Two Eurofighter Jets Crash Into Each Other Over Germany Before Plummeting to Ground

Eurofighters crashed in north of Malchow, near the Laage military base in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region of Germany and the Air Force says one of the pilots is reportedly missing

Daily Mirror UK, 24 JUNE 2019.

A pilot died after two fighter jets crashed into each other in a remote part of north Germany, the country's Air Force said.

Emergency services dashed to northern Fleesensee, near Malchow, after the smash, which involved Eurofighter warplanes.

It happened near the Laage military base in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region at around 2pm local time (1pm UK time).

A spokesman for Air Force squadron in nearby Laage said both pilots had pressed the ejection seat.

Initially, they were both missing but one was found in a tree at around 3.15pm local time, around one hour and 15 minutes after the smash.

The second pilot was reported to have died, by German broadcaster n-tv.

Emergency services have rushed to the location near Malchow. The crash has happened in a rural area in Germany

"Together with a third Eurofighter they were flying an Air Combat Mission," the German force tweeted. "The pilot of the third Eurofighter observed the collision and reported that two parachutes descended to the ground."

The Eurofighters, made by Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo, were not loaded with ammunition.

Witnesses reporting hearing a loud bang, according to local media.

One said a wing broke away from the first jet's main hull.

Others said they saw the ejection seat plunge from an aircraft.

Police, meanwhile, have warned people not to handle the debris caused by the smash.

They stressed this can be very dangerous.

The area has been ravaged recently by forest fires.

The Fleesensee is a large lake surrounded by countryside in Germany.
