.
'Sure she cheated on me,' 51-year-old farmer Tobey Premo said.

And Premo, 51, her sweetheart at St. Regis Falls High School confirmed she had cheated on him with Lyle Mitchell, who she then went on to marry.
'I was devastated,' he said. 'I kissed her on the bus when I was 16 and I liked her ever after.'

Premo said he and Mitchell — then Joyce Clookey — were together for 13 years, but only five as man and wife. They divorced in 1995 when their son Tobey was just one.

'She was with me for 13 years - maybe that's all she can take,' said Premo, who now lives in Massena, a town on the Canadian border, an hour west of Mitchell's home in Dickinson Center.
'She cheated on me, so I could see her falling for someone in prison,' he said.

During their marriage, Tillie worked at the now-shuttered Tru-Stitch slipper factory in Bombay, New York. Former workmate Nancy Hewitt called her a 'troublemaker' in an exclusive interview with Daily Mail Online.

Another former colleague revealed how Tilley and Lyle, a mechanic at the factory, had been caught having sex on railway tracks outside the plant.

'I don't know anything about that,' said Premo. 'But then I was her husband, so she wouldn't have been telling me. But I do know she had an affair with another guy, he was a cutter at the factory.'

He says he first heard that she is suspected of being involved in the prison break-out on television.

'I thought that can't be her, then they put her Facebook picture up, and I realized it was.'
He said he has also had no contact with his ex-wife. 'I wouldn't call her a bad apple - I really don't know her. I have only seen her once since we signed the divorce papers,' he said.

Former detective Bentley was one of the team who arrested Matt in 2007.
The retired detective shared a photo showing a younger Matt in prison during the 1980s.
In the disturbing image, the killer is pictured wearing a correction officer's uniform shirt and holding a night stick. Beneath the photo, Matt has scribbled: 'Who said I can't escape this place!'

In an episode that aired on Thursday Bentley said he feared for his life now that Matt is free.

THE HUNT: ON THE SIXTH DAY,THE DESPERATE SEARCH FOR ESCAPED MURDERERS CONTINUES

DAY ONE

The alert is raised early on Saturday morning after convicted killers David Sweat, 34, and Richard Matt, 48, were discovered missing from their cells during 5.30am rounds. Both cells, located on the same side of the 'honor block' at Clinton Correctional Facility in upstate New York, had neat squares cut from the cement walls behind the beds.

Cop killer Sweat, who was serving life without parole and Matt, who had 25 years to life for murder and torture, had stuffed their beds with clothes to fool guards and left behind a taunting note: 'Have a nice day.' The maximum security Clinton Correctional Facility sits in Dannemora, high in the mountainous Adirondacks region, some 25 miles from the Canadian border.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered a 200-person strong manhunt across upstate New York and a $100,000 reward leading to the killers' capture.

DAY TWO

The escape from the 3,000 inmate state prison quickly raises suspicions of an inside job after it becomes clear the two men used power tools to cut holes in their cells and through a sewage pipe.
Investigators begin questioning prison workers and outside contractors to try to find out who may have supplied the power tools. Contractors have been doing extensive renovations at the 170-year-old prison, a hulking, fortress-like structure that looms over Dannemora's main street.
Prison supervisor Joyce Mitchell is identified as a person of interest and is taken in for questioning.

DAY THREE

Some 300 leads flood into investigators in the 48 hours since the prison break was reported.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/...4045996593.jpg

Police shared images of tattoos on the two escapees. Matt is pictured on the top row and Sweat below

State police and other state, federal and local law enforcement agencies form a joint task force to take on each lead individually. Forest Rangers, U.S. Marshals and the FBI assist in grid searches of region around the prison to ensure a thorough search of the ground.
More than 100 personnel which includes uniform, investigative and specialty units are placed on the ground to follow leads.

Road blocks with search dogs are set up across the region. More than 250 corrections and law enforcement officers are involved in the region and additional investigative services are being applied statewide and nationally.
Reports emerge that the two convicts could be heading for the Canadian border or even as far away as Mexico.

DAY FOUR

Reports of two men walking along a road brought hundreds of law enforcement officers to a small town in the Adirondack foothills for a sweep that seemingly turned up no signs of two killers.
State police said leads continued to be generated and there would be an increased police presence in the area.

The hunt focused on Tuesday on Willsboro, New York, close to Lake Champlain, after residents reported seeing a couple of men walking on a road late on Monday during a driving rainstorm.
Searchers walked shoulder-to-shoulder, wearing bulletproof vests and carrying sidearms as they went through hilly woods, fields and swamps, checking every home, garage, shed and outbuilding, then yelling, 'Clear!' when there were no signs of the inmates.
By early evening, it appeared the sweep had come up empty, and there was no confirmation from police that the escaped convicts had been there.

State Police said more than 400 corrections and other law enforcement officers were in the area and planned to go door to door, checking homes and seasonal camps.

DAY FIVE

Law enforcement announced early on Wednesday that they will be searching homes in the village of Dannemora.
These searches were not the result of a new lead, police said, but law enforcement were retracing steps made early in the investigation.

Residents were made aware that an increased police presence would be in the area. Members of the public who see anything unusual upon arriving at their residence or seasonal homes were asked to contact law enforcement immediately.

The State Police have deployed all available assets in an effort to ensure the safety of the public. The public were told not to hesitation to report any suspicious activity; that includes any sign of a trespass, burglary or vehicle larceny.
State Police said Wednesday they have bought space on more than 50 digital billboards in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania featuring pictures and information about the two escapees.

DAY SIX

The manhunt for two escaped killers intensified on Thursday as law enforcement zeroed in on an area of rough, swampy terrain around three miles from the prison.
Bloodhounds picked up the scent of the escapees this morning when officers came across an area where the men had been reportedly 'bedding down'. A boot print and food wrappers were found at the scene.

Squadrons of law enforcement swarmed the area with helicopters sweeping overhead as schools were shut down and residents warned to stay indoors.
A preliminary report on Thursday also revealed a possible sighting of the two escapees from a cab driver who dropped them off at 30th Street Station in Philadelphia.

DAY SEVEN

On Friday, an extra 300 law enforcement officers were searching for Matt and Sweat, increasing the total number from 500 to over 800, including personnel from state, local and federal agencies.
The added help is needed to give search teams proper rest, officials said. The search for the killers is now focused on an area a few miles south of the village of Dannemora. Troopers said more than 700 leads have been received since the breakout was discovered by guards early Saturday morning.

  • Sweat is in a critical but stable condition. He was wearing head-to-toe camouflage, was found two miles from Canadian border
  • Was taken to the small Alice Hyde Medical Center, then put in an ambulance bound for Albany for surgery
  • Local residents cheered as the ambulance drove off. One woman shouted: 'We got you b*****d!'
  • Daily Mail UK, 29 June 2015

David Sweat is waking up chained to an Albany hospital bed in critical but stable condition on Monday morning after his 'Shawshank'-style prison break and subsequent weeks on the lam were ended by two bullets on Sunday afternoon.

Found in the cop killer's possession after he was taken down by State Police Sergeant Jay Cook was a bag of tricks that helped him stay just inches ahead of the law for an astonishing three weeks: it contained maps, tools, bug repellent and Pop Tarts, Governor Andrew Cuomo revealed on Monday.

The governor said it was not clear whether Sweat escaped Clinton Correctional Facility with these supplies or if he stockpiled them while he was on the run from the police.

Indeed, the fugitive was hit twice in the torso on Sunday afternoon when Cook spotted him brazenly jogging down the road wearing head-to-toe camouflage in Constable, New York - a sleepy little town just two miles south of the Canadian border.

Sweat is one of two prisoners who escaped from a maximum-security New York prison three weeks ago. The other escapee, Richard Matt, was killed in a confrontation with law enforcement on Friday.
The daring prison break from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora was 'done with facilitators, it was done with cooperators,' Cuomo said.
'This was 'Cool Hand Luke' meets 'Shawshank Redemption,' he said on MSNBC's 'Morning Joe.'

On Sunday, havoc briefly broke out in Constable as many of the 1,300 authorities on the ground in search of Sweat finally closed in on the fugitive.
Sgt. Cook, a 21-year veteran and firearms instructor, got out of his vehicle to question the man, who 'turned as if to say 'what do you want from me,'' according to police. It was then that Cook recognized Sweat.
Told to stop, Sweat broke into a run. When he got near a line of trees, almost vanishing from sight, Cook opened fire.

Sweat was treated by first responders at the scene on Coveytown Road outside an Amish farm, then transported to Alice Hyde Medical Center, a small hospital in Malone, New York, just 40 miles from Clinton Correctional Facility where he broke free on June 6.
At 6.25pm, Sweat, with an IV in his arm, was wheeled out of the emergency unit in a stable condition and placed in an ambulance bound for the larger Albany Medical Center, 200 miles south.

The ambulance, with a heavy escort of state police vehicles, left eight minutes later. Local residents cheered as he left. 'We got you b*****d,' shouted one woman.
He is expected to be in intensive care for at least three days if doctors are able to stabilize his condition, Dr Dennis McKenna of Albany Medical Center told reporters on Sunday night.

Sweat at first appeared stable after he was shot, but the murderer's condition deteriorated after being flown 200 miles to Albany Medical Center's trauma unit.
Emergency, trauma, intensive care, radiology and vascular surgery specialists have been involved in his care.

'There is no concern at all for other patients' safety,' McKenna said, adding: 'His treatment will be consistent with any other multi-trauma patient we receive.'

Sweat's capture came two days after his fellow fugitive, double killer Richard Matt, was shot dead by police after leaving a clumsy trail of candy wrappers and liquor bottles in his wake as they fled authorities.

It is believed they were using black pepper stolen from hunting cabins to throw police dogs off their scent.

Addressing reporters on Sunday night, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said: 'The nightmare is finally over... these were really dangerous, dangerous men.'

Forty miles: Constable, New York is two miles south of the Canadian border and around 40 miles from Dannemora, where David Sweat escaped from Clinton Correctional on June 6. Constable is around 16 miles from where Matt was shot two days before Sweat's capture

It is a triumph, he said, that law enforcement will be able to question Sweat to build detailed picture of how he escaped, where he was for 23 days, and how he eluded authorities.

'This is the first escape in 100 years,' Cuomo emphasized, describing the 'extraordinary' nature of the prison break that prompted an 'unprecedented coming together of law enforcement'.
'If you were writing a movie plot they would say that this was overdone,' he said.

'Hack saws providing by a facilitator in ground up meat, carving a hole to get to catwalks, through a labyrinth of tunnels where they came across a tool box. One of the prisoners knew how to pick the lock, they used the tools then to cut the pipes and break the chains... It was extraordinary circumstances.'

The pair had been present at the nighttime count on June 5, but by 5.30am on June 6 were missing from their adjoining cells in Clinton Correctional's A Block.
They had squeezed through holes neatly cut in the steel wall behind their beds, penetrated a brick wall and a steam pipe, and emerged from a manhole outside the prison's 40-foot wall - prompting comparisons to the blockbuster movie Shawshank Redemption.
'Have a nice day!' they smirked in a note left along the way.

Twenty three days later, Cuomo assured the public that investigations are ongoing, and accomplices will be prosecuted with the full force of the law, before adding: 'Today ends with good news.'
'New Yorkers are tough,' he remarked, 'They stepped up to the challenge and the fear of having murderers on the loose in your back yard. It's nice when it ends well.

'We are going to have a celebration at an appropriate time. We couldn't have had a better ending. We wish it didn't happen in the first place but if it had to happen, this is the way you'd want it to end.'

Since Sweat's capture, it has become clear that he may have been using pepper from shakers in hunting cabins to throw dogs off his scent - a common household trick favored by drug smugglers, and dramatized in the 1967 movie Cool Hand Luke.

'We did have difficulty tracking so, you know, it was fairly effective in that respect,' admitted New York State Superintendent Joseph D'Amico.

PICTURED: HERO STATE TROOPER WHO SHOT AND INJURED SECOND 'SHAWSHANK' ESCAPEE DAVID SWEAT

By Sophie Jane Evans

This is the heroic state trooper who brought down the second 'Shawshank' prison escapee David Sweat following a 23-day manhunt - two days after the murderer's accomplice was shot dead.

Sergeant Jay Cook, 47, of New York State police, shot and injured Sweat, 35, after he spotted him 'jogging' down a road in Constable, around two miles south of the Canadian border, on Sunday.

The escaped killer - who has been on the run from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora since June 6 - was rushed to a hospital in Malone, bleeding heavily from his injuries, but alive.

Cook, a 21-year veteran from Troop B who has two daughters aged 16 and 17 with his wife Carrie, was alone when he opened fire on Sweat at about 3.20pm, shooting him twice in the torso, officials said.

End of the manhunt: Cook (pictured) had spotted Sweat 'jogging' down the road near Route 30, dressed in head-to-toe camouflage, officials said. The escapee had then broken into a run, prompting Cook to shoot him

He had spotted Sweat 'jogging' down the road near Route 30, dressed in head-to-toe camouflage, officials said. The escapee had then broken into a run, prompting Cook to shout at him to stop.
When he refused, the trooper, also a firearms instructor, had started shooting, a source close to the case told ABC News. Footage from the scene shows Sweat sitting on the ground covered in blood.
On Sunday night, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo congratulated Cook on his 'great police work'.
'I had the chance to speak to Sgt. Cook and congratulate him on his great police work,' he said at a press conference, adding that the trooper 'knew the area very well' and acted 'courageously'.
Cuomo added: 'I said to Sgt. Cook, who has two daughters, 'go home tonight and tell your daughters that you're a hero'. This was an extraordinary situation in many ways.'
Sgt. Cook's mother, Judy Cook told WPTZ her son is an avid hunter and a 'good shot'.
She said: 'We're glad it's all over and we're glad that Jay caught him before he got to the border.
'It's been so nervewracking not knowing where these two men were.
'I couldn't wish for a better son. He is so hardworking.'

Clinton County Sheriff David Favro said: 'This whole escape has been likened to a movie. What better ending could there be than to have a local state trooper end it all. It was a tremendous piece of policing by Sgt Cook.
'The best way to describe the feeling is like after junior prom. You get all hyped up, buying the tux, going to the dance and then at the end of it all you suddenly realize how fatigued you are. We are all fatigued.'

One New York State trooper told Daily Mail Online outside the Malone hospital: 'We're all feeling good. We said we'd get him and we got him.'

Franklin County Sheriff Kevin Mulverhill who predicted on Friday that the search would be over within 48 hours, said: 'Once Matt was killed you could sense that things were moving toward a successful conclusion.'
Mulverhill added that the foul weather had helped in the search: 'He was cold, wet and uncomfortable. He made mistakes.'

The search has courted the attention and assistance of locals across upstate New York - and even renowned TV personality Dog The Bounty Hunter.

Dog, real name Duane Chapman, has apparently been in the area with law enforcement for days.
Following Sweat's capture he was on the scene to give his version of events.
According to Dog, Sweat was spotted cycling past a group of teenagers at a graduation party - a rumor which police have dismissed.

He said: 'So Sweat's captured... this is all allegedly: two kids at a graduation party had seen a guy riding a bicycle... And I hope this is a true story because those two kids now have a bank account. And they reported it, and the cops were in the area...'

Supt D'Amico insists Sweat was on foot and that Sweat was captured because he was spotted by Sgt Cook, not a member of the public.

WHAT NEXT FOR DAVID SWEAT?

David Sweat, 35, has been transported to Albany Medical Center for surgery after being shot twice in the torso.
He had been serving a life sentence - with no chance of parole - for shooting a sheriff's deputy 22 times then running him over with a car.
Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie said Sweat would be facing more charges, including felony escape and promoting contraband in a prison which could add 7 more years to his sentence.
'But as he is serving life without parole, anything we add on isn't going to make much difference,' he said.
Wylie said there is no reason to think that Sweat would return to the Clinton Correctional Facility from where he escaped, but is more likely to go to another maximum security prison in the state

It is unclear whether the tip was deemed useful enough to merit the $50,000 reward New York State Police were offering.

The Amish dairy farmer who owns the land where Sweat was shot and captured says she heard gunfire from her house but didn't think much of it until the police cars and ambulance started streaming in.
Verba Bontrager, who has run her family's dairy farm in Constable for the last nine years, says David Sweat was caught just feet from an electrified fence where the cows graze.
She said she was chatting with visitors inside when she heard two gunshots. Her children and a family friend then went outside and heard from a trooper that Sweat was caught.

She said her children had been home alone earlier, and even though she knew police were looking for Sweat, she never thought to be worried. Now, she says, they're all a little shaken.

Local resident Jeffrey Robinson was driving from Constable when he saw the ambulance taking Sweat to Alice Hyde at around 4pm after being shot, and several police cars speed up behind him.
'We pulled over, the Constable ambulance came whizzing by' he said.

Robinson followed the ambulance to Alice Hyde Medical Center where the injured Sweat was offloaded.
'We'll be celebrating tonight,' said Robinson who had been in Constable at a graduation party.
'Everyone here is very relieved.'

A law enforcement official told that Sweat was bleeding badly and had suffered 'life-threatening wounds' before being taken to the hospital for surgery.

The number of boots on the ground in search of Sweat had since increased to 1,300 in the densely wooded expanses just south of the Canadian border.
The added men on the ground, aided by aerial as well as K-9 units, had fanned out across some 22-square-miles around the towns of Malone and Duane

Smiling: Franklin County Sheriff Kevin Mulverhill (pictured before Sweat's capture) was confident Sweat would be caught by Tuesday

Earlier, New York State Police released details of Richard Matt's autopsy on Sunday, two days after the 'Shawshank'-style escapee was discovered surrounded by empty bottles of liquor in a Malone, New York, cabin.
He was shot three times in the head.

Officials say Matt also had bug bites on his legs, blisters and minor abrasions that would be expected for someone who had been living in the woods. Toxicology results are still pending.

Matt was shot and killed by a member of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Tactical Unit on Friday.
He and another inmate escaped from a maximum-security prison near the Canadian border on June 6.

More than 1,200 officers spent the night standing guard around a three-square-mile parameter in Malone, New York, as State Police insisted they had the surviving escapee 'contained'.
It was based on their assumption that Sweat was traveling with fellow fugitive Richard Matt, who was shot and killed by law enforcement nearby on Friday afternoon.

Richard Matt was killed by a border patrol team on Friday afternoon after they heard him cough in the bushes next to a cabin they were searching.

Thus ended a three-week manhunt for the convicted murderer, who left a sloppy trail of candy wrappers, finger prints, bottles of liquor and soiled boxer shorts in his wake.

According to a detective, officers strongly suspect Matt was drunk when police eventually tracked him down and shot him dead on Friday afternoon.

The 49-year-old was likely sick and miserable, officials believe after finding his DNA on soiled underwear, an empty bottle of rum, and half-drunk grape-flavored gin.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/...5412584072.jpg

One of the bottles, they believe, had been opened and consumed just a few hours before Matt broke his own cover by clearing his throat - leading officers to shoot and kill him.
Conversely, Sweat had been almost untraceable.

The last piece of concrete evidence officers found bearing Sweat's DNA was in a cabin last Saturday, where the two fugitives hid out. However, police believe he had also stolen food, drinks and clothing from the cabins. When he was shot, he was wearing a Realtree camouflage shirt and pants stolen from one of the cabins.

Matt and Sweat used tools smuggled inside frozen hamburger meat to escape from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York - around 47 miles from Lake Titus.

As the search continued, New York governor Andrew Cuomo rejoined the officers to deliver a press conference on Friday night.
He said: 'You never want to see anyone lose their life, but I would remind people that Mr Matt was an escaped murderer. Mr Matt killed two people who we know about.'

Matt was traced on Friday after he tried to carjack a camper van at gunpoint at 1pm. D'Amico told reporters: 'Late Wednesday night we received a report of a break-in of a cabin off Route 41 in the town of Malone. The screen was cut and the window was broken into We recovered evidence from that break-in that indicated Matt was present at that scene.
'We got into the cabin, there was the smell of gunpowder and we realized a weapon had been fired.

ONE KILLED AND DISMEMBERED HIS BOSS WITH HIS BARE HANDS, THE OTHER PUMPED 22 BULLETS INTO A SHERIFF'S DEPUTY THEN RAN HIM OVER: THE GRISLY STORIES BEHIND RICHARD MATT AND DAVID SWEAT

Richard Matt, 49, and David Sweat, 35, were both serving life sentences in Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, for murder.
The pair had been present at the nighttime count on June 5, but by 5.30am on June 6 were missing from their adjoining cells.

They squeezed through holes neatly cut in the steel wall behind their beds, penetrated a brick wall and a steam pipe, and emerged from a manhole outside the prison's 40-foot wall - prompting comparisons to the blockbuster movie Shawshank Redemption.
'Have a nice day!' they smirked in a note left along the way.

Police believe they were heading for Canada on Friday when Matt was shot. Sweat was shot and captured alive on Sunday.

Sweat was sentenced to life with no possibility of parole after pleading guilty to the 2002 murder of a sheriff's deputy. He made a plea deal to avoid the death penalty.

He admitted to pumping 22 bullets into Deputy Kevin Tarsia before running him over. Previously, he served time for an attempted burglary.

Unlike Matt, who left a trail of candy wrappers and footprints, Sweat left few traces in his wake.

David Sweat was denied parole after admitting to shooting a deputy 22 times then driving over him in 2002. Richard Matt killed his former boss with his bare hands then dismembered him and threw him in a river, then killed a man in Mexico, in 1997

Chilling: Matt and Sweat left this note behind them after through holes neatly cut in the steel wall behind their beds

Matt marked his 49th birthday while on the run with Sweat.

He was serving 25 years-to-life for killing and dismembering his former boss then fleeing to Mexico, where he killed again, in 1997.

Police said Matt was under the impression 72-year-old William Rickerson had money he could steal.
He broke Rickerson's fingers, drove around with him in his truck, then broke his neck with his bare hands, dismembering him, and threw him in a river.

He then fled to Mexico, where he was arrested and jailed for killing a man outside a bar.

In 2007, he was extradited to America, convicted of second-degree murder, and jailed in Clinton Correctional.

Matt has a history of prison breaks and fleeing state custody, dating back to when he was 13 years old and ran away from a group home in Allegany State. Years later, he climbed over the fence of Erie County Correctional Facility, where he was serving a one-year sentence for assault. It took four days to track him down.

According to a former Clinton Correctional inmate, Matt was planning to commit suicide after his last appeal was denied.

'Also there were indications that someone recently had been there and had fled out the back door.
'As we were doing the ground search in the area there was movement detected by officers on the ground, what they believed to be coughs, so they knew they were dealing with humans as opposed to wildlife and a tactical team from Customs and Border Protection met up with Matt in the woods, challenged him and he was shot dead by Border Patrol at that time.'

The shotgun was recovered at the scene, which officers believe Matt stole from one of the two cabins he raided this week.

D'Amico said the plan had been to take both men alive but the Border Patrol team had given Matt that chance but he had refused to comply with their orders.
But he said he did not have full details of what went on when the killer was challenged.

'We will be taking statements from the team that was involved in the shooting,' he added.

Matt's half brother Wayne Schimpf said he was relieved at the outcome. 'Right now I still can't think of him as the Rick that I knew, I can only think of him as the man who threatened to kill me and has killed other people and has escaped,' he said.
After learning he had been shot, he admitted his first thought was: 'Thank God this can finally end for me and my family.'

Schimpf testified at Matt's 1997 trial for the murder of William Rickerson and always feared he would escape.

After the slaying Matt told Schimpf he was planning to go to Mexico, and would kill him if he didn't hand over the keys to his van.

Sweat was serving life with no possibility of parole after being found guilty of pumping 22 bullets into a sheriff's deputy before running him over.

Sweat's mother also gave an emotional interview hours after her murderer son was shot and captured by police.
Speaking to Time Warner Cable News, Pamela Sweat said she was relieved that her 35-year-old son had been caught.

She tearfully added that she had not watched any TV coverage of her son over the past few weeks - but he would not have had any luck had he turned up at her house in Conklin, outside Binghamton.

She said: 'My son knows if he would have came here, I would have knocked him out and had them guys take him to jail by themselves. That's just the way I am.'

Ms Sweat revealed that her son had been badly behaved from an early age - trying to hit his father on the head with a baseball at the age of nine.
She said he had 'got mad' after his father had brought him a fishing pole and tackle box that were not new.

In response, his father had 'told him to get downstairs or he was going to throw him down'.
'[Sweat] went in the bedroom... took a baseball, and threw it through the window, hoping it would hit his dad, and because it didn't, he broke his new TV that he just got for his birthday,' she said.

She added that in subsequent years, her son 'always got in trouble', 'Every time he did I would grab him by the ear and take him to the police station,' she said. Once, he even took a knife into school.

He was imprisoned for life in 2002 after murdering Broome County Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Tarsia.

The search for the inmates had been 'really rough' on her and her relatives, Ms Sweat said, leaving her unable to sleep at night and forced to see a psychiatrist weekly.

'It was really rough. I could hardly sleep at night. Everytime one of the cars would move, I'd be jumpy... just hoping that he would turn himself in,' she said, tears forming at the corners of her eyes.

''It's taken a big toll. It felt like a big [weight] off my shoulders that he was captured and he is alive.'
She added that her son 'should have just stayed' in the maximum-security prison.
'He's been in jail all this time. He should have just stayed there,' she said.

And when asked if she had kept up-to-date with the TV coverage surrounding the manhunt, she replied that she does not have cable TV, and instead, heard the details from her loved ones.

'ACCOMPLICES': WHO ARE PRISON WORKERS JOYCE MITCHELL AND GENE PALMER?

Joyce Mitchell, 51, and Gene Palmer, 57, are charged with helping Matt and Sweat escape.

JOYCE MITCHELL

Mitchell, a married grandmother, faces up to eight years in jail if found guilty of 'providing material assistance' to the murderers.
She worked in the tailor shop at the prison - where her husband Lyle also works.

It is believed she had affairs with both Matt and Sweat, who offered her drugs to kill her husband. Her co-worker claims Mitchell would 'giggle' around Matt, sneak him food, and take him into a cupboard for 30-minute sex sessions.

And she allegedly agreed to be their getaway driver after they 'charmed her' into smuggling in tools.

Speaking to the Today show, Lyle Mitchell said he had no idea of his wife's involvement until she was called in for questioning when Matt and Sweat escaped on June 6.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/...5422105847.jpg

Lyle Mitchell (pictured) said he has since learned that Matt and Sweat offered his wife drugs as a bribe and told her to kill him

He recalled: 'An investigator comes out and says, 'Mr Mitchell, your wife is more involved than what she's letting on'.
'I asked her what was going on. She said, 'I did some things… and I got over my head'. I didn't know what to say. I was just… disbelief, shock.'

He went on: 'She said, 'I've got something else to tell you... their plan was they want to kill you'.'

According to Mr Mitchell, his wife 'backed out' of being the getaway driver for Matt and Sweat at the last minute because she could not bear to hurt her husband, and realized she was in 'over her head'.

He said he is in no doubt the men would have killed both of them if she had gone through with the plan.

GENE PALMER

Palmer, a rock-guitar-playing guard, allegedly smuggled needle-nosed pliers and a flat-head screwdriver into the prison inside frozen meat for Matt and Sweat.

He also allegedly let Matt and Sweat inside a prohibited catwalk area to cook hot food. They used this route to escape.

In a statement to state police investigators, Palmer said Matt gave him 'elaborate paintings and information on the illegal acts that inmates were committing within the facility,' in exchange for 'benefits,' including, 'paint, paintbrushes, movement of inmates, hamburger meat, altering of electrical boxes in the catwalk areas.'

Palmer is charged with first-degree promoting prison contraband, a felony, two counts of tampering with physical evidence, also a felony, and one count of official misconduct, a misdemeanor.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/...5422105565.jpg

He now lives with his long-term girlfriend Mary (pictured) and is a well-liked member of the community, locals say

Despite the indictment, he has received resounding support from the community, with many describing him as a kind man.
Though married, he has lived with his girlfriend for the past 10 years as his wife Laurie has severe multiple sclerosis.

Gene and Laurie split in 2005 when her condition worsened and she did not wish to burden him.

But Gene refused to divorce her and gave her the three-bedroom, two-bathroom house in Plattsburgh where they lived. He continues to pay her health insurance premiums too.

Now that could be all in danger if, as likely, he loses his job at the Clinton Correctional Facility, where he has worked for 27 years. He is currently on paid administrative leave.

Revealed: This is the cabin where Richard Matt and David Sweat hid from law enforcement after their escape

Ms Sweat was not informed of her son's capture at around 3.20pm, but knew 'something was up' after the guards who had been stationed at her house 'just left'.
She added that she feels other people have 'judged' her family, and she would love to visit her son in prison.

Over the last three weeks, the search has sprawled across northern New York - as far as the Pennsylvania border 360 miles away - before officers traced them back to the Canadian border.
Sheriffs now believe the men did not travel far from the prison, and remained on foot.

On Friday night, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo arrived at 8.30pm to brief reporters on the situation after Matt was shot, and dozens of locals turned up at the State Police Barracks in Malone to hear for themselves what had happened in the woods outside their town.

Cuomo has been heavily ridiculed for turning up at the Clinton prison for a photo op climbing through the same steam pipes that Matt and Sweat used to escape on the day after the break-out.

Prior to their arrests, Matt, came from the Buffalo area. Sweat lived in Binghamton, near the Pennsylvania border.
They got out of the maximum-security prison by cutting through walls in their adjacent cells and then using power tools to get into a maze of steam pipes that lead out to the street.

Prison worker Joyce Mitchell, 51, has been charged with supplying the two men with hacksaw blades, chisels, a punch and a screwdriver bit to help their escape. She allegedly hid them in a 12 inch-by-5 inch-by-2 inch slab of hamburger meat that she then persuaded a guard to take to the two men.

That guard, Gene Palmer, 57, is facing charges himself which are not directly linked to the escape. He is due in court on Monday to plead to a charge of promoting prison contraband, two charges of tampering with evidence, one of official misconduct.

NEW:

David Sweat and Richard Matt originally planned to drive to Mexico with Joyce Mitchell, who never showed. The fugitives instead chose to head north to Canada, but split up five days before Sweat's capture on Sunday.

Sweat was shot twice in the back and captured after a veteran state trooper saw him jogging down a road. He was airlifted to a trauma care facility in Albany, where it was determined he did not need immediate surgery and his condition was upgraded from critical to serious.

David Sweat's condition was upgraded from critical to serious on Monday following the dramatic conclusion of his Shawshank-style prison break on Sunday - when a roving State Trooper shot him twice two miles from the Canadian border.

While Sweat continued to be treated in intensive care - where he is chained to the bed - more details were emerging of the killer's three weeks on the run with fellow inmate Richard Matt.

In Sweat's possession after he was taken down by State Police Sergeant Jay Cook was a bag of tricks that helped him stay just inches ahead of the law, revealed Governor Andrew Cuomo on Monday.
It contained maps, tools, bug repellent and Pop Tarts. It is not clear whether Sweat escaped Clinton Correctional Facility with these supplies or if he stockpiled them while he and Matt were evading police.

However, Cuomo did reveal that the escapees originally planned to flee to Mexico with the help of their alleged accomplice on the inside, Joyce Mitchell. When then the prison employee failed to meet them, however, Cuomo said the fugitives were forced to change plans and head north toward Canada.
