Daily Mail UK, 29 May 2015

Police have released shocking photos of the crate where they say a Missouri man held a woman captive before she escaped and was later shot to death.

James Barton Horn, of Sedalia, was accused of holding Sandra Sutton captive off-and-on for months before she escaped last month.

Sutton and her 17-year-old son, Zachary Wade Sutton, were found shot to death last week at a relative's home in Clinton, where Sutton had gone to live after escaping Horn.

Horn was being sought on kidnapping charges and later for the Suttons' deaths. Police found and killed Horn Saturday in a rural area in western Missouri.

The photos released Thursday showing a crude wooden crate that contained a sleeping bag, water bottle and other items, including a bucket police said held urine and feces.

Horn was shot and killed sometime between 11am and 1pm on Saturday and it's believed a friend or family member may have been helping him stay hidden.

James Barton Horn, 47, was killed during a shootout at JN 'Turkey' Kearn Memorial Wildlife Area in Missouri

Sandra Kay Sutton, 46, and her 17-year-old son Zachary Wade Sutton were found shot dead

He had been considered armed and dangerous,
It was thought the veteran may have been relying on his military training to stay one step ahead of the manhunt

Sonny Lynch, assistant chief of police for the Clinton Police Department, said before Horn's capture:
'He's a veteran of the Marines. 'There's a skill set one might learn that would help him.'

Horn was charged with kidnapping, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon last month but had eluded arrest.

While the manhunt was ongoing, Lynch addressed Horn directly via the media.

Horn was killed at the area in Johnson and Pettis counties on Saturday sometime between 11am and 1pm

Horn was the only suspect in the Suttons' deaths

He said: 'James, if you hear this or if you're listening to this broadcast, we ask that you turn yourself in.
'We would like to talk to you about this incident and clear everything up and hear your side of the story.'

Lynch said both victims appeared to have been shot while Sutton's relatives were at work.
Sutton, Horn and her relatives worked together at a Tyson chicken plant so Horn knew when she and her son would be at the home alone.

The teenager was found dead on the stairs while his mother was discovered in a bedroom.

After the murder, police believe Horn stole Sutton's car from outside the home. The vehicle was later found at Bothwell Regional Health Center in Sedalia.

Authorities surrounded Horn's home in Sedalia early on Thursday and had been looking for him ever since Sutton escaped his home in April and accused him of keeping her captive.

Last month, Sutton told police Horn threatened her in a car with a 'tire jack' after an argument in January and that when they returned home he began building a wooden structure.

She said that Horn forced her to help build it, according to a probable cause statement filed by Sedalia police in the case.

The probable cause statement also said Sutton was allowed to leave the box in the evenings when Horn returned home from work but remained locked in it throughout the day.
When he returned, he sexually abused her, she said.

She managed to escape and run to a neighbor's home on April 30.

Police searched the home and found the box, which they described as 100 inches long, 48 inches wide and 52 inches tall.

A team member from the Missouri Highway Patrol monitored Horn's house in Sedalia, Missouri, on Thursday

The sound-proofed box contained several layers of insulation, padding and sleeping bags, as well as reading material, flash lights and a small air hole inside the wooden box.

After her escape, Sutton was initially placed in protective custody but Lynch said she had never requested the protective custody to continue.

'The fact is we didn't know she was living in our community,' Lynch said.

Horn has a lengthy criminal history, including kidnapping and sexual battery in 1992, when he was 24

In that case, a woman said she awoke a day after breaking up with him to find him inside her home.

Horn had a history of attacking his ex-girlfriends and allegedly kept Sutton locked in a box for months this year

He forced her to have sex with him before tying her up, driving her to a nearby bridge and forcing her to have sex again. He was sentenced and released from custody in 1995, records show.

Then in 1996, after his estranged wife divorced him, he used a ladder to get into the attic of her home before locking her eight-year-old daughter in a closet.

He then raped and kidnapped his estranged wife, stopping to make her take out money from ATMs, Fox4 reported. He threatened to kill her and was eventually found holding a knife to her neck inside a motel room by an FBI SWAT team.

He was sentenced to 12 years and nine months in prison for interstate kidnapping and was released in December 2011.

Zachary was a junior at Clinton High School.

'Zachary was a wonderful young man and a pleasure to be around,' Principal Bryan Pettengill said. 'He will be missed dearly at CHS.'
