Canada Flag Video-Toronto Mayor Using Crack Cocaine-He Resigned

Family of Toronto Mayor accused of smoking crack accused of having been 'deeply immersed in illegal drug scene'

  • Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has denied ever using crack cocaine after scandal over an alleged video of him smoking the drug

  • Mayor's brother Toronto City Councillor Doug 'sold hashish in the 1980s'
  • Ford's brother Randy 'charged in a drug-related kidnapping'
  • Sister Kathy 'has ties to the KKK and involved drug related violence'
By Daily Mail/Toronto Star, May 2013

A Canadian newspaper has released a bombshell report, alleging the family of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford was 'once deeply immersed in the illegal drug scene.'

The report in the Globe and Mail published the explosive claims, which the family has adamantly denied.

Doug Ford, the mayor's brother who is also a Toronto City Councillor Doug is alleged to have sold hashish in the 1980s, another brother Randy is reported to have been involved in a drug-related kidnapping and Ford's sister Kathy has been alleged to have ties with the KKK.

Denial: Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has denied ever using crack cocaine after scandal over an alleged video of him smoking the drug

Scandal: Rob Ford, far right with his wife, has been the object of scrutiny after reports of a video that allegedly shows him smoking crack cocaine

In the article, it alleges the mayor's brother, Toronto City Councillor Doug, sold large quantities of hashish in the 1980s.

There are no records of him ever having been charged in relation to the alleged drug sale.
The article, that cited 10 anonymous sources, also claimed his brother Randy had been charged in a drug-related kidnapping.

Additionally Ford's sister was named as having connections to the KKK and having been involved in drug related violence.

Ford's brother Doug called the newspaper 'little sleaze bags' and 'a bunch of scums' for going after the family.

'I think it's pretty low, and a bunch of sleazy, sleazy journalism. It has gone to the bottom of the barrel … it makes me sick,' he told a Global News reporter.

Globe's editor-in-chief John Stackhouse defended the piece, telling CBC News that it was 'important to get this on the public record.'

Mayor denies cocaine abuse

Strain: Rob Ford, with his mother, said at a press conference on Friday that the scandal has taken a toll on his family

The Globe said that it has been working on the story for several months and decided to go public after Ford's public denial on Friday that he had ever used drugs.

'I do not use crack cocaine, nor am I an addict of crack cocaine,' Toronto Mayor Rob Ford said in a press conference Friday afternoon, after a week of silence since reports of the video emerged.

'As for a video, I cannot comment on a video that I have not seen, or does not exist.'

Reading from a piece of paper, Ford said the controversy had 'taken a great toll on my family and my friends and the great people of Toronto.'
'For the past week, on the advice of my solicitor, I was advised not to say a word I want to thank the people of this great city for their outpouring of support,' he said.

The mayor took no questions and walked away as a reporter asked him whether he had ever used crack cocaine.

The press conference comes on the same day that members of his executive committee sent him a letter urging him to confront the allegations.

'The allegations need to be addressed openly and transparently,' the letter reads.
'We are encouraging the Mayor to address this matter so that we can continue to focus on serving the people of Toronto.'

Reports on the gossip website Gawker and in the Toronto Star say the video was recorded by men claiming that they had sold the drug to Ford.

The Star reported that two journalists had watched a video that appears to show Ford, sitting in a chair, inhaling from what appears to be a glass crack pipe.

Gawker and the Star said the video was shown to them by a drug dealer who had been trying to sell it for a six-figure sum.

The video has not been released publicly and it's authenticity has not been verified.

This cannot be true, a man that overweight cannot possibly be a crack user..... Lots of videos showing a man that resembles the Mayor, are floating around the net now.

Doug Ford announced Friday he may now run in his brother's place

TORONTO, Sept 12 (Reuters) - Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, who gained global notoriety for admitting he smoked crack cocaine, dropped his re-election bid on Friday, citing a health crisis, but his older brother took his place in the race to run Canada's largest city.

In drama worthy of Shakespeare, the family switch was made minutes before a deadline for changes to the city election ballot, which also saw a Ford nephew withdraw to allow his uncle, the mayor, to run for a city council seat in his place.

The Oct. 27 election is seen as a referendum on Ford's four tumultuous years leading Toronto. Recent polls had shown him in second place in a tight three-way race for mayor of Canada's financial capital and largest city with a population of 6 million.

Doug Ford, the mayor's older brother and campaign manager, is regarded as less charismatic but less volatile than his larger-than-life sibling, who steadfastly refused to resign even as he admitted buying illegal drugs while in office and checked himself into rehab.

"My heart is heavy when I tell you I am unable to continue my campaign for re-election as your mayor," Rob Ford said in a statement, adding that he could be "facing the battle of my lifetime."
"I've asked Doug to finish what we started together so that all we've accomplished isn't washed away. I've asked Doug to run to become the next mayor of Toronto because we need him."

The 45-year-old mayor was hospitalized on Wednesday after complaining of unbearable abdominal pains and was diagnosed with a tumor. He is undergoing a battery of tests, with biopsy results expected in a week.
At a press conference Friday evening, an emotional Doug Ford said that it had been a difficult few days for his "close-knit" family and in particular for his brother, who did not take the decision to step down from the mayoral race lightly.

"This is more than a job for Rob, it's his life's work and his passion to fight for this city, and for each and every one you," Doug Ford told reporters and supporters gathered outside his mother's home in suburban Toronto. "He told me that he needed me to take the torch while he focuses on getting better."
A 49-year-old businessman, Doug Ford was elected as a city councillor in 2010 when his younger brother became mayor.

"He's a Machiavellian figure and he's been called many things but not necessarily a gifted politician or someone with the gift of charisma," Phil Triadafilopoulos, a political science professor at the University of Toronto, said before Doug Ford's nomination for mayor was filed.
"The question is whether, if there is a welling of sympathy, if it goes over and helps a potential Doug Ford candidacy so that he can survive his innate lack of charisma ... by taking advantage of the sympathy that people are feeling for his brother," the professor said.

Doug Ford announced last year that he would not run for re-election as councillor, saying that he wanted to focus on his brother's re-election.
Michael Ford, the nephew who withdrew from a city council race to allow Rob Ford to run in his place, is now running for the city school board.
The Fords' politician father, Doug Ford Sr., died of colon cancer less than three months after being diagnosed in 2006.

In 2009, doctors removed a tumor from Rob Ford's appendix, and the then-city councillor returned to work in good health.
Medical experts said Ford will likely require surgery regardless of whether the tumor is cancerous or benign, and said the biopsy is typically quick and uncomplicated.

In May and June, the mayor underwent rehab for drug and alcohol abuse. He emerged noticeably thinner though still obese. Ford said he regretted not getting treatment "years ago" to treat his alcohol addiction.
Ford, who came to power in 2010 pledging to cut waste at city hall and keep a lid on taxes, has a core base of suburban support known as "Ford Nation."

A poll released on Wednesday showed Rob Ford running in second place with 28 percent of the vote, behind conservative front-runner John Tory, who had 40 percent of voter support. Left-leaning candidate Olivia Chow was in third place with 21 percent of the vote.
