Update HUGE UK Jewel Heist-£14m STILL Missing- ID of Man Who Hid Killer

'70 Boxes' Opened in HUGE Jewel Heist in London UK

Daily Mail UK, 11 April 2015

Detectives investigating a raid on a safe deposit firm in London's famous jewellery quarter believe up to 70 boxes were opened during the burglary.
A gang used heavy equipment to break in to a vault at Hatton Garden Safe Deposit company over the Easter weekend before police were alerted yesterday.

Jewellers spoke of their shock today and raised concerns about security at the building in Hatton Garden, which is described as the centre of London's diamond trade.

Burglars have broken into several boxes in a vault at the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit company

Scotland Yard has not commented on the value of items stolen but one jeweller said some of the boxes were worth up to £2 million each.
Michael Miller, from Knightsbridge in London, said he "felt sick" at the prospect of losing up to £50,000 of jewellery and watches which were uninsured.
He also feared that a £5,000 watch he bought for his son on the day he was born might have been stolen.

"I can't believe this has actually happened," he said.
"I have a collection of watches I was going to give my son and that is irreplaceable. I bought an IWC GST Aquatimer on the day my son was born and I was going to give it to him when he turns 18. They don't make them any more."

Mr Miller, who has held a deposit box with the company for almost 10 years, said he heard the thieves had "broken through a wall and got in that way".
The deposit boxes were used by many jewellers in the area to store their stock at the end of the day, and some could be worth £1 million or £2 million each, he added.

Another security box holder, Norman Bean, claimed a security guard had told him he "wasn't paid enough" to open up and look inside after he heard an alarm go off at the company on Friday.

"He just said he looked in, it all looked fine and I think he just went and that is it," Mr Bean said.
When asked if the company should have better security, he replied: "Of course they should. After six o'clock there is no security at all."

Mr Bean said the owners had not apologised to him or spoken to him at all.
"I am very upset. Mine was only a small amount, but it is still a lot to me," he added.

Neil Duttson, a diamond dealer who buys stones for private clients, said tracing any gems stolen in the heist would be nearly impossible.
He said: "Once diamonds have been re-cut and polished there is no geological map.
"I imagine they will be sat on for six months. You can expect some cheap diamonds will be coming on the market soon."

Officers from the Met's Flying Squad, which deals with bank heists and armed robberies, are investigating the incident.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "This is a slow and painstaking process involving forensic examination, photographing the scene and recovering exhibits in meticulous detail in order to preserve the evidence. Officers anticipate this process to take approximately two days.
"At this stage it is believed that approximately 60-70 safety deposit boxes were opened during the burglary.
"Officers are working closely with Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Ltd to establish the identities of those affected. Police will be contacting victims directly as and when they are identified."

MORE;
Hatton Garden Raid: Police Failed to Respond to Alarm

The Met Police said they received a call on Friday 3 April at 00:21 BST.
Officers are now investigating why the call was given a grade that meant no police response was deemed necessary.
In a statement, the Met Police said: "It is too early to say if the handling of the call would have had an impact on the outcome of the incident."

Meanwhile CCTV footage has emerged which appears to show the group of burglars behind the raid.
The video shows men in high visibility jackets outside the safe deposit building.
One is seen pushing a wheelie bin, which the paper said could have contained the large drill used for breaking a hole through the lift shaft.

The Mirror said the men made two separate visits before leaving on Easter Sunday with the contents of 72 safety deposit boxes in wheelie bins and bags and making a getaway in a white van.
A source told the paper the raid was the work of a professional gang who "planned this job down to every last detail".

Scotland Yard has declined to comment on the footage.

'False alarms'

The Met Police has said items were stolen from at least 56 safety deposit boxes and officers are in the process of contacting the holders.
In total, 72 boxes were opened. Five were vacant and 11 were due to be opened by the company following the non-payment of fees, police said.

BBC Home Affairs Correspondent Danny Shaw said: "It is quite possible - and this is certainly one aspect that the inquiry will be looking at - that there had been so many false alarms previously that the police had decided not to respond to any more alerts.
"There is a police policy that if there are three false alarms in a 12-month period they won't respond anymore when intruder alarms go off and it is possible that may well have been what happened here."
He added that the security guard at the building had also been spoken to by officers.

Police said a heavy duty drill was used to bore holes to access the vault The force said the investigation into why the grade was applied to the phone call would be carried out locally.

Southern Monitoring Alarm Company contacted the Metropolitan Police central communications command and the call was recorded and transferred to the computer aided despatch system.
The call stated a confirmed intruder alarm had been activated at the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Ltd, police said.

According to the Met's website, calls to the communications command are dealt with by an operator, who grades all incidents "in terms of their urgency".

The website: "First contact operators will question the caller and gain all the relevant information necessary to ensure the best police response.
"Having completed this, the operator will grade the call in accordance with standard operating procedures for the type of incident."

Calls are passed to a despatch operator for deployment if required and police resources are assigned depending on the type of incident, the site says.

Police said they found a "chaotic" scene inside the vault Previously, Scotland Yard said they were alerted to the burglary on Tuesday.
The Met said it was "photographing the scene and recovering exhibits in meticulous detail". It would not comment on the total value of items stolen.

A heavy duty drill was used to bore holes into the 6ft (2m) thick walls reinforced with concrete to access the vault after the thieves had climbed down a lift shaft.
Experts said it was likely the thieves made several holes until they had created a big enough space to get through, which would have taken an experienced operator several hours.
Hatton Garden is famous for jewellery and the vault was used mainly by local jewellers and gold dealers.

Update Re: PhOtOs- HUGE UK Jewel Heist-GANG Jailed> £14m STILL Missing

"Grandpa Gang" Guilty of Biggest Burglary in English History

By Reuters, 14 January 2016

LONDON, 14 Jan 14 (Reuters) -

A three men were found guilty on Thursday over the largest burglary in English legal history, > a daring multi-million pound raid on a safe-deposit business in London's jewellery district led by pensioners who had spent a life in crime.

In a plot three years in the planning, the gang broke into the vault of the Hatton Garden Safety Deposit building during the long Easter holiday weekend last year.

They entered an elevator shaft and climbed down to the vault where they used heavy equipment to drill through a thick concrete wall. Initially thwarted, they returned the following day and ransacked 73 deposit boxes, stealing jewels, gold and cash worth 14 million pounds ($20 million).

The tunnel leading into the vault at the Hatton Garden

Only about a third of that has been recovered, including some which was hidden under headstones in a London graveyard.

The combined age of those involved was about 500, with the youngest 42 while two were in their 70s. Brian Reader, the oldest at 76 and one of the ringleaders, got to the scene of the crime on a bus using his senior citizen pass entitling him to free travel.

Reader was no stranger to such crimes and had been jailed in the past over a notorious 1983 heist at the Brink's-Mat high security vault at Heathrow Airport when 26 million pounds worth of gold bars was stolen.

The audacious nature of the raid also rekindled memories of other renowned crimes such as the Great Train Robbery of 1963, when a 12-member gang ambushed a Royal Mail night train, a heist immortalised in several films making those involved famous.

While a lawyer representing one of the gang suggested the Hatton Garden raid could be made into the movie "Bad Grandpas", detectives said the gang might be old but they were dangerous men, with a string of convictions for armed robbery.

"We can't escape the fact that these people are callous, career criminals," Detective Superintendent Craig Turner said.
"They had a long history of criminal activity behind them."

MYSTERY MAN "BASIL"

On the evening of April 2 last year, the gang met at the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit and were let in through a fire exit by a red-haired man known as "Basil" who has not been identified and is still at large with a 20,000 pound reward on his head.

Although they disabled alarms as they went, one was triggered. A security guard who went to the scene saw nothing untoward and the police failed to send any officers, a mistake for which they have apologised.

The gang began the long process of drilling through the 51 cm (20 inch) thick concrete wall but initially could not get inside because a cabinet containing deposit boxes was in the way.

The next day they returned with new machinery, forced the cabinet out of the way and climbed into the vault where they opened 73 of the 999 boxes.

Detectives were able to trace a white Mercedes car they used to track down the main conspirators - Reader, John Collins, 75, Terry Perkins, 67 and Daniel Jones, 60.

They watched and listened in the next few weeks as the suspects met up in cafes and the Castle pub in Islington, north London where the heist was originally planned to discuss what to do with the loot.

"FORENSICS FOR DUMMIES"

When they arrested the gang, they found a small smelting machine, diamond-testing equipment, and tools to separate gold from diamonds. Among other items recovered was a "Forensics for Dummies" handbook.

Jewellery was also found in a bag hidden under the gravestone of the father and brother of Jones's partner.

The main figures in the heist pleaded guilty to conspiracy to burgle in September. Two more, William Lincoln, 60, and Carl Wood, 58, were convicted at Woolwich Crown Court of the same charge on Thursday while Hugh Doyle, 48, was found guilty of concealing stolen property.

Another man was cleared of any involvement while Perkins' daughter and her brother-in-law also admitted conspiracy to conceal criminal property.

The gang will be sentenced in March.

Bombshell Tape Reveals Identity of Man Who Hid M25 Killer Kenneth Noye in Spain

Kenneth Noye stabbed 21-year-old Stephen Cameron to death on a slip road of the M25 near Swanley, Kent, and then went on the run

BBC 31 JAN 2023

New evidence is said to reveal the identity of someone who hid M25 road rage killer Kenneth Noye while he was on the run in Spain.

Retired accountant Paul Blanchard claims to have what he calls “dynamite” audio recordings including a man admitting his role in the plot.

The scene outside a security warehouse near Heathrow Airport after a raid in 1983

Mr Blanchard wants the man to face justice, and plans to hand the tapes to British police this week. He said the cassettes contain 500 hours of interviews with associates of gangster John “Goldfinger” Palmer.

Palmer, who stood trial for the 1983 Brink’s-Mat robbery, was shot dead in his garden in Essex eight years ago.

Mr Blanchard said the man who admitted his role in hiding Noye in Tenerife was recorded by a writer for an autobiography that was never published.

Palmer’s associate says on the tapes: “I take him away from everybody – only God knows where he is.” Asked by the writer “this is while Noye is on the run?”, the man replies: “Exactly. I was involved because John Palmer told me to be involved. I’m too happy to help.”

The man says of Noye: “He liked me a lot. He respected me and saw me as a man of business.” He also boasts about having a “lot of contacts everywhere in the world”.

John Palmer and his wife Marnie after he was freed from involvement in the Brinks Mat robbery dbase

It comes as a six-part BBC drama on the Brink’s-Mat gold robbery and its aftermath is due to be screened next month.

Hugh Bonneville, Jack Lowden, Dominic Cooper and Charlotte Spencer will star in The Gold, following the chain of violence spawned by the £26million raid, including Noye fatally stabbing undercover officer John Fordham in 1985.

Noye, who pleaded self-defence, and Hatton Garden heist mastermind Brian Reader were both cleared of the *policeman’s murder but convicted of handling 11 of the stolen gold bars.

In 1996, following his release from a 14-year sentence, thug Noye stabbed 21-year-old Stephen Cameron to death on a slip road of the M25 near Swanley in Kent, and went on the run with the help of Palmer.

Convicted fraudster Mr Blanchard said the man on the tapes had corrupt relationships with senior Tenerife police that helped him shield Noye, who was able to return to the UK to see his family while still wanted.

Stephen Cameron was murdered by Stephen Noye in a road rage incident in 1996

A Scotland Yard report concluded in 2002 that Palmer was protected for years by several bent officers.

Ex-Freemason Noye, now 75, also allegedly used corrupt police to help him avoid justice and once offered Brink’s-Mat detective Brian Boyce a £1m bribe.

While on the run, Noye and a girlfriend stayed on Palmer’s yacht. Palmer apparently lent him his plane to flee Britain.

Mr Blanchard’s alleged involvement with the Spanish underworld began in 1999 when he was a tax adviser on Tenerife. He won his battle against extradition to Spain last year.

Mr Blanchard, 77, from York, was accused of helping to launder cash from gangs in Tenerife between 1999 and 2001.

Hugh Benneville and Charlotte Spencer are among the stars of the new BBC show

He claimed the Spanish authorities were using him to build a case against a gang’s alleged leader.

Mr Blanchard was jailed for six years and six months in the UK in 2008 after admitting his part in a *passport fraud, laundering £375,000 and trying to steal £4.3m from a London bank and transfer it to Spain.

About the tapes in his possession, he said: “I’m going to the Met police to make a formal complaint. A crime has been committed by the men who hid Noye.

“I am going to hand the police the tapes. It is in the public interest and I’m doing it for Stephen’s family.”

After killing Stephen, Noye fled to Tenerife and Andalucia, where he had a plush villa. He was extradited in 1999 and found guilty of murder a year later. Noye, freed in 2019, is said to have salted away £5m from the Brink’s-Mat raid
