Oh Crap! US's Worst Serial Killer Used Rats to Eat Victim Alive

America's Worst Serial Killer who inspired Sopranos Used Rats to Eat Victim Alive

Richard Kuklinski, known as the Iceman, killed more than 200 people in a life marred by violence

Daily Mirror UK, 8 July 2019.

To the outside world Richard Kuklinski looked like the perfect family man.

A father-of-three, Kuklinski seemed to work hard to provide everything his family wanted and needed.

He lived with his wife and three children, one son and daughters Merrick and Christin in a middle-class neighbourhood in New Jersey, New York.

But Kuklinski's veneer of a respectability as a loving family man hid a sinister other life.

Now known in folklore, Kuklinski is better known as the Iceman, a mob contract who butchered more than 200 people in decades of brutal killing.

Richard Kuklinski was known as the Iceman and killed more than 200 people
The cold-hearted killer was one of the inspirations behind hit show, The Sopranos.

He earned his nickname because of his MO for freezing his victims to destroy forensic evidence and then disposing of the body.

Robert Mladinich, an NYPD detective said: "Richard Kuklinski would freeze many of his victims so the time of death could not be determined with any certainty.

"And that’s how he earned the nickname the Iceman.
"In his final interviews, Kuklinski admitted to killing over 200 people.

Richard Kuklinski with his wife and two daughters looked like a respectable family man
"Said he never felt a pang of remorse or guilt. He said he killed as easily as he belched.

"And the only time he displayed any emotion whatsoever, any trickle of humanity, was when he was talking about the harm he did to his children and the pain that he caused his children."

Raised in poverty and regularly beaten by his violent and abusive father, who attacked his brother so viciously, he killed him, Kuklinski turned to petty crime at a young age.

By the time he was 18, Kuklinski was a master burglar and came to the attention of the DeCavalcante family.

The DeCavalcante mafia family were the inspiration behind the Sopranos.

Underneath his respectable veener he was a cold-hearted killer

At first Kuklinski was put in charge of a crew of truck hijckers but before long he has graduated from theft to murder.

Never questionning his orders, Kuklinski proved to be an efficient killer but when Mob boss Carmine Genovese was jailed, he was out of work.

But the killing didn't stop for Kuklinski.

Robert Mladinich said: "As malevolent as it sounds, he was so full of anger, so full of rage, he actually took up killing as a sport."

Michael Vecchione, chief of rackets division, Brooklyn DA, added: "Kuklinski, to hone his skills as a killer, would travel from New Jersey over to Manhattan, and he would look for prey.

"And he would kill people on the street just for practice."

Soon, he was back in demand but when Genovese was murdered in a mob-related hit, Kuklinski had to get a normal job - and this is where he met his future wife.

His daughter, Christin, tried to protect her mother from the beatings
Almost instantly, the relationship was marred with violence, with Kuklinski even stabbing his girlfriend.

He eventually persuaded her to marry him by threatening to kill her if she didn't.
The couple had three children and Kuklinski seemed to only want the best for his family.

Living in a nice area, driving the best cars and making sure his children went to the best private school, K seemed to have broken the cycle.

But behind the closed doors of the family home things were very different.

Christin said: "My father was very big on taking out the motion picture camera. It was very important for him to have these memories, like as proof.

"Like, “See? This is my family. See? Look how, look at the smiles. We’re all really happy. Look how good my kids are dressed.”
"Like, “This is great, look at my car.” It was all very important things for him to show."

In a disturbing cycle, Kuklinski, just like his own father, beat his wife.

He chillingly once even told his young daughter, Merrick, that if he ever went too far with her father and killed her he would also have to kill his own children to protect himself.

Merrick was her father's confidante
Little Christin desperately tried to protect her mother from the vicious beatings - but was always shoved away.

And Merrick, Kuklinski's favourite, carried a very different burden.

From a young age, she became his confidante, with him telling her about the people he had killed in his past.

She was the one he told he would have to kill his whole family if he ever killed their mother - and young Merrick tried everything she could to make her father see that she loved him.

Merrick said: "I think I was 13, and he said uh, “Merri if I – it goes too far and I ever kill your mom, that I would have to kill all of you” and that he wanted me to know that it would, I would be the hardest because of our relationship.

"And I said … I said, “It’s OK dad, I understand".

Despite the outward show of being a regular family man, Kuklinski's killing spree continued.

But one of his most chilling murders was one contract killing that exposed his twisted internal violence.

Kuklinski was employed by the family to kill a mark.

Michael Vecchione reveals some of the most disturbing murders
He would be paid $10,000 for the murder - and another $10,000 if he "made him suffer".

After studying his victim, he kidnapped him, bundled him into the boot of his car and drove him to a cave in Pennsylvania.

Michael Vecchione said: "Kuklinski left the mark there – not to die from dehydration or exposure. He left him there so he could be eaten by rats.

"He set up cameras, lights, motion detectors, video equipment, so he could record the death and the torture that these rats were causing to this individual."

Four days later he returned and all that was left of his victim was disjointed bones - all of the flesh had been eaten.

Michael added: "Richard did double his money. He took the video back to the person who had contracted him, showed it to him.

"The contractor was horrified, but paid him the money nonetheless."

This gruesome murder only served to cement Kuklinski's reputation as a brutal killer and the work kept coming.

Kuklinski had wanted a different life to the one he had for his
children

His line of work meant Kuklinski didn't have many friends but one asscociate, George Malliband, turned to the killer when he needed financial help.

He needed to pay off gambling debts and Kuklinski managed to secure of loan for him from the Gambino crime family.

But when Malliband stopped making his repayments, the Mob looked to Kuklinski and his reputation was on the line.

He took Malliband out for a drive to discuss the situation- and that's when he snapped.

Robert Mladinich said: "Malliband’s ****iness got the better of him.

"When Richard Kuklinski told him that the Gambinos wanted their money, Malliband very foolishly told Kuklinski they were not gonna hurt him because he knew where Barbara and the kids lived.

"It was the worst mistake he ever made. Kuklinski pulled over the car and he was shot five times right there and killed."

The professional hitman had made a huge error - he had killed someone like an amateur.

Kuklinski once threatened to kill his whole family if he went too far and murdered their mother
He made clumsy mistakes while trying to dispose of Malliband's body in a huge chemical dry and it was discovered by police.

When Malliband's family were told, they officers he had been meeting with Kuklinski and police called at the family home.

Everyone inside refused to speak and Kuklinski was soon back to his criminal ways.

By the early 1980s, Kuklinski had a new breaking and entering gang made up of Al Rinke, Gary Smith, Danny Deppner, and Percy House.

Everything they stole, they sold via Phil Solimene.

But when Kuklinski and Solimeme killed rival stolen goods seller Phil Masgay, and swiped his $90,000 it was the beginning of the end.

Solimeme couldn't help but brag about the murder to Kuklinski's crew.

When Rinke was arrested for robbery he turned police informant and while he refused to name Kuklinski, police were now very suspicious.

Officers first arrested Percy House and Kuklinski knew his days were numbered unless he took action.

The family always had nice cars and lived in a good neighbourhood - funded by Kuklinski's killing

He convinced Gary Smith and Danny Deppner to hide in a motel and believing Smith was the one most likely to crack when questioned by police, he and Deppner killed him using cyanide and strangling him when he took too long to die.

Kuklinski poisoned Smith by lacing a burger with the deadly powder.

But even though Deppner was in league with Kuklinski he had made one fatal mistake - he had told his wife that his criminal friend was a killer.

Kuklinski knew he had to be rid of him and also poisoned him with cyanide before shooting him.

He even roped his daughter Merrick's boyfriend in to help him dispose of the body.

Police were now certain he was their man and began following Kuklinski and his family everywhere.

But it was only when an undercover agent gained his trust and Kuklinski asked him how to get hold of cyanide that they finally caught their man.

He was arrested and faced trial for six murders.

Heartbreakingly, daughter Merrick was in the front row with her newborn son, who she wanted her father to meet.

Robert Mladinich described the killer's MO. Kuklinski was sentenced to life in prison and following his conviction confessed to killing more than 200 people.

He died in prison, aged 70, in 2006 - but his family, as well as his victims, still have the scars of his life of violence.

Merrick said: "I just felt that he needed to be loved. And the harder I tried or the more I loved him, the better I could make it.

"Unfortunately, that wasn’t true. So for a long time I felt I failed. I failed him, I guess, because I couldn’t make it stop.

"I couldn’t love him enough for him to see that he could be okay."

Christin added: "Merrick always felt that she didn’t love him enough, and the truth is he didn’t love her enough.
