United States of America PhOtOs-TSA Secretly Searching Cars at US Airports

Revealed: The TSA is Secretly Ordering the Cars of Innocent Traveler's to be Searched in US AirportsParking Lots Without Asking First

Daily Mail UK, 18 July 2013

Traveler Laurie Iacuzza recently flew out of Greater Rochester International Airport and upon returning from her trip, she found a yellow slip of paper inside her valet-parked car that announced her vehicle had been searched.

  • Valet attendants at Greater Rochester International Airport have been directed to search vehicles for explosives, according to a report
  • Traveler Laurie Iacuzza said she was not warned that her car would be searched
  • When she returned from a trip she found a notice in her car announcing the vehicle had been inspected
  • A TSA official says only cars that are parked valet are subject to the searches

The Transportation Security Administration is directing valet attendants to search parked cars for explosives at a New York airport.

'Thank you for your patronage,' the slip of paper read. 'Your vehicle has been inspected under TSA regulations.'

Surprise inspection: This note was left inside a woman's valet-parked car at Greater Rochester International Airport

Traveler Laurie Iacuzza said she is furious that her car had been searched without her knowledge

TSA has not responded to MailOnline's inquiries about the searches.

According to TSA policy, agents or people directed and trained by the TSA can carry out vehicle screenings in secure areas if they are random and drivers are notified that their cars could be searched.

There are no reports of valet-parked cars being inspected at other airports across the country, though many other airports have policies that allow for vehicle screenings.

The Miami International Airport notes on its website that 'all vehicles entering the airport premises may be inspected, as well as baggage in the vehicle.'

Similarly, the Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, Michigan states on its website that 'vehicles entering the terminal curbside or parking facilities may be subject to inspection.'

The TSA has additional screening authority through its Visible Intermodal Prevention Response program, or VIPR, which is authorized by the Department of Homeland Security.

The program allows TSA to work with law enforcement officials to 'augment security of any mode of transportation' - which translates to a surge in screenings on highways, in train stations, at airports, or other transportation hubs.

The program caused outrage two years ago when it was used to inspect vehicles on highways in Tennessee and again last year when it was used to screen Amtrak passengers' luggage.

This white sign on the valet attendants' airport kiosk alerts customers to the possibility that their cars will be searched

John McCaffrey, federal security director for the Rochester airport, confirmed that the cars were being searched

News10NBC talked to John McCaffrey, federal security director for the Rochester airport, who confirmed that cars were being searched. He said only valet-parked cars are subject to inspection because those vehicles spend time directly in front of the airport.

'Those vehicles that are in the garage, short-term [and] long-term parking, even if they carry pretty large amounts of explosives, they would not cause damage to the front of the airport,' he said.
'But for those who use the valet, the car could be there for a half hour or an hour so there is a vulnerability.'

A television station spoke to a valet attendant who said that he and his coworkers - not TSA agents - had been ordered to search the cars.
'I have to,' he said, adding that the directive came about a month ago.
A large sign on the valet attendants' airport kiosk alerts drivers to the possibility that their car could be searched.

Iacuzza said the sign was not displayed when she dropped her car off and that she is 'furious' that her vehicle was searched without warning.
'They never mentioned it to me when I booked the valet or when I picked up the car or when I dropped it off,' she said.

'Cover yourself!': Father is horrified after TSA worker 'verbally abuses his daughter, 15, for wearing skimpy clothing at airport'

Daily Mail UK, 18 July 2013

An investigation is underway after a TSA officer told a teenage girl traveling through Los Angeles Airport to 'cover herself up' in an allegedly abusive manner.

The father of the 15-year-old girl, who is not named, blogged about the incident yesterday in which he expressed his horror that his daughter was humiliated and shamed by the officer.
He also posted a picture of what his daughter was wearing at the time - a pair of long black leggings and a tank top with a shirt over it.

Blogger: The girl texted her father, editor-in-chief of Make magazine Mark Frauenfelder, pictured, afterwards to tell him what happened and was said to be shaken up by the incident

She was traveling with a group of high school students on a college tour when the agent allegedly verbally abused her.
She texted her father, editor-in-chief of Make magazine Mark Frauenfelder, afterwards to tell him what happened and was said to be shaken up by the incident.

He wrote on his blog: 'She was at the station where the TSA checks IDs. She said the officer was "glaring" at her and mumbling.

'She said, "Excuse me?" and he said, "You're only 15, COVER YOURSELF!" in a hostile tone. She said she was shaken up by his abusive manner.'

Under fire: The father and his wife met with the TSA who said they were opening an investigation into the incident which they were 'taking seriously' (file photo)

Writing about the TSA agent's behavior he said: 'It doesn't matter what she was wearing, because it's none of his business to tell girls what they should or should not wear.

'His creepy thoughts are his own problem, and he shouldn't use his position of authority as an excuse to humiliate a girl and blame her for his sick attitude.'

TSA spokesman David Castelveter said in a statement to MailOnline that officers are 'trained and expected to perform screening methods in a dignified and respectful manner at all times.'

'We work to make our screening procedures as minimally invasive as possible while providing the highest level of security for the traveling public.

'We regret that this passenger had an unpleasant experience and are in the process of thoroughly reviewing the circumstances.'

This is just the latest in a series of controversies involving the TSA.

Last month, Ashely Jessica from Toronto Canada said she was inappropriately touched during a pat down by a TSA agent. her mother videoed the incident and she later posted it on YouTube.

Claims: Ashley Jessica, a PhD student and researcher from Toronto, Canada, claims the clip shows the female agent touched her unnecessarily at San Diego International Airport

In the footage, which lasts just over three minutes, Jessica repeatedly tells the unidentified TSA female agent not to touch her vagina, breasts, or her mother's private parts.
After Jessica tells the TSA agent that she does not want her breasts touched, the TSA agent threatens to stop the screening process, effectively prohibiting Jessica from flying.

The PhD student and researcher agrees to allow the pat down to continue, but steps back in a obvious fashion when the TSA agent feels high up on the inner part of her leg.

'She just touched my vagina, seriously, that was not my upper thigh,' declares Jessica as she moves away from the agent.

TSA Order Injured US Veteran Marine to Strip

The Airport Security men who couldn't tell a hero from a terrorist: Wounded Iraq veteran marine was ordered to take off dress uniform because it had 'too much metal'
  • Cpl. Nathan Kemnitz was awarded a Purple Heart after he almost died from an injury incurred from a roadside bomb while serving in Iraq
  • At the Sacramento Airport, screeners looked under his medals, ran their hands under his waistband and swabbed his shoes for explosives
  • Visiting the state capitol building to be honored as veteran of the year for his district, he was told to take off his dress blues 'because he was wearing too much metal'
  • TSA said veterans were treated with utmost dignity and those with injuries were screened in a manner sensitive to their disability
By Daily Mail UK, 18 July 2013

A wounded war veteran has described the moment security agents treated him like a 'terrorist' on a recent trip to California because he couldn't raise his injured right arm in a full-body scanner and his dress uniform contained 'too much metal.'
Cpl. Nathan Kemnitz was awarded a Purple Heart after he almost died in 2004 from an injury incurred from a roadside bomb in Fallujah, Iraq. The brave soldier recently traveled to Sacramento, California to receive another award as his district's veteran of the year.

But, what should have been a celebratory experience was tainted when suspicious security workers at both the Sacramento International Airport and the California State Capitol Buildings subjected him to intense screenings and even ordered him to take off his uniform.

Thorough: Cpl. Nathan Kemnitz's friend Patricia Martin took pictures of the tough security screenings the Purple Heart awarded Marine was subjected to

Because of the injury Kemnitz suffered in the blast, he can't lift his right arm above his head, which has made getting through security lines increasingly difficult.
'At some places I'm treated like royalty and at some like a terrorist. There's got to be something in the middle,' he said.

Two recent trips through the secuirty line landed closer to the 'terrorist' side of treatment. When a TSA officer asked him to raise his arms above his head in a full-body scanner, he refused.

'My right arm doesn't work. It's a lot of hassle for me to do that,' Kemnitz said

Younger days: Nathan Kemnitz, shown above, was upset by the way he was treated by TSA and other security staff

Injured: Kemnitz was seriously injured in a roadside bomb while serving in Fallujah, Iraq in 2004

Injury: Nathan Kemnitz, pictured soon after his injury, still struggles to lift his right arm

Screeners then continued to prod Kemnitz, looking under his metals, running their hands under his waistband and swabbing his shoes for explosives.
His traveling partner, Patricia Martin, found the whole incident disturbing, and took pictures of the humiliating screening.
'What does the uniform and heroism represent if our own citizens - in this case employees of the TSA and security personnel - have no regard for them?' Martin wrote to Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki about the incident.
TSA spokesman Ross Feinstein issued a statement Monday concerning the incident.

'Our intent is to treat all injured service members and veterans with the dignity they deserve, As always, all passengers with disabilities and medical conditions are eligible for screening procedures sensitive to their particular disability, medical condition or other unique medical circumstance.

Recognized: Kemnitz at a state capitol award ceremony where he was honored as his district's veteran of the year. Before the luncheon he was told to take off his dress blues at security 'because he was wearing too much metal'

Fighting for us: Nathan Kemnitz, left and right, was asked to take off part of his uniform by one security official

'Transportation Security Officers have to resolve any anomaly detected at the checkpoint,' Feinstein said.

'As is standard procedure for all passengers, if travelers alarm when passing through a metal detector or an advanced imaging technology (AIT) unit, additional screening is required in order to resolve that anomaly.'

Following similar incidents with other wounded veterans, the TSA recently changed it's rules so injured troops no longer need to remove their shoes, jackets or hats in security.
They also offer an expedited service, but you must call the agencies Military Severely Injured Joint Service Operations Center prior to traveling.

Wound: The young man, pictured, broke his arm in three places

Injured: Nathan Kemnitz, left, is shown here receiving his Purple Heart

Welcome: Nathan received a warm welcome from his community when he came home injured

Guests: Senator John McCain visited the young man in hospital after he returned from Iraq

There is also a 'curb-to-gate' service for injured personnel and well as a pre-check program for military personnel at four airports.

Kemnitz wasn't so bothered by the TSA screening as he was by the 'rude' and 'unapologetic' security screener at the California state capitol.
He was visiting the capitol as a veteran being honored in his district, but the Senate Sergent-At-Arms screening him didn't cut him any slack when the metal detector went off.
The screener asked him to take off his dress blue blouse 'because he was wearing too much metal.' That started an argument between Kemnitz, Martin and the security screener.

Representatives at the California state capitol have yet to release a statement about the incident.
