PhOtOs-Boston Bomber Smiles in Court-Supporter Screams 'Don't Kill Him'
'Bipolar' Boston Bomb Hoaxer Appears in Court and is Sentenced to a Mental Evaluation after Leaving a Rice Cooker filled with Confetti at the Finish Line on the One-Year Anniversary
The man arrested near the Boston Marathon finish line carrying a backpack containing a rice cooker on the anniversary of the bombings has been sent to a state psychiatric facility for an evaluation Wednesday following his initial court appearance. Kevin 'Kayvon' Edson was sent to Bridgewater State Hospital and ordered held on $100,000 bail after an appearance in Boston Municipal Court on charges of threatening battery, possession of a hoax explosive device, threats to commit a crime, disturbing the peace, disturbing a public assembly and disorderly conduct. The 25-year-old's next court date was scheduled for May 7. According to a police report read aloud in court, after Edson was read his rights, he told an officer: 'I knew what I was doing, it was conceived in my head. It's symbolism, come on. The performance got the best of me.' Color coordination: 'Kayvon' Edson's face was painted yellow and blue, the traditional colors of the marathon, when he was arrested Tuesday night after dropping off a backpack with a rice cooker filled with confetti at the finish line on the one-year anniversary of the bombings Edson's arrest occurred hours after ceremonies to mark last year's Boston Marathon bombings, in which two pressure cooker bombs hidden in backpacks exploded, killing three people near the finish line and injuring more than 260 others. Edson, with addresses in Boston and Wakefield, was stopped late Tuesday after passers-by told an officer they saw him yelling, walking barefoot down the middle of a street, veiled in black, in pouring rain. His face was painted yellow and blue, the traditional colors of the marathon, police said. The street was open to pedestrians at the time, and police said his presence was not a security breach. Man behind the stunt: Edson told police that he 'got caught up in the performance' when he went through with the bomb scare Mental problems: Edson's mother said that the former art school student, seen in court on Wednesday, has bipolar disorder The backpack was destroyed in a controlled explosion by police, who later determined that the contents were not explosive. Edson's mother, Joie Edson, said her son has bipolar disorder. Parsons The New School for Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology, both in New York City, confirmed that Edson had taken classes at their schools but never graduated. The Massachusetts College of Art and Design posted a statement on its website saying that an undergraduate student had been arrested by police and the school was cooperating with authorities, but it did not mention Edson by name. The stunt : Witnesses spotted the first bag being dropped off by a barefoot man- later identified as Edson- dressed in all black with a black veil who was 'acting strangely' and yelling 'Boston Strong!' What remained: A member of the bomb squad inspects the bag after a controlled detonation at the finish line of the Boston Marathon in Boston, Tuesday, April 15, 2014 A second suspicious backpack also was found Tuesday. Officers determined it had been left behind by a media outlet and was not dangerous, but it too was destroyed. The backpacks rattled nerves days ahead of this year's marathon. Police kept people away from the finish line area for about three hours Tuesday and trains bypassed the nearby Copley Square station. 'With the marathon coming, our officers are taking it seriously,' police Superintendent Randall Halstead said. 'The safety of the public is utmost

Re: PhOtOs-Boston Bomber Smiles in Court-Supporter Screams 'Don't Kill Him'
Bearded 'Boston Bomber' Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Smiles as he Appears in Court -One of his Supporters is Dragged From the Room Screaming 'Don't Kill an Bnnocent boy'
With wild hair and a new beard, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev appeared in court this morning for the first time in more than a year, smiling at his lawyers as he took his place before a gallery full of Boston Marathon bombing survivors and victims' families. The emotional but brief hearing was punctuated by a woman being dragged out of the gallery screaming 'don't kill an innocent boy' and words of encouragement to the suspect in Russian. The 21-year-old stands accused of detonating twin bombs at the marathon's finish line in April 2013, killing three and injuring more than 260, with his brother Tamerlan who was later killed in a shootout with police. Tsarnaev wore a black sweater, white shirt and green pants to the hearing, and appeared to have healed since the last time he was seen in public. At his July 2013 arraignment, Tsarnaev's face was still battered and he was wearing a cast on his arm from injuries sustained in his dramatic arrest. Scroll down for video The trial begins: Boston bombing suspect Dzokhar Tsarnaev attended a pre-trial hearing Thursday morning, which marked the first time he's been seen in public since July 2013. A sketch of the accused 21-year-old in court on Thursday shows he has a new beard Leaving the building: A motorcade carrying Tsarnaev rolls away from federal court in Boston on Thursday after the brief pre-trial hearing Reporters in the room for the hearing wrote that Tsarnaev looked and acted casual, but was respectful to the judge and attentive to his defense attorneys. A group of 14 Boston Marathon survivors sat together on one side of the gallery to witness the event. Tsarnaev faces 30 charges related to the bombings, and if convicted, he could face the death penalty. Thursday's hearing marked the last time that prosecutors or the defense could request ground rules for the trial, expected to start next month. Capital crimes: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (pictured) faces 30 charges related to the deadly attack, and if convicted could face the death penalty According to reports from the hearing, Tsarnaev's defense asked U.S. District Court Judge George O’Toole Jr about whether they could use expert testimony to show how or if his older brother Tamerlan 'influenced him' and whether the jury would hear about their family upbringing. The brothers were believed to have carried out the attack together, but Tamerlan died in a shoot out with police a few days after the bombings. All the while, Tsarnaev sat slouching in his chair 'looking down' and 'occasionally looking over at the government's lawyers' a Buzzfeed reporter tweeted. Another reporter from WBZ said Tsarnaev fidgeted, playing with his shirt collar, but appeared to be focused when speaking or listening to his defense team. The Buzzfeed reporter said Tsarnaev called the judge 'Sir' any time he was asked a question. At one point, a woman was kicked out of the gallery for yelling 'don't kill an innocent boy' and other words directed at Tsarnaev in Russian. He did not respond, or look out at the gallery for the court appearance. After she was escorted out of the building, the woman identified as Elena Teyer spoke with reporters and claimed to be the mother-in-law of Ibragim Todashev - a friend of Tamerlan Tsarnaev who was shot dead after attacking an FBI agent with a pipe or stick during an interrogation at his Florida apartment in May 2013. Investigators said Todashev was in the middle of writing a statement, implicating himself and Tamerlan in an unrelated September 11, 2011 triple-homicide in Waltham, Massachusetts. The judge hearing the case previously denied a request from Tsarnaev's lawyers, requesting the prosecution turn over evidence from the Waltham investigation - believing it could be used in the trial. Teyer says she told Tsarnaev in Russian: 'We prayed for you. Be strong, my son. We know you are innocent.' Chaos in the court room: This woman, identified as Elena Teyer, was kicked out of court on Thursday for yelling 'don't kill an innocent boy' during a hearing Face off: Conspiracy theorists had an awkward exchange with Boston Marathon bombing survivor Marc Fucarile (right), who lost his leg in the attack. At one point he took off his prosthetic leg and asked if it 'was trickery' Marathon victim confronts protesters outside Boston courthouse Conspiracy theorists: A small contingent of protesters stood outside the federal courthouse in Boston on Thursday to support Tsarnaev, believing he is innocent Supporter: Kimberly Ciaramella holds a sign outside federal court in Boston Thursday while Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was in a final hearing before his trial begins The hearing lasted just 25 minutes, with Tsarnaev immediately being placed back in handcuffs. The judge and attorneys will continue meeting for private sessions over the next two weeks. The judge made no decisions on the ground rules requests, and will rule on them in written motions over the coming weeks. That includes Tsarnaev's latest request to get the trial delayed and moved out of Boston. One of Tsarnaev's lawyers David Bruck said they would be filing a motion to delay the scheduled January 5 trial, but would not say by how long. The judge previously turned down his defense team's petition to move the trial in September, saying at the time that they had not provided enough evidence that media coverage of the bombings prejudiced the local jury pool beyond impartiality. One of the locations the defense team recommended was Washington, D.C. On Thursday, both prosecutors and the defense submitted proposed questions to ask potential jurors, which will be drawn from a pool of at least 1,200. The trial is expected to last several months, with jury selection probably taking a month. Before the hearing got underway on Thursday, protesters gathered outside the court house to greet survivors, law enforcement who worked on the case and victims' family members who were filing into the building. Together: It's believed that Dzhokar (in white baseball cap) and his brother Tamerlan (in black baseball hat with sunglasses) placed backpacks containing pressure-cooker bombs at the finish line of the Boston Marathon Day in court: Watertown, Massachusetts Police Chief Ed Deveau walks pasts protesters as he leaves the court room on Thursday. Watertown was where Dzhokhar was finally surrounded by police and arrested, hiding out in a boat in the backyard of a stranger's home Frenzy: The scene outside the Boston federal court house where Dzhokhar Tsarnaev appeared for a pre-trial hearing Thursday morning Stare down: Several Boston Marathon survivors attended the hearing including victim Marc Fucarile (pictured). A Buzzfeed reporter said that Fucarile couldn't take his eyes off Tsarnaev in the court room Grand exit: Fucarile, right, leaves federal court in Boston, with his wife Jen, center, on Thursday Among the demonstrators was a small contingent, holding up signs in support of Tsarnaev - believing he's innocent. That led to one awkward encounter with Boston Marathon survivor Marc Fucarile, who went up to the group and took off his prosthetic leg, asking if it 'was trickery'. 'I just asked her if she wanted to come in and look at the evidence and then she could make her choices and decisions on how she feels,' Fucarile told reporters at the end of the hearing. Earlier this year, three of Tsarnaev's friends were found guilty of interfering with the police investigation. Friends Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayev were convicted on charges related to throwing away Tsarnaev's backpack containing fireworks from his dorm room, while Robel Phillipos was found guilty of lying to federal agents about being in the room when it happened. All three are waiting to be sentenced for their crimes. Tsarnaev's Thursday hearing comes just one day after his sister Ailina Tsarnaeva appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court for allegedly threatening a woman who previously dated her boyfriend. Quote:
