PhOtOs-Abused Children Rescued in Mexico
458 Children and 138 Adults Forced to Live in Horrific Conditions are
Rescued from Group Home in one of Mexico’s Worst Incidents of Abuse in Years
Nearly 600 children and adults have been rescued from a boarding house in Mexico where they suffered sexual abuse and were forced to go out begging, said the country's top prosecutor. The 458 children and 138 adults had been held against their will at the House of the Big Family in Zamora, Michoacan, said Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam. Police detained the home's owner, Rosa del Carmen Verduzco, and eight workers for questioning. Mexican federal police take away Rosa del Carmen Verduzco, head of the Great Family home in the city of Zamora, in Michoacan state, after a raid found nearly 600 children and adults allegedly kept against their will Verduzco and her staff are suspected of keeping residents in deplorable conditions, feeding them rotten food and making them sleep on the floor among rats, ticks and flears, as well as subjecting them to sexual abuse They are suspected of keeping residents in deplorable conditions, feeding them rotten food and making them sleep on the floor among rats, ticks and flears. Mr Murillo Karam was joined at a news conference yesterday by the country's top federal investigators, as well as Michoacan Governor Salvador Jara. 'I'm in utter dismay because we weren't expecting the conditions we found at the group home,' said Mr Jara. It is one of Mexico's worst cases of alleged child abuse in many years The House of the Big Family - known locally as Mama Rosa's Home, after its owner - has been operating for more than 60 years, and had been well known and respected in Michoacan, said the BBC citing local media. Its Facebook profile says that the home was founded in 1947 and houses more than 600 children abandoned by their parents: 'Criminals, drug addicts, or children of the street, all adopted by Rosa Verduzco.' But witnesses told investigators that children and adults there were forced to beg on the street and door to door, were fed rotten food, forced to sleep on the floor, sexually abused and kept against their will. Mexican authorities rescue 458 children from abusive home..... Mexican Attorney General Jesus Murillo, left, and Michoacan Governor Salvador Jara at a press conference in Mexico City where they detailed the allegations against staff at the Great Family home The House of the Big Family - known locally as Mama Rosa's Home, after its owner - has been operating for more than 60 years, and had been well known and respected in the western state of Michoacan When federal police swooped they found 278 boys, 174 girls and six infants under the age of three, as well as 138 adults up to the age of 40, officials told the BBC. The investigation began after five parents filed complaints last year with authorities because they weren't allowed to see their children at the home, said Mr Jara. One of the them was a woman who grew up and gave birth to two children at Great Family. She was allowed to leave when she was 31, but Verduzco kept the two children, who had been registered under her name, said Tomas Ceron, head of the Criminal Research Agency at the Attorney General's Office. The woman told investigators she was allowed to see her children once every two months, for supervised visits lasting just three hours.
