United States of America Bronx Fire Kills 3 Young Brothers, Including Infant Twin, Injures 10

The massive blaze ripped through a Bronx home Friday night, killing brothers Elijah Artis, 5, Jeremiah Artis, 2, and Michael Turner, 4 months. Neighbors identified the children's mother as Tashika Turner, who they say had lit candles for light after Con Edison shut off the apartment's power.

Three young brothers, the youngest being 4 months old, were killed in a fire at a Bronx home on Friday night.

A massive fire possibly sparked by a fallen candle claimed the lives of three young brothers — one just an infant — as it ripped through their Bronx apartment Friday night, police and witnesses said.

Ten others were hurt, including a critically injured child, as the fast-moving blaze destroyed a second-floor apartment on W. 165th St. near Woodycrest Ave. in Highbridge just after 8 p.m.

Elijah Artis, 5, and his brothers Jeremiah Artis, 2, and Michael Turner, 4 months, were killed, police said. Neighbors said they bore horrified witness to the little boys’ deaths.

“I heard (the children) playing 10 minutes before everyone started screaming,” said tenant Valerie Frazier, 47. “Everybody heard them screaming for help. It’s so sad they had to burn to death.”

Among the injured was a child who was clinging to life early Saturday at Lincoln Medical Center, an FDNY spokesman said. Three victims suffered serious injuries and six had minor injuries.

A woman is treated at the scene of the fire, which erupted inside an apartment on W. 165th St. near Woodycrest Ave. in Highbridge. Ten people were injured in the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but neighbors said candles could be to blame.

Con Edison shut off the power to the apartment a few days ago, and the mother of the three boys who died, who neighbors identified as Tashika Turner, had lit candles for light, they said.

Neighbors said they found Turner lying on the ground outside the apartment building as the fire raged
“My babies are dead!” they heard the inconsolable Turner screaming.

Neighbor William Sands managed to scramble up the fire escape and pluck a young girl and 4-month-old Michelle Turner from the burning apartment, residents said.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, but neighbors say a fallen candle may be to blame. Here, a woman is treated by firefighters outside of the Bronx apartment building.

Firefighters brought down little Michael — Michelle’s twin brother — and the other two boys, but doctors at Lincoln Medical Center were unable to save them.

“Those are my babies ...” said Sands’ girlfriend, Keisha Smith, her cheeks stained with dried tears for the neighbor kids she adored.

“William tried to get more of the children out, but the flames were too much,” she said.

Frazier said she had just seen little Elijah and Jeremiah on Thursday.

“They hugged and kissed me and said, ‘Hey Auntie Val,’” Frazier said. “They were so lovable. Everybody is real close.”

Firefighters brought the blaze under control Friday night and paramedics rushed three children to Lincoln Medical Center, but it was too late. Another child was clinging to life at the hospital early Saturday morning.

“It’s going to be terrible,” she said. “Now we have to get ready for funerals.”

Neighbors said the tragedy comes just days after Turner’s mother, Shanka Turner, underwent heart surgery.

Relatives of the fire-ravaged family sat vigil by the devastated mother's side at the hospital early Saturday morning.

"The whole family is very distraught right now. It's extremely hard," said a woman at the hospital who identified herself as Tashika's sister. "She lost one of her twins and two other babies."

"She's (Tashika) conscious but she's out of it," added a man who identified himself as a relative. "She's sedated, she's in a wheelchair. We haven't asked her yet what happened, but she knows the babies were lost. She lost three babies at once, it's a lot to lose at one time."

Friday’s blaze erupted around the corner from where another devastating fire snuffed out nine lives a few years earlier, neighbors said.

Eight children and an adult were killed as a blaze ate through an apartment building on Woodycrest Ave. near W. 165th St. in March 2007, residents recalled.
