Red Arrow Suspicious Package Shuts Down Metro Station in Montreal

Updated Wednesday, April 17, 2013 12:03PM EDT

Montreal:

Montreal police have blown up a suspicious package at the Lionel Groulx metro station.

Commuters spotted the object outside the station's entrance around 7 a.m. on Wednesday.

Police evacuated the station, and metro cars on the Orange and Green lines were instructed not to stop at the station.

Officers set up a security perimeter around the package, and around 8:30 a.m. the bomb squad's robot arrived and began to examine the package.

Over the next two hours a nearby building was evacuated, and after several hiccups with the police robot, the package was finally destroyed.

About half an hour later Montreal police determined the package did not contain any explosives whatsoever.

The arson squad will now investigate the debris in order to make a thorough assessment of what it contained.

On Tuesday a suitcase left at a gas station near the intersection of Brunswick Blvd. near St. John's Blvd. prompted a large police operation.

The bomb squad gave that suspicious package the all-clear after nearly three hours.
