Breaking News VIDEO -Multiple Cops Shot in Philadelphia US

Philadelphia Shooting > At Least 6 Cops Shot ... Suspect is Barricaded in Home.

6 Philly Officers Shot During 'Active Firefight', 7th Officer Hurt

AP 14 AUG 2019

"It was like a war," a mother, who lives in the neighborhood, told NBC10. "Like the scenes that you see in war. The guns, the fire, the noise. It was like bombs going off simultaneously at a time where people are having dinner."

The gun battle's still active in the North Philly neighborhood of Nicetown-Tioga ... where dozens of cops can be seen taking cover while surrounding a home with at least 1 barricaded suspect. The attack was reportedly triggered after cops tried serving a warrant there.

A standoff continues in North Philadelphia Wednesday evening more than three hours after at least six Philadelphia police officers were shot during what officials called "an active firefight."

The shooting, in the city's Nicetown-Tioga section, prompted a massive response to the largely residential North Philadelphia neighborhood.

As of 8 p.m., two officers remained trapped inside a home where an ongoing shoot-out stretched into a third hour. Officials were attempting to communicate with the gunman and "imploring him to surrender," police said.

Gunfire initially erupted around 4:30 p.m. after narcotics officers served a warrant to a house near the corner of North 15th and West Butler streets, according to officials.

As officers rushed upstairs, a gunman waiting downstairs with an AK-47 fired shots through the ceiling. Police returned fire and a standoff ensued.

A seventh police officer responding to the scene was injured in a car accident at the nearby intersection of North Broad and West Cayuga streets. A pedestrian was also injured, police say.

All of the officers are expected to survive, officials said.

At least one suspect was taken into custody shortly after the firefight started, according to police.

Officers continue to battle with a second gunman, who remains barricaded inside a home as of 7 p.m.

"It was like a war - like a scene that you see in war," a woman who lives in the neighborhood told NBC10. "The guns, the fire, the noise - it was like bombs going off simultaneously at a time where people are having dinner."

Frantic calls from responding officers first came in around 4:30 p.m., according to audio obtained via Broadcastify.

"Officer calls for everything you got. SWAT, long gun," a law enforcement officer can be heard saying on the audio. "I got an officer shot."

The officers were seen crouching behind cars, blocking off surrounding streets and surrounding several nearby homes as the firefight unfolded.

Nearby, stunned families and neighbors gathered behind police tape. Several churches and a day care are in the immediate area.

The day care, Precious Babies Learning Academy, serves children as young as 8 weeks old. It was placed on on lock down while 80 children remained inside, according to owner Yvonne Thomas-Curry.

"It was reported that all the children are safe, however we still are asking the parents to not come near the scene," she said. "It still is dangerous. Children will remain in shelter in place and safe inside with their teachers."

As Thomas-Curry spoke to NBC10, the children were escorted out of the day care by police. They will be reunited with their families at a safe location.

Nicetown-Tioga is roughly 2 miles north of Temple University and about 4 miles north of Center City.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, Police Commissioner Richard Ross, District Attorney Larry Krasner and U.S. Attorney William McSwain all arrived at the hospital shortly after injured officers were taken for medical treatment.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf and President Donald Trump were also monitoring the developing situation.

A lockdown at Temple University's Health Sciences Center campus has been lifted.

The shooting caused major delays for SEPTA's bus and trolley services.

This story is developing. Check back for updates.

Update Re: VIDEO -Multiple Cops Shot in Philadelphia US

UPDATE:

A suspect has been taken into custody after injuring six officers in a shootout in the US city of Philadelphia.

A gun battle broke out between police and a male shooter at around 16:30 local time (20:30 GMT).

The officers were serving a drugs warrant at a home in Philadelphia's Nicetown-Tiago neighbourhood when the gunman opened fire.

A lengthy stand-off ensued as police urged the gunman to surrender.

A video on social media purportedly shows the suspect, named by US media as Maurice Hill, leaving the house with his hands in the air.

The suspect's lawyer Shaka Johnson told CBS3 he helped police negotiate Mr Hill's surrender.

A SWAT team rescued two officers and three others who were trapped inside the home with the gunman, police said.

Police Commissioner Richard Ross said the SWAT team "were able to use stealth" to safely evacuate the officers from a "hostage situation".

Mr Ross said the trapped officers were holding people they arrested during a raid "that went awry almost immediately".

The gunman fired on the SWAT team's truck outside the home, where police wearing bulletproof vests took cover behind cars with guns drawn.

At one point, the shooter was said to be was livestreaming the incident on Facebook, according to local media reports.

During the seven-hour stand-off, officers attempted to "communicate with the shooter" and urged him to give himself up, police Sergeant Eric Gripp tweeted.

Negotiators attempted to call the suspect's phone and were working with a family member and his lawyer.

Six officers who sustained non-life threatening injuries in the shooting have been released from hospital.

Mr Ross said "many of them had to escape through windows and doors" as the suspect fired.

"It's nothing short of a miracle that we don't have multiple officers killed today," the commissioner said.

A seventh officer, who was injured in a car crash while responding to the shooting, remains in the hospital.

A witness told local media she heard more than 100 gunshots and people running for their lives. "They kept us safe the whole time, the whole time, they kept us safe," one woman said of the officers.

Video from the scene shows dozens of police cars and officers outside the home where the gunman was hunkering down.

US President Donald Trump was briefed on the shooting, deputy White House press secretary Hogan Gidley said.

The incident comes after two mass shootings - in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio - brought the debate about gun control in the US into sharp focus.
