Johnny Depp and his wife Amber Heard are expected to fly out of Australia after a government minister threatened to put down their illegal terriers.


The Australian Department of Agriculture said the Yorkshire terriers - named Boo and Pistol - must be removed from the country by Saturday.

Quarantine officers are now expected to interview the Hollywood couple before they leave to investigate whether they purposefully misled customs about the dogs on arrival.

The investigation comes as Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce said it was time the dogs 'buggered off back to the US'.
He added that Depp and Heard might not get the quick escape to the United States they were looking for.
The duo could be forced to put their dogs down anyway if they don't hold the correct permits to re-enter their home country, possibly rendering their pets 'stateless', Mr Joyce said.

'The question is if he breached our laws, then did he follow the correct laws in the US?' the minister said.
'My worry is will the US let them back in? If not, will they have anywhere to go?'

Mr Joyce also revealed the Australian government 'bent over backwards' to get monkeys through biosecurity checks for the set of the latest Pirates of the Caribbean film.

Depp and Heard - who were staying at a rented home in the Gold Coast - were issued a strict warning by the Department of Agriculture on Tuesday, demanding they remove their two terriers from the country within 50 hours or risk having them put down.

'We bent over backwards to get their monkeys in – it was only just recently they had to get monkeys in [for their set] and we had to try and do everything in our power [to get them in],' Mr Joyce told Channel 10.
'So they know what the deal is, and that's why we're a bit miffed by them.

'They know our laws, abide by them.'
Mr Joyce indicated that Depp had intentionally ignored Australian laws, which require animals being brought into the country to be declared.
He said:

'When these corporate jets come in they are supposed to sign a manifest of what is on the plane, what people are on the plane and certainly if they're carrying any dogs.
'I don't know where he had them - in the Louis Vuitton bag,' he jested, adding 'but anyway they've wandered through with them and they probably think that it's fair enough and that they're above the law, but they're not.

'Mr Depp - and god bless him, sexiest man alive and all that, Jack Sparrow – he's got to abide by the laws of the nation otherwise the dogs have got to go.'

The 51-year-old actor and his wife are believed to have transported their pets pooches, Boo and Pistol, from California to Australia on a private jet, arriving on the Gold Coast on April 20.

When asked what will happen if the dogs aren't removed within 50 hours, Mr Joyce said: 'We're going to have to destroy them'.
'That's the deal,' he said during an interview on Thursday. 'And if people think that's a bit harsh, well I'll tell you what harsh is. Harsh is if we let down our guard and ultimately rabies gets into the country.'

He added that issuing the Hollywood star with a penalty was also a possibility.
In another interview with a radio station he added:

'There is a process if you want to bring animals: you get the permits, they go into quarantine and then you can have them.'
'But if we start letting movie stars - even though they've been the sexiest man alive twice - to come into our nation, then why don't we just break the laws for everybody?
'It's time that Pistol and Boo buggered off back to the United States.'

Due to the pets not being declared under requirements stipulated by law, Depp and Heard were told the two dogs might have to be seized by authorities, who would ship the animals back to the US or euthanize them.

On Thursday, the Department of Agriculture released a statement confirming that it became aware of an illegal animal importation earlier in the week.

'A biosecurity officer attended a Gold Coast property on 13 May and found two illegally imported dogs,' it read.

'The Department is now reviewing how the dogs were brought into Australia without an import permit.'
The Brisbane Airport Corporation and Hawkers Aviation, which processes VIP arrivals and departures at the airport, has referred queries regarding the dogs arrivals to Australian Customs.
They confirmed that private jets are subject to the same strict biosecurity requirements as any other aircraft or vessel entering Australia.

The Labor MPs spokesman Brett Chant said the dogs were now in 'home quarantine', but would not say where.
It appeared the pooches had been detained most likely in the couple's home, as Nine News revealed footage of Boo and Pistol in the property's lounge area.

Happy Dogz salon owner Lianne Kent told Daily Mail Australia she was asked if she would groom them when the store was closed.
'I was privileged to do them,' she said. 'The dogs were immaculate and so well groomed already, but I groomed them and gave them a nice little treatment.'

'l feel for the poor buggers, and I feel for him [Johnny] too. I feel sorry for them and what they're going through, but you've got to do the right thing.
'I hope it all goes well for them and nothing happens,' she added.

The Courier Mail reported the pets were not left alone in the store because of 'security reasons'.
The newspaper said the terriers were like Amber's 'little babies' and couldn't be left on their own with strangers.

A spokesperson for Jetpets, a company which specialises in global pet transit revealed bringing any kind of pet into Australia is a long and involved process that can take months.
The spokesman said: 'To import pets to Australia from the USA is a seven-month process.
'Australian houses have very few diseases (such as rabies) so our live animal import regulations are very strict.
'There are many tests and vaccines that must be done on certain dates during the seven months by a government vet.'

Jetpets confirmed these include a microchip, rabies vaccination, general vaccinations and a RNATT (Rabies Antibody Neutralising Titre Test) blood test.
Pets also have to have a RNATT Declaration as well as external and internal parasite treatment, while dogs also have to have a BELL blood test.

The spokesman added: 'Australia require pets to apply for import permits, secure quarantine space and stay in quarantine for ten days upon arrival in Australia prior to being released in to the community.'

Montana Goodie, from Jetpets, said she did not think Depp and Heard had much hope of keeping Boo and Pistol in the country now the authorities were aware the animals had not been brought into within the guidelines.

She said: 'Although we're unsure on what will happen with Johnny Depp, previous experiences similar to this have led to deportation.
'If none of the required seven months of veterinary work have been completed, unfortunately there's no way the dogs will be allowed to stay in Australia.'

Meanwhile public opinion has been running high, many appealing to authorities to let the two dogs stay.
A petition had 600 signatures in the first hour, and is now up to more than 11,000 while the mocking hashtag #WarOnTerrier began circulating on Twitter.

On Thursday, Today Show hosts Lisa Wilkinson and Karl Stefanovic got on board a growing campaign to help save the animals from being exported or put down.
Taking to Instagram they posted a picture of themselves holding up signs with the dogs names on and frowning, although Ms Wilkinson accidentally called one 'Booze' on her placard.
It was accompanied with a caption saying: 'Help us save Johnny Depp's dogs!'

Johnny is in Australia shooting Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales – the fifth installment to the blockbuster franchise.
The flick began pre-production last September, with filming beginning in February.
Producers opted to shoot the blockbuster movie Down Under after the Australian government provided a $20million tax incentive.
