DOWNTOWN Los Angeles has been lit up by massive flames as hundreds of firefighters tackle a huge fire, which can be seen for miles.

Firefighters tackled huge blaze in downtown Los Angeles More than 250 firefighters battled the blaze in the early hours of this morning, which has closed down two major highways.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman David Ortiz described the blaze, which engulfed West Temple Street, an east-west highway which travels through the centre of the city, as "huge."

The 101 Freeway was closed in both directions

The cause and extent of the fire are not yet knownHe told The Los Angeles Times the fire broke out at a building planned to be a tall residential structure, but didn't think anyone was living or working there.

The 101 Freeway was closed in both directions, while the California Highway Patrol confirmed transition lanes between the 110 and 101 freeways were shutdown.
The cause and extent of the fire are not yet known and there were no reports of injuries.

Local reports said the fire broke out at 1.20am local time and photographs posted on social networking sites show the flames can be seen for miles.
